Touch Is Really Strange
Why can't we tickle ourselves? How can slow touch convey more powerful emotions than fast touch? How does touch shape our perception of the world? The latest addition to the Really Strange series, this science-based graphic comic addresses these questions and more, revealing the complexity of touch and exploring its power and limits. Used positively, touch can change pain and trauma, communicate compassion and love and generate social bonding. Get it wrong and it can be abusive and terrifying. Touch helps us feel real. Knowledge comes through our body as we engage with space and with others. Before we have language, our concepts are formed as we meet a world full of edges and textures. Touch is Really Strange celebrates the power of inward touch (interoception) and looks at how we can use skilful contact to promote feelings of joy, connection and vitality.

Cannabis Laboratory Fundamentals
The legislative requirement for cannabis to undergo laboratory testing has followed legalization of medical and recreational use in every U.S. state to date. Cannabis safety testing is a new investment opportunity within the emerging cannabis market that is separate from cultivation, processing, and distribution, allowing individuals and organizations who may have been reluctant to enter previously a new entry route to the cannabis space. However, many of the costs, timelines, operational requirements, and compliance issues are overlooked by people who have not been exposed to regulated laboratory testing. Cannabis Laboratory Fundamentals provides an in-depth review of the key issues that impact cannabis testing laboratories and provides recommendations and solutions to avoid common - but expensive - mistakes. The text goes beyond methodology to include sections on economics, regulation, and operational challenges, making it useful for both new and experienced cannabislaboratory operators, as well as all those who want to understand the opportunities and risks of this industry.
Just Say Know
The topic of drugs is almost unrivalled when it comes to generating controversy. It's becoming increasingly difficult to sort fact from fiction, to talk to our children, and understand why drugs exist in society the way they do today.Just Say Know covers everything you need to know about drugs, including the checkered history of many drugs, why we choose to ban some yet promote others, and the challenges that society faces if we want to have a more pragmatic approach in reducing harm. Part one of Just Say Know looks at all of the areas we have gone wrong, where we continue to go wrong, and why. Part two will cover what we can do as a society to dig ourselves out of this hole. This book provides parents with what they need to tell their children, teachers and lecturers with what they need to tell their students, and what society needs to tell themselves and who they elect.
A Mother’s Garden of Galactagogues
Around the world, women in traditional societies know exactly which plants and foods support their milk supply, and they incorporate these into their postpartum diet. In this slim but monumental book, Hilary Jacobson (author of Mother Food), walks us through growing, cooking, infusing and tincturing these lactogenic plants. With sections on outdoor gardening and indoor gardening (sprouts and microgreens) we learn multiple options that allow us to experience the value of fresh plants that are used worldwide for postpartum support. You can learn about 40 such plants, known as 'galactagogues.' You can enjoy specific fruits, vegetables and herbs, and also plants you can wild forage, or identify already growing in your yard as weeds. And if your garden basks in the intense heat of a dry climate, Jacobson's wisdom on 'survival foods' and 'famine foods' ensures that you're also well-equipped to meet the challenges of your environment. Each plant provides information that not only supports breastfeeding, but also enriches your knowledge of human health and culture. Whether for your own breastfeeding needs, your reference book collection, or as a thoughtful baby shower gift, 'A Mother's Garden of Galactagogues' is a treasure. It's a celebration of the nurturing spirit of motherhood, a testament to the resilience of nature, and an empowering guide to boosting maternal health.

Anticancer Agents
This book is a printed edition of the Special Issue entitled "Anticancer Agents: Design, Synthesis and Evaluation" that was published in Molecules. Two review articles and thirty research papers are included in the Special Issue. Three second-generation androgen receptor antagonists that have been approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of prostate cancer have been reviewed. Identification of mimics of protein partners as protein-protein interaction inhibitors via virtual screening has been summarized and discussed. Anticancer agents targeting various protein targets, including IGF-1R, Src, protein kinase, aromatase, HDAC, PARP, Toll-Like receptor, c-Met, PI3Kdelta, topoisomerase II, p53, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, have been explored. The analogs of three well-known tubulin-interacting natural products, paclitaxel, zampanolide, and colchicine, have been designed, synthesized, and evaluated. Several anticancer agents representing diverse chemical scaffolds were assessed in different kinds of cancer cell models. The capability of some anticancer agents to overcome the resistance to currently available drugs was also studied. In addition to looking into the in vitro ability of the anticancer agents to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle, in vivo antitumor efficacy in animal models and DFT were also investigated in some papers.
Controlled Release Technologies
The history of pharmaceuticals is as old as humans are. Traditional practitioners had used drugs in one or another form in ancient times. Then came the era of traditional dosage forms including the most common and famous dosage forms e.g. tablets, capsules, syrups, etc. These dosage forms were unable to deal with the prolonged effect required, especially, when multiple frequencies of a single drug were required in a day. This originated the concept of digging new areas in the vast field of pharmaceutics. Therefore, an idea to fabricate controlled release dosage forms went through one's head. This was a paradigm change in the arena of pharmaceutical technology from conventional to controlled release formulations.Controlled release systems are one of the powerful tools used in advanced drug delivery systems. There are different technologies used to prepare controlled release systems. Polymeric matrices, ion-exchange systems, and osmotically controlled systems are a few examples of sustained-release systems. These systems along with some more technical floating systems have been discussed here in this book, keeping pharmacy students new in the arena. Therefore, this book will accomplish the thirst of students and researchers.

