An Object-Oriented Approach to the Modeling and Visualization of Early-Stage Breast Cancer Tumors
Great strides have been made in controlling the progression of breast cancer, but medical professionals continue to rely primarily upon traditional mammography for early detection. Enhancing breast cancer detection capabilities-and thus reducing tumor detection time-should result in a reduction in mortality rates. The detection capabilities of mammography may be enhanced through improved modeling and visualization techniques. This thesis is an extension of initial research conducted at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Previous efforts focused on developing a mathematical model for simulating the growth of cancer within unconstrained 3-dimensional space. The research also explored the behavior of the model as it interacts with simulated breast tissue structures. This effort implements improvements suggested by the previous research and explores alternative modeling approaches. These approaches are implemented using object-oriented software engineering techniques within the Java programming environment. The model is first replicated in unconstrained 2- and 3-dimensional space, and then embellished to more closely model the semi-autonomous behavior of cancerous cells. Historically, the United States has assumed a reactive vice proactive posture as it relates to coping with the fiscal, and humanistic challenges that manifest within a nation at war, and those who experience the trauma of combat. The Army has proven slow to respond to the need to train and educate its leaders and instead has devoted vast capital on the assessment and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attacking the symptoms as they arise, vice attacking the stressors which cause the affliction. Aaron Fette lived with mental illness all his life. At age 15, he envisioned himself as a modern-day Jack Kerouac, living an adventure on the road that he would chronicle in his writing. Instead, he found himself fleeing from paranoid delusions that drove him from city to city. As a victim of abuse and someone who perpetuated violence, as a drug addict and alcoholic, and as a survivor of the US justice system, Aaron's story offers a unique perspective on some of the thorniest issues in our society today. He died of an opioid overdose in a homeless encampment under Interstate 35 in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 2, 2017. His mother, Claudette, alternates his narrative with her own, walking through a clear-eyed self-appraisal as a teenage mom struggling to support her son, who started life with many adverse childhood experiences and her own failures throughout his life. Aaron's life illustrates the consequences of that abuse as it reverberated through the rest of his life. When he landed on the streets at fifteen years old after numerous ineffective interventions, Claudette became an occupational therapist, and later a college professor, seeking to better enable youth, families, and people living with mental illness in her community. She began to understand where systems had failed them, and the search led her to communities of family advocates and other professionals who were developing best practices in mental health. Claudette weaves Aaron's first-person accounts of his struggles together with her own. No Saints Here presents their experiences as a cautionary tale while offering better alternatives based on Claudette's years as a scholar and therapist. Relationship Between Post Traumatic Stress and Physical Fitness and the Impact of Army Fitness Policy on Post Traumatic Stress Prevention
Increases in operation tempo since September 11, 2001 have resulted in elevated rates of post traumatic stress (PTS) and reduced levels of physical fitness across the U.S. Army. This thesis sought to identify a relationship between the elevated PTS and decreased physical fitness as well as determine methods to invert both levels experienced by deployed Soldiers. Soldiers experience PTS symptoms when stress levels are not adequately managed resulting in anxiety. Physical training and exercise provide the parasympathetic response needed following stressful situations and increase Soldier resiliency through physical and mental hardiness. Soldiers located at company and battalion level operating bases are often denied the facilities, time, and training necessary to sustain the physical fitness levels developed in the garrison environment. This situation is compounded by U.S. Army policies that reduce the emphasis on physical training during and after deployments. These decisions by senior U.S. Army leadership have served to, directly or indirectly, reduce the potential for physical training and lowered fitness levels of deployed Soldiers.
