I hear you
Talking and listening to people with Alzheimer's makes many of us uncomfortable. We may be inclined to contradict, to tune out, to become impatient. This knowledgeable guide will increase your confidence and show you many ways to connect kindly with someone with dementia. The same practical points apply whether you're interacting with a family member, a patient, a client, a colleague, or even someone you know more casually. You can promote purposeful living and preserve independence, even in brief encounters or visits. The more of us who become fluent in talking and listening to people with dementia, the less socially isolated and at risk this still-growing group will be.As neurologist William Shankle observes in the book's foreword: "From a scientific perspective, the final frontier is not space, as Star Trek proclaimed, but rather the understanding of behavior.... Dr. Jane Mahakian's direct experience, knowledge, and wisdom in finding solutions to these difficult problems is akin to that of an artist applying their creativity to express a new way of seeing the world." At the heart of I hear you are vignettes that will give you a glimpse into the realm of forgetfulness. You may find yourself nodding or smiling as you read them, or you may be touched or surprised.Gerontologist Jane L. Mahakian has specialized for more than 30 years in managing the care of people with forgetfulness, primarily Alzheimer's and other dementias. Writer Alyson Kuhn sought Dr. Jane's guidance when she needed to move her mother, who lived gracefully with dementia for ten years, to a memory care community. Alyson's detailed email exchanges and many phone calls with Dr. Jane over several years formed the basis for the I hear you writing partnership.

An Eight Year Goodbye
Samuel Valenti was an unpretentious, humble man who required very little in life to make him happy. He grew up during the Great Depression, working on the family farm in New Jersey, growing tomatoes to sell to Campbell Soup Company. Seeing the Hindenburg fly over his farm, receiving visits to the farm from his cousin, Anne Bancroft, and serving his country in World War II were a few of the highlights of his young adult life that he spoke of often. However, marrying the love of his life and having his daughter and son were the basis of what sustained him every day as he lived the American dream of working hard and prospering. Life had always been wonderful for Sam until later in his life when he started to lose his precious memories and abilities to Alzheimer's disease. His slow cognitive decline lasted for eight long years with his children by his side, helping him to navigate through the stages of the disease. An Eight-Year Goodbye is the story of Sam's journey through this debilitating illness with some helpful suggestions from the author on how to handle some of the heartbreaking challenges that Alzheimer's presents. It is also a story of love and compassion as Sam's children watch their father go from the vital, independent, vibrant man that they grew up with to the feeble, confused man who was no longer able to communicate with his family. This story will touch the heart of anyone whose loved one has experienced or is experiencing the long, slow deterioration that Alzheimer's disease brings.

The Cancer Misfit
You've survived cancer treatment - now what? The Cancer Misfit is here to support you when doctors, friends and family have gone 'back to normal' and assumed you can do the same. It's a life raft to help you navigate life after cancer treatment; to help you live better, think better and feel better and show you how to embrace your new future. After the treatment stops it can be difficult to know how to move on, and many survivors feel stuck in limbo between who they used to be before the diagnosis and who they are today. This is how Saskia felt when she was told the treatment was over: she felt like a Cancer Misfit, recovered physically, but mentally and emotionally still healing. Now, Saskia shares the tools that enabled her to become the happiest version of herself she has ever known. In these pages, you'll find the truth - that your best life and most beautiful self was not the person you were before your cancer diagnosis, but the person you are today; that you've become even more powerful because of the hell you went through, and that the greatest chapter of your life is here and now. The Cancer Misfit will introduce you to the person you've become as a consequence of the trauma you endured and help you to embrace your new life after treatment; a life full of confidence, happiness and peace.
Virus Mania
"The book 'Virus Mania' has been written with the care of a master-craftsman, courageously evaluating the medical establishment, the corporate elites and the powerful government funding institutions." Wolfgang Weuffen, MD, Professor of Microbiology and Infectious Epidemiology "The book 'Virus-Wahn' can be called the first work in which the errors, frauds and general misinformations being spread by official bodies about doubtful or non-virus infections are completely exposed." Gordon T. Stewart, MD, professor of public health and former WHO advisor - - - The population is terrified by reports of so-called COVID-19, measles, swine flu, SARS, BSE, AIDS or polio. However, the authors of "Virus Mania," investigative journalist Torsten Engelbrecht, Dr. Claus K繹hnlein, MD, Dr. Samantha Bailey, MD, and Dr. Stefano Scoglio, BSc PhD, show that this fearmongering is unfounded and that virus mayhem ignores basic scientific facts: The existence, the pathogenicity and the deadly effects of these agents have never been proven. The book "Virus Mania" will also outline how modern medicine uses dubious indirect lab tools claiming to prove the existence of viruses such as antibody tests and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The alleged viruses may be, in fact, also be seen as particles produced by the cells themselves as a consequence of certain stress factors such as drugs. These particles are then "picked up" by antibody and PCR tests and mistakenly interpreted as epidemic-causing viruses. The authors analyze all real causes of the illnesses named COVID-19, avian flu, AIDS or Spanish flu, among them pharmaceuticals, lifestyle drugs, pesticides, heavy metals, pollution, malnutrition and stress. To substantiate it, the authors cite dozens of highly renowned scientists, among them the Nobel laureates Kary Mullis, Barbara McClintock, Walter Gilbert and Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet as well as microbiologist and Pulitzer Prize winner Ren矇 Dubos, and it presents more than 1,400 sol