Amazing Things, Plants
A comprehensive compendium on the theory and practice of herbal medicine from expert herbalists Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw. This fundamental textbook draws on the wisdom of Christopher Hedley and Non Shaw, incorporating their belief in the importance of understanding herbal medicine in the context of living plants, and providing lived examples of how this can be used in the everyday practice of herbal medicine. Through these teachings, the book also acquaints readers with the rich legacy of Christopher and Non in Western herbal medicine. Drawing on Christopher's own approach to teaching herbalism, which was abundant with the importance of storytelling in learning, Plant Medicine is as fascinating as it is accessible, enriched with the depth of Christopher's own knowledge and warmth. The book is comprised of four parts: 'Roots' explores the history of plant medicine, investigating physiomedicalism and Galenic humoral medicine. The second section, 'Flowers', is a thorough, alphabetically ordered materia medica of the medicinal properties of individual plants, with properties, uses, preparations, dosage, cautions, and clinical uses of ninety-two plant medicines that Non and Christopher gathered over nearly two lifetimes. 'Fruits' provides information on how particular body systems and patient groups are treated therapeutically with herbal medicines, specifically covering the digestive, cardiovascular, nervous, urinary, musculoskeletal, endocrine, skin and immune systems. Finally, 'Seeds' concludes the book by inviting readers to consider going deeper and beyond their exploration of plant medicine, shifting their preconceptions of herbs to understand them on a more intimate level. Plant Medicine is a foundational text for all students and practitioners of herbal medicine, but it's wisdom and insight will also provide a guiding light for anyone seeking plant medicine as a way to reconnect to the abundance and beauty of nature.

Biomaterial-Related Infections
The use of medical devices (e.g., catheters, implants, and probes) is a common and essential part of medical care for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. However, these devices quite frequently lead to the incidence of infections due to the colonization of their abiotic surfaces by biofilm-growing microorganisms, which are progressively resistant to antimicrobial therapies. Several methods based on anti-infective biomaterials that repel microbes have been developed to combat device-related infections. Among these strategies, surface coating with antibiotics (e.g., beta-lactams), natural compounds (e.g., polyphenols), or inorganic elements (e.g., silver and copper nanoparticles) has been widely recognized as exhibiting broad-spectrum bactericidal or bacteriostatic activity. So, in order to achieve a better therapeutic response, it is crucial to understand how these infections are different from others. This will allow us to find new biomaterials characterized by antifouling coatings with repellent properties or low adhesion towards microorganisms, or antimicrobial coatings that are capable of killing microbes approaching the surface, improving biomaterial functionalization strategies and supporting tissues' bio-integration.
Beating Drug Addiction in Tehran
Dr Dolan's book details the intimate lives of four Iranian women, their struggle with drugs and the daily grind they faced in their personal lives.Surprisingly, Iran responded well to its AIDS crisis but forgot to include female drug users. While Dr Dolan delivered training to Iranian prison doctors, she met women who were addicted to drugs and were desperately in need of treatment. With her health professional colleagues in Iran, she set out to establish the first drug treatment clinic for women. She was granted access to areas and people not normally afforded to outsiders. One of the most interesting aspect of the clinic was the safe room that allowed women to remove their hejabs, smoke cigarettes and reveal their life stories. Working at the clinic challenged assumptions Dr Dolan had of Iran and its people. She came away with insights that are rare even in the world of global health. This book covers several years of Dr Dolan's work and research.

Ultramafic Geoecology of North America
Geoecology is an interdisciplinary endeavor that involves geology, soils, and plant communities. All of these features were observed and studied in representative ultramafic landscapes from the ancient continental platform and accreted terranes along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts to the Caribbean area. Understanding the geology and soils is very important for understanding the distributions of plant communities. Plant communities in ultramafic landscapes are of special interest to botanists, because they have unique "serpentine" vegetation, commonly with many endemic plant species. Descriptions of the plant communities are presented along with the soils of cold to hot and arid to humid climates in all kinds of ultramafic terranes. The plant communities are represented by the dominant species of trees, shrubs, and forbs. Also, bryophytes and lichens are mentioned as important ground cover in some subarctic and boreal landscapes. The plant communities range from barrens to dense forests and include alpine tundra and fell-fields, chaparral, savanna, open canopy forests, sagebrush, desert, and fens. Hundreds of plant species are mentioned in the characterization of these plant communities.

