Last Waltz
Craig Harris dives deeply into The Band, including the myths and confusions surrounding its members, and provides a wide-ranging account from their very beginnings with Ronnie Hawkins, collaboration with Bob Dylan, to the present. A half-century after The Band's original lineup, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson, and Levon Helm played together for a final time at a star-studded concert-the "Last Waltz"-on Thanksgiving 1976. The group's blend of folk, blues, country, Dixieland, and rock 'n' roll is revered as a root of Americana music. Harris interweaves original and previously unpublished interviews with the late Robertson, Danko, and Hawkins, as well as producer/sideman Aaron "Professor Louie" Hurwitz, drummer Rick Ciarlante, the Helm Band's Larry Campbell and his wife Teresa Williams, and others. Recordings, concerts, festivals, film appearances, Robertson's soundtracks for Martin Scorsese, and others are assessed closely. But this isn't just a story celebrating the group's countless hits, successes, and victories. Despite their lasting influence, The Band's journey was far from smooth. Drug and alcohol abuse, poor health, bankruptcies, and bitter conflicts over songwriting credits took their toll. Craig Harris looks at it all.

Amazing Sounds in a Midwestern Town
Between 1846 and 1966, in the unlikely creative world of Bartholomew County, Indiana, innovation prevailed and quality of life was pursued. We can't divorce innovation then from what is available now; the past led to the present, and the present shapes the future. Performers, educators, and philanthropists of a bygone era actively brought forth new ideas. Worlds of church, school, and community overlapped and interacted almost seamlessly for decades as a backdrop for musical creativity. There were no "stodgy" old-timers as a cursory view of music history might falsely suggest. Joseph I. Irwin, A. D. Fillmore, Francis J. Crump, John Smith Crump, J. G. Schwartzkopf, Benjamin Hutchins, William and Jennie Bates, Arthur Mason, Will Harding, Jessie Kitchen, Ida Edinburn, G. Chester and Elise Kitzinger, Gary F. Davis Sr., Elsie Sweeney, Nettie Sweeney Miller, J. Irwin Miller, the Barbour brothers, and E. Wayne Berry, and many more, were innovators (often in their twenties and thirties!), not maintainers of a sacred status-quo.So is our world of instant musical gratification better, richer, and more diverse? The final answer is ours to decide. Putting our minds and imaginations in the world of some outstanding people during the 120-year scope of this book can enrich our viewpoint and help us assess our self-indulgent musical souls. As you read this book, escape your present by turning to the past, then return to your present with a fresh perspective on what to do with it.

Who Listens?
Imagine someone who attended a Beethoven Symphony in 1805. Now imagine a listener attending the same symphony today. Both create meanings by relying on previous experiences, but no one assumes they leave their concerts with the same experience. Yet, when analyzing music, we often rely on "ideal listeners," presuming all have the same experience. Who Listens? Experience, Cognition, and Musical Meaning is a fascinating look into the importance of who is listening and how. Author Janet Bourne presents a new set of cognitively-based tools for analyzing music from the perspective of the listener. This book shows how listening is an active and creative act, and that many people make sense of music largely by drawing on their previous experiences, particularly experiences with music. According to research in cognitive science, listeners use a musical form of analogy and categorization to relate what they previously heard to what they hear in the moment. To demonstrate that listeners draw on this experience to perceive meaning when listening, Bourne combines music analytic tools, empirical psychological methods, and reception history. Drawing on analogy and categorization, Bourne has designed cognitively-based tools for analyzing music from the perspective of the listener to create different interpretations for different listeners. While Part 1 outlines the analytical tools, Part 2 analyzes pieces by Beethoven from the perspective of three groups of listeners: Beethoven's early 19th-century contemporaries; late 20th- and 21st-century musicians and music scholars; and 21st-century film-goers. In so doing, this book illuminates how musical meanings change when considering different listeners' backgrounds and ways of listening, giving voice to overlooked reception histories and musical meanings.

