In the 18th century, the demand for male midwives increased as the use of obstetrical forceps was popularised. Many believed that having the device and a male-midwife improved the chances of a successful delivery, and they were both used increasingly in wealthier families.Elizabeth felt that male midwives used forceps too eagerly to expedite the delivery, and that this increased the risk of injury to infant and mother alike. A Treatise on the Art of Midwifery was written in part to explain the dangers of obstetric forceps and to advocate for the use of experienced midwives, as their knowledge and patience would result in fewer infant injuries and a lower mortality rate.Most importantly, Elizabeth encourages expecting parents to gather information and make the decision that they feel is the best fit for their unborn child. The Nell Dialogues
Nell M. came to her therapist with an unusual problem. She was disappointed that her metastatic breast cancer was not progressing as predicted. She had hoped breast cancer would lead to death, preventing her from witnessing her spouse's mental deterioration from Alzheimer's disease. This is how Nell's story began. As Nell became increasingly aware of her death on the near horizon, the therapy sessions with the author were recorded and transcribed. Helicobacter Pylori in Human Diseases
Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative microaerophilic bacterium that is found in the stomach. It is associated with gastric ulcers, chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcers and stomach cancer. Almost 85% of the people infected by H. pylori do not experience symptoms and complications. Acute cases of infection may present themselves as an acute gastritis with nausea or abdominal pain. These symptoms may progress into chronic gastritis, nonulcer dyspepsia, nausea, stomach pains, bloating, belching and black stool. Infection with H. pylori is also associated with colorectal cancer and colorectal polyps. The testing for H. pylori may be done using both invasive and non-invasive methods. Stool antigen tests, blood antibody tests, carbon urea breath tests and endoscopic biopsy are the methods for detecting infections with H. pylori.
