At the height of the blues revival, Marina Bokelman and David Evans, young graduate students from California, made two trips to Louisiana and Mississippi and short trips in their home state to do fieldwork for their studies at UCLA. While there, they made recordings and interviews and took extensive field notes and photographs of blues musicians and their families. Going Up the Country: Adventures in Blues Fieldwork in the 1960s presents their experiences in vivid detail through the field notes, the photographs, and the retrospective views of these two passionate researchers. The book includes historical material as well as contemporary reflections by Bokelman and Evans on the times and the people they met during their southern journeys. Their notes and photographs take the reader into the midst of memorable encounters with many obscure but no less important musicians, as well as blues legends, including Robert Pete Williams, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Al Wilson (cofounder of Canned Heat), Babe Stovall, Reverend Ruben Lacy, and Jack Owens. This volume is not only an adventure story, but also a scholarly discussion of fieldwork in folklore and ethnomusicology. Including retrospective context and commentary, the field note chapters describe searches for musicians, recording situations, social and family dynamics of musicians, and race relations and the racial environment, as well as the practical, ethical, and logistical problems of doing fieldwork. The book features over one hundred documentary photographs that depict the field recording sessions and the activities, lives, and living conditions of the artists and their families. These photographs serve as a visual counterpart equivalent to the field notes. The remaining chapters explain the authors' methodology, planning, and motivations, as well as their personal backgrounds prior to going into the field, their careers afterwards, and their thoughts about fieldwork and folklore research in general. In this enlightening book, Bokelman and Evans provide an exciting and honest portrayal of blues field research in the 1960s.

Holy Ghost is the first extended study of free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, who is seen today as one of the most important innovators in the history of jazz. Ayler synthesized children's songs, La Marseillaise, American march music, and gospel hymns, turning them into powerful, rambunctious, squalling free-jazz improvisations. Some critics considered him a charlatan, others a heretic for unhinging the traditions of jazz. Some simply considered him insane. However, like most geniuses, Ayler was misunderstood in his time. His divine messages of peace and love, apocalyptic visions of flying saucers, and the strange account of the days leading up to his being found floating in New York's East River are central to his mystique, but, as Koloda points out, they are a distraction, overshadowing his profound impact on the direction of jazz as one of the most visible avant-garde players of the 1960s and a major influence on others, including John Coltrane. Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), the best known son of Johann Sebastian Bach, was the most original composer of the period between the Baroque era and the Classical period. He was one of the most brilliant keyboard players of his day and created the modern expressive school of piano writing which particularly influenced the two great Classical masters, Hayden and Mozart. Music, Sound, and Documentary Film in the Global South, edited by Christopher L. Ballengee, represents an important step toward thinking about the production and analysis of the soundscapes of documentary film, all while exploring a range of social, cultural, technological, and theoretical questions relevant to current trends in Global South studies. Written by a diverse set of authors, including filmmakers, academics, and cultural critics, the ten essays in this book provide fresh evaluations of the place of music and sound in documentary films outside the European-American milieu. On the whole, the authors illuminate how the invention of documentary film was at first a product of the colonialist project. Yet over time, access to filmmaking technologies led to the creation of documentary films relevant for local communities and national identities. In this sense, documentary film in the Global South might be broadly defined as a mode of personally or politically mediated storytelling that, by one route or another, has become a useful and recognizable means of memorializing traumatic histories and critiquing everyday lived experience. Matte S.S. Black, changed from Matt Jonas because of his Disassociation Identity Disorder (or what used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder) from his childhood abuse. This condition has been undiagnosed Mattes whole life as he has regressed to his childhood and other personalities often to help him cope. Matte's brain structure sits in between/next to autism, schizophrenia, indigenous shaman, mathematical genius, and his psychiatrist basically classed him as the artistic genius in the circle. This puts him in the .01% of the population that has access to a part of their brain most people don't even know to exist let alone use. Matte's artistic abilities are incredible, to say the least. The way he can connect with other people in other dimensions and learn in other realms and manifest some of these things in the third dimension is a rare gift according to his psychiatrist. Matte has always been told he is talented... that's not the case... he's gifted. Matte has quite a few personalities that help him create and cope in life. Sarah Scarletton, a 3 year old girl, (the S S part of Matte's name) was the first to emerge and is the most prominent. Matte usually dissociates to her first but other alters can be present or take over. Matte is writing a "journal" since his formal diagnosis as this helps him to recollect some of his childhood memories as painful and sickening as they might be, This is helping him to understand why his brain functions the way it does and why it's wired like that. Matte was voted #1 sign writer and Airbrush artist in Australia. But this is the worst title you could have in the art world as talentless crap that is drooled over and Matte is shunned. Quote from Matte "Dear artist, don't become a highly-skilled artist, it will cost you your career in the arts". Matte delves deep into the discrimination he has had to endure from left-brained, analytical, pretentious people running the arts in Australia. The Damned are forever in the history books as the first UK punk band to get an album out. Damned Damned Damned was a flamethrower of a record, led by the incendiary violence of "New Rose" (first UK punk single as well) and "Neat Neat Neat," two shocking punk anthems that defined the golden era of the new wave more purely pogo-mad than anything outta The Clash or the Sex Pistols. And the mayhem never let up, with the band already breaking up and reforming (another first!) by 1979 for one of the greatest punk albums of all time, Machine Gun Etiquette (by the way, The Damned were also the first UK punk band to tour America).
