A Short Primer on Why Cancer Still Sucks
Have you ever wondered why cancer remains such a dreadful illness? Why is it so common? How can you reduce your cancer risk? Why is screening not better at finding cancers early? How does cancer make people feel so sick? How do different types of treatment work, why might they fail, and how do they cause side effects? What role does our immune system play? Do alternative and complementary therapies work? Why has progress been so painfully slow? What can we do to speed progress? How can we reduce the very high cost of effective new therapies?Which healthcare system (Canadian or American) is better at caring for cancer patients? What can the two systems learn from each other? In this book, oncologist Dr. David J. Stewart addresses these common, vexing questions about cancer. He also discusses what future changes we can anticipate. Each chapter starts with a Short Primer section that tries to answer these questions in a way that can be understood by patients, their families, and the public. This Short Primer section is followed by a Further Details section for anyone wanting to take a somewhat deeper dive into the topic. The intent of this book is to inform, so that the reader can better understand the enemy we face. But it is also a call to action. There are too many impediments to progress. We can and must fix this!

What happens when life throws together a busy, enthusiastic, doctor-daughter and her bereaved, disenchanted, dependent father? What happens when science meets stubbornness and a parent needs parenting?Following her mother's death, Dr Helena Popovic puts her medical training and beliefs to the test when she becomes the carer for her elderly father who has encroaching dementia.A passionate medical practitioner and an international public speaker on Boost Your Brain and Turn Stress into Success, Helena finds herself living out everything she preached. This moving story is part personal diary, part scientific treatise and part practical guide, woven together with humorous anecdotes. The facts in this book will change your thinking - the story in this book will change your life.'Who would have thought that dementia could be such an adventure? That adventure, in fact, prevents dementia!' Dr Sarah Woodbury FRANZCOG

The Courage To be Imperfect
There are very few people in this age who can say they have remained untouched by cancer. If you haven't had it yourself, you probably know someone who has. For those of you who have had cancer, this book was written to let you know you are accepted and valuable. For those of you that are supporting a loved one or friend through cancer, this story will help you understand their needs mentally as well as physically, and to accept them as they are. With all the talk lately about being a survivor, I feel I have earned the right, more than many, to be awarded that title. I have battled cancer four times and defeated it. Each time I dealt with it, I learned to become bigger than the disease and to move beyond it, against tremendous odds. I learned that conventional coping mechanisms had negative results on both me and everyone around me. There is a way to truly live while enduring cancer so that the results are positive, regardless of the prognosis. A physician once told me that I have been able to achieve a mindset that we had only read about. This is my road to that mindset.

Activities Designed For Low Function At Any level
My hopes and dreams of helping those with Alzheimer's or other dementia have come to fruition with the completion of this book. For many years I've been seeing improvements firsthand and have felt the satisfaction of making a positive differencein the lives of your loved ones. I hope that using these therapeutic activities will be as rewarding for you and your loved ones as it is for me and my clients. It is difficult to find the words to describe the deep feelings that surfaced as I reached for remnants of memory to build upon. It is even more difficult to describe the euphoria I feel each time I see a smile on the face of someone who has had little to smile about. Imagine the comfort and satisfaction of seeing deteriorated relationships return to being productive and meaningful ones.
Handle with Care
A sensitive and loving story, Handle With Care is a sympathetic portrayal of the difficulties and trauma of caring for a parent suffering from the progressive deterioration of his or her mental facilities. Describing her mother's long, irreversible illness, Dorothy Brown candidly relates her feelings of shock, despair, and bewilderment and her later feelings of guilt, resentment, and sadness. More than just a personal account, this book is a valuable discussion of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, the options for care and/or treatment, and the financial and legal issues. Ms. Brown stresses the need for early diagnosis and points out that "senility" (a convenient catch-all term) is hardly accurate and is often misleading, allowing one to accept as inevitable what may in fact be treatable. She also describes the findings of research that hold out hope for better diagnosis and more effective treatment in the future.