Leonardo’s Legacy
Serious inconsistencies and scientific gaps plague current dietary recommendations, especially when it comes to cancer. Moreover, these recommendations crash head on with many traditional, ethnic, and cultural practices around the world. Until we openly address what led to these recommendations, the overwhelming impact of philosophical and religious beliefs over science, and the fatal inconsistencies that lie within, we will be unable to have a candid conversation about what we should eat to fight cancer. Leonardo's Legacy is a first attempt to start this conversation."Dr. Champ's book weaves together a fascinating family history with the shifting science of how diet and cancer are related. Add a foray into the roots of dietary ideologies buried in the teachings of Plato and you have a provocative meditation on why we believe the - sometimes foolish - things we do about food and health. It is a book that should appeal to clinicians, researchers, and anyone interested in eating wisely."-Adele Hite, PhD, MPH, RDN

The Activist Cancer Patient
One in three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer during his or her lifetime. This book educates cancer patients on locating sources of legitimate cancer treatments that run the gamut from little-known ones to the very latest experimental therapies or drug trials. Based on her own experience and extensive research, the author discusses working constructively with a doctor, researching and evaluating treatment, and gaining access to the state-of-the-art and even experimental treatments.

Care at Home for People Living with Dementia
What 'kind' of community is demanded by a problem like dementia? As aspects of care continue to transition from institutional to community and home settings, this book considers the implications for people living with dementia and their carers. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and case studies from Canada, this book analyses the intersections of formal dementia strategies and the experiences of families and others on the frontlines of care. Considering the strains placed on care systems by the COVID-19 pandemic, this book looks afresh at what makes home-based care possible or impossible and how these considerations can help establish a deeper understanding necessary for good policy and practice.
Life Support
Food keeps us alive but good food gives us LifeImagine the world without grains or tubers. That means waking up one day to no bread, no tortillas, no corn, and no rice. Since Mother Nature gives in abundance, there would still be plenty to eat. We would eat fruits, vegetables, legumes, meat, seeds, and nuts. We would not starve yet the world would be in one big uproar. Why? Some groups of people would say that there is no food.Do you realize that people have fought wars over grains, and bread? Have you ever heard of a war that originated from vegetables? Not to say that they are not important, no, they are crucial and instrumental in keeping us in optimal health. I am simply implying that staple foods are particularly important to humans. Because of staple foods, people have initiated wars while others won wars and conquered empires by simply manipulating the supply and distribution of staple foods. The staples are the most consumed foods in the world. They fuel humanity, providing us with energy to grow and develop. Besides, they have loyally been with us since the days of foraging. Always giving, filling, fueling, and moving humans forward. What you may not realize is that staple foods are medicine. Over the years, cereal grains, roots, and tubers have acquired a bad name. The allegations leveled against them include weight gain, diseases, and low nutrition. The time to understand the role of staples in our bodies is now. After that, you can see how staples heal our bodies and fuel our brains. In this book, you will learn interesting facts about staples and their journey throughout history including; The journey from foraging to agricultureThe process of plant and animal domesticationHow big a role staples played in human civilizationTheir nutritional valuePractical information on what foods to make from grains, roots, and tubersHow to shop for staples; what to look out forTheir role in our healthStaples in preventive and curative medicineMore about carbohydratesThe famous gluten; is it good or bad?You have a chance to eat healthy food that is filling, full of nutrients, and tasty yet food that can improve your health forever. You heard the famous saying, 'Let your food be thy medicine' The time is here and now, do not be left behind. Take charge of your health by consuming whole grains and tubers. From There to Eternity
This is the story of the end of life journeys of two dissimilar but treasured people. One was the author's wife, Chris, who joined him on a path that brought them close to the community of people whose ancestors were among the first European settlers of New Mexico. The other, his friend, Baudelio, was the last of a long line of pioneers who found a home in the high country of northern New Mexico. The story had its final act for Chris and Baudelio at close to the same time but in far different ways: hers from the anguish of Alzheimer's, his from the slow decline after a lifetime of hard work. Other characters are the people met along the way and the places where they came together. One place was Santa Rita, the ephemeral Hispano community where they built a straw bale cabin. Another was the roadside caf矇 in a small town on the way to and from the remote cabin.

