Gracchus
Gracchus is a grand opera that tells of an unforgettable human drama set to soaring music. The whole unfolds according to the principles of the total work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk), incorporating perennial human themes while embracing music, poetry, dance, scenography, and philosophical reflection in a spectacle of emotional power whose purpose is to entertain and to edify. Besides the dialogue and lyrics, the libretto contains summary descriptions of the music for each scene giving the reader a substantive taste of the score. Though the plot has a historical basis being set in the late Roman Republic and centered on the life of Gaius Gracchus, a tribune of the people, the story uses that period to create a socio-political allegory of contemporary times. The text and score of Gracchus do not, finally, just combine but merge to produce a single aesthetic phenomenon inspired by the roots of opera, epic literature, and the dramatic tradition of classical tragedy.
Praise, Worship And Lyrics Songbook
The Holy Spirit inspired this Praise and Worship Songbook through the members of Shiloh Vessels. The scope was to select a wide range of praise and worship songs and bring them into one place, making song selection easier. Previously, the song selection process was a task for the praise and worship leaders, especially for new and upcoming leaders. For example, when we practiced, there were times when songs did not flow together due to the difference in song beat and structure. Instrumentalists would wait for the readjustment of the songs before practice resumed, It was evident during the preparation stage that there needed to be more readily available songs or lyrics to select. When songs were made available, they were disorganized and not easily accessible. It took much effort to bring songs together sequentially. This prompted the leadership to work towards compiling an easy-to-use songs book as an asset to help the current members and future newcomers to the Choir. Praise and Worship songs were sourced along with their lyrics and links to the song's performance. We then arranged each song into a sequence by rhythm, beat, genre, and song version. This Praise and Worship Songbook will eradicate wrong song choices. It will enhance the communication between song ministers and instrumentalists. We believe this songbook will bless the body of Christ as we sing praises to our Father together.

Egostrip Book 1 is a beautifully designed collection of Dan Lish's stunning character illustrations from the world of hip hop and beyond. The Egostrip project began on Dan's daily commute to work, where he chose to draw his favorite musicians in little black books. Created in black fiber tip ink pen, straight to paper, while the train rocked back and forth, commuters knocking his elbow (or vice versa). Back in the studio, the illustrations were brought into the computer and digitally colored, adding texture and details. The book includes 138 illustrations of pioneering artists from hip hop's golden era, such as De La Soul, Madlib, DJ Premier, Mobb Deep, Nas, Cypress Hill, J.Period, J Dilla, Kool Keith, MF DOOM, The Roots, Biggie Smalls, A Tribe Called Quest, Biz Markie and The Beastie Boys. The ideas of the classical rhetoric books are traced through the Tudor classroom to the late eighteenth century. Concentrating on performance techniques that aid the communication of musical ideas to an audience, historical source material is used to demonstrate how to hold the attention of the listener and at the same time move and delight them. Quotations from the rhetoric manuals, Shakespeare and the Bible are complemented by over one hundred musical examples, drawn mainly from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, illustrating the connection between speaking and playing in the rhetorical style.
Charles Villiers Stanford: Man and Musician