Caring for Nigel
At the age of sixty-nine Nigel Murray, a retired university lecturer and former Army officer, was diagnosed with dementia. Doctors suspected he was suffering from a rare and degenerative neurological disorder known as Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). However, Nigel also had many of the symptoms of both Parkinson's disease and Lewy Body dementia and an official diagnosis was never made. For four years Nigel's wife, Eileen, kept a diary. This was her "safety valve" - an outlet for the daily stresses of caring for him at home, as his mental and physical health slowly deteriorated. In her diary she gives a frank and detailed account of his challenging and erratic behaviour, his bizarre hallucinations, the relentless struggle with his incontinence and the endless disturbed nights.Even in her darkest moments, Eileen's dry Scottish humour shines through - you will laugh one moment and be moved the next. You can't help but smile at Nigel's trousers with the "appetite mechanism" and his special "anti-dandruff comb".As the dementia advances, Nigel retreats into a busy world of army and lecturing duties, harking back to his earlier days. Eventually, the burden of running her own "one-woman nursing home" becomes too much for Eileen and her quest to find respite care begins. This presents challenges of its own. This true and touching account offers a unique insight into the day-to-day experience of caring for someone with dementia or a related illness. Some Amazon Five Star Reviews: ★★★★★ Excellent - a great read★★★★★ Loved it★★★★★ Very eye opening★★★★★ Brilliant book★★★★★ Sad but a good read★★★★★ A gem★★★★★ Five starsAlso Now Available in Large Print (ISBN: 9781914523182)

Hope for Cancer Patients at All Stages of illness
Throughout his decades as a practicing oncologist, Dr. Radha Vemuri treated patients with all types of cancer at all stages of illness. He learned that every patient needs more than just state of the art medicine whether at the beginning or final stages of cancer and at every point in between. All patients need hope! From hope comes the fortitude to fight for life and the peace to face whatever the future brings, whether it be balancing treatment with other activities or end-of-life concerns.Cancer patients often find themselves overwhelmed and this book shows how hope can be maintained throughout cancer treatment from diagnosis through whatever the end result may be.After receiving his own advanced cancer diagnosis, Radha personally tested the effectiveness of his longstanding philosophy and is now able to express the necessity of hope from both a patient's and physician's points of view.
Forced to Focus
FORCED TO FOCUSConsider our reality: the pandemic, division over "vaccination vs. non-vaccination," mask vs. no mask," global warming, abortion vs. life choice, social unrest, and senseless violence. Bias media in all forums are fueling the flames with every strategy of society and dysfunction in our families. So then, it is Pastor Ronald L. Griffins' assignment to use his personal experience during his cancer journey to encourage you as we all experience life together. In the face of what sometimes seems like there is no answer and no way out of this horrible place, Forced to Focus has given him a clearer picture and a closer relationship with God. Pastor Griffins' heart desire is that what he experienced will encourage you to refocus on God and discover that He is The Answer above all.
Dare to Discover Your Purpose
GEORGE JERJIAN is a mindset mentor, author, and speaker who retired after being given just six months to live by his doctor. Thankfully, the diagnosis was wrong and as soon as he could, he "unretired" and set to work, helping his tribe of baby boomers do the same. George has a business degree from Bradford University in England and a master's degree in journalism from New York University. He has been in business for over 40 years, working as a Chartered Marketer, a partner in US commercial real estate, and a financial adviser. He has authored 10 books, is an Emmy award-winning producer, a Distinguished Toastmaster, and founder of Retirement Rebellion. "Winston Churchill was just hitting his stride in his mid-sixties when he was elected Prime Minister of Great Britain and led the Allied Forces into WW2. Colonel Sanders, at the age of 65, began franchising KFC using his first Social Security check. Dare to Discover Your Purpose provides the mindset blueprint required to kickstart your so-called "retirement" years into high gear."Bob Proctor, Bestselling Author of You Were Born Rich, Toronto, Canada "Jerjian's unique book can help retirees discover their life 'purpose.' His DARE method guides retiring boomers to delve into their hearts and minds to create a blueprint for a new life of purpose and passion in the third age of life. This book can help reframe retirement and transform obstacles into opportunities."Ken Dychtwald, PhD, author of What Retirees Want and Radical Curiosity, Orinda, CA, USA "You can retire from work, but you can't retire from life. George Jerjian explains the vital importance of having purpose in later life and how to find it."Maggy Pigott, CBE, Author of How to Age Joyfully: Eight Steps to a Happier, Fuller Life, London, UK "If you didn't tiptoe through most of your life, why would you 'tiptoe to a quiet death'? It's the fundamental question George Jerjian asks all of us to consider as he challenges us to re-evaluate what it means to live life with hope, optimism, and empowerment. We all should dare to live Jerjian's rebellious retirement."Peter Kaldes, President & CEO, American Society on Aging, San Francisco, CA, USA "George Jerjian is a rebel with a cause. His cause is to awaken and inspire mid-lifers so they can prepare for the next stage of life. His key point is that every individual has the power to create a future that works for them, where they can flourish and prosper. But this will not just drop in your lap, it takes willingness and work. I commend George's work to you, so read this book, and get started on your journey of the rest of your life."Hunter Leonard, Bestselling Author, Founder Silver & Wise, Sydney, Australia To meet George Jerjian in person is one of life's great treats, but if you can't meet him personally, this little book of his will recharge the batteries of your life and change the way you think and behave. Wherever you go, you will create value and the planet will be a better place as a result.Professor Malcolm McDonald MA(Oxon) MSc PhD DLitt DSc, Emeritus Professor, Cranfield University School of Management, UK "George Jerjian's DARE method maps why and how to 'unretire' and provides the tools to help you find your own unique purpose."Martin Hyde, Associate Professor of Gerontology, Swansea University, UK
Positive Images
A tidal wave of panic surrounded homosexuality and AIDS in the 1980s and early 1990s, the period commonly called 'The AIDS Crisis'. With the advent of antiretroviral drugs in the mid '90s, however, the meaning of an HIV diagnosis radically changed. These game-changing drugs now enable many people living with HIV to lead a healthy, regular life, but how has this dramatic shift impacted the representation of gay men and HIV in popular culture? Positive Images is the first detailed examination of how the relationship between gay men and HIV has transformed in the past two decades. From Queer as Folk to Chemsex, The Line of Beauty to The Normal Heart, Dion Kagan examines literature, film, TV, documentaries and news coverage from across the English-speaking world to unearth the socio-cultural foundations underpinning this 'post-crisis' period. His analyses provide acute insights into the fraught legacies of the AIDS Crisis and its continued presence in the modern queer consciousness.

