Oak
The oak tree is one of nature's most majestic creations, sacred to Zeus and Thor, capable of growing to a tremendous size and living for hundreds of years. It is also an ecosystem unto itself, sheltering and nourishing countless species of birds, mammals, insects, plants, and fungi. In this breathtaking volume, acclaimed tree portraitist Beth Moon, photographer of the best-selling Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time, pays tribute to the oak. She presents three rich and interconnected series of images: First, the ancient oaks of the United Kingdom and Europe, gnarled and knobby giants that have survived through the centuries in parks, preserves, and private estates. Second, the sprawling live oaks of the American South, often planted in monumental all矇es, or canopied avenues. And third, acorns caught in the moment of sprouting, each unfolding in its own pattern, revealing the promise of new life. An essay on the natural history of oaks by Todd Forrest of the New York Botanical Garden, as well as a poetic text by Moon tracing the life cycle of the oak, complement the gorgeous hand-tinted photographs. Oak: From Seed to Ancient Tree will be treasured by all nature lovers.

The Radiant Sea presents an exciting new perspective on the mysterious environment that accounts for 99 percent of the habitable space on Earth but remains hidden to the casual observer. Two of the world's leading researchers explore the nature of underwater light, investigating the varieties of transparency, pigmentation, iridescence, bioluminescence, and fluorescence. Based on the latest available research, they examine the need for--and likely function of--color and light shows among marine species. Each luminous wonder is described with informative captions and colorfully represented by the finest nature photography.
Nanocosmos
A breathtaking tour of the natural world is offered in Nanocosmos, a glorious examination of majestic topographies revealed by powerful scanning electron microscope (SEM) technologies. Nothing like Nanocosmos has ever been seen before. Benson has produced an exhilarating, aesthetically magnificent examination of complex microscopic worlds. The humbling beauty and cosmic immensity of our surrounding universe of planets, stars, and galaxies has inspired humanity since prehistoric times. But what about the vistas at the other end of the size-scale? The tiny worlds here, invisible to our unassisted eyes, are if anything more intricate, complex, and extraordinary than anything so far seen in deep space. Lauded artist and author Michael Benson's sensational Nanocosmos corrects this oversight with an unprecedented examination of natural design at sub-millimeter scales. Constructed from SEM scans that he made over the course of six years at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Quebec, the images presented here reveal an eerie, awe-inspiring beauty in subjects taken from the natural world. These include radiolarians, dinoflagellates, and diatoms, as well as many varieties of insects, microscopic flowers, and even lunar samples from the Apollo program. The composite mosaic micrographs in Nanocosmos fuse art and science in revelatory ways, exposing an astonishing sublimity hidden to the naked eye.

Giovanna Silva: Days Without Number
Silva's unexpected, random shots capture new angles of New York architecture as she wanders the cityFor the past three years, photographer Giovanna Silva (born 1980) has meandered through New York City, camera in hand, collecting photographs in her own time. She often walked more than 10 miles a day, taking in as much as she could or sometimes passing by the same site again and again. As a collection of more than 700 images, Days Without Number is ostensibly organized as a calendar, but follows no sense of time or chronology. Ultimately, it is a puzzle of images: populated by the city's recognizable landmarks but not a travelogue; imbued with the city's pedestrian spirit but not a portrait of its denizens. Alongside this surprising series is an essay by New York-based writer Sasha Frere-Jones, a member of the New Yorker staff for 10 years and now a cultural contributor for several newspapers and magazines. This book was published in conjunction with Head Hi

Edward S. Curtis. the North American Indian. Complete Portfolios
Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) dedicated his entire life to a project all his own, to use a camera to preserve the cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of North America. For three decades, he traveled in every region of the continent, through every kind of terrain and weather, via land or water, in the 50簞C heat of the Mojave Desert or the -20簞C chill of the Arctic; moving on foot, by horse, wagon, donkey, boat or train, or later by automobile. More than 40,000 photos were produced during those years. During his lifetime, the finest of these photographs entitled The North American Indian, were presented in twenty elaborate, large-scale portfolios with which Curtis raised a monument to commemorate the disappearing culture of North America's indigenous peoples and to bring it fully back to life. In addition, the book holds a selection of photographs from the text volumes. Without Edward S. Curtis we would hardly know a thing about the rites of the Hopi in America's southwest, nor be able to picture the Qagyuhl winter dancers, or have any idea of the ceremonies on Nunivak Island. The basic humanistic message that shines from his pictures is highly relevant, namely peaceful coexistence in which you can overcome hatred and prejudice if you are always willing, on meeting a stranger, to seek some idea in common.

