Drama in the Time of Covid
Humans birthed theater when the earliest cave dwellers picked up spears and reenacted the day's hunt around the evening fire. Thus, the playwright was born. Since then, from Aeschylus to Ibsen to Albee, across the centuries from Greek theatrons to the La Jolla Playhouse, the theater has displayed human existence in all its blood, sweat, and tears, and audiences have loved it.Then in 2019, COVID killed the Theater...presumably. The coronavirus pandemic closed performance venues from New York's Broadway to London's West End to Avenida Corrientes in Buenos Aires and every world capital in between. Actors and directors collected unemployment and lived hand to mouth, locked out of even their old wait staff jobs as restaurants shuttered. Playwrights holed up in their apartments to wait for the pandemic out, or even worse, returned to living in their parents' basements.But even COVID could not kill Theater. Playwrights, actors, and directors all found ways to keep theater alive. They took to Zoom and YouTube and outdoor venues or friends' living rooms to stage their work. This collection celebrates their survival in all its colorful dramatic diversity. The Ghost of White Hart Lane
A complete account of my search for my father would take a lifetime to tell because that's how long I've been looking. Spurs and Scotland star John White was one of the best footballers of the 1960s. However, in July 1964 he was struck by lightning and killed at 27 years-old. From humble beginnings growing up just outside Edinburgh, through to football fame and his tragic death, the play shares John's cheeky humour. It also follows the story of his son Rob White, who was just five months old when his dad died. The play shines a light on the mental health challenges both father and son face and the way we deal with grief and loss. Martin Murphy's The Ghost of White Hart Lane was originally produced by Bruised Sky Productions and supported by Tottenham Hotspur FC. It was commissioned by John White's son Rob and follows on from his and Julie Welch's Sunday Times bestselling biography The Ghost of White Hart Lane - 'In Search of My Father the Football Legend'. This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July 2024 before the subsequent run at Edinburgh Fringe Festival at Underbelly in August 2024.
Kafka's Ape
In your human world you see only so much less but you claim so much knowledge. Experience is not what happens to someone but what one does with what happens to them. This internationally renowned adaptation of Czech author Franz Kafka's short story, 'A Report to an Academy', is set in South Africa. Adapted by Phala Ookeditse Phala and originally performed by Tony Bonani Miyambo, this adaptation highlights the complexities of identity in the twenty-first century and invite us to explore, through an animal's gaze, the relationship between self and other. It is a play that, through the seemingly simple binaries of human and animal, begins to pick apart the complicated relationship between the self and the other, and the self as other. Since its inception over a decade ago, Kafka's Ape has travelled to countries across the globe and has been performed alongside a plethora of critical moments in recent history. The realities of xenophobia, racism, animal cruelty, genocide and more are explored within the play through its years of touring. This edition was published to coincide with the NOMA YINI production at Summerhall during Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2024.

Eleanor and Mary Alice
Eleanor Roosevelt's epic flight across Japanese patrolled sea to Australia in 1943 during WWII stands out as heroic. Evading Winston Churchill's visit to the USA for his meetings with her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor confesses to Mary Alice Evatt that she is dreading the official receptions in Australia. Artist Mary Alice, who is married to Doc Herbert Evatt, Minister of External Affairs, tries to dissuade Eleanor from flying to the battlefront as she solicits Eleanor's assistance to guarantee Roosevelt's war support to Australia. In Paris in 1948, Mary Alice visits Picasso and Australian artist Moya Dyring, Eleanor chairs the committee developing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the United Nations, and Doc Evatt works hard as the first elected President of the General Assembly. Eleanor and Doc Evatt need to meet together but he is avoiding her. At the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Eleanor and Mary Alice implicitly reveals what these women contributed to political events as it highlights Mary Alice's importance to Australian modern art and the arts as a human right (Article 27). The Evatts and the Roosevelts had shared values including an understanding that the arts can advance freedom, equality and social justice.

STONES (A deconstruction of Zion) was written by David Schein in 1989 and performed by him in 1990 at the Home for Contemporary Theater and Art in NYC. That was during the First Palestinian Intifada, known as the "Stone Intifada," which began with Palestinian youth throwing stones, their only weapon, at the Israeli forces that had at that time occupied the West Bank and Gaza for twenty years. At the time of STONE'S publication, 2024, the occupation has lasted 57 years. Gaza is destroyed. Much of the West Bank has been appropriated. Schein says, "This STONE is aimed at the ideologues and their armies on both sides who continue to inflict horrors upon civilians."

Love in the Time of Coronavirus is a provocative interracial Romeo and Juliet set during the period between the onset of the pandemic and the death of George Floyd. Although presented as a comedy, the play's central thematic focus is the issue of racial inequality. It is a full length two-act play with five onstage characters, two adults and three teenagers. Two high school juniors in a small city near Minneapolis must overcome racial barriers, parental objections, and the COVID lockdown in order to pursue their relationship.