I Know What it's Like
When Jennifer Court began writing "I Know What it's Like" around 2011, her aim was to enlighten her children about the details of her cancer battle that began in the year 2000. The story slowly morphed into a way to help other ovarian cancer survivors. In the process of being shared with others, Jennifer discovered that "I Know What it's Like" has become a story of hope.
In Sickness and in Health
Did you ever think of going on a vacation with no idea of where you were going or how long you'd be away-not preparing, not packing, not bringing anything with you? Then, while you're on this vacation, you don't know where you are, you're not sure how you got there, you can't find a path to follow, and the route ahead is pure fog. You have no idea of where you're headed, and all you know is that you need to take one step after another just to keep on going. In Sickness and in Health documents such a journey, the author's personal journey, taken from his wife's Alzheimer's diagnosis until her death. As the disease progressed, the realities of daily life changed as Alzheimer's stole his wife's ability to function, her ability to communicate, her personality, and much more. But, while much of the focus is on Beth's deteriorating condition, this memoir also offers insight into the toll that Alzheimer's and, by extension, any terminal illness, takes on caregivers and survivors. The emotional roller coaster can be dramatic and can persist well past the death of the patient. But readers are also offered some practical advice about housekeeping items-finances, legal affairs, and considerations around care-each of which must be thought through for both the short and long term.Written from the heart, In Sickness and in Health offers solace to those who have lost someone to Alzheimer's or other terminal illnesses and assures them that they can get through this most painful time in their lives. It offers a glimpse into a world that we all too often go out of our way to avoid-and some suggestion for navigating it with a little less bewilderment when we can evade it no longer.

The Diabetic Information Handbook
I like to help people by making their lives simpler and less complex. At one time, I was one of my mother's caregivers. My sisters and I had difficulty keeping up with my mother's medical information and scheduling. We would often write information down on notepads and share what her medical issues were, results of her doctor's visit, and change in medication.Sometimes one of us would forget to write down information which resulted in lots of confusion and unnecessary phone calls to the doctors trying to find out the next medical appointment or changes in medication, or at times we did not notate response when a medication did not agree with my mom.We spent a lot of time going back-and-forth between ourselves and doctors' offices. One day, while I was with my mom at one of her medical appointments, the idea came to me to write one manual and include the medication doses, doctor's appointments, type of insulin, etc. Needless to say, this manual made everyone's life a little easier.

