The Shrinking Brain
Since 1950 there has been a steady increase in mental ill-health across the population. At the same time, there has been a similar steady decline in IQ. There is strong evidence of 'dumbing down' right across society. If this is allowed to continue it will be the greatest threat to the sustainability of the human race, even greater than the more visible threat of climate change. The Global Mental Health Crisis is a direct result of the fact that, over time, the actual size of our brains is getting smaller. This is a historical fact but is entirely reversible with better brain nutrition. This has now reached crisis proportions. In 2023, The European Brain Council recognised that "Brain Health conditions have become a global health emergency". Back in 1972, Graham Rose wrote in the Sunday Times "Unless action is taken to care for the nutrition of the brain 'We will become a race of morons!' Authors Michael A Crawford and David E Marsh have both devoted their lives to this vital area of research. This book is their legacy. In painstaking detail, they put the case of how to reverse the Global Mental Health Crisis. With greater awareness of the problem, its cause and the solution required to make a change, their message could not be clearer. By reading this book you will not be able to say, "We didn't realise".This book may contain complex research and the result of detailed research, but the message is simple. And so is the action we all need to take.We also explain the role of the environment in the evolution of the brain, leading to early Homo sapiens with a brain capacity of over 1,600cc, and explain why it is now only 1,366 cc and mental ill-health is escalating. The concepts in this book have been fifty-one years in the making. They can't wait any longer. There is no more time. Presented with these incontrovertible facts, it does not need a rocket scientist to work out what will happen if these dumbing-down trends continue! Fortunately, solutions are available which will lead to brighter and healthier children of the future.

Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease is a condition that can cause pain in the lower back and legs. It occurs when normal changes that take place in the discs of your spine cause pain. The discs are cushions between the vertebrae, and they help to absorb shock and keep the spine flexible. With age, the discs begin to degenerate or break down. This can lead to several problems, including pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility. Degenerative disc disease is a common condition, and it is most often seen in middle-aged and older adults. Treatment typically involves analgesics or anti-inflammatory medications. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. While there is no cure for degenerative disc disease, there are several things that you can do to manage the pain and other symptoms. One of the most important things that you can do is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. The Eye and I
This book is a story book about the eye. After some 60 years in eye research and clinical work in ophthalmology there have been many instances, where I remember patients and their problems, a book I read or a place that I traveled. This book has 30 chapters and the only thing they have in common, other than all having the same writer is that all have something to do with the eye or eye associated structures such as the eye muscles.None of the chapters are meant to be clinical reports; all are stories and I have tried to keep the text understandable. Some chapters have pen drawings, but for a number I could not think of appropriate illustrations and they consist of just text. All are relatively short, easily read in an evening. Some feature bugs, blister beetles, fleas and lice or other microorganisms that might affect the eye or the tissues around it. Other chapters play away from the U.S., such as Saudi-Arabia, Grenada and Komodo Island.

Vaccines and CMV Reactivation
The mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines may be inducing a short-lived temporary immunosuppression allowing cytomegalovirus (CMV) to become reactivated in some people in very rare cases. This reactivation of the cytomegalovirus can in rare circumstances cause myocarditis and Guillain-Barr矇 syndrome and a host of other ailments. The cytomegalovirus is highly ubiquitous in nature and common in people of all ages and is the cause of chickenpox and mononucleosis in adolescents. After infection, CMV remains dormant in the body of most humans throughout their lives, but can become reactivated during immune suppression. A decreasing CMV susceptibility with men older than 45 may be the reason why rare cases of myocarditis is happening in younger people who have taken the mRNA vaccine. CMV susceptibility increases between the ages of 16-45. Treatments, medications, and even vaccines can temporarily suppress the immune system and cause CMV reactivation. This is however very rare, but should be looked into as a possible cause of rare instances of myocarditis and Guillain-Barr矇 in those who have taken the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.

Toll-Like Receptors in Vector-borne Diseases
The immune system is highly complex, it senses foreign invaders, thus protecting the body. The adaptive arm of the immune system confers long-term protection, whereas the innate immune system confers immediate protection. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are important mediators of inflammatory pathways in the gut which play a major role in mediating the immune responses towards a wide variety of pathogen-derived ligands and link adaptive immunity with the innate immunity. This book covers the role of TLRs in several vector-borne Diseases. Starting with an introduction to these diseases, the book explains the different types of receptors involved in these diseases. The diseases are then covered in separate chapters, including: malaria, lymphatic filariasis, visceral leishmaniasis, dengue fever, chikungunya, West Nile fever, and Japanese encephalitis. Using non-technical language, the book explores simple methods such as the paired t-test and summary statistics as well as more sophisticated regression-based methods, including mixed model analysis. The emphasis of the discussion lies in the interpretation of the results of these different methods, covering data analysis with continuous, dichotomous, categorical and other outcome variables. Datasets used throughout the book are provided, enabling readers to re-analyse the examples as they make their way through chapters and improve their understanding of the material. Finally, an extensive and practical overview of, and comparison between, different software packages is provided. Readers will be able to use this book as a practical manual in their everyday work without needing a strong background in statistics.

Fundamentals and Possibilities in Anti-Tuberculosis Vaccination
Since the end of World War II, BCG has almost exclusively held the stage in discussions of the problem of protective vaccination against tuberculosis. Yet inoculation with BCG is not the only method by means of which an immunity can be induced even in tuberculosis. It is also true that opinions by no means agree as to the value of BCG vaccination; particularly in the field of veterinary medicine an almost entirely unfavourable evaluation of the procedure has recently prevailed. As a result BCG vaccination is no longer accepted to such an emphatic degree today. Investigations with the objective of improving or replacing the method are claiming greater attention, especially in Germany. In the monograph the authors present a review of current problems in the field of vaccination in tuberculosis, and correlate the extensive experimental and clinical material including the work published in recent years. At a time when new developments seem to be making headway, this account will provide a useful summary of information and a basis for further work.
Heritage
Convinced that there is a need for a book in paediatrics that is neither a classical text nor a handbook, but a guide in the management of paediatric problems, the authors have compiled this book for the use of general practitioners, interns, and students. In it they present an orderly investigation of situations which may confront the doctor, stressing the urgency of early diagnosis for which specific treatment is available. Major problems are discussed, and although no attempt has been made to describe all neonatal disease, some of the rarer entities are included, since early recognition is important for successful management. The book beings with "Care of the Full-Term Baby," and then discusses the major problems of new-borns. A chapter on "Congenital Abnormalities" reviews the main disabilities that can be prevented or treated during the first month of life. Some chapters include definitions of terminology; some present physiological, aetiological, and pathological considerations; but all are organized so that the practical aspects of management are readily apparent. There are sections dealing with procedures and with dosages of drugs, including antibiotics. The readable, practical nature of the text, and the chronological organization of the investigative procedures will make this book useful to the general practitioners who are responsible for such a large percentage of paediatric care. It will be helpful, too, to the medical student and to paediatricians, who will find it a readily available source of initial reference for the major neonatal problems.
