Fare Thee Well
A tell-all biography of the epic in-fighting of the Grateful Dead in the years following band leader Jerry Garcia's death in 1995 The Grateful Dead rose to greatness under the inspired leadership of guitarist Jerry Garcia, but the band very nearly died along with him after his sudden death in 1995. So long defined by Garcia's artistic vision, the surviving "Core Four" were reduced to conflicting agendas, strained relationships, and catastrophic business decisions that would lead the iconic band into utter disarray for the next twenty years. Acclaimed music journalist and New York Times bestselling author Joel Selvin was there for much of the turmoil following Garcia's death, and in this book, he offers a never-before-explored insider account of the ebbs and flows that occurred in the decades that followed. Culminating in the landmark tour bearing the same name, Fare Thee Well charts the arduous journey from Garcia's passing all the way up to the uneasy agreement between the Core Four that led to the series of shows celebrating the band's fiftieth anniversary-finally allowing for a proper, and joyous, sendoff of the group revered by so many.
StravinskyHis Thoughts and Music
This book is an attempt at a new interpretation of Stravinsky's thoughts about music and art, an interpretation made in dialogue with the philosophy of new music and 19th-century artistic ideas. It is also a proposal for a new method of analysing the construction of his musical masterpieces (for example a proposal of new formal sound-units: partons with perceptual invariance), a method in-spired by research into cognitive psychology. Furthermore, in the analysis of Stravinsky's music, the author emphasises its connection with the Eastern and Western traditions of European culture and links with Plato's triad of values.
The Rival Sirens
The tale of the onstage fight between prima donnas Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni is notorious, appearing in music histories to this day, but it is a fiction. Starting from this misunderstanding, The Rival Sirens suggests that the rivalry fostered between the singers in 1720s London was in large part a social construction, one conditioned by local theatrical context and audience expectations, and heightened by manipulations of plot and music. This book offers readings of operas by Handel and Bononcini as performance events, inflected by the audience's perceptions of singer persona and contemporary theatrical and cultural contexts. Through examining the case of these two women, Suzanne Aspden demonstrates that the personae of star performers, as well as their voices, were of crucial importance in determining the shape of an opera during the early part of the eighteenth century.
A Baker’s Dozen
"Sarah Cion, an extraordinary pianist, has given us a wonderful collection of Etudes that appeal to all music lovers, both classical and jazz teachers and students. They are pianistically well written for the hand and truly enjoyable to play and listen to.My students love them !" -Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee
Music and Dance in Eastern Africa
This collection of articles cuts across the Eastern African region, with authors interrogating varying themes in different historical periods that speak not only to the practice of music and dance but also to the performances that characterize these practices. The book dedicates itself to research in music and dance, while engaging with colonial and contemporary political and historical realities within the Eastern African region. Inevitably, themes that grapple with urbanization and the emergence of urban spaces for entertainment, as well as the imagination of culture by the colonialist form a key window into the research and understanding of music and dance. The ever-present performance of ethnic identities that shape most of our socio-political contexts adds to the overall texture of this book. At the same time, the debate and question of gender in music and dance is also comprehensively covered, in an attempt to delineate gender relations in the region. Articles that employ a cross-genre approach to music and dance have enriched the wide perspective of understanding African societies and the realities that emanate from everyday lives in Eastern Africa. A useful addition to the growing literature of popular culture in Africa, this book takes a multidisciplinary angle and can easily fit within the disciplines of political science, urban studies, literature, sociology and media studies. The book contributes to the recurrent dialogue towards emphasizing the relevance of the study of songs and dances in a larger context within humanities and social sciences.