The Breakthrough
Follow along as this New York Times bestselling author details the astonishing scientific discovery of the code to unleashing the human immune system to fight in this "captivating and heartbreaking" book (The Wall Street Journal). For decades, scientists have puzzled over one of medicine's most confounding mysteries: Why doesn't our immune system recognize and fight cancer the way it does other diseases, like the common cold? As it turns out, the answer to that question can be traced to a series of tricks that cancer has developed to turn off normal immune responses -- tricks that scientists have only recently discovered and learned to defeat. The result is what many are calling cancer's "penicillin moment," a revolutionary discovery in our understanding of cancer and how to beat it. In The Breakthrough, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Nurse Charles Graeber guides readers through the revolutionary scientific research bringing immunotherapy out of the realm of the miraculous and into the forefront of twenty-first-century medical science. As advances in the fields of cancer research and the human immune system continue to fuel a therapeutic arms race among biotech and pharmaceutical research centers around the world, the next step -- harnessing the wealth of new information to create modern and more effective patient therapies -- is unfolding at an unprecedented pace, rapidly redefining our relationship with this all-too-human disease. Groundbreaking, riveting, and expertly told, The Breakthrough is the story of the game-changing scientific discoveries that unleash our natural ability to recognize and defeat cancer, as told through the experiences of the patients, physicians, and cancer immunotherapy researchers who are on the front lines. This is the incredible true story of the race to find a cure, a dispatch from the life-changing world of modern oncological science, and a brave new chapter in medical history.
I'm Sorry, It's Pancreatic Cancer
" I'm Sorry, It's Pancreatic Cancer" Is complete at 60,000 words. My memoir follows the fourteen month journey I took with Dava my wife of 40 years, and our four daughters from the moment we heard the diagnosis through how we coped with losing her. My words in telling our story are interspersed with my wife's journal entries as well as a few added journal entries from my daughter's journal and mine. Combined, these journal entries give powerful meaning and reaction to the events as they were happening in the moment. This memoir would appeal to anyone confronting this particular cancer of which there are 57,000 plus cases diagnosed each year.. Any person with a serious illness, as well as those close to the person afflicted, will find a kindred spirit in our story. The main theme that reverberates throughout is the tragedy of knowing the final outcome without spoiling the beauty of our story that still had yet to unfold as we continued the remaining days of our lives together. In addition, there are photographs of specific references in the text to make the story personal for all. This one time journey had no rehearsals. I was beside Dava nearly every step of our fourteen months watching and helping anyway I could as she courageously found the will each day to survive for those whom she loved most. Above all, love abounds all around and comes through vividly inour tragic and beautiful story. Sometimes Dava reveals she felt as a "dot on a wall" even around loved ones. This lonliness of an individual with a terminal illness comes across in dramatic fashion. Much as John Keats, whom I quote in the book, he stated, "A person in health as you are can have no conception of the horrors that nerves and a temper like mine go through." Dava's journals share a story of living with a terminal illness that thousands experience but are unable or unwilling to lay bare their vulnerabilities, the unrelenting lonliness held within, and the struggle to face the reactions to events and people around them. I, too thought her story was worth telling to help the many who might be timely touched by her testimony: to take each day given until there is simply no more to give.