Shouting Out Loud
The first biography of legendary and influential British punk band The Raincoats, who are long revered by those in the international punk scene. The Raincoats were formed in London in 1977 as an experimental punk band synonymous with their indie label, Rough Trade. They went on to create what Vivien Goldman called "a new legacy of punk" and arguably became the most pioneering female band of the post-punk era while inspiring a new wave of DIY and queercore artists. Introduced by Kurt Cobain to a new generation in the 1990s, The Raincoats were invited to tour with Nirvana, and were known as the "godmothers of grunge" and "godmothers of Riot Grrrl" before eventually becoming label mates with Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Hole, Bikini Kill, and Elastica. In the 21st-century, The Raincoats singularly inspired Bikini Kill to reform after a 20-year hiatus. Featuring exclusive interviews and brand new photos from the Raincoats' archives, as well as reproduced ephemera, Shouting Out Loud is the first ever biography of this groundbreaking band and shows how this pioneering group of women paved the way for those that followed in their footsteps. Additionally, the book features original interviews with members of Sonic Youth, Hole, Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Big Joanie, Liz Phair, and many more. Meticulously researched and sweeping in scope, Shouting Out Loud is the must-have account of a band that became the linchpin of feminist music in the 20th century.

Rooted in the independent research network Suoni, this volume speaks to music scholars and students eager to rethink the role of music in shaping a more equitable world. Engaging and accessible, it challenges us to ask: What does social responsibility look like in music research today?

Which Craft?
The Magic Flute has elicited a wide range of interpretations. From simple fairy tale to Masonic allegory, every meaning seems to have been explored. Yet the mystery remains. Mozart himself was less than helpful, leaving only inconsequential accounts of the work's conception. His untimely death, on December 5th 1791, a couple of months after the premiere has fueled additional controversies. The composer's personal letters, in which The Magic Flute is mentioned, contain mostly trivial reports of first impressions. They describe the reaction of the Viennese public and deal with comments made by contemporary musicians. Antonio Salieri, the Viennese Court's Kappelmeister, was highly supportive. Count Carl von Zinzendorf, a shrewd observer of the local operatic scene, was less than enthusiastic. "The music and the decorations are pretty," he wrote, "the rest an unbelievable farce." He did, however, mention that the crowds were huge. The Magic Flute has always been popular, but does that make it a popular opera? The dramatic vehicle assembled by Mozart is hardly a farce. The Queen of the Night is a witch and Sarastro a Mason - this much is clear, even to the uninitiated. In The Magic Flute they are at odds over Pamina's abduction by Sarastro: a theme thoroughly explored in Greek legends of Persephone. Held captive in the realm of the dead - to which the masonic Temple figuratively corresponds - Persephone stands for the magic powers of generation and renewal that Hades holds hostage in his subterranean kingdom. In the revolutionary climate of 18th century Europe, these powers were again needed for a reseeding of the hidden order. But the hermetic Temple, where the King and Queen reign, is not that easily reconstructed. Genius is not always enough where magic is the intended practice.

Impossible Project
Writing in 1829, a Russian critic referred to the art of ballet as an "impossible project"--impossible because it strives "to give an expressive language to body movements," while completely avoiding spoken dialogue. This impossibility generated an anxiety that, no less than the balletic triumphs typically addressed in historiography, has been fuelling ballet's existence to this day. Some critics of ballet, like Leo Tolstoy, were eager to see this art discontinued for good, which indeed could have happened. Impossible Project follows the ballet debates from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, showing that it was the energy of survival, particularly felt by the French-trained ballet masters working in Russia, that turned ballet into something like a religion for its practitioners. The modernist dissent of the early twentieth century only reinforced the near-religious devotion to ballet, which was in turn carried back to the West by Russian ballet figures fleeing from the Revolution and its Soviet aftermath. Ballet--as an art form and an artwork--has always been a corporate operation whose dynamics is impossible to describe in full from a single viewpoint. Impossible Project inspects ballet in the round and explores what its image was in the mind's eye of a hardened balletomane; a nameless corps de ballet danseuse; a politically driven administrator; or a progressive-minded journalist and writer. Author Daria Khitrova puts Russian ballet in the context of the political, religious, and aesthetic debates of its times, and examines it as a changing institution looking from both the wings and the audience.
