Obsolete
The world needs changing - that much is clear. But how best to do it? Change how you vote? Get out and protest? Have an argument? The fact is that the power sits in your pocket. Changing how we spend our money has more potential to change the world than almost anything else we can do with our time on this planet. Consumer spending accounts for over 60% of GDP across the world and it will hit a staggering $77 trillion a year by 2029. But the vast majority of this money currently goes to businesses that are fuelling problems, through their packaging, formulations and practices, the same companies making huge profits and resisting change. But if we moved just 1% of spending to brands that are making a positive impact on our planet, this would amount to $700 billion every year. And the good news is that it's already happening. A rising tide of 'Change Brands' are emerging across the world and acting as powerful catalysts to tackle some of the biggest problems facing humanity. These Change Brands, such as Tony's Chocolonely, Oatly, Vinted, and Liquid Death, are putting legacy brands under pressure by winning consumers' hearts, minds and their spending. As this movement gathers pace, many legacy brands and business models will be in danger of becoming obsolete in the next decade if they don't radically reconsider how they do things. Chris Baker explains why one of the best ways to change the world is to create a brand and provides clear steps on how to accomplish this. The book includes guidance to help legacy brands introduce Change Brand thinking into their own business and provides unique insight from within big companies battling to come to terms with a changing world via a secret agent on the inside, 'Agent Change'.

1950s Television Advertising
"Winston tastes good like a cigarette should" and "You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent" are only two of the many slogans associated with advertising on television in the 1950s. There were celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Eden, and Peter Lorre who performed in commercials; there were shows built around a single product (e.g., The Texaco Star Theater and The Colgate Comedy Hour); there were numerous premiums offered to children (e.g., The Sky King Detecto Microscope, The Mickey Mouse Club Magazine), and gimmicks used by sponsors to attract viewers to their shows (e.g., "Win a Wagon Train Pony" and "The Howdy Doody Smile Contest"). This is the first and only book of its kind; it is a nostalgic, trivia-filled history presented through the actual programs and commercials of the 1950s. In addition to two extensively detailed sections, which have never been released online or in any other book ("Sponsor and Program" and "Program and Sponsor"), rare television theme songs with their original sponsor tags (products mentioned in the theme songs) are also presented. It all began on July 1, 1941 when WNBT (the NBC affiliate in New York City) televised the first commercial, a ten second spot for Bulova Watches.

The Power of Brand Ownership
How do brands cultivate loyalty and influence consumer purchasing decisions? The Power of Brand Ownership explores the complex dynamics between branding and consumer identity within both the physical and digital realms that form our cultural landscape. Miriam J. Johnson uncovers a symbiotic relationship where brands serve not merely as navigational aids in a consumer's journey but also as integral components of self-identity and social projection, and the power that entails. Investigating the nuances of power shifts, brand authenticity, activism, and the gendered nature of consumption, Johnson asserts that brands are both influenced by and influencers of the cultural terrain they inhabit as well as the temporal contexts in which they interact. Theoretical frameworks articulate the fluidity of capital within the consumer-brand nexus whilst insightful case studies illustrate industry examples, revealing the shifting strategies employed by companies to make brands identifiable and desirable in the ever-changing cultural landscape.
