Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Tim,Hulsen  著
Ingram 出版
2024/05/14 出版

Artificial intelligence (AI), which is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, is having a growing impact on healthcare. Via AI, researchers can provide new approaches to merge, analyze, and process complex "big data" and gain more actionable insights, understanding, and knowledge at an individual and population level. Medical staff can be helped by AI-assisted clinical decision support (CDS), i.e., machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models that analyze large medical datasets. They do this by summarizing radiology and pathology reports by means of natural language processing (NLP), automating repetitive but time-consuming tasks, and much more. Patients can talk to chatbots who have access to all medical knowledge in the world, including the patient's medical history, and provide personalized advice. This Special Issue intends to show some examples of how AI impacts healthcare, with some discussion on potential future developments as well as challenges. Since this Special Issue contains papers from 2023 and 2024, the era of Generative AI (GenAI), naturally there are papers related to ChatGPT and chatbots. There are also papers on prediction modeling in primary care, polychronic conditions, and heart disease. Other papers focus on the classification of colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Finally, this Special Issue also includes papers on orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, anxiety treatment, and explainable AI (XAI).

Trace Metals and Infectious Diseases

Mit Press 出版
2024/04/29 出版

Experts explore the influence of trace metals on the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Many parts of the world in which common infectious diseases are endemic also have the highest prevalence of trace metal deficiencies or rising rates of trace metal pollution. Infectious diseases can increase human susceptibility to adverse effects of metal exposure (at suboptimal or toxic levels), and metal excess or deficiency can increase the incidence or severity of infectious diseases. The co-clustering of major infectious diseases with trace metal deficiency or toxicity has created a complex web of interactions with serious but poorly understood health repercussions, yet has been largely overlooked in animal and human studies. This book focuses on the distribution, trafficking, fate, and effects of trace metals in biological systems. Its goal is to enhance our understanding of the relationships between homeostatic mechanisms of trace metals and the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. Drawing on expertise from a range of fields, the book offers a comprehensive review of current knowledge on vertebrate metal-withholding mechanisms and the strategies employed by different microbes to avoid starvation (or poisoning). Chapters summarize current, state-of-the-art techniques for investigating pathogen-metal interactions and highlight open question to guide future research. The book makes clear that improving knowledge in this area will be instrumental to the development of novel therapeutic measures against infectious diseases. ContributorsM. Health Insurance Across Worldwide Health Systems

Intechopen 出版
2024/04/17 出版

Health insurance is the mechanism used to respond to uncertainty and risk aversion to illness. Health insurance, whether private, public, or mixed, serves as the main structural foundation for health systems across countries. Its objectives are to minimize the financial burden of medical expenses on people and to enhance population health. Globally, there is a great diversity of health systems and even greater variation among them. There are substantial differences in health systems and health insurance between low- and middle-income nations. The primary explanation for this could be the disparities in the resources available to fund the health system. High-income countries have the financing ability to fund the provision of health care, whereas low- and medium-income countries have a harder time funding health care. Another challenge health systems face nowadays is the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. To create resilient and sustainable health systems that guarantee healthy lives and foster well-being for people of all ages, many countries are redesigning their healthcare systems by improving financing, access, and coverage. This book discusses these issues in different health systems around the world, in low-, middle-, and high-income countries.

The Digestive System in the Era of COVID-19

Ingram 出版
2024/04/03 出版

In the last few years, the scientific world has been forced to find ways to manage the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and its many effects. Even though COVID-19 was first considered a respiratory disease, it is now identified as a systematic disease. It is common for SARS-CoV-2 to also infect the digestive system. This type of infection in patients with COVID-19 has a wide symptom range. The aim of this reprint is to evaluate and discuss the optimal management of emergency surgeries in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and co-infections. Furthermore, this reprint refers to rare conditions of the digestive system and emphasizes the importance of considering these entities in the differential diagnosis. Awareness of diagnostic imaging hallmarks is crucial to optimize the management of these patients. In this reprint, we discuss the risk of new-onset liver injuries due to COVID-19 in preexisting hepatic conditions, their prognosis, severity and outcome, as well as the immunosuppressant treatments administered for COVID-19 and the possibility of reactivation of the hepatic virus. Moreover, we refer to the drugs used during therapy of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, which have adverse side-effects of drug-induced liver injury-DILI. Finally, this reprint punctuates the importance of vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 in chronic digestive diseases.

