Noncommunicable Diseases

Routledge 出版
2022/09/01 出版

Noncommunicable Diseases: A Compendium introduces readers to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) - what they are, their burden, their determinants and how they can be prevented and controlled. Focusing on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory disease and their five shared main risk factors (tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and air pollution) as defined by the United Nations, this book provides a synopsis of one of the world's biggest challenges of the 21st century. NCDs prematurely claim the lives of millions of people across the world every year, with untold suffering to hundreds of millions more, trapping many people in poverty and curtailing economic growth and sustainable development. While resources between and within countries largely differ, the key principles of surveillance, prevention and management apply to all countries, as does the need to focus resources on the most cost-effective and affordable interventions and the need for strong political will, sufficient resources, and sustained and broad partnerships. This compendium consists of 59 short and accessible chapters in six sections: (i) describing and measuring the burden and impact of NCDs; (ii) the burden, epidemiology and priority interventions for individual NCDs; (iii) social determinants and risk factors for NCDs and priority interventions; (iv) global policy; (v) cross-cutting issues; and (vi) stakeholder action. Drawing on the expertise of a large and diverse team of internationally renowned policy and academic experts, the book describes the key epidemiologic features of NCDs and evidence-based interventions in a concise manner that will be useful for policymakers across all parts of society, as well as for public health and clinical practitioners.

The Longest Goodbye

Ingram 出版
2022/08/30 出版

Are we ever ready to say goodbye? She looked out into the yard sprinkled with spring dandelions. "Yellow flowers," she said, searching for her words. We knew something wasn't right. That's when things began to fall apart for our family, when our longest goodbye journey began-the defining before-and-after moment. And now, looking back, it's been almost a decade of slow loss and drawn-out grief as we slowly let go of our beautiful mom. In the middle of it all, though, we have learned to look for hope and chase down joy, discovering that, in spite of our pain, there are always gifts to be found, even on the hardest of days.Alzheimer's disease affects almost fifty million people worldwide. It touches people across every walk of life. So, how do millions of people figure out how to love as they let go? The Longest Goodbye is a collection of stories and moments not just about the clinical side of memory loss-but the emotional heart journey. It is a story that shows how joy and grief are often intertwined and wrapped up together in the glorious mess of life. The Longest Goodbye encourages readers to remember the ones they love while they are still here and to intentionally celebrate and live through the pain and hard days. It's filled with tears, hope, and bitter-sweet moments all held together by the beautiful love of a mother and daughter holding onto a life filled with memories, while learning to let go and say goodbye.

Shelly's heartwarming, poignant, personal account of her decade-long journey of saying goodbye to her mom who suffered from memory loss will be a source of comfort and hope to anyone going through a similar experience." Carey Nieuwhof Bestselling Author, Speaker, and Host of the Carey Nieuwhof Leadership Podcast "In The Longest Goodbye, Shelly gives us hope and help to navigate when a loved one faces memory loss. Shelly shares her decade-long journey watching her mother decline with Alzheimer's disease. Through heartfelt stories and reflections, she gives her readers a glimpse into the pain of seeing a loved one slowly fade away while at the same time looking for hope-filled moments along the way. Shelly expresses how joy and pain can co-exist and where to look when everything feels lost. And most of all, her experience shows how the bonds of family and unconditional love carried her through. This book isn't about the clinical part of the disease; it's about the heart and how to hold on through all the seasons of memory loss." Kevin ScottAuthor, Leadership Expert, and Co-founder of ADDO "It's much easier to write fiction than to share a hard, human story of love and loss for others to read. Shelly has brilliantly authored pages that share the hard and the good of loving someone fiercely, while losing them slowly to Alzheimer's. Shelly is both honest and honoring with her words as she draws the reader into the journey of the one thing she feared most-her mother's diagnosis and slow decline due to Alzheimer's. I Was Healthy Until the Day I Wasn’t