Cancer as a Wake-Up Call
An oncologist's integrative path to treating and living? better? with or beyond cancer-Dr. M. Laura Nasi presents a new way of looking at how we view and treat cancer. With current advances in medicine, we're learning more about the ways different aspects of our lives and health impact and interact with one another-why does one long-term smoker get diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer while another remains cancer-free? Why does someone exposed to a known carcinogen get sick while someone else is apparently immune? What seemingly unrelated factors end up playing key roles in disease etiology, progression, and prognosis? In this well-researched, inspiring, and easy-to-read guide, Dr. Nasi offers an integrative, whole-person approach to cancer, and explains how it is a systemic disease manifesting a global condition locally. Conventional medicine focuses on attacking malignant cells. Integrative medicine encourages chemo and radiation when necessary, while also focusing on a patient's internal balance to help halt the disease. Nasi draws on the latest research on the PNIE (psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine) network to help our systems recognize, repair, or eliminate the cancer cells, focusing on nutrition, stress management, exercise, adequate sleep, healthy relationships, and other body/mind/spirit modalities. Dr. Nasi encourages patients to become empowered agents of their own care.

Why Doctors Are Killing You
John Hildreth Atkins is a certified genius with more than sixty books to his credit. When this man speaks, people listen. Among his many accomplishments, he has expounded on domestic violence, quantum physics, and exposed organized crime in several books, including Prosecuting the Prosecution (which was instrumental in getting an innocent man out of prison) and A Jew Hides Well (an expose that shows who actually killed JFK and why. In this latter book, he used forensics to prove Oswald was totally innocent. In addition, Oswald had vertigo so bad he could not even look down...let alone shoot at anything. No shots were fired from the Texas School Book depository building; they were fired from he fourth floor of the Dal-Tex building across the street. In this book, he does a remarkable job of exposing the corruption that has everyone trembling like newborn babies. At a thousand dollars a shot, of course they want you to get several. Mo' money. But covid is not killing people; underlying conditions are. After reading this, you will never look at the government, or doctors, the same way again. At fifteen, his I.Q. was rated in excess of 187. Having read this book, I can see why. The man is amazing. If there is a quirk to this publication, it is his self-professed antisemitism. In his words: "God has no need for a chosen anything," and it is time for people to stop accepting that as an excuse. If your doctor has prescribed more than five pills, you might want to read this book. Covid deaths? If you were getting paid thirty thousand dollars to say a patient died of covid, wouldn't you say it? Why not? Finally, John explains how the Earth was formed, global warming, and the impending doom hanging over mankind. If you bought the book for no other reason, this one thing is well worth any price. Unbelievable? But true. What are you waiting for?

Mom and Dementia and Me
This book is the personal memoir of a daughter who discovers and tries to manage the onset of Lewy body dementia in her mother. Written in clear English by a layperson, it is not technical or scientific. Instead, it highlights the daughter's own experiences and lessons learned-as well as the mistakes-as she embarks on an unwelcome journey. The aim of the book is to help others who suddenly find themselves in the role of caregiver, especially those who have little training or experience with dementia patients. It discusses issues such as recognizing the early symptoms of dementia, how to adapt the home to support the person suffering from dementia, and how to secure and manage the services of medical doctors, home health care workers, and hospice nurses. It describes coping with the frightening symptoms of the disease, such as psychotic episodes, as well as some of the less serious side effects, such as brief memory losses. It also emphasizes the power and the importance of humor when one is faced with a deadly disease. Lewy body dementia kills about 250,000 people a year in the United States. There is no cure. This book is candid and supportive in its discussion of how to prepare for the end.
Diagnosis Female
Why do so many women have trouble getting effective and compassionate medical treatment? Diagnosis Female examines this widespread problem, with a focus on misdiagnosis and gender bias. The book zeroes in on specialties where women are more likely to encounter particularly troubling roadblocks: cardiology, neurology, chronic diseases and obstetrics/gynecology. All too often, when doctors can't figure out what is going on, women receive a diagnosis from the "all in her head" column -- this pattern is even worse for women of color, who may face significant challenges in medical settings. Throughout the work, Emily Dwass profiles women whose stories illustrate how medical practitioners often dismiss their claims or disregard their symptoms. Because women were excluded from important medical research for centuries, doctors don't always recognize that male symptoms and female symptoms can vary from issue to issue. Even today, most diagnostic tests and treatment plans are based on studies done on men. Throughout the book, women state that their voices do not matter, or worse, their concerns are greeted with skepticism or simply ignored when they seek help. The results can be devastating and long-lasting. Examining the bias inherent in the system, Dwass offers measures women can take to protect their health and receive better care. She offers advice, too, for the medical community in addressing the problem, so that outcomes can improve all around. If you're a woman, and you seek medical care, this book is a must-read. Your health depends upon it.