Local Dj
Although the surface thread is autobiographical, "Local DJ" is much more an interwoven narrative on Rock 織n Roll culture from the late 織50織s through present times. Perspective is subjectively recounted by one who was both involved with and influential upon the music over an extended period. The presentation is structurally arranged as a mosaic of interrelated stories with substantial personal overview or, as more commonly referenced, "attitude." From the earliest days of Elvis through Z-Rock in the '90's, 'Local DJ" travels through time and space with instinctive grace. Sacramental with sin. A lifeweb spin. "Of all who had a major influence on me while growing up in the Midwest, none matched the audaciousness, tenacity and gonzo-like behavior of Peter Cavanaugh. He was more than just the rock 'n roll guru who gave America its first encounters with The Who, Bob Seger and all the great Detroit bands (Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, MC5, etc.) He was the one who taught me how to go up against the powers-that-be and live to tell all. Thank you, Peter Cavanaugh, for saving a generation of Flint kids from the likes of Pat Boone" ---- MICHAEL MOORE --"Bowling For Columbine"/"Fahrenheit 9/11" Please visit www.wildwednesday.com

Modern Jazz Piano Revealed! An Intermediate Guide to Jazz Concepts, Improvisation, Techniqu
Jazz is a living breathing thing- an entity- and a growing energy all its own. I'm excitedto present the building blocks that provide the foundation for jazz improvisation. Thisbook is geared toward the student who has already achieved an intermediate level ofsight-reading and technical facility, but who has had limited exposure to jazz along theway.I believe this book provides an entree into the world of harmony, rhythm, and improvisation.I started to write this book because of all the students I've taught over the years.Time and time again, I see their faces light up as I explain the basic concepts of intervals,7th chords, harmonic progressions and the symmetrical nature of the 12-tone scale. That process of discovery has continued to inspire me throughout the years. I continueto have the pleasure of watching my students discover the wonder and joys of hearingand playing jazz; this is what led me to put into book form some of the concepts thatallowed me to make these wonderful discoveries myself. Each concept is offered herewith an explanation, exercises, and practical tools for the student to work with. This bookshould supplement working with a jazz piano teacher, because nothing replaces the experienceof listening, imitating and receiving personal guidance on the path. And keep inmind that the most important thing to do as you learn to play jazz is to listen, listen, listen!

Lost Delta Found
Blues Hall of Fame Inductee-Named a "Classic of Blues Literature" by the Blues Foundation, 2019 This remarkable book recovers three invaluable perspectives, long thought to have been lost, on the culture and music of the Mississippi Delta. In 1941 and '42 African American schol-ars from Fisk University-among them the noted composer and musicologist John W. Work III, sociologist Lewis Wade Jones, and graduate student Samuel C. Adams Jr.-joined folklorist Alan Lomax of the Library of Congress on research trips to Coahoma County, Mississippi. Their mis-sion was "to document adequately the cul-tural and social backgrounds for music in the community." Among the fruits of the project were the earliest recordings by the legendary blues singer and guitar-ist Muddy Waters. The hallmark of the study was to have been a joint publica-tion of its findings by Fisk and the Library of Congress. While this publication was never completed, Lost Delta Found is com-posed of the writings, interviews, notes, and musical transcriptions produced by Work, Jones, and Adams in the Coahoma County study. Their work captures, with compelling immediacy, a place, a people, a way of life, and a set of rich musical tra-ditions as they existed in the 1940s. Illustrated with photos and more than 160 musical transcriptions.
