Jane's Addiction - Shockingly Habitual
Jane's Addiction: SHOCKINGLY HABITUAL, is detailed, deep look at the history of rebellion and redemption. An ntimate and unflinching portrait of one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands to emerge from the 1980s Los Angeles underground. Chronicling their meteoric rise, turbulent years, and enduring legacy, this book captures the spirit of a band that defied convention and reshaped the sound of alternative rock. From the raw energy of their independent debut album, Jane's Addiction (Triple X), to the seismic cultural shift ushered in by Nothing's Shocking and the genre-defying masterpiece Ritual de lo Habitual, the story of Jane's Addiction is a tale of visionary artistry, uncompromising creativity, and chaotic self-destruction. Tracks like "Jane Says," "Mountain Song," and "Stop!" became anthems for a generation, blending punk, metal, funk, and psychedelia into a sound that couldn't be categorized.Led by the enigmatic Perry Farrell-an artist, provocateur, and the mind behind Lollapalooza-the band grappled with addiction, fame, and the limits of their own ambition. Dave Navarro's haunting guitar work, Eric Avery's thunderous bass lines, and Stephen Perkins' explosive drumming created a chemistry as volatile as it was transcendent. Yet their groundbreaking music often stood in stark contrast to the chaos behind the scenes: grueling tours, personal conflicts, and struggles with substance abuse that nearly derailed everything. This book delves into their beginnings in the gritty clubs of Los Angeles, their artistic peak with Nothing's Shocking, and the creative clashes that led to their first breakup at the height of their powers. It explores Farrell's vision of music as a communal, spiritual experience, Navarro's fight for self-expression amidst addiction, and Avery's deeply introspective role as the band's sonic architect. The story doesn't end with their disbandment; it follows their evolution through reunions, side projects like Porno for Pyros and Deconstruction, and their triumphant return with Strays and The Great Escape Artist.Through meticulous research and fictionalized dialogue, Jane's Addiction: A History of Rebellion and Redemption offers an honest look at the band's artistic and personal struggles, their cultural impact, and their enduring influence on the alternative music landscape. It's a testament to the power of art to challenge, inspire, and endure-a love letter to a band that broke all the rules and changed the game forever. This book isn't just about the music; it's about the people, the art, and the chaos that made Jane's Addiction a legend.

Boundaries, Space and Register in Beethoven's Piano Music
Develops a new theory of space and register which will be essential reading for the music analyst, while offering radical new interpretations of canonical repertoire for the pianist, Beethoven scholar and informed listener. This is the first book to demonstrate the significance of registral structure and spatial narrative in Beethoven's oeuvre across his stylistic evolution. Introducing a far-reaching new analytical method and theoretical framework to a substantial corpus of piano music including sonatas, variations and bagatelles, the book extends conventional notions of register, Beethoven's handling of the highs and lows of pitch, to the broader concepts of pitch boundaries and the shaping of sonic space. Tracing theories of register from Schenker to the present-day, Miller moves beyond these approaches in his discussions of what he terms "spatial analysis". Proceeding from simple to more complex forms in a broadly chronological sequence, the author describes 'spatial narratives' of each work by means of cutting-edge computational diagrams and close-to-the text commentary. This book shows how linear patterns at extreme boundaries correlate with structural highpoints and divisions within musical forms, for instance sonata structures, forming striking large-scale connections within, and between, individual movements. Analysed are interactions of high and low boundaries through gestures such as registral bridges, registral shifts, and the distribution of climatic peaks and wide-spans. Equally central to Miller's study is the survey of keyboard instruments of Beethoven's day, keyboard choreography, and spatial expansion and contraction, reflecting pianistic virtuosity and expression. The mediation of structural and expressive aspects culminates in the physicality and spirituality of the late works interpreted with metaphorical symbolism.

Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District
Shostakovich's lurid opera of sex, violence, and murder, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, is famous for being banned by personal decree of Joseph Stalin in 1936. Dramatically revived by Shostakovich's close friend, the cellist and Soviet 矇migr矇 Mstislav Rostropovich in 1979, Lady Macbeth is now an international hit. In the first-ever study of this beloved but still-controversial opera, Pauline Fairclough asks whether we have become so distracted by its traumatic reception history that we overlook what is truly shocking about it: namely, Lady Macbeth's frank portrayal of sexual violence against women. Arguing that Shostakovich himself vacillated over how consensual its central sex scene should be, she grounds the opera's presentation of women, sexuality, and sexual violence in both real-life events and culture of early Soviet Russia. In a challenge to the still-potent Cold War Western assumption that only the banned original was faithful to Shostakovich's true creative impulse, Fairclough asks that we take another look at the composer's revision of the 1950s, Katerina Izmailova, which cut the sex scene altogether. In questioning the assertion - repeated even today - that Shostakovich simply "sanitized" Lady Macbeth for puritanical Soviet censors, she invites us to take the older composer at his word and consider whether, in fact, his revised opera solves the intractable dramaturgical problems that had caused him to make so many revisions to the sex scene when the opera was first staged in 1934.