Shifting the Therapeutic Paradigm for Children with Neuromotor Disabilities to Maximizing Development

Ingram 出版
2024/04/03 出版

The United Nations Convention on the Rights to Children states that "Every child with a disability should enjoy the best possible life in society. Governments should remove all obstacles for children with disabilities to become independent and to participate actively in the community." This Special Issue sought to address this call by challenging historical legacy that surround pediatric rehabilitation. It focused on neuromotor disabilities and was a collection of publications from authors who use science to seek understanding about neuromotor disabilities with a hope of improving the lives of all children with such diagnoses that stem from etiologies such as cerebral palsy, stroke, hypoxic injuries, and traumatic brain injuries. This Special Issue included 13 original research articles investigating parental information, strengthening surgical outcomes, the development of unimanual and bimanual abilities, factors influencing NICU services, the achievement of goals, and novel therapeutic frameworks to guide the therapeutic process. It also included two perspective pieces regarding the importance of play in early childhood development and the importance of life-long fitness for individuals with disabilities.

Eating Disorders and Addictive Behaviors

Ingram 出版
2024/03/18 出版

Eating disorders (EDs) are psychological conditions that have a significant impact on physical health (e.g., gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiovascular) and psychological well-being (e.g., relationships with others, personal growth, and autonomy). The most common eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. These three conditions cause clinical impairment in different areas of functioning and share an excessive focus on weight and body image, leading to dangerous eating styles that affect the body's ability to obtain adequate nutrition. Behavioral addictions (BAs) are non-substance-related addictions characterized by an individual's incapacity to resist impulses toward rewarding stimuli despite the adverse consequences. Aside from gambling and gaming disorders (the two most frequent conditions within the spectrum of BAs), other maladaptive and uncontrolled behaviors include compulsive sexual behaviors, compulsive buying, and kleptomania. The etiology of EDs and BAs comprises a complex network of biological, psychological, and contextual social factors. The onset of these conditions is usually during school age and adolescence; the progression of these disorders occurs throughout the lifespan. Diverse phenotypes have been identified according to ED and BA subtypes, and it has been observed that the physio-pathological mechanisms underlying each behavioral profile can play a role in the treatment outcomes.

Industrial Farm Animal Production, the Environment, and Public Health

2024/03/13 出版

Essential essays on the environmental impacts of factory farms on public health. The rapid--and relatively recent--concentration of food animal production into factory farms makes meat plentiful and cheap, but this type of agriculture comes at a great cost to human health and the environment. In Industrial Farm Animal Production, the Environment, and Public Health, editors James Merchant and Robert Martin bring together public health experts to explore the most critical topics related to industrial farm animal production. The environmental impacts of these concentrated animal-feeding operations endanger the health of farm and meatpacking workers, neighbors, and surrounding communities. Factory farms create public health hazards such as antibiotic-resistant bacteria due to the overuse of antibiotics in livestock, as well as water polluted with nitrates, microbes, and other harmful chemicals. Despite the clear need for greater worker protection and oversight to mitigate the environmental harms of these practices, factory farms are notoriously difficult to regulate. Industrial animal operations are located predominantly in rural areas, often next to poor communities and communities of color. Food companies have driven independent producers nearly to extinction, sapped the economic vitality of rural communities, and amassed sweeping political influence at both the state and national levels to effectively prevent mitigation efforts.Essays in this volume cover pertinent topics such as the history, structure, and trends in the factory farming industry; water and air pollution; infectious disease health effects; community and social impacts; environmental justice and sustainable agriculture; and the impacts of COVID-19 among meatpacking workers.

A Test of Morals

L Allen,Furr  著
Ingram 出版
2024/03/05 出版

While transplanting human heads is not a new concept, the idea has largely been relegated to religious lore or as a plot device in science fiction. But now, a surgical plan to perform the complex procedure exists, and though most physicians question head transplantation's medical veracity, bioethicists have challenged the surgery on moral grounds. A Test of Morals compiles and examines the ethical questions that dog those who advocate for conducting this most radical of medical proposals in order to determine if society should move forward and allow head transplantation to occur. Current bioethical principles stand in opposition to head transplantation, causing a conflict of values rarely seen in medicine.

Behavioral and Mental Health Problems in Children

Ingram 出版
2024/03/04 出版

Today's world is fraught with crisis and uncertainty. This creates a significant obstacle in child rearing and development. Children, inherently a vulnerable demographic, are at the epicenter of these crises. Approaches to address these problems need to be based on high-quality scientific research, to understand the root causes and determine effective approaches to reduce behavioral and mental health problems in children (BMPC). This is a special research reprint focusing on BMPC. It collected 14 high-quality papers from authors distributed across many countries, including the United States, France, China, Japan, Israel, and Thailand. This reprint included two main sections. The first section aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the social and mental mechanisms leading to BMPC. The second section aimed to develop behavioral and mental health promotion strategies and policies for children, as well as to provide some considerations in the design and implementation of effective intervention programs. We believe that this reprint is of great significance for the development and progress of research and practice in the area of children's behavior and mental health. This reprint is suitable as a reference book for researchers, and also has significance for guiding practical workers in this field. In the end, we noted that, in some papers, it was necessary to further improve them, to obtain in-depth and comprehensive overviews and to expand on the design and implementation of effective intervention programs.

