I have been writing and performing music for forty years. I started listening to music at a young age. I listened to Joe and Eddy, the Righteous Brothers, Peter, Paul, and Mary, and a little later Barbara Streisand as I ironed every Saturday morning. I sang at the top of my lungs, knowing every word. I was the third child of five in a home with alcoholism and mental illness and became "invisible" when I was very young. The music kept me company and made me feel like I was not alone and there was more to life than what I saw around me. It was exciting to feel the melodies and the rhythm inside me. I started listening to Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Quincy Jones, and Eddie Harris. Then I discovered Emmy Lou Harris, Waylon Jennings, and Rita Coolidge. I loved how the music transformed me, and the world around me. I taught myself piano and a friend gave me a guitar and taught me a few chords. I started writing my own songs hearing little whispers of songs from my past. I went back to college and studied music in all its forms. Music became my "home." I have performed in restaurants/bars, theatres, cafes, and coffee shops. I have taught piano, guitar, and voice for seventeen years. My adult students have performed inWe Fest, house concerts throughout the country, and music festivals. I have produced two albums of original music and performed my songs in my one-woman show "Merica's Story." My songs have been performed in plays I've written, sung at weddings and funerals, and used as background music in educational videos. The songs in this book are eclectic: some are folk, some blues with a little jazz thrown in, some country, and some light rock. They tell stories of my life. From "Devil in my Headlights", a country tune about taking a risk and jumping on the stage to perform, to poignant songs like "Bright Eyes" dealing with a loved ones drug addiction, to "Little Bird" a song about finding your own voice and "I Met Him on a Touring ship" a story of love and romance. S矇bastien Erard's (1752-1831) inventions have had an enormous impact on instruments and musical life and are still at the foundation of piano building today. Drawing on an unusually rich set of archives from both the Erard firm and the Erard family, author Robert Adelson shows how the Erardpiano played an important and often leading role in the history of the instrument, beginning in the late eighteenth century and continuing into the final decades of the nineteenth. The Erards were the first piano builders in France to prioritise the more sonorous grand piano, sending gifts of their new model to both Haydn and Beethoven. Erard's famous double-escapement action, which improved the instrument's response while at the same time producing a more powerful tone, revolutionised both piano construction and repertoire. Thanks to these inventions, the Erard firm developed close relationships with the greatest pianist composers of the nineteenth century, including Hummel, Liszt, Moscheles and Mendelssohn. The book also presents new evidence concerning PierreErard's homosexuality, which helps us to understand his reluctance to found a family to carry on the Erard tradition, a reluctance that would spell the end of the golden era of the firm and lead to its eventual demise. The book closes with the story of Pierre's widow Camille, who directed the firmfrom 1855 until 1889. Her influential position in the male-dominated world of instrument building was unique for a woman of her time.

The Physics of the Violin
This major work covers almost all that has been learned about the acoustics of stringed instruments from Helmholtz's 19th-century theoretical elaborations to recent electroacoustic and holographic measurements. Many of the results presented here were uncovered by the author himself (and by his associates and students) over a 20-year period of research on the physics of instruments in the violin family. Lothar Cremer is one of the world's most respected authorities on architectural acoustics and, not incidentally, an avid avocational violinist and violist.The book--which was published in German in 1981--first of all meets the rigorous technical standards of specialists in musical acoustics. But it also serves the needs and interests of two broader groups: makers and players of stringed instruments are expressly addressed, since the implications of the mathematical formulations are fully outlined and explained; and acousticians in general will find that the work represents a textbook illustration of the application of fundamental principles and up-to-date techniques to a specific problem. The first--and longest--of the book's three parts investigates the oscillatory responses of bowed (and plucked) strings. The natural nonlinearities that derive from considerations of string torsion and bending stiffness are deftly handled and concisely modeled. The second part deals with the body of the instrument. Special attention is given to the bridge, which transmits the oscillations of the strings to the wooden body and its air cavity. In this case, linear modeling proves serviceable for the most part--a simplification that would not be possible with lute--like instruments such as the guitar. The radiation of sound from the body into the listener's space, which is treated as an extension of the instrument itself, is the subject of the book's final part.