Kent
What began as a small farming community has grown into one of the fastest developing cities in the Pacific Northwest. Kent, Washington is a part of the White River Valley, about 7.5 miles south of Seattle and 18 miles northeast of Tacoma. Situated between the two ports, Kent is in an advantageous position for trade and development. It was named after the county in England for its shared history of growing hops. Due to frequent flooding, the rich soil was good for growing a variety of crops. The hills on either side of the valley were abundant in red cedar; the logging and farming opportunities made the land a popular spot for white pioneers to set out to make their fortunes. Within the last 50 years, both Boeing and Amazon have built facilities in the city.Rachel E. Friedland has lived in Kent for over 20 years. She has a bachelors degree in history from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, and a certificate in museum studies from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. She has been an educator for five years and a volunteer at the Greater Kent Historical Society. Compiled from images from the Greater Kent Historical Society, the Museum of History and Industry, and the White River Valley Historical Museum, this book is a visual journey through the rich history of Kent.
Secret Stroud
Stroud has been an important market town in the Cotswolds for centuries. At the heart of the five valleys, its prosperity was founded on the wool trade in the Middle Ages. During the Industrial Revolution, the town became a textile centre with numerous mills built along its streams. The canal network facilitated trade and industry in the town, as did the arrival of Brunel's Great Western Railway. The town is renowned today for its historic buildings and steep streets and has become an independent cultural centre with a strong environmental community, which even boasted its own currency for a while in recent years. Through the centuries Stroud's unusual history has encompassed the country's oldest anti-slavery memorial, Huguenot and Jewish communities, a Victorian Communist colony, the last pistol duel in England, food riots, suffragettes, suffragists and much more. With tales of remarkable characters, unusual events and tucked-away or disappeared historical buildings and locations, Secret Stroud will appeal to all those with an interest in the history of this Gloucestershire town.
Mastering Composition
Mastering Composition is a comprehensive guide to the secrets behind great photographic composition.Fully updated to include the latest technologies and software, Mastering Composition is the definitive guide for taking great photos, considering visual weight, balance, negative space, and depth. Author and professional photographer Richard Garvey-Williams argues that success lies in a combination of four elements: an impactful subject; dynamic composition; effective use of lighting; and, perhaps the most crucial, an ability to invoke an emotional response in the viewer. Citing examples gleaned from a study of history (the Ancient Greeks' Golden Rule, Fibonacci's mathematical ratio, and the principles known as Gestalt theory) the author analyses the concepts, rules and guidelines that define successful composition in photography and offers practical guidance to achieving great results. In clear, concise and jargon-free text he also considers the role of tone and color in good composition and offers invaluable tips and the tools to help the photographer take control of the creative process. The book is illustrated with examples of the author's own beautiful nature photography, along with diagrams and notation to explain techniques most clearly. A final chapter in this definitive guide for all serious photographers discusses photography and its relationship to art before offering a considered conclusion to the exploration of this fascinating topic.
Indiana Transformations
In the Anthropocene era, every inch of the Earth has been permanently impacted by human forces. As human civilization fundamentally distorts deep ecology, the vastness of the changes becomes difficult for us to visualize and comprehend. What if we could compress it into a defined space to better visualize it and perceive it globally and locally?Indiana Transformations presents the Hoosier state as a microcosm of the Anthropocene and our interactions with it. It captures key features of this worldwide phenomenon within a regional, bounded space, collapsing the global into the local. Drone photography from more than 45 locations across Indiana provides readers with a new visualization of the environment in which we live. By documenting the current epoch within a narrow scope, author Zach Schrank and photographer Aaron Yoder convey how the Anthropocene is not an exotic feature of a landscape on the other side of the world but is present in a space as unassuming as Indiana.Showcasing stunning imagery of humans' profound environmental impact, Indiana Transformations helps readers appreciate the scale of change around us.

