Jazz and Death: Reception, Rituals, and Representations critically examines the myriad and complex interactions between jazz and death, from the New Orleans "jazz funeral" to jazz in heaven or hell, final recordings, jazz monuments, and the music's own presumed death. It looks at how fans, critics, journalists, historians, writers, the media, and musicians have narrated, mythologized, and relayed those stories. What causes the fascination of the jazz world with its deaths? What does it say about how our culture views jazz and its practitioners? Is jazz somehow a fatal culture?The narratives surrounding jazz and death cast a light on how the music and its creators are perceived. Stories of jazz musicians typically bring up different tropes, ranging from the tragic, misunderstood genius to the notion that virtuosity somehow comes at a price. Coros Y Danzas
Coros y Danzas explores how women of the early Franco regime adapted musical folklore and Spanish nationalism according to different political circumstances. Author Daniel David Jordan focuses on the end of the Spanish Civil War until the Pact of Madrid with the United States-a period where Spain transformed itself from a supporter of Nazi Germany to a faithful ally of the Western Bloc. The Secci籀n Femenina of the fascist Falange party officially represented the regime's views and policies on female gender roles. Sending their instructoras de m繳sica to remote villages throughout the nation's diverse cultural and linguistic regions to select, transcribe, and compose songs and dances, they were portrayed as the keepers of Spanish folk music. Through their Music Department, these women shaped traditional Spanish songs and dances to promote ideas of Catholic morality throughout the nation's culturally diverse regions, helped legitimize colonial involvement in Spain's African territories, and formed political ties with the Allied powers after World War II. The Secci籀n Femenina was never simply a one-sided mouthpiece of the dictatorship's nationalist, Catholic underpinnings. Despite the Franco regime's patriarchal nature, many members were highly independent, negotiating with local cultural elites and foreign political diplomats to further their own careers and personal philosophies. Drawing from literature on cultural diplomacy and nation-building, Coros y Danzas proposes how the Secci籀n Femenina's definition of Spanish cultural and racial purity was never monolithic, but a malleable concept that was nuanced depending on geographical and social contexts in which its members were operating.

Music, Dance and the Archive reimagines records of performance cultures from the archive through collaborative and creative research. In this edited volume, Amanda Harris, Linda Barwick and Jakelin Troy bring together performing artists, cultural leaders and interdisciplinary scholars to highlight the limits of archival records of music and dance. Through artistic methods drawn from Indigenous methodologies, dance studies and song practices, the contributors explore modes of re-embodying archival records, renewing song practices, countering colonial narratives and re-presenting performance traditions. The banjo has been emblematic of the Southern Appalachian Mountains since the late twentieth century. Making Music: The Banjo in a Southern Appalachian County takes a close look at the instrument and banjo players in Haywood County, North Carolina. Author William C. Allsbrook Jr., MD, presents the oral histories of thirty-two banjo players, all but two of whom were born in Haywood County. These talented musicians recount, in their own words, their earliest memories of music, and of the banjo, as well as the appeal of the banjo. They also discuss learning to play the instrument, including what it "feels like" playing the banjo, many describing occasional "flow states." In the book, Allsbrook explores an in-home musical folkway that developed along the colonial frontier. By the mid-1800s, frontier expansion had ceased in Haywood County due to geographic barriers, but the in-home musical tradition, including the banjo, survived in largely isolated areas. Vestiges of that tradition remain to this day, although the region has undergone significant changes over the lifetimes of the musicians interviewed. As a result, the survival of the in-home tradition is not guaranteed. Readers are invited into the private lives of the banjo players and asked to consider the future of the banjo in the face of contemporary trends. The future will be shaped by how this remarkable mountain culture continues to adapt to these challenges. Still, this thriving community of banjo players represents the vibrant legacy of the banjo in Haywood County and the persistence of tradition in the twenty-first century.

In the aftermath of apartheid, South Africa undertook an ambitious revision of its intellectual property system. In Lion's Share Veit Erlmann traces the role of copyright law in this process and its impact on the South African music industry. Although the South African government tied the reform to its postapartheid agenda of redistributive justice and a turn to a postindustrial knowledge economy, Erlmann shows how the persistence of structural racism and Euro-modernist conceptions of copyright threaten the viability of the reform project. In case studies ranging from antipiracy police raids and the crafting of legislation to protect indigenous expressive practices to the landmark lawsuit against Disney for its appropriation of Solomon Linda's song "Mbube" for its hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" from The Lion King, Erlmann follows the intricacies of musical copyright through the criminal justice system, parliamentary committees, and the offices of a music licensing and royalty organization. Throughout, he demonstrates how copyright law is inextricably entwined with race, popular music, postcolonial governance, indigenous rights, and the struggle to create a more equitable society.

With great pleasure, we announce the publication of the second book devoted to one of Armenia's most important ashughs. The focus of our attention is on Sheram as a poet of love this time.Ashough Sheram of Armenia composed so many beautiful and memorable songs that are still performed today that we are confident that his music will continue to live on long after his passing in 1938. The beauty, complexity, and sometimes unconventional nature of his melodies have earned him the nickname Sheram, which refers to a silkworm. "You are weaving your melodies in a similar manner to a silkworm", was an observation by the distinguished Armenian poet Hovhannes Hovhannisyan once, resulting in the birth of his new musical avatar.There are thirty songs by Ashough Sheram in this book, which have been translated for the first time into English by the publisher.A large part of Sheram's lyrics has been composed in the Alexandropol dialect (Gyumri) of Armenian. Therefore, to assist Armenian readers who are unfamiliar with this dialect in understanding the songs, a comprehensive dictionary is provided at the end of the book with English terms where applicable.And finally, the last chapter contains the musical notation of the songs as transcribed by Sheram's son, composer Vardges Talyan circa 1948.