Jim,Parise  著
Outskirts Press 出版
2022/08/25 出版

I Was Healthy Until The Day I Wasn't chronologues the journey of the author through his cancer treatments, from the initial diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma through multiple chemo regimens and relapses, a stem cell transplant and finally remission. Written at first as blog entries over a period of 4 months, it also focuses on the people - the caretakers, the physicians and health care workers and mostly the patients - whose lives and experiences became inexorably entwined with his own. The stories of other patients' circumstances motivated the author to turn the blog entries into a full-length book. So inspiring are their stories, each shedding light on the disease itself, the bravery and courage, the strength and the stamina to continue fighting, sometimes against seemingly insurmountable odds. There are as many books written about cancer and its treatment as there are types of cancer. No two experiences are the same. Each person has to choose his own path. And how he or she proceeds is a very personal choice. Even not choosing is a choice in and of itself. Cancer patients are an elite group, a band of brothers and sisters who share their experiences, who bolster each other in times of need and who lean on each other for support despite those differences. This book highlights their stories and makes clear that while they endure the indignities of this disease, they are not invisible. They exist. They need to be heard.

Dementia (Memory Loss)

Ingram 出版
2022/08/23 出版

Dementia (memory loss) or loss of cognitive skills has become a major health concern for older individuals. In 2021, 6.2 million Americans aged 65 years and above were living with dementia, and the numbers are said to only increase in the future. Since the current preventive recommendations have failed to have any significant impact on reducing the incidence of dementia, 'Dementia (Memory Loss) - How to Prevent and Improve Treatment' By Kedar N. Prasad will allow doctors and researchers to collect more data for in-depth research on how the treatment of dementia can be improved and made more impactful. The book is educational, well-researched, and eye-opening for patients with dementia and for doctors to learn how to improve the patient's memories. It focuses on the early damages caused by this disease and how a comprehensive mixture of micronutrients can also reduce the progression and prevent and improve memory loss, and paves the way for further research to develop improved treatments for dementia. It has the potential to work as a guide for scientists and researchers on how to make the treatment for this disease bearable and positive.

Through Your Doors Again A journey in poetry from classroom to chemotherapy

Ingram 出版
2022/07/26 出版

In January 2021, I found a lump on my right breast. Less than one month later; I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A day I will never forget. One of my ways of dealing with this diagnosis was through writing poetry, often when sitting waiting for appointments or at moments during the day when inspiration came. It was a way to document my journey through cancer- both the good and the challenging. The poems are written in date order and are like diary entries to document the various stages of my treatment. This cancer journey is unique to me, as I am aware that everyone's cancer journey is so different. My message to all reading this book is the importance of breast self-check. And maybe for someone else out there who is going through or has gone through cancer, these words might provide some comfort or understanding. Writing poetry helped ease the journey of illness for me. Cancer can be a solitary journey, but by harnessing the intense emotions it generated into poetry, I found a community and support. Like me, many other cancer survivors found beauty and grace interwoven with their devastation, and an intense appreciation for life after going through cancer. These poems felt like snapshots of the beautiful and terrible moments, and writing them was as therapeutic for me as the treatment I was receiving. And for some, writing poetry can be a powerful way to express their feelings about cancer and their journey back to health. All profits from the sale of this book go to a cancer charity who are so dear to my heart: Cork ARC House, which supported me on my journey through breast cancer treatment. Thankfully I am out the other side and in recovery. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do for anyone undergoing cancer treatment and for their families.Details about the work of Cork ARC House can be found on corkcancersupport. ie. The Cancer Blackout

Nat,Morris  著
Ingram 出版
2022/07/05 出版

There is no disease whose prime cause is better known. That the prevention of cancer will come there is no doubt. But how long prevention will be avoided depends on how long the prophets of agnosticism will succeed in inhibiting the application of scientific knowledge in cancer. This printing of THE CANCER BLACKOUT, reflects the many rapid changes in cancerology of the last few years, probably exceeding those of the last century. To understand cancer, the author writes, it must be considered in its entirety, not only as a disease that has often been mercilessly exploited, but also as a moral cause, as a scientific problem, and a battleground for bitter professional conflicts. How and why, the all powerful professional cliques and organizations have foisted their "treatments of choice" upon the public is realistically exposed. THE CANCER BLACKOUT reveals many new developments, heralding a new phase in cancer treatment, utilizing the achievements of independent workers and vindicating the heroic struggles of Koch, Ivy, Coffey and Humber, and others whose work is described.