New York and the International Sound of Latin Music, 1940-1990
New York City has long been a generative nexus for the transnational Latin music scene. Currently, there is no other place in the Americas where such large numbers of people from throughout the Caribbean come together to make music. In this book, Benjamin Lapidus seeks to recognize all of those musicians under one mighty musical sound, especially those who have historically gone unnoticed. Based on archival research, oral histories, interviews, and musicological analysis, Lapidus examines how interethnic collaboration among musicians, composers, dancers, instrument builders, and music teachers in New York City set a standard for the study, creation, performance, and innovation of Latin music. Musicians specializing in Spanish Caribbean music in New York cultivated a sound that was grounded in tradition, including classical, jazz, and Spanish Caribbean folkloric music. For the first time, Lapidus studies this sound in detail and in its context. He offers a fresh understanding of how musicians made and formally transmitted Spanish Caribbean popular music in New York City from 1940 to 1990. Without diminishing the historical facts of segregation and racism the musicians experienced, Lapidus treats music as a unifying force. By giving recognition to those musicians who helped bridge the gap between cultural and musical backgrounds, he recognizes the impact of entire ethnic groups who helped change music in New York. The study of these individual musicians through interviews and musical transcriptions helps to characterize the specific and identifiable New York City Latin music aesthetic that has come to be emulated internationally.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young
The first and most complete narrative biography of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, by acclaimed music journalist and Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne"Riveting." -People Magazine"This is one of the great rock and roll stories." -New York Times Book Review Even in the larger-than-life world of rock and roll, it was hard to imagine four more different men. Yet few groups were as in sync with their times as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Starting with the original trio's landmark 1969 debut album, their group and individual songs-"Wooden Ships," "Ohio," "For What It's Worth" (with Stills and Young's Buffalo Springfield)-became the soundtrack of a generation. But their story would rarely be as harmonious as their legendary vocal blend. Over the decades, these four men would continually break up, reunite, and disband again-all against a backdrop of social and musical change, recurring disagreements, and self-destructive tendencies that threatened to cripple them as a group and as individuals. In Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: The Wild, Definitive Saga of Rock's Greatest Supergroup, Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne presents the ultimate deep diveinto rock and roll's most musical and turbulent brotherhood. Featuring exclusive interviewswith band members, colleagues, fellow superstars, former managers, employees, and lovers-and with access to unreleased music and documents-this is the sweepingstory of rock's longest-running, most dysfunctional, yet pre-eminent musical family, delivered with the epic feel their story rightly deserves.

The Other Worlds of Hector Berlioz
Berlioz frequently explored other worlds in his writings, from the imagined exotic enchantments of New Zealand to the rings of Saturn where Beethoven's spirit was said to reside. The settings for his musical works are more conservative, and his adventurousness has instead been located in his mastery of the orchestra, as both orchestrator and conductor. Inge van Rij's book takes a new approach to Berlioz's treatment of the orchestra by exploring the relationship between these two forms of control - the orchestra as abstract sound, and the orchestra as collective labour and instrumental technology. Van Rij reveals that the negotiation between worlds characteristic of Berlioz's writings also plays out in his music: orchestral technology may be concealed or ostentatiously displayed; musical instruments might be industrialised or exoticised; and the orchestral musicians themselves move between being a society of distinctive individuals and being a machine played by Berlioz himself.
Jacques Offenbach and the Making of Modern Culture
Offenbach's operas were a significant force for cultural change, both in his own time and in the decades to follow. In this book, Laurence Senelick demonstrates the ways in which this musical phenomenon took hold globally, with Offenbach's work offering an alternative, irreverent, sexualized view of life which audiences found liberating, both personally and socially. In the theatre, the composer also inspired cutting-edge innovations in stagecraft and design, and in this book, he is recognized as a major cultural influence, with an extensive impact on the spheres of literature, art, film, and even politics. Senelick argues that Offenbach's importance spread far beyond France, and that his provocative and entertaining works, often seen as being more style than substance, influenced numerous key artists, writers, and thinkers, and made a major contribution to the development of modern society.
Save the Beatles!
The Beatles made music within a virtuous circle, together reaching heights that none of them could alone. Then, in a flash, that circle collapsed, and the solo years which followed were patchy, indeed. But a secret has been hiding in plain sight ever since: John, Paul, George and Ringo still could have elevated each other from afar by recording separately and releasing together. Amazingly, even after all these years, we can reanimate their famous chemistry and catch a glimpse of what they might have released in the 70s.Sure, every Beatles fan has made a playlist of favorite solo tracks, but THAT is not THIS. The trick is to combine the right music - which isn't necessarily the most familiar - then sequence it the way George Martin might have. The result is seven thrilling "new" Beatles albums that you simply must hear to believe.