Socio-Economic Burden of Disease

Ingram 出版
2024/03/04 出版

In 2020, the world was shaken by a very unexpected development, an unseen virus which could kill millions and spread without control. To reduce the impact of the pandemic and before the vaccine was created, lockdown and other safety measures were implemented. In this context, the socio-economic burden of the disease was, in our opinion, a major issue because we always considered that COVID-19 would have a hard impact on human beings and that that impact would be the most prominent effect of the pandemic. In consequence, when designing this Special Issue, we hoped to receive papers with "tales from the field" that would describe the mentioned socio-economic burden. Therefore, it was deeply rewarding to receive so many contributions of very good quality that ended up composing the Special Issue that is reprinted here.We sincerely thank all the authors and reviewers for the work they produced and we congratulate them for their success. We believe that this reprint of the Special Issue contributes to the understanding of the major consequences of COVID-19 in society. Crucially, the reprint includes papers on global perspectives but also national cases and also sector-specific cases. Finally, we hope the legacy of this volume will be long-lasting and that the papers it contains will be quoted and cited for many years to come.

COVID-19 in Dentistry and Dental Education

Ingram 出版
2024/02/29 出版

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has affected life throughout the world, and dentistry is no exception. Dentistry has already been shown to be a hazardous occupation due to the numerous infectious and health risks associated with it. Over the past year and a half, this risk has only grown because of the highly transmissible nature of the Coronavirus. Dentistry, being a profession where the operator and the assistants are in close contact with the patients, has seen numerous changes. Not only this, but even dental education has been impacted as most of the teaching over the pandemic period has been conducted online. Furthermore, dental education has been highly impacted as a major part of it involves hands-on training. Due to this, there are several social, financial, and health-related repercussions that must be analyzed and understood. This Special Issue invited manuscripts, both research and review, that analyze the SARS-CoV-2 situation with regard to dentistry and dental education.

Anxiety Culture

Ingram 出版
2024/02/21 出版

A collection of timely essays on the rising wave of anxiety in culture. The twenty-first century is characterized by uncertainty: from catastrophic climate change to the accelerating pace of technological change, societies around the world are gripped by anxiety about the future. In Anxiety Culture, editors John Allegrante, Ulrich Hoinkes, Michael Schapira, and Karen Struve bring together a distinguished group of international scholars to examine the forces that increase anxiety as a phenomenon beyond solely individual experiences of clinical anxiety to pervade global culture. These trenchant essays examine our culture of anxiety across diverse avenues of society. Covering fears related to climate change, populist and extremist movements around the world, gun violence, artificial intelligence, and more, contributors also examine how anxiety is expressed in literature and the media and how a culture of anxiety affects policymaking. Chapters are organized into five sections: disciplinary perspectives on anxiety, climate change and the environment, population health and social well-being, migration, and technology. There's room for hope, however. Contributors provide pragmatic recommendations for coping with anxiety culture in public education, governments, and NGOs. Anxiety Culture is a unique attempt to define this condition and an indispensable resource for those seeking stability in an unstable age, providing a set of conceptual and practical narratives for navigating both existing and emergent planetary challenges.Contributors: Kristina Allgoewer, Bryndis Asgeirsdottir, John Baldacchino, Christine Blaettler, Michel Bourban, Dominic Boyer, Eva J. One Health and the Politics of Covid-19

Laura H,Kahn  著
Ingram 出版
2024/02/21 出版

Unpacks the mysteries of COVID-19's origins to impart important lessons for future outbreaks.Unpacking the mysteries of COVID-19's origins to impart important lessons for future outbreaks. In this timely book, leading public health expert Laura H. Kahn uses the comprehensive One Health approach to investigate the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept of "One Health" recognizes the interconnected links among the health of humans, animals, plants, and the environment. By comparing the history, science, and clinical presentations of three different coronaviruses--SARS-CoV-1, MERS, and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)--Kahn uncovers insights with important repercussions for how to prepare for and avoid future pandemics. The One Health approach is a useful framework for examining the outbreak of COVID-19. Understanding the origins of this zoonotic disease requires examining the environmental and molecular biological factors that allowed the virus to spread to humans. Kahn investigates the many ways in which the wild animal trade, wet markets, and the camel industry contributed to the spread of earlier coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV-1 and MERS. The book also explores the biosafety, biosecurity, and bioethics implications of gain-of-function research on pandemic potential pathogens. This important book is a must-read to understand the history, science, and geopolitics of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Asymptomatic

