Appendicitis

2025/05/30 出版

Appendicitis involves inflammation of the vermiform appendix, which is associated with a systemic inflammatory response in humans. Emergency surgical treatment is often necessary as it is the leading cause of surgery-related mortality. However, correct diagnosis remains a challenge due to variations in symptoms. This study assessed the impact of gender, seasonal variations, and the immunohistochemical expression of the IL 6 and 8 cytokines in patients with appendicitis at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa. A total of 313 patients diagnosed with appendicitis and did appendicectomy were enrolled in the research from January 2015 to December 2020. The findings indicate that seasonal changes influence the outcome of appendicitis, with a statistically significant rise in cases reported during summer in comparison to winter. Among the studied subjects, females constituted a higher percentage than males, making up 56.9% (n=178) while males represented 43.1% (n = 135). Interleukins 6 and 8 were markedly expressed in appendix tissues regardless of age, gender, or season.

Haridra - Environment

2025/05/29 出版

Ayurveda maintains 3 essential humours, which cause disease if they become imbalanced. These three humours known as 'Vata', 'Pita', and 'Kapha' are usually translated in English as Wind, Bile and Phlegm. Occasionally, in the surgical tradition, a fourth humour - blood - was added. Surgery and physical Ayurveda became two separate traditions; surgery being more important amongst the Buddhists, who for one reason or another are less hung up about ritual purity and contact with taboo bodily products such as blood. Ayurveda is an Ancient Indian medicine, which has its beginning in the sixth century BC and thrives even to the present-day. There was once a celebrated doctor called Charaka who lived in the second century. He was one of the greatest physicians who have ever lived. He recorded the fact that the Gods themselves were perplexed by the continued existence of disease, which was a hindrance to humanity's progress to enlightenment. These same Gods, he says, therefore prepared the way for Ayurveda, which literally means the 'science of longevity' to be taught to the human race. Ayurveda is not just the science of curing diseases, but of preventing them too by developing immunity.

Women in Medicine

Anne,Walling  著
CRC Press 出版
2025/05/28 出版

In telling the history of women in medicine, the pioneers (especially the turbulent ones) are rightly remembered and celebrated in books, articles, memorials, awards, names of buildings, and organizations - even in stone statues and memorials. In contrast, the generation who began the transition from minority status to the current numerical equity are seldom memorialized, yet without the efforts of these few determined women in what was unambiguously a male profession, the achievements of these pioneers could easily have withered. This book is written to celebrate this unique generation of women who entered medicine between the Second World War and the early 1970s - determined women who just wanted to be doctors but ended up fundamentally changing the profession. Utilizing oral histories from 37 women who became physicians between 1948 and 1975, these women tell their stories in their own words and provide a valid picture of their experiences throughout their careers that has much resonance for those entering or practicing medicine today. Women in Medicine: Stories from the Girls in White will be of interest to all health professionals or those considering entering health professions, particularly women, and their advisers and supporters, to medical educators, and to medical historians seeking to understand the progress of women in medicine and other professions since the end of WWII.

Do Less Harm

2025/05/27 出版

Offers reflections, provocative questions, and practical strategies for ethical, responsible approaches to health history. In Do Less Harm, editors Courtney E. Thompson and Kylie M. Smith bring together a group of leading historians and scholars to confront one of the most pressing questions in health history: How can we ethically approach stories of medicine and health without perpetuating harm? This thought-provoking collection invites readers into a crucial conversation about the responsibilities of historians when documenting the past. Through carefully curated essays, the contributors explore the ethical dilemmas that arise in researching, teaching, and writing about the history of health care. From patient privacy to the politics of archives, the essays cover how health histories have often overlooked, misunderstood, or misrepresented the people and communities most affected by medical practices. The contributors challenge the assumptions of the field, offering a more thoughtful approach to historical research--one that emphasizes empathy, accountability, and inclusivity. The book raises provocative questions and proposes practical strategies for historians and scholars to do less harm in their work and is organized around key themes such as research, teaching, writing, and public engagement, making it an indispensable resource for anyone working in the history of health care, ethics, or the health humanities. With its engaging style and accessible insights, Do Less Harm offers a fresh and timely perspective for academics, students, and readers interested in the ethical challenges of representing the past.

