Hypermetric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart
For the past four decades, the concept of hypermeter has been routinely applied to eighteenth-century music. But was this concept familiar in the eighteenth century? If so, how is it reflected in writings of eighteenth-century music theorists? And how does it relate to their discussion of phrase structure? In this book, a follow-up to the award-winning Metric Manipulations in Haydn and Mozart, author Danuta Mirka unearthes a number of cues that point to eighteenth-century recognition of what today is called hypermeter, and retraces the line of tradition that led from eighteenth-century music theory to the emergence of the modern concept of hypermeter in the twentieth century. Mirka describes the proto-theory of hypermeter developed by German music theorists, recounts the recent history of this concept in American music theory, evaluates contributions made to it by authors working within different theoretical traditions, and introduces a dynamic model of hypermeter which allows the analyst to trace the effect of hypermetric manipulations in real time. This model is applied in analyses of Haydn's and Mozart's chamber music for strings, which shed a new light upon this celebrated repertoire, but the aim of this book goes far beyond an analytical survey of specific compositions. Rather, it is to offer a systematic classification of hypermetrical irregularities in relation to phrase structure and to give a comprehensive account of the ways in which phrase structure and hypermeter were described by eighteenth-century music theorists, conceived by eighteenth-century composers, and perceived by eighteenth-century listeners.

All Harmonies in Twelve-Tone Equal Temperament
The purpose of this book is to provide a context for every harmony, no matter how uncommon it may be in music today or any other day, so that musicians can more easily make use of any harmony. All Harmonies is a comprehensive list of all possible chords and scales (together here called harmonies) that can be formed using the twelve pitch classes of twelve-tone equal temperament (12-TET). In particular, it provides a new systematic organization of the 12-TET harmonies according to features that are both musically relevant and unorthodox. The harmonies are listed in tables, beginning with 2-note harmonies and ending with the 10-note harmonies. Each harmony is presented on the treble staff, along with several of its features to provide the musician with a context for how to use it. Some of these features include: orientation, whether it is ascending or descending; evenness, how spread apart its pitch classes are within the octave; and stretch, how spread apart its pitch classes are around the circle of fifths. To provide further context for scales (harmonies with more than 4 pitch classes), a series of complementary triads is also included for each scale. A main goal of this book is to encourage organized exploration, so each section begins with a summary table containing the harmonic interval patterns found in the section alongside blank space for note taking. Listening to British Nature: Wartime, Radio, and Modern Life, 1914-1945 reveals for the first time how the sounds and rhythms of the natural world were listened to, interpreted and used amid the pressures of early twentieth century life. The book argues that despite and sometimes because of the chaos of wartime and the struggle to recover, nature's voices were drawn close to provide security and engender optimism. This book examines how trench warfare demanded the creation of new listening cultures to understand danger and to imagine survival. It tells of the therapeutic communities who made use of nature's quietude and the rhythms of rural work to restore shell-shocked soldiers, and of ramblers who sought to immerse themselves in the sensualities of the outdoors. It reveals how home-front listening during the Blitz was punctuated by birdsong, broadcast by the BBC. To listen to nature during this period was to cultivate an intimate connection with its energies and to sense an enduring order and beauty that could be taken into the future. Musical Authorship from Sch羹tz to Bach
What did the term 'author' denote for Lutheran musicians in the generations between Heinrich Sch羹tz and Johann Sebastian Bach? As part of the Musical Performance and Reception series, this book examines attitudes to authorship as revealed in the production, performance and reception of music in seventeenth-century German lands. Analysing a wide array of archival, musical, philosophical and theological texts, this study illuminates notions of creativity in the period and the ways in which individuality was projected and detected in printed and manuscript music. Its investigation of musical ownership and regulation shows how composers appealed to princely authority to protect their publications, and how town councils sought to control the compositional efforts of their church musicians. Interpreting authorship as a dialogue between authority and individuality, this book uses an interdisciplinary approach to explore changing attitudes to the self in the era between Sch羹tz and Bach.

Im Zuge dieser Arbeit soll das Thema der Musiktherapie und ihr Einsatz beziehungsweise ihre Wirkung auf Patienten mit einer Demenzerkrankung untersucht werden. Laut der Deutschen Alzheimer Gesellschaft e.V. lebten in Deutschland im Jahr 2016 ca. 1,6 Millionen Menschen mit einer Demenzerkrankung. Dieser Wert stellt ca. 1,3 % der deutschen Bev繹lkerung dar. Vor allem betroffen sind 瓣ltere Menschen. Vaskul瓣re Demenzen nach einem Schlaganfall oder anderen Durchblutungsst繹rungen im Gehirn, sekund瓣re Demenzen bedingt durch Vorerkrankungen oder die wohl bekannteste Form der Demenz, die Alzheimer-Demenz, stellen eine gro?e Beeintr瓣chtigung im Leben der Erkrankten dar und bedeuten f羹r Betroffene und Angeh繹rige meist einen gro?en Einschnitt im Leben. Ihr gegen羹bergestellt werden soll in dieser Arbeit die Behandlung mit Musik in der sogenannten Musiktherapie. Aus vielen unterschiedlichen historischen Quellen in Form von schriftlichen Dokumenten, Malereien, Gesundheitsf羹hrern und ?hnlichem ist 羹berliefert, dass Musik schon seit vielen Tausenden Jahren in allen Kulturen der Welt als Heilmittel verwendet wird.

Also hat er sich bei der 繹rtlichen Musikschule zum Fagott-Unterricht angemeldet. Die dann folgenden 87 Lektionen mit seiner einf羹hlsamen Fagott-Lehrerin hat er dabei jeweils in Aufs瓣tzen beschrieben. Die Beschreibungen dieser Unterrichtsstunden sind sequentiell festgehalten und 羹berspannen eine Zeitdauer von dreieinhalb Jahren. Das Fagott ist ein nicht ganz einfaches, aber umso faszinierenderes Instrument. Wer sich daf羹r interessiert, der findet hier viele spannende Tipps und Tricks. Urspr羹nglich fanden die Lektionen 14-t瓣glich statt. This book explores historical and philosophical connections between music, leisure, and education. Specifically, it considers how music learning, teaching, and participation can be reconceptualized in terms of leisure. Taking as its starting point "the art of living" and the ethical question of how one should live, the book engages a wide range of scholarship to problematize the place of non-professional music-making in historical and contemporary (Western) conceptions of the good life and the common good. Part I provides a general background on music education, school music, the work ethic, leisure studies, recreation, play, and conduct. Part II focuses on two significant currents of thought and activity during the Progressive Era in the United States, the settlement movement and the recreation movement. The examination demonstrates how societal concerns over conduct (the "threat of leisure") and differing views on the purpose of music learning and teaching led to a fracturing between those espousing generalist and specialist positions. The four chapters of Part III take readers through considerations of happiness (eudaimonia) and the good life, issues of work-life balance and the play spirit, leisure satisfaction in relation to consumerism, individualism, and the common good, and finally, parenting logics in relation to extracurriculars, music learning, and serious leisure.
