Giraffes, Black Dragons, and Other Pianos
This lavishly illustrated book treats the history of the piano from its invention in 1700 to the present in terms of its technology. Looking at the technologies of design, materials, and manufacture, and focusing its description on specific existing pianos, it describes the changes in pianos from the earliest days to contemporary instruments. This revised edition incorporates the results of recent research that increases knowledge of the work of Bartolomeo Cristofori, the inventor of the piano; changes perceptions of how eighteenth-century pianos were made and used; adds to the available information about the important contributions of the Steinway Company; and describes the most recent changes to the piano. The first edition of this book received the Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society as the best musicological book in English published in 1982-83. Reviews of the First Edition "If you have ever looked under the lid of a piano and wondered about the technical how and why of it all, this is the book to sate your curiosity. . . . Good's vigorous prose breathes life into the technology . . . and brings forward the people involved, with humor and sensitivity." -Los Angeles Times "This is a fine book. Accurate technical description, an abundance of photographs and drawings, and a very readable text complement a provocative thesis." -Technology and Culture "Intriguing reading. It turns out that the story of the piano and its evolution . . . is rife with human interest, at least when Good relates the details." -Keyboard
America -- A Prophecy
The full score for this large work for Orchestra, Mezzo-Soprano soloist, and chorus was written in 1999 as part of the New York Philharmonic's Millennium commission. Characteristic of Ades, the Orchestral writing is dense and challenging, set against an unusual and startling vibrato-less solo voice. As the title suggests, the work gained further significance since the turn of the Millennium. However, from a musical perspective the score represents a significant example of 21st Century Orchestral composition.

Scriabin Masterpieces for Solo Piano
In 1905, at age 33, Alexander Scriabin was already a star in the firmament of Russian music. Behind him were three symphonies and well over a hundred piano works. A gifted pianist (at the Moscow Conservatory, only fellow student Serge Rachmaninoff scored higher at graduation), Scriabin played recitals of his own music to full houses. As a composer, performances of his works attracted audiences from Russia, Europe, and America. This superb compilation of 29 works includes many that are considered masterpieces of 20th-century pianism. Primarily short pieces, they reflect the highly atmospheric and exotic style of the composer's maturity -- a period when Scriabin was most deeply affected by his mystical vision of a "new" music. Included are Po癡me satanique, Danse languide, Enigme, D矇sir, Caresse dans矇e, Guirlander, and Flammes sombres, among others. The collection also features the complete Fifth Sonata along with four of Scriabin's most popular and frequently recorded works: the poetic Etude in C-sharp minor, the brilliant Etude in D-sharp minor (a Horowitz favorite), the Nocturne in D-flat for Left Hand Alone, and the world-famous Vers la flamme. Now brought together in a single, authoritative, inexpensive edition, this fine collection of masterly compositions will be a significant addition to the score libraries of all pianists and devotees of Scriabin's music.

Andrew York’s Jazz Guitar for Classical Cats Chord/Melody
Guitar One Presents Open Ears
Most people know the part about them doing what they love to do best in front of a throng of adoring fans. The less obvious part of a musician's job description can include dealing with a broken-down band bus, lights falling from the stage, people who don't pay, and other occupational hazards. In this collection of 50 Guitar magazine columns from the mid-'90s on, guitarist Steve Morse (Steve Morse Band, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple) sets the story straight about what being a working musician really means. He deals out philosophy and practical advice on: playing with the band, songwriting and developing a style, recording and equipment, and much more, through anecdotes of his many fascinating hard-knock lessons learned. "Self-teaching, adjusting to fit the situation, and good people skills are the keys to making it happen. Learning these skills, in addition to mastering technique, seems to be the way to go." - Steve Morse
Complete Fairy Tales for Solo Piano
"For several generations of performers and audiences, Medtner has lain overlooked somewhere between the genius of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin and the juggernaut of Prokofiev's 'modernist' masterpieces. But he is not just a quintessential Russian composer; he is a master for all, and now perhaps his time has come." -- Eugene IstominFaced with decades of shifting styles, compositional vogues, and musical trends that characterized the early 20th century, composer-pianist Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) remained faithful to the standard of clarity of purpose he learned from a lifetime of active performance of the classical masters. Above all, he considered himself Beethoven's student in spirit, and with the principal meanings and "unwritten laws that are the foundation of musical language." In later years, Alexander Glazunov called Medtner "an artist guarding the eternal laws of art."Among Medtner's most popular pieces are the so-called "Fairy Tales" for piano: works he called skazki -- the Russian term better translated as "tales" or "folktales." "No one tells such tales as Kolya!" exclaimed the delighted Rachmaninoff after Medtner had played his opus 51 pieces to a private gathering. With their rich keyboard textures, intense polyrhythms, and marvelous harmonies, these wonderfully colorful short works -- composed over three decades -- highlight the composer's innate gift for musical storytelling. Pianists and all music lovers will applaud this rare, handsome compilation of works by a modern master of the keyboard.

Amy Beach
Although composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) was precociously talented as a pianist (she made her professional debut at 16), she was largely self-taught as a composer. Through a careful study of the masters, she guided herself into a remarkably prolific and successful career. Her Gaelic Symphony, performed in 1896 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, was the first symphonic work by an American woman. Later identified in print as Mrs. H. H. A. Beach, she produced many other orchestral works as well, along with songs, piano pieces, choral works, and even a one-act opera, most in an unpretentious Romantic vein -- a catalog of more than 300 published compositions. Some of Beach's most important work was written for solo piano. This volume of her piano music includes a rich selection of the elegant, stylish miniatures for which Beach is best known. Among them are Ballad, Op. 6; InAutumn, Dreaming, and Fire-Flies, all Op. 15; Barcarolle, from Op. 28; the well-known Scottish Legend, Op. 54, No. 1; the evocative A Hermit Thrush at Morn, from Op. 92; and more. Pianists and other music lovers are certain to prize this convenient, modestly priced compilation of works by an important, unjustly neglected American composer.