Hope for the Hopeless

Jimmy,Blanco  著
Ingram 出版
2022/06/09 出版

Jimmy Blanco was one of the longest living survivors of the world's deadliest brain cancer and he defied the odds without traditional medicine. In 1995, he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme grade IV and given less than four months to live. From day one he rejected chemotherapy and radiation and the doctor's death sentence for him. He self-treated with natural medicine, radically altered his diet, practiced visualization and other mental focus techniques, and had a healthy faith in God. He fought eight incredible years against the tumor that doesn't quit. Jimmy began writing a book about his journey but sadly did not finish it. Fifteen years after his death, his widow, Elizabeth, found the unfinished book he'd been writing and gave it to their daughter, Jamie. Now as an adult and award-winning journalist, Jamie knew what she had to do-complete her father's work. She has investigated the biggest factors that contributed to her father's miraculous remission and done a deep dive into the latest brain cancer research, both the great and the lacking. This multigenerational memoir spans more than twenty years and tells the story of heartache, miracles, the power of nature and faith, and the bonds of love that disease and death cannot break.

A cancer and thousand needles

Laura,Naudin  著
Ingram 出版
2022/05/19 出版

This is a quick translation of my testimony in French. English is therefore not perfect. At 24, I was told that I had cancer, more specifically stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma. The caregivers reassured me: it is a cancer that can be cured in 6 months! Except that 3 years later I am still in treatment. After months of chemotherapy and an autograft, I am currently benefiting from immunotherapy. When you spend most of your time in the hospital, you have many adventures. I quickly understood that I must not let myself be pushed around and impose my choices to better live with hospitalizations! I take you into a medical world that can be scary, but is not always as dark as you think. Through my testimony, I wish to break the taboo of cancer.

Covid-19

Tellwell Talent 出版
2022/05/12 出版

Human history has been befallen by a long chain of famines, epidemics, and pandemics. During this current COVID-19 pandemic, our world remains under-prepared to predict, detect, respond, prevent infectious disease outbreaks, and a fortiori pandemics-whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberately released. These threats endanger lives, disrupt families and societies, and wreak havoc on economies. They represent the ultimate equal opportunity condition! They do not respect national boundaries, do not discriminate between different ethnicities, religions, social or economic status or even age, and can spread rapidly, jeopardizing the health, security, and prosperity of all world countries. Indeed, physical distance alone no longer provides protection as pathogens can move from one point on Earth to almost any other place in the world within less than 36 hours! Yet, the cost of failing to control outbreaks, ruining and losing lives, destabilizing the social fabric, and decimating economies is considerably greater than the cost of prevention. It is therefore in each country's security interest to strengthen global health security and manage the risk of infectious disease outbreaks that might further develop into full-blown pandemics. Having hosted several variants of the original causal coronavirus, this global warning applies particularly to the African continent where health security needs particular highlighting, multidisciplinary engagement and multisector coordination need strengthening, and financial preparedness is direly needed. Against this background, COVID-19 was naturally selected as the main theme for the 2020-2021 SASA International Conference that was jointly co-hosted by the Society for the Advancement of Science in Africa, the Uganda Ministry of Health, and other partners (World Health Organization). This volume encapsulates a range of perspectives and associated recommendations. The health as well as socio-economic challenges glaringly manifested by the pandemic are discussed for preparation and control to render African societies more resilient, including response and treatment to meet the African contexts; education and transformation to address poverty concerns; envisaging and shaping new futures to cater for a more holistic and inclusive wellbeing; and adoption of scientific innovation to meet future demands for disease control.

Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People

Ingram 出版
2022/05/04 出版

For caregivers of deeply forgetful people: a book that combines new ethics guidelines with an innovative program on how to communicate and connect with people with Alzheimer's.How do we approach a deeply forgetful loved one so as to notice and affirm their continuing self-identity? For three decades, Stephen G. Post has worked around the world encouraging caregivers to become more aware of--and find renewed hope in--surprising expressions of selfhood despite the challenges of cognitive decline. In this book, Post offers new perspectives on the worth and dignity of people with Alzheimer's and related disorders despite the negative influence of hypercognitive values that place an ethically unacceptable emphasis on human dignity as based on linear rationality and strength of memory. This bias, Post argues, is responsible for the abusive exclusion of this population from our shared humanity. With vignettes and narratives, he argues for a deeper dignity grounded in consciousness, emotional presence, creativity, interdependence, music, and a self that is not gone but differently abled. Post covers key practical topics such as: - understanding the experience of dementia- noticing subtle expressions of continuing selfhood, including paradoxical lucidity - perspectives on ethical quandaries from diagnosis to terminal care and everything in between, as gleaned from the voices of caregivers- how to communicate optimally and use language effectively - the value of art, poetry, symbols, personalized music, and nature in revealing self-identity- the value of trained dementia companion dogsAt a time when medical advances to cure these conditions are still out of reach and the most recent drugs have shown limited effectiveness, Post argues that focusing discussion and resources on the relational dignity of these individuals and the respite needs of their caregivers is vital. Grounding ethics on the equal worth of all conscious human beings, he provides a cautionary perspective on preemptive assisted suicide based on cases that he has witnessed. He affirms vulnerability and interdependence as the core of the human condition and celebrates caregivers as advocates seeking social and economic justice in an American system where they and their loved ones receive only leftover scraps. Racially inclusive and grounded in diversity, Dignity for Deeply Forgetful People also includes a workshop appendix focused on communication and connection, A Caregiver Resilience Program, by Rev. Dr. Jade C. Angelica.

The Manhood RX

Ingram 出版
2022/05/02 出版

A top urologist's prescription for better sexual health and overall wellness. According to research studies, men with health problems, and more specifically sexual health problems, are more likely than women to have had no recent contact with a doctor regardless of income or ethnicity. This reluctance to seek medical help means that for men, their diseases often go undetected until it is significantly progressed, and this late discovery has serious consequences. To make matters worse, when men do see their physicians, many doctors find it difficult to talk about sexual health with their patients. Common conditions such as erectile dysfunction or Peyronie's disease (an acquired penile curvature) are often dismissed or simply go unaddressed. This avoidance creates real health problems: erectile dysfunction (ED)alone affects as much as 20% of men worldwide, occurring in as much as 52% of men between the ages 40 and 70. Serious skin cancers, penile injuries, and infections can go untreated for years. And, doctors lose a valuable tool in predicting other chronic health issues when sexual health isn't discussed. Dr. Burnett takes a deep dive here into identifying what healthy sexual function actually looks like, and clearly identifies the distinct components of the male sexual response that every healthy man experiences. For each of these components, readers will learn about the specific problems that can present, their underlying or contributing causes, and how each can be resolved. It will explode the myth that the only way to enhance men's sexual health is through testosterone therapies. Instead, his effective prescription for enhanced sexual function and overall health highlights the best that evidence-based medicine has to offer: a comprehensive mixture of easy yet important lifestyle changes, the most advanced medications including hormone therapies when they are appropriately administered, mental health therapies, external aids, and surgery. In total, readers will have a cutting-edge life strategy for achieving optimal sexual health now and for years to come.