Ingram 出版
2024/02/21 出版

The riveting account of how asymptomatic transmission drove COVID-19's global spread and catalyzed interventions to control it.Why was COVID-19 so difficult to contain and so devastating to people and economies worldwide? In Asymptomatic, author Joshua S. Weitz explains how silent transmission enabled COVID-19's massive and tragic global impact. Weaving the science of viral infections together with an insider's look at response efforts, Weitz guides readers through the shockwaves of successive epidemic waves as public health officials and academic research teams confronted the rise and risk of what was then a burgeoning global pandemic. The discovery of asymptomatic spread also fueled competing narratives: either COVID-19 was about to dissipate as quickly as it had emerged or completely disrupt life as we knew it. Weitz, a physicist-turned-biologist who directs a quantitative viral dynamics research group and has been immersed in COVID-19 response efforts, explains both why and how scientists tried to wade through competing narratives and warn the public of COVID-19's profound risk. As explored through a careful analysis of local outbreaks, accessible descriptions of virus dynamics, and the use of predictive models to guide response efforts, Asymptomatic provides readers a unique look into the secret ingredient that allowed COVID-19 to spread across borders and the high-impact interventions needed to fight it and future pandemics.

The COVID-19 Crisis

Ingram 出版
2024/02/13 出版

Given the far-reaching effects that the pandemic has had on both individuals and society at large, this book was written to be approachable for academics, students, and laypersons alike. To further amplify this point, readers will find that an eclectic mix of both (largely online-based) news articles and analyses, along with select academic papers and concepts are featured in this concise book; the inclusion of select news reports from the first two years of the pandemic helps to document how the pandemic was publicly presented-which, given the relatively ephemeral nature of the Internet, it can be especially helpful to document such sources. Some of the critical social and psychological issues regarding key developments and events (largely, though not exclusively, focused on America) and predominantly related to the first two years of the pandemic include both mental health and personal and interpersonal problems, as well as many social/societal, economic, and political consequences. Drawing from a host of varied and interdisciplinary sources, this book would be a helpful resource for (current and future) academics, scholars, clinicians, students, and anyone seeking a critical yet concise overview and analysis of some of the most pressing psychological/social scientific themes and issues pertaining to the pandemic.

Dying of Whiteness

Basic Books 出版
2024/01/21 出版

A physician's "provocative" (Boston Globe) and "timely" (Ibram X. Kendi, New York Times Book Review) account of how right-wing backlash policies have deadly consequences -- even for the white voters they promise to help In election after election, conservative white Americans have embraced politicians who pledge to make their lives great again. But as Dying of Whiteness shows, right-wing policies put these voters' very health at risk--and in the end, threaten everyone's well-being. Physician and sociologist Jonathan M. Metzl travels across America's heartland seeking to better understand the politics of racial resentment and its impact on public health. Interviewing a range of Americans, he uncovers how racial anxieties led to the repeal of gun control laws in Missouri, fueled massive cuts to schools and social services in Kansas, and stymied healthcare reform across the country. Although such measures promised to restore greatness to white America, Metzl's systematic analysis of health data reveals they did just the opposite: these policies made life sicker, harder, and shorter in the very populations they purported to aid. Thus, white gun suicides soared, life expectancies fell, and school dropout rates rose.   Now with a new foreword on the backlash to the American pandemic response, Dying of Whiteness demonstrates how much white America would benefit by emphasizing cooperation, rather than chasing false promises of supremacy.  Winner of the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award

History of Stroke

Ingram 出版
2024/01/10 出版

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. It has become the first disease leading to neurologic referrals to hospital and, while recognized in medicine since antiquity, stroke did not acquire a proper place within neurology until the second part of the 20th century. The main reason for this is that, because it deals with blood vessels and circulation, neurologists themselves did not want to include stroke as a primary disorder of the nervous system. However, this is one of the many reasons the historical development of stroke and cerebrovascular disease is of unique interest; it touches not only on neurology but also on internal medicine, angiology, cardiology, rehabilitation, and psychiatry within the frame of secondary behavioral and personality changes after stroke. For the same reasons, the study of the developments in the field of stroke over time is an excellent mirror of historical developments in medicine in general, encompassing many different domains. It is, thus, rather paradoxical that the last book on the history of stroke was published over thirty years ago (Fields and Lemak's History of Stroke in 1989). Along with the many new developments in stroke diagnosis, acute management and prevention, a new look at the evolution of stroke concepts over time has become necessary, and this is what the present volume is attempting to accomplish. Since stroke has developed into several different smaller fields, we have organized the book with four editors from different fields who have chosen authors with specific expertise in the corresponding overviewed issues. Our principle goal is to underline how and to follow the paths of these developments over the years. History is not a minor part of medical knowledge. Indeed, history defines what we are and think today and how we will envision and plan the future. This fresh look at history of stroke may also have a significant impact on future advances and research in cerebrovascular disease and stroke.

