The Action of Bioactive Compounds on Human Health or Disease

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/06/02 出版

Bioactive compounds are being studied to better understand their effects on health and disease. These compounds are found in several foods, such as beverages (wine, cedar, and juices), vegetable oils, spices (curcuma, pepper, etc.), teas, and infusions. In in vitro and in vivo studies, some of these compounds have already shown several potentially beneficial effects on human health and in the prevention of disease. Plant bioactive compounds are of great interest in these areas due to the range of compound varieties and actions, such as thermogenesis, inflammation, metabolism, and endocrine factors. More research is needed to explore their use in improving physical performance; the aging process; and preventing or helping treat diseases such as obesity, CVD, diabetes mellitus tumors, and inflammatory processes in general.

Current Challenges and Advances in Skin Repair and Regeneration

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/06/02 出版

We have organized this Special Issue to discuss the appropriate possibilities for skin reconstruction and regeneration. Luze et al. explained how antiseptic-loaded BNC represents a promising and effective approach for the treatment of biofilms. Korzeniowski et al. demonstrated how a bromelain-based enzymatic method offers a good, safe debridement option to improve the life quality of children with severe burns. Martinovic et al. wrote a paper titled "Objective Skin Quality Assessment after Reconstructive Procedures for Facial Skin Defects". An interesting technique was introduced by Woo Yoo et al.-a modified mini-keystone flap technique for covering tiny volar pulp defects of the fingertip, with few complications and favorable outcomes. Russo et al. conducted a comparative study between Connettivina Bio Plus and Fitostimoline Plus. They showed that both were secure and effective for treating acute superficial skin lesions. Hwan Kim et al. published "A Prospective Randomized Trial Comparing Paste-Type Acellular Dermal Matrix to Standard Care for the Treatment of Chronic Wounds". Korzeniowski et al. enriched the Special Issue with a systematic review titled "The Role of the Immune System in Pediatric Burns". Finally we presented the paper "Collection of Key Surgical Techniques for the Reconstruction of Midface Skin Defects" for the midface's significant role in defining important facial traits. Finally, I would like to express my sincere respect to all authors for submitting excellent papers, and to reviewers for taking the time to review them.

The Medicine Woman

Aeon Books 出版
2025/06/02 出版

A beautiful and healing synthesis of memoir and practical herbal knowledge. This book is a poignant collection of true tales and anecdotes from the career of fourth-generation herbalist Linda Bates, who dedicated her life to a path of plants and healing. Linda had a profound love and an unrivalled knowledge of the power of plant medicine. The Medicine Woman shares her herbal wisdom, remedies, and stories from over forty years of clinical practice in a uniquely warm and witty prose, and will be an essential companion for anyone treading the green path. Starting with inspiring stories of her life in herbalism and healing, Linda outlines some of the almost miraculous cures she achieved with plant medicine, ranging from working with intensive care patients to brain disease. The Medicine Woman also explores Linda's spiritual journey and how discovering one's true vocation is a key to becoming a healer. From Findhorn in Scotland, to Adelaide, Australia her story is fascinating and inspiring, offering poignant and practical insight to both herbalists and lay-people alike. In the final section, Linda explains the system of herbal medicine she was taught, centred around the use of drop doses of several plant tinctures and flower essences, and also includes several detailed case studies. The Medicine Woman is an inspiring work which stresses the importance of community centred healing practices in the herbal world, and is an invitation to consider more deeply our relationships with both humans and plants in daily life.

Tell Me Where It Hurts

2025/06/02 出版

Leading pain expert Dr. Rachel Zoffness bridges the gap between medicine and psychology to get to the heart of understanding--and treating--pain--it's The Body Keeps the Score for chronic pain. Every one of us will experience pain, be it back pain, the pain of childbirth, or living in an aging body. Not a single one of us will escape. But what if everything you thought you knew about pain was ... wrong? We've been told that pain is purely physical, something to do just with bones and body parts. The truth is that pain is constructed by the brain--influenced not just by injuries, but also by emotions, expectations, and environment. This means you have infinitely more control over pain than you ever imagined: because if the brain can change, pain can change. Rooted in cutting-edge neuroscience and rich patient stories, Dr. Rachel Zoffness completely upends the myths we've been sold--finally reconnecting physical and emotional pain, and providing a roadmap for healing. The fact is that chronic pain is treatable. But to do that, we must target the whole person--not just a body part. A groundbreaking, revolutionary book that finally offers access to the world's most powerful painkiller: YOU. "This book is a must read for anyone struggling with chronic pain. Filled with moving stories and the latest science, Zoffness explains how pain works and why so many treatments fall short. Her message is ultimately a hopeful one: By changing our brains we can lessen our pain. I highly recommend." ―Anna Lembke, MD, Professor and Medical Director, Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic, Stanford University, New York Times bestselling author of Dopamine Nation "In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Zoffness dismantles outdated myths about pain and brilliantly reveals new ways to overcome it. Filled with the latest science, this is a must read for both doctors and patients, and frankly anyone grappling with chronic pain." ―William W. Li, MD, New York Times bestselling author of Eat To Beat Disease, former faculty at Harvard Medical School