The Anglo-Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) is often remembered as the teacher of many of Britain's first generation of twentieth-century composers. He was, however, a composer of great diversity. An enthusiastic composer for the theatre and opera house, he was a symphonist, songwriter, and composer of church music; his national, indeed, international reputation was also reflected in the many works he wrote for some of the most prominent virtuosi of the time. Driven by a strong sense of ambition, he sought to advance the cause of British music not only as a composer but as a university professor, practical musician and conductor. Pre-eminent in the 1880s and 90s, he was eclipsed by Elgar during the Edwardian years, but his creative powers continued unabated until the early 1920s. As the author of a wide range of musical works, which we are now able to experience through more live performances, broadcasts and recordings (the latter has expanded exponentially since the first edition of this book), we are now aware of the composer's greater musical achievements, particularly in the province of opera. This expanded and revised edition offers new musical and biographical discussion drawing on a wider range of primary and secondary sources. It brings new insights to Stanford's life as performer, conductor and teacher/author at Cambridge and the RCM, as well as an arranger and editor of Irish folk music. Another emphasis in this revised edition is Stanford's lifelong aspiration to promote opera in English and the establishment of an English National Opera in London. The etymology of the word is qaram, from the Arabic word love and Somalis use it to describe the oldest modern musical composition of Somaliland, mainly from the 1940s to the mid-1960s. The word Qaraami became synonymous with "old-time good music", or for young people simply "old-time music". Qaraami can be classified for Somali culture as classical music is in the Western world, and for modern Somali literature, the Qaraami era remains an extraordinary period, in which musical production, rooted in typical traditional pastoral folk dance, blends with the effects of urbanization in cities. The melodies produced in that era of classical works are those that have stood the test of time and underlined the fundamental foundations of modern Somali song production, in other words, Qaraami songs must be classified as classical. The Genesis and Structure of the Hungarian Jazz Diaspora
In Hungary, jazz was at the forefront of heated debates sparked by the racialised tensions between national music traditions and newly emerging forms of popular culture that challenged the prevailing status quo within the cultural hierarchies of different historical eras. Drawing on an extensive, four-year field research project, including ethnographic observations and 29 in-depth interviews, this book is the first to explore the hidden diasporic narrative(s) of Hungarian jazz through the system of historically formed distinctions linked to the social practices of assimilated Jews and Romani musicians. The chapters illustrate how different concepts of authenticity and conflicting definitions of jazz as the "sound of Western modernity" have resulted in a unique hierarchical setting. The book's account of the fundamental opposition between US-centric mainstream jazz (bebop) and Bart籀k-inspired free jazz camps not only reveals the extent to which traditionalism and modernism were linked to class- and race-based cultural distinctions, but offers critical insights about the social logic of Hungary's geocultural positioning in the 'twilight zone' between East and West to use the words of Maria Todorova. Following a historical overview that incorporates comparisons with other Central European jazz cultures, the book offers a rigorous analysis of how the transition from playing 'caf矇house music' to bebop became a significant element in the status claims of Hungary's 'significant others', i.e. Romani musicians. By combining the innovative application of Pierre Bourdieu's cultural sociology with popular music studies and postcolonial scholarship, this work offers a forceful demonstration of the manifold connections of this particular jazz scene to global networks of cultural production, which also continue to shape it.

Hearing Double
When we talk about a jazz "standard" we usually mean one of the many songs that jazz musicians repeatedly play as part of their core repertoire. But unlike musical works in the tradition of so-called classical music, standards--whether plucked from the "Great American Songbook" or from recordings by other jazz musicians--are always being transformed in performance. They are rearranged and improvised upon, given new chords and altered melodies. These transformations might be small and seemingly unimportant, or they might be radical revisions. Which raises the question: across all of these various performances, what gives a standard its identity? In Hearing Double author Brian Kane answers that question by offering a new theory of musical works that can account for the unique challenges presented by standards. Building from the bottom up--from the actual practices of jazz musicians toward their philosophical implications--he gives a comprehensive theory of how a standard can undergo radical musical transformations yet remain identifiable. Through an analysis of the historical and cultural conditions under which standards came to prominence he shows how popular music from the 1930s to the 1960s was circulated and distributed and provides new insight into why the era of the standard emerged when it did. In addition, Kane addresses the aesthetic significance of standards and describes a special mode of listening that standards require. According to Kane, we effectively "hear double"--hearing an ideal song in our minds at the same time as we hear the live performance with our ears. Cabin Boys, Milkmaids, and Rough Seas
During his correspondence with erotic folklore collector Gershon Legman, famed chantey singer and collector Stan Hugill (1906-1992) shared unexpurgated versions of the songs in his repertoire. These bawdy songs were meant to be a part of Legman's larger project concerning erotic folksong. Upon Legman's death in 1999, the unfinished and unpublished manuscript sank into obscurity and was believed by many to be permanently lost. Thankfully this "holy grail" of chantey texts had been safe in the private collection of Legman's widow, Judith Legman, all along. Cabin Boys, Milkmaids, and Rough Seas: Identity in the Unexpurgated Repertoire of Stan Hugill is the first critical investigation of this repository, reproduced here for the first time. Training an interdisciplinary lens on twenty-four unexpurgated texts, author Jessica M. Floyd interrogates the articulation of gender, sexuality, and identity as it is expressed in these cultural artifacts of the sea. Opening with both a critical explication of the chantey genre, as well as situating Hugill's repertoire in the canon of folksong, the book introduces readers to the critical realities that attend this rich cultural tradition. Analytical chapters demonstrate the kaleidoscopic representation of gender and sexuality in this finite repertoire. Each inquiry is connected and overlapping, demonstrating an ebb and flow not unlike the waters on which the songs were sung. Words of warning, heteronormative economies, and queer undercurrents each collide to present an image of sailing life that is nuanced and complicated, provocative and evocative, transgressive and sometimes radical.
