While doing this, we introduce the pupil to some educational fundamentals. This book is full of everyday pictures and colors. Piano
"Satisfying to the point of sensuousness." -The New York Times Book Review Like no other instrument, a grand piano melds the magic of engineering with the magic of great music. Alone among the big piano companies, Steinway & Sons still crafts each of its pianos largely by hand, imbuing each one with the promise and burden of its brand. In this captivating narrative, James Barron of The New York Times tells the story of one Steinway piano, from raw lumber to finished instrument. Barron follows that brand-new piano-known by its number, K0862-on its journey through the factory, where time-honored traditions vie with modern-day efficiency. He also explores the art and science of developing a piano's timbre and character before its debut, when the essential question will be answered: Does K0862 live up to the Steinway legend? From start to finish, Piano will charm and enlighten music and book lovers alike.
Clapton's Guitar
New York Times bestselling author Allen St. John started off looking for the world's greatest guitar, but what he found instead was the world's greatest guitar builder.Living and working in Rugby, Virginia (population 7), retired rural mail carrier Wayne Henderson is a true American original, making America's finest instruments using little more than a pile of good wood and a sharp whittling knife. There's a 10-year waiting list for Henderson's heirloom acoustic guitars--and even a musical legend like Eric Clapton must wait his turn. Partly out of self-interest, St. John prods Henderson into finally building Clapton's guitar, and soon we get to pull up a dusty stool and watch this Stradivari in glue-stained blue jeans work his magic. The story that ensues will captivate you with its portrait of a world where craftsmanship counts more than commerce, and time is measured by old jokes, old-time music, and homemade lemon pies shared by good friends.

Guitar One Presents Open Ears
Most people know the part about them doing what they love to do best in front of a throng of adoring fans. The less obvious part of a musician's job description can include dealing with a broken-down band bus, lights falling from the stage, people who don't pay, and other occupational hazards. In this collection of 50 Guitar magazine columns from the mid-'90s on, guitarist Steve Morse (Steve Morse Band, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple) sets the story straight about what being a working musician really means. He deals out philosophy and practical advice on: playing with the band, songwriting and developing a style, recording and equipment, and much more, through anecdotes of his many fascinating hard-knock lessons learned. "Self-teaching, adjusting to fit the situation, and good people skills are the keys to making it happen. Learning these skills, in addition to mastering technique, seems to be the way to go." - Steve Morse
Complete Fairy Tales for Solo Piano
"For several generations of performers and audiences, Medtner has lain overlooked somewhere between the genius of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin and the juggernaut of Prokofiev's 'modernist' masterpieces. But he is not just a quintessential Russian composer; he is a master for all, and now perhaps his time has come." -- Eugene IstominFaced with decades of shifting styles, compositional vogues, and musical trends that characterized the early 20th century, composer-pianist Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) remained faithful to the standard of clarity of purpose he learned from a lifetime of active performance of the classical masters. Above all, he considered himself Beethoven's student in spirit, and with the principal meanings and "unwritten laws that are the foundation of musical language." In later years, Alexander Glazunov called Medtner "an artist guarding the eternal laws of art."Among Medtner's most popular pieces are the so-called "Fairy Tales" for piano: works he called skazki -- the Russian term better translated as "tales" or "folktales." "No one tells such tales as Kolya!" exclaimed the delighted Rachmaninoff after Medtner had played his opus 51 pieces to a private gathering. With their rich keyboard textures, intense polyrhythms, and marvelous harmonies, these wonderfully colorful short works -- composed over three decades -- highlight the composer's innate gift for musical storytelling. Pianists and all music lovers will applaud this rare, handsome compilation of works by a modern master of the keyboard.

Amy Beach
Although composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) was precociously talented as a pianist (she made her professional debut at 16), she was largely self-taught as a composer. Through a careful study of the masters, she guided herself into a remarkably prolific and successful career. Her Gaelic Symphony, performed in 1896 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was the first symphonic work by an American woman. Later identified in print as Mrs. H. H. A. Beach, she produced many other orchestral works as well, along with songs, piano pieces, choral works, and even a one-act opera, most in an unpretentious Romantic vein -- a catalog of more than 300 published compositions. Some of Beach's most important work was written for solo piano. This volume of her piano music includes a rich selection of the elegant, stylish miniatures for which Beach is best known. Among them are Ballad, Op. 6; InAutumn, Dreaming, and Fire-Flies, all Op. 15; Barcarolle, from Op. 28; the well-known Scottish Legend, Op. 54, No. 1; the evocative A Hermit Thrush at Morn, from Op. 92; and more. Pianists and other music lovers are certain to prize this convenient, modestly priced compilation of works by an important, unjustly neglected American composer.

The Great Pianists
From Mozart's fabulous legato that "flowed like oil" to Beethoven's oceanlike surge, from Clara Schumann's touch "sharp as a pencil sketch" to Rubinstein's volcanic and sensual playing, The Great Pianists brings to life the brilliant, stylish, and sometimes eccentric personalities, methods, and technical peculiarities of history's greatest pianists. Pulitzer Prize-winning critic and author Harold C. Schonberg presents vivid accounts of the artists' performances, styles, and even their personal lives and quirky characteristics-- such as Mozart's intense competition with Clementi, Lizst's magnetic effect on women (when he played, ladies flung their jewels on stage), and Gottschalk's persistent nailbiting, which left the keys covered with blood. Including profiles of Horowitz and Van Cliburn, among others, and chapters detailing the playing and careers of such modern pianists as de Larrocha, Ashkenazy, Gilels, Gould, Brendel, Bolet, Gutierrez, and Watts, The Great Pianists is a comprehensive and fascinating look at legendary performers past and present.

Chasin’ the Trane
Always elusive, constantly moving, incessantly changing, John Coltrane stood astride the jazz world of the late '50s and '60s. He was a giant of the saxophone and a major composer. His music influenced both rock stars and classical musicians. There was a mystical quality, a profound melancholy emanating from this quiet, self-contained man that moved listeners--some of whom knew little about music but heard something beyond music's boundaries in the sounds his saxophone created. J. C. Thomas traces John Coltrane's life and career from his North Carolina childhood through his apprenticeship with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis, to its culmination in the saxophonist's classic quartet that played to steadily increasing audiences throughout America, Europe, and Japan. The author has drawn on the recollections of the people who knew Coltrane best--boyhood friends, band members like Elvin Jones, spiritual mentors like Ravi Shankar, and the women who loved him. Chasin' the Trane is the story of a man who struggled against drug addiction, studied African and Eastern music and philosophy, admired both Einstein's expanding universe and the shimmering sounds a harp makes, and left behind the enduring legacy of a master musician who was also a beautiful man.