Thin Lizzy
Thin Lizzy emerged as a four-piece in Dublin as the 1960s drew to a close, when guitarist Eric Bell and keyboard player Eric Wrixon, both from Belfast, encountered a band named Orphanage, which included Dubliners Brian Downey on drums and charismatic front man Philip Lynott. Evolving through a number of incarnations, through psychedelic power trio through classic four-piece guitar-toting rockers, to a quintet of heavy metal heroes, with the ever-present Lynott and Downey at its core, Thin Lizzy rose to become one of the most powerful and iconic rock bands in Europe, before the erosive effects of the rock'n'roll lifestyle took their toll. The purpose of this book is to present a history of the band through its music - to cover every song released through official channels, presented in context, including an overview of its content. From the difficult early years of the early 1970s, which did produce the surprise hit single 'Whisky In The Jar', via their breakthrough album Jailbreak and the heavy rock excesses of the early 80s, this book follows the evolution of Thin Lizzy and its stellar cast of guitarists, from start to finish through their music, track by glorious track.

Rap DadA Story of Family and the Subculture That Shaped a Generation
This timely reflection on male identity in America that explores the intersection of fatherhood, race, and hip-hop culture "is a page-turner...drenched in history and encompasses the energy, fire, and passion that is hip-hop" (D. Watkins, New York Times bestselling author). Just as his music career was taking off, Juan Vidal received life-changing news: he'd soon be a father. Throughout his life, neglectful men were the norm--his own dad struggled with drug addiction and infidelity--a cycle that, inevitably, wrought Vidal with insecurity. At age twenty-six, with barely a grip on life, what lessons could he possibly offer a kid? Determined to alter the course for his child, Vidal did what he'd always done when confronted with life's challenges--he turned to the counterculture. In Rap Dad, the musician-turned-journalist takes a thoughtful and inventive approach to exploring identity and examining how today's society views fatherhood. To root out the source of his fears around parenting, Vidal revisits the flash points of his juvenescence, a feat that transports him, a first-generation American born to Colombian parents, back to the drug-fueled streets of 1980s-90s Miami. It's during those pivotal years that he's drawn to skateboarding, graffiti, and the music of rebellion: hip-hop. As he looks to the past for answers, he infuses his personal story with rap lyrics and interviews with some of pop culture's most compelling voices--plenty of whom have proven to be some of society's best, albeit nontraditional, dads. Along the way, Vidal confronts the unfair stereotypes that taint urban men--especially Black and Latino men. "A heartfelt examination of the damage that wayward fathers can leave in their wake" (The Washington Post), Rap Dad is "rich with symbolism...a poetic chronicle of beats, rhymes, and life" (NPR).

The KumulipoTheKumulipoA Hawaiian Creation Chant - A History of the Mythology, Folklore an
Beckwith examines the culture and folklore surrounding the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant which vividly narrates the creation of the world and the first humans. The Kumulipo is rich in references to other creation lore of Hawaii, invoking its Gods and rituals, and the society and culture of the Hawaiian Islands. Before she proceeds to translate and narrate the actual text, Martha Warren Beckwith begins this book with a description of Hawaiian life. Its hierarchical culture; the customs and taboos surrounding first-born males of the chieftains; and the dynastic lineages which presided over Honolulu, with the monarchs responsible for uniting the biggest isle with those around it. The result was a relatively homogenous culture, with a unified mythology and belief system.By the time Western visitors reached Hawaii and began to transcribe its mythos in the 18th century, it was essentially a single culture. The chant of the Kumulipo represents not only a summation of the mythologies and creation lore of the Hawaiian isles, but also the unification of its people. We explore notions of how the lands, seas and first peoples were made, the mighty creatures of antiquity, and concepts like the serene stillness of nature forming the conditions for Gods and men to enter existence.
D’Angelo’s Voodoo
Voodoo, D'Angelo's much-anticipated 2000 release, set the standard for the musical cycle ordained as "neo-soul," a label the singer and songwriter would reject more than a decade later. The album is a product of heightened emotions and fused sensibilities; an amalgam of soul, rock, jazz, gospel, hip-hop, and Afrobeats. D'Angelo put to music his own pleasures and insecurities as a man-child in the promised land. It was both a tribute to his musical heroes: Prince, Sly Stone, Marvin Gaye, J Dilla...and a deconstruction of rhythm and blues itself. Despite nearly universal acclaim, the sonic expansiveness of Voodoo proved too nebulous for airplay on many radio stations, seeping outside the accepted lines of commercial R&B music. Voodoo was Black, it was definitely magic, and it was nearly overshadowed by a four-minute music video featuring D'Angelo's sweat-glistened six-pack abs. "The Video" created an accentuated moment when the shaman lost control of the spell he cast.