Preventing Suicide in Patients with Mental Disorders
Suicide is a complex phenomenon that is now considered understood as a neurodevelopmental condition encompassing childhood experiences as well as proximal conditions such as mental disorders and adverse life events. Individuals in crisis may face overwhelming psychological pain, which in some cases may overcome the threshold of each unique individual for whom suicide is considered the best option to deal with such pain. However, many socio-demographic, personal, or temperamental variables have been investigated for their causal association with suicide risk, but to date no single factor has clearly demonstrated an association with suicide. The mental disorders most frequently associated with suicide risk include bipolar disorders and major unipolar depression, substance use disorders and schizophrenia. However, anxiety, personality, eating, and trauma-related disorders, as well as organic mental disorders, also contribute to suicidal risk. Moreover, in modern society, the presence of social uncertainty, the changes in family models, the development of social media, and the loss of face-to-face interaction can have an impact on suicide risk, particularly in the younger generation.

Computational Methods for the Analysis of Genomic Data and Biological Processes
In recent decades, new technologies have made remarkable progress in helping to understand biological systems. Rapid advances in genomic profiling techniques such as microarrays or high-performance sequencing have brought new opportunities and challenges in the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. Such genetic sequencing techniques allow large amounts of data to be produced, whose analysis and cross-integration could provide a complete view of organisms. As a result, it is necessary to develop new techniques and algorithms that carry out an analysis of these data with reliability and efficiency. This Special Issue collected the latest advances in the field of computational methods for the analysis of gene expression data, and, in particular, the modeling of biological processes. Here we present eleven works selected to be published in this Special Issue due to their interest, quality, and originality.
Integrating Clinical and Translational Research Networks-Building Team Medicine
Medical centers are widely recognized as vital components of the healthcare system. However, academic medical centers are differentiated from their community counterparts by their mission, which typically focuses on clinical care, education, and research. Nonetheless, community clinics/hospitals fill a critical need and play a complementary role serving as the primary sites for health care in most communities. Furthermore, it is now increasingly recognized that in addition to physicians, physician-scientists, and other healthcare-related professionals, basic research scientists also contribute significantly to the emerging inter- and cross-disciplinary, team-oriented culture of translational science. Therefore, approaches that combine the knowledge, skills, experience, expertise, and visions of clinicians in academic medical centers and their affiliated community centers and hospitals, together with basic research scientists, are critical in shaping the emerging culture of translational research so that patients from the urban as well as suburban settings can avail the benefits of the latest developments in science and medicine. 'Integrating Clinical and Translational Research Networks-Building Team Medicine' is an embodiment of this ethos at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. It includes a series of papers authored by teams of leading clinicians, basic research scientists, and translational researchers. The authors discuss how engaging and collaborating with community-based practices, where the majority of older patients with cancer receive their care, can ensure that these patients receive the highest-quality, evidence-based care. Based on our collective experience at City of Hope, we would like to stress that the success of academic-community collaborative programs not only depends on the goodwill and vision of the participants but also on the medical administration, academic leadership, and policymakers who define the principles and rules by which cooperation within the health care industry occurs. We trust that our experience embodied in this singular compendium will serve as a 'Rosetta Stone' for other institutions and practitioners.
The Vertebrate Pigmentary System
The Vertebrate Pigmentary System: From pigment cells to Disorders provides readers with fundamental knowledge of the structural and functional aspects of vertebrate pigment cells - melanophores and melanocytes - from their origin to different stages of development to related diseases. Chapters of the book explain the specific regulatory receptors and markers, signaling pathways of skin melanocytes along with the diseases (hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation) in humans associated with their disruption. Concurrently, the etiologies of pigmentary disorders and the various therapeutic approaches for their treatment are presented in focused chapters of the book with updated information from recent publications. A summary of natural product based treatment for hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation rounds up the contents. This reference is a basic guide for medical students and dermatology residents, and a handy source of information for students, researchers, academicians in the field of pigment cell biology, pharmacology and cosmetology.
Light Medicine
Light Medicine is the science of connecting light and spirit with health and longevity in the human body. This evolutionary model connects the creative force of the divine spiritual being ─ incarnated in a physical body ─ to the Observer in quantum physics and explains how our thoughts affect physical reality. Through extensive research, Dr. Mihalcea ties together, in a unique way, multiple scientific disciplines - biophysics, genetics, torsion and quantum physics, biochemistry, and neurology - with the power of the mind. How we think manifests a state of health or disease. This tapestry of context provides a fundamental basis for how modern miracles of healing can happen and are intentionally created. This fantastic exploration of human possibilities leaves the reader inspired to dream a novel vision of health and longevity by reaching for new frontiers of science and mind.