Blinked Myself Awake
In Blinked Myself Awake, Bieke Depoorter explores memory's power and fragility, combining images of stargazers, diary texts, and historical fragments, highlighting often-forgotten female astronomers. In recent years, photographer Bieke Depoorter developed an overriding interest in astronomy. She sought out amateur stargazers, visited state-of-the-art observatories and researched the history of the field. Gradually, it became clear that her interest in astronomy was linked to lost memories from her past. After all, the night sky is a kind of shared memory; the light of celestial bodies takes hundreds, thousands or millions of (light) years to reach our eyes on earth. In Blinked Myself Awake, photographer Bieke Depoorter explores the power and fragility of memory, the human desire for objectivity and the elusive nature of 'truth'. She does this by interweaving photographs of amateur and professional stargazers, diary-inspired texts and fragments of astronomical history, in which often-forgotten female astronomers play a role.

Hollywood
Hollywood: Confidential is the latest collection of beautifully timed photos from bestselling society photographer Dafydd Jones. Formerly of Tatler and Vanity Fair, Jones is a serial capturer of intimate moments during high-society functions. As famous Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter puts it, when it comes to party photographers, 'Dafydd Jones is the sniper's sniper - the best of the best.' On numerous occasions in the 1990s and 2000s, Jones turned his lens to the faces of Hollywood with all his usual impudence, as they mingled and danced at private events in the Hollywood Hills, Oscar-night parties and awards ceremonies. The result is a rare thing - photographs that convey the underlying personalities of the world's most public personas. Following on from England: The Last Hurrah and New York: High Life / Low Life, this is an essential portrait of celebrity culture from behind the scenes, featuring the likes of Anna Nicole Smith, Tom Cruise, Prince, Winona Ryder, Tony Curtis, Oprah, Nicholas Cage and more. Praise for Dafydd Jones: "Dafydd catches those moments of genuine exhilaration, wealth and youth." - The Hollywood Reporter "Mr. Jones goes about his business with cheery zest and a wicked eye." - New York Times "Some carefully tended public images are punctured with such rapier precision that one can hear the hiss as they deflate." - Mitchell Owens, The World of Interiors "Sublime vintage photographs..."- Hermione Eyre, the Telegraph "Modest though he is, Dafydd's photographs will endure for having perfectly captured a society on the brink of decline." - Country & Townhouse podcast "The New York book is an evocative historical document, brimming with nostalgia and menace." - Hannah Marriott, The Guardian "The best party photographers, and their numbers are few, are like snipers... Dafydd Jones is the sniper's sniper - the best of the best." Graydon Carter, foreword from New York: High Life / Low Life "Dafydd's brilliant evocation of a time and a class only seem more potent today, when we know that so many of the moneyed twits in his '80s portfolio ended up running the country, as they always have" - Tina Brown, The New Yorker
Rebellious Forests
- A collection of unique photographs from the Pur矇pecha region of Michoac獺n, Mexico, which present a world that rebels against the changes of history in a constant desire not to disappear- The images in this book highlight two viewpoints: on the one hand, that of the Pur矇pecha themselves, a forest civilization marked by an indomitable spirit of rebellion and a desire to present their virtually unchanging world; and, on the other hand, that of a photographer astonished by the events unfurling around him who portrays them in a unique, unrepeatable record. Both these viewpoints intertwine to create images in which the spiral of time becomes so dense that it seems to trap the reader in this ancestral world- Featuring unique previously unseen pictures- Includes the stories behind the photographs- Depicts fascinating hidden communitiesCher獺n is a social, political, and anthropological phenomenon without precedent in Mexico. Rebellious Forests gathers together images captured by Pavel Hroch during his travels in the land of the Pur矇pecha in Michoac獺n, particularly the towns of Cher獺n, Comachu矇n, and Cocucho. These photographs show a world confronting global problems such as deforestation, water shortages, and the violence of organized crime while also rebelling against historical changes, driven by a constant desire to endure. The book reflects the Pur矇pecha community's successful struggle to achieve autonomy and control over their territory after a confrontation that pitted armed locals against illegal loggers and drug traffickers. This resistance led to the expulsion of these invaders and the establishment of Pur矇pecha systems of security and self-government, based on their own cosmology and traditional practices.
Julian and Jonathan
Photographer Sarah Mei Herman was 20 when her half-brother Jonathan was born in 2001. When he was a small child she began to photograph him regularly alongside her father, Julian. The images in her forthcoming book--Julian & Jonathan--span more than 20-years and document Jonathan's visible growth from child to adult, the steadier changes in Julian and Herman's own journey as an artist, daughter, and half-sister.