Silence!
This book argues that British working-class urban culture was silenced in the period 1900 - 1950 and that the effects of this are still felt. The agencies of this silencing were state education, the BBC Radio and the commercialisation of working class cultural institutions (from 1850). The effects in my own life are picked up from the fifties onwards and some of the fightback against the hegemony of silencing is shown often with graphic pages. The style is a cross between lecture slides and Zine! So a lot of mini posters, and graphic pages. It follows on from previous work but includes new research and new formulations to explore the relation between class oppression and culture. It should be more accessible than previous works."What does it feel like for a whole class to collectively loose its voice? Stefan Szczelkun's Silence! is a careful tracking of the ways in which working class culture has been oppressed and is a call to arms to actively find ways for working class culture to re-find its voice. Through autobiographical storytelling and historical research Silence! is essential reading for those who are interested in challenging the hegemony of middle class cultural institutions and reasserting autonomous working class culture." Sweet Bitter BluesWashington, DC’s Homemade Blues
Sweet Bitter Blues: Washington, DC's Homemade Blues depicts the life and times of harmonica player Phil Wiggins and the unique, vibrant music scene around him, as described by music journalist Frank Matheis. Featuring Wiggins's story, but including information on many musicians, the volume presents an incomparable documentary of the African American blues scene in Washington, DC, from 1975 to the present. At its core, the DC-area acoustic "down home" blues scene was and is rooted in the African American community. A dedicated group of musicians saw it as their mission to carry on their respective Piedmont musical traditions: Mother Scott, Flora Molton, Chief Ellis, Archie Edwards, John Jackson, John Cephas, and foremost Phil Wiggins. Because of their love for the music and willingness to teach, these creators fostered a harmonious environment, mostly centered on Archie Edwards's famous barbershop where Edwards opened his doors every Saturday afternoon for jam sessions.Sweet Bitter Blues features biographies and supporting essays based on Wiggins's recollections and supplemented by Matheis's research, along with a foreword by noted blues scholar Elijah Wald, historic interviews by Dr. Barry Lee Pearson with John Cephas and Archie Edwards, and previously unpublished and rare photographs. This is the story of an acoustic blues scene that was and is a living tradition.

Knoxville Music Before Bluegrass
Since colonial times, generations of families from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England have settled in Knoxville and East Tennessee. Early on, they arrived with ballads, stories, instruments, and folk music from their former homes. "Songcatchers," including Francis James Child, Olive Dame Campbell, Maud Pauline Karpeles, Cecil J. Sharp, William Francis Allen, Lucy McKim Garrison, Charles Pickard Ware, and George Pullen Jackson, journeyed deep into the remotest areas of East Tennessee to capture their songs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This music existed almost unchanged until the introduction of commercial recording and radio broadcasting in the 1920s. The historic recording sessions in Bristol, Tennessee, in the summer of 1927 sparked new genres of music, and through the contribution of musicians like Lester Flatt, Josh Graves, Dolly Parton, Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, and many others, Knoxville and East Tennessee are acknowledged for the roles they played in the birth of country and bluegrass music.
Deadheads Remember Englishtown '77
Deadheads may disagree on which Grateful Dead concert was their best ever, but no one would argue that their performance at Englishtown on Sept. 3, 1977, was something special. For Jim Daley, who saw the band for the first time on that date, it was a life-changing experience that he looks back on with fondness more than forty years later. Like many others, he does n't remember much about that day ... but he sure does remember the music. In this tribute to the band he loves so much, the author commemorates the landmark concert by sharing memories from those who were there.Together, the tapestry of recollections reveals a detailed picture of what that day was like, and why it was a defining moment for the band. Some people remember the day quite vividly, while others are a little foggy on details. For most people, however, the music is at the forefront of their recollections. Discover what it was really like on that hot, humid day at Raceway Park in Old Bridge, New Jersey, and how - at least for the day - the Grateful Dead got everything "Just exactly perfect".