Complex Ethics Consultations

Paul J,Ford  著
2025/05/25 出版

Clinical ethics consultants navigate dilemmas across patient care, public health, and healthcare policy. Issues span from the beginning to the end of life, complex discharges, employment of novel technologies, and visitation restrictions. The second edition relays the narratives of fraught, complex consultations through richly detailed cases. Authors explore the ethical reasoning, professional issues, and emotional aspects of these impossibly difficult scenarios. Describing the affective aspects of ethics consultations, authors highlight the lasting effects of these cases on their practices. They candidly reflect on evolving professional practice as well as contemporary concerns and innovations while attending to equity and inclusivity. Featuring many new chapters, cases are grouped together by theme to aid teaching, discussion, and professional growth. The book is intended for clinicians, bioethicists, and ethics committee members with an interest in the choices made in real-life medical dilemmas as well as the emotional cost to those working to improve the situations.

Exploring the World of Parasites

Intechopen 出版
2025/05/25 出版

The world of parasites is as fascinating as it is intricate, revealing a hidden realm where survival depends on extraordinary adaptations and complex interactions. Parasites, organisms that live on or within a host organism to obtain nutrients, have existed for millions of years, shaping ecosystems and influencing the evolution of their hosts. While often associated with disease, parasites also play vital roles in ecosystems. They help regulate populations of other organisms, contributing to biodiversity. For instance, parasitic infections can prevent dominant species from overwhelming others, thus maintaining balance within communities. However, their impact on human and animal health is significant, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where parasitic diseases remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The study of parasites, parasitology, has advanced significantly over the years, providing insights into their biology, host interactions, and control methods.

The most common kind of cancer in women is breast cancer. Breast cancer is still a complicated and diverse illness that necessitates multimodal treatment approaches, even with advancements in early detection and targeted therapy development. While standard therapeutic approaches such as hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical resection, and monoclonal antibody-based regimens have significantly improved patient outcomes, they are frequently linked to side effects and variable efficacy based on patient-specific factors and tumor subtype. In recent years, interest has grown in the integration of complementary and alternative medicine, particularly phytotherapy, into conventional oncology care. Various herbal compounds have demonstrated anticancer properties in preclinical studies, including pro-apoptotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-angiogenic effects. This book provides an overview on breast cancer, its risk factors, and different therapeutic regimens including herbal medications.

Efficacy of Non-Acetylcholinesterase Therapies in Cognitive Decline

2025/05/23 出版

Cognitive decline in aging populations, particularly among those diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), poses an increasing public health challenge. For decades, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors have remained the cornerstone of pharmacologic intervention in these groups. However, growing concerns about their cardiovascular and respiratory adverse effects - especially in elderly patients with multiple comorbidities - necessitate the exploration of alternative therapies with safer profiles and potentially superior efficacy. This work presents the findings of a systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at identifying and evaluating non-acetylcholinesterase treatments for cognitive decline in patients with MCI, AD, or in individuals aged 65 years and above. We conducted a rigorous literature search of PubMed and the Cochrane Library, covering studies published between January 1, 1990, and September 30, 2024. Eligible studies included randomized clinical trials and longitudinal follow-ups that utilized standardized neurological assessments to measure cognitive outcomes.

PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ZINGIBER ZERUMBET (L) Roscoe ex Smith

2025/05/23 出版

Zingiber zerumbet (L.) roscoe ex Smith is perennial aromatic plant species in the Zingiberaceae family, it primarily found in Asia tropical and subtropical regions, it is used as food and medicine. Numerous pharmacological effects of plant consisting of anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-allergic and anti-bacterial purpose. Modern cultivation and conservation measures are necessary to prevent overexploitation, which goes well beyond their natural potential for regeneration due to declining populations. For sustainable cultivation and conservation, high-frequency multiplication techniques in particular need to be developed. Through quick multiplication rates, in vitro propagation (also known as tissue culture) can address the problems and aid in sustainable breeding, cultivation, and preservation. True-to-type progenies and homogeneity in the products, such as the bioactive chemicals, are offered by micropropagation. Additionally, the preservation of germplasm in vitro (from healthy meristems) has benefits such as reducing the need for space and labour as well as preventing the buildup of infections and mutations.