Change
By 1960, musicians, critics, record buyers, and club patrons in New York City agreed that a "new thing" in jazz had arrived. That new thing was what we in the twenty-first century call free jazz, and it represented a significant change within and, for some, a dramatic departure from what was commonly understood as modern jazz. The arresting, abstract sound of the new music pioneered by ensembles led by Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, and other experimentalist improvising musicians became the focal point of an ongoing controversy in the 1960s that called into question their musicianship, legitimacy, and sanity. Flourishing in an age of anti-establishment protest and radical politics--what writer Amiri Baraka characterized as the inevitable expression of Black American culture--and explained by musicians as the product of newfound consciousness, the new thing was, by 1966, almost unanimously dismissed by the music press as the discordant sound of black anger. Author Kwami Coleman integrates musical analyses of key recordings, musician interviews, periodicals, and rare archival sources to tell the story of jazz's emergent avant-garde, providing readers with ways to listen to and understand this innovative and disruptive music. By shining a comprehensive light on an important and still-misunderstood revolutionary moment in experimental music history, he illustrates the fundamental elements of this new music and what made it so experimental within the context of modern jazz. Coleman proposes heterophony--a multi-voice texture where cohesion is achieved by means other than tonal center and meter--as a theoretical lens by which to interpret the affectual force of the new thing's abstract harmonic textures and rhythms. In doing so, he draws connections to the social and political world that enveloped and motivated the musicians, writers, and listeners at the heart of the new thing's practice, recordings, and publicity. In his chronological account of the music's development in the early 1960s, Coleman offers readers a new framework to better understand the aesthetics and converging cultural currents of experimental free improvisation in the 1960s.
Music, Sound and Identity in Video Games
This book offers a comprehensive overview of how video game sound and music represent cultures, spaces and personal identifications. Focusing on the concept of identity, the volume brings together issues as diverse as belonging to an ethnic or cultural group, identifying with certain sexualities or being able to deduce the historical or geographical context of a game. This volume explores whether the musical and sound identities linked to video games are based on clich矇s and stereotyped arrangements that span cultures and times. It includes case studies that analyse the mechanisms used by game producers, composers and sound designers to "characterise" and represent different identities to broad audiences of potential players, as well as how the players perceive these sonic inputs. The book is organized into three main sections, covering topics as the representation of historical periods, musical stereotypes of cultures from different geographic locations, representations of identity in fictional spaces and sonic depictions gender.
Music, Dance and the Archive
Music, Dance and the Archive reimagines records of performance cultures from the archive through collaborative and creative research. In this edited volume, Amanda Harris, Linda Barwick and Jakelin Troy bring together performing artists, cultural leaders and interdisciplinary scholars to highlight the limits of archival records of music and dance. Through artistic methods drawn from Indigenous methodologies, dance studies and song practices, the contributors explore modes of re-embodying archival records, renewing song practices, countering colonial narratives and re-presenting performance traditions. The book's nine chapters are written by song and dance practitioners, curators, music and dance historians, anthropologists, linguists and musicologists, who explore music and dance by Indigenous people from the West, far north and southeast of the Australian continent, and from Aotearoa New Zealand, Taiwan and Turtle Island (North America).Music, Dance and the Archive interrogates historical practices of access to archives by showing how Indigenous performing artists and community members and academic researchers (Indigenous and non-Indigenous) are collaborating to bring life to objects that have been stored in archives. It not only examines colonial archiving practices but also creative and provocative efforts to redefine the role of archives and to bring them into dialogue with contemporary creative work. Through varied contributions the book seeks to destabilise the very definition of "archives" and to imagine the different forms in which cultural knowledge can be held for current and future Indigenous stakeholders. Music, Dance and the Archive highlights the necessity of relationships, Country and creativity in practising song and dance, and in revitalising practices that have gone out of use.As contemporary Australia reckons with its past, this volume is both timely and urgent. We readers are challenged to critically reflect on how history lives on in the present - with implications not only for creativity, heritage, and the arts, but also for prosperous and equitable societies and thriving cultures, now and into the future. This unique and lively collection is a landmark in scholarship on Indigenous performing arts and the archive, with relevance for Australia and beyond.