Intimate Partner Violence

Ingram 出版
2023/12/15 出版

Violence between couples is one of the most common forms of abuse. The consequences that this phenomenon has on the victims, but also on the aggressors, are serious enough to justify the multiple investigations focused on the topic. In the literature, a strong heterogeneity of variables has been linked to this phenomenon (previous history of abuse, sexism, normalization of violence, culture, etc.) in different ways. In the same way, considering violence within the LGTBI+ community, the reviewed literature concludes that intimate partner violence does not entail forms of abuse specifically linked to these couples, since aggressions are manifested in hetero- and homosexual couples regardless of their sexual orientation. This heterogeneity of variables linked with the phenomenon can be assumed to have a positive impact on the prevention of abuse; however, to date, the actions taken have not been sufficient. There is thus a need to adopt a broader approach that includes not only all the social agents involved but also how the world and society are constantly evolving, changing how violence and abuse are perpetrated and interpreted. In view of the above, this reprint presents ten valuable investigations carried out by researchers of international prestige focused on different contexts, social agents, and the way victims are affected by the variables linked to the phenomenon, indicating how they interact and modify the way teens see romantic relationships and violence.

A Global Impact

Ingram 出版
2023/12/08 出版

"The leprosy epidemic is slowly but surely fading away," says WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The number of leprosy patients in the world once numbered in the millions, but new cases have declined to around 200,000 a year, thanks to the efforts of governments, the WHO, NGOs and organizations of persons affected by leprosy. Amid this changing landscape, Yohei Sasakawa has led various initiatives as the World Health Organization's Goodwill Ambassador for Leprosy Elimination, and as Chairman of The Nippon Foundation. Marking the twentieth anniversary of Mr Sasakawa's appointment as a leprosy elimination ambassador, this book recalls the initiatives he has promoted and led, and analyses their value and effectiveness, with a view to identifying lessons to be learned. The volume's expert contributors focus on five themes promoted and driven forward by Mr Sasakawa: Eliminating Leprosy as a Public Health Problem; Leprosy as a Human Rights Issue; the Establishment of the Rights of Primary Stakeholders; Expanding the Range of Awareness-Raising Activities and Developing New Partners; and Leprosy Control in the Post-Elimination Era. In synthesizing and assessing these efforts, A Global Impact offers an important contribution to the future elaboration of measures against leprosy, and infectious diseases generally.

A groundbreaking look at the complex relationship between the built environment and population health in small-town America. The links between urban settings and health issues are well established, but the built environments of smaller cities and towns also play a crucial role in population well-being. In this book, Mahbub Rashid--who employs innovative spatial and social network analysis techniques to examine the impact of built form and space on people's behavior, psychology, society, and culture--uses extensive spatial, demographic, and health data to study the crucial role of the built environment in small Kansas cities. The first book of its kind, Built Environment and Population Health in Small-Town America sheds light on the critical factors shaping the well-being of these communities and provides valuable insights for building healthier futures.

Nursing and COVID-19 Ⅱ

Richard,Gray  著
Ingram 出版
2023/11/17 出版

Nurses represent the highest number of healthcare workers globally and have played a critical role in the COVID-19 pandemic. This reprint highlights the issues and challenges faced by nurses practicing in hospital and community settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The manuscripts herein focus on nurses in various areas of practice, including nurse managers, highlighting the impact, experience, and reality of providing care during the crisis. Interventions and strategies to support practice environments and the mental health and wellbeing of the nursing workforce were identified. Evidence from these manuscripts shed light on how nurse leaders can provide relevant, coordinated, and consistent organizational and leadership support to better establish a safe and healthy work environment that protects and fosters the mental health and wellbeing of all nursing personnel. The pandemic exacerbated the already demanding quality of work environments for nurses, as well as their mental health and wellbeing, thereby inducing a global nursing shortage; therefore, improving these factors, which ultimately influence nurse retention, is critical. We trust that sharing the lived experiences of nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic can enable us to leverage their expertise in meeting the complex care needs of patients, including COVID-19 patients, while improving the care needed by nurses in their working environments, alongside preparing for future pandemic waves.