Abandoned Bodie
Bodie, California's iconic ghost town, preserves hauntingly authentic remnants of frontier life in timeless decay. In the remote reaches of California's High Sierras lie the substantial remains of an outpost known as Bodie--the best-preserved of America's famed Western ghost towns. Although the vast majority of Bodie burned to ash many decades ago, what has persevered still seems amazingly comprehensive compared to most other ghost town sites. Designated a state historic park in 1962, Bodie has been both well cared for and yet left mostly in a state of arrested decay, rendering it as a place truly out of time. A striking sense of authenticity is experienced when strolling its lanes and observing the dilapidated exteriors, and a peek through any given window or doorway can reveal still-life scenes which startle all the more--artifacts and furniture ordered precisely as they were left in place by the last inhabitants.Abandoned Bodie presents a thorough depiction of the structures and other traces found there which speak with remarkable clarity to a bygone place and way of life. It also documents the elemental plight of an entire village left on its own to bear the ravages of time.
Virtual Photography
While it has traditionally been seen as a means of documenting an external reality or expressing an internal feeling, photography is now capable of actualizing never-existed pasts and never-lived experiences. Thanks to the latest photographic technologies, we can now take photos in computer games, interpolate them in extended reality platforms, or synthesize them via artificial intelligence. To account for the most recent shifts in conceptualizations of photography, this book proposes the term virtual photography as a binding theoretical framework, defined as a photography that retains the efficiency and function of real photography (made with or without a camera) while manifesting these in an unfamiliar or noncustomary form.
Minor White, Memorable Fancies
The personal journals of one of postwar America's most influential photographers, published for the first time One of the most significant unpublished texts in the history of photography, Memorable Fancies is the daybooks of Minor White, an artist who played a leading role in shaping the practice of photography in postwar America. Begun in the early 1930s and taking its name from a series of dialogues in William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, these writings are part diary, part photography manual, and part aesthetic treatise. Minor White, Memorable Fancies presents this work in its entirety for the first time, offering an intimate look at the ideas and interior life of one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century. In this beautifully illustrated volume, art historian Todd Cronan sheds light on White's guiding concerns and the connections between White's writings and his public practice as a photographer and influential publisher and teacher. White's journal is accompanied by an array of photographs by White as well as annotations that provide background and context, illuminating White's life and career while capturing a vibrant and inventive moment in the history of modern photography. Challenging our assumptions about photographic agency and the interplay between art and life, Minor White, Memorable Fancies engages deeply with the creative potential of photographic work, the nature and effect of artworks on viewers, and the formative role that chance plays in the production of photographs. Southampton Reflections
Southampton has been a major port on England's South Coast since the medieval era and sections of the ancient city walls remain today. In the nineteenth century the town expanded further following the formation of the Southampton Docks Company, building of a railway connection with London and the growth of shipbuilding and other related industries. Devastated by aerial bombardment in the Second World War, much of Southampton had to be rebuilt in the decades afterwards. Development continues to the present day, including new housing, leisure and retail areas along the waterfront. Southampton Reflections features an exciting collection of historic and modern pictures that are individually merged to reveal how the area has changed over the decades. Each of the 180 pictures in this book combines a recent color view of Southampton with the matching sepia archive scene. Through the split-image effect, readers can see how streets, buildings and everyday life have transformed with the passing of time. Local authors Ben Waring, Peter Wardall and Rod Andrews present this fascinating visual chronicle that ingeniously reflects past and present glimpses of Southampton. This book will be of interest to residents, visitors, local historians and all those with links to the area.
Jarrow Reflections
Jarrow's early history is associated with its medieval monastery, home of the Anglo-Saxon scholar Bede, but much of the town developed later during the Industrial Revolution, when coal mining and shipbuilding became the dominant industries in the area. The closure of Palmer's shipyard in the 1930s dealt a serious blow to the town's prosperity but by the start of the Second World War new industries opened in the town: a ship-breaking yard, an engineering works and a steelworks. The docks have been largely filled in after the last shipyard closed in the 1980s and the town has been redeveloped in recent decades. Jarrow Reflections features an exciting collection of historic and modern pictures that are individually merged to reveal how the area has changed over the decades. The 180 pictures in this book combine a recent colour view of Jarrow with the matching sepia archive scene. Through the split-image effect, readers can see how streets, buildings and everyday life have transformed with the passing of time. Professional photographer and local author Paul Perry presents this fascinating visual chronicle that reflects past and present glimpses of Jarrow.
