The Art of Mary Linwood
The Art of Mary Linwoodis the first book on Leicester textile artist Mary Linwood (1755-1845) and catalogue of her work.When British textile artist and gallery owner Mary Linwood died in 1845 just shy of 90 years old, her estate was worth the equivalent of 瞿5,199,822 in today's currency. As someone who made, but did not sell, embroidered replicas of famous artworks after artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, Stubbs, and Morland, how did she accumulate so much money? A pioneering woman in the male-dominated art world of late Georgian Britain, Linwood established her own London gallery in 1798 that featured copies of well-known paintings by these popular artists. Featuring props and specially designed rooms for her replicas, she ensured that her visitors had an entertaining, educational, and kinetic tour, similar to what Madame Tussaud would do one generation later. The gallery's focus on picturesque painters provided her London visitors with an idyllic imaginary journey through the countryside. Its emphasis on quintessentially British artists provided a unifying focus for a country that had recently emerged from the threat of Napoleonic invasion.This book brings to the fore Linwood's gallery guides and previously unpublished letters to her contemporaries, such as Birmingham inventor Matthew Boulton and Queen Charlotte. It also includes the first and only catalogue of Linwood's extant and destroyed works. By examining Linwood's replicas and their accompanying objects through the lens of material culture, the book provides a much-needed contribution to the scholarship on women and cultural agency in the early 19th century.

Kandis Williams: A Surface
The first museum survey for artist, writer and publisher Kandis Williams, whose cross-disciplinary practice delineates issues surrounding race, nationalism and authorityAmerican artist Kandis Williams works across collage, sculpture, film, performance, writing, pedagogy and publishing. Her multidisciplinary practice leverages the experience of the body alongside personal and communal histories to explore and challenge notions of race, nationalism, authority and eroticism, among other subjects. Her meticulously compiled collages are densely layered, both in structure--through repetition of forms and figures--and in content, with an emphasis on politically loaded and libidinal images. Often inspired by history painting, these works are composed of images culled from magazines and archival texts, placed into an unsettling interplay. Williams considers these collages as a disintegration of photographic value into layered schematics. Similarly, Williams' performance practice explores coded social choreographies, emphasizing structural and systemic violence. In her performances, disembodied segments of text become collages, making up scripts for her performers. Through this process she proposes what she calls experimental pedagogy, a "consumption of academic texts that have a non-discursive output, an affective output that mythifies--weaving what kinds of knowledge are immediately relatable to an individual with the creation of a paradigm of thought."A Surface is Williams' first museum survey, offering visitors an in-depth experience of her vision and practice. The exhibition features both important and lesser-known works from the past decade of her career.Kandis Williams was born in 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. She studied at the Cooper Union School of Art. In 2016 she cofounded Cassandra Press, a publishing and educational platform that produces and distributes Black scholarship. She is currently a visiting faculty member at California Institute of the Arts.
Taos Society of Artists
Over a century ago, a group of painters dreamed of establishing an artists' colony in the village of Taos, New Mexico, and succeeded beyond their wildest imaginings. Founded in 1915 and disbanded in 1927, the Taos Society of Artists promoted painting that embraced the landscape of the Southwest and the local Pueblo and Hispanic people. Joseph Beuys and History

"Tell me who your enemies are, so that I can help you to hate them." This was a favorite line of the Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins (1894-1973), and likely how she greeted Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) at their first meeting, at the opening of an exhibition of her work in 1943. The clandestine love affair that burned between these two artists for the remainder of the decade was fueled not only by romantic passion but also by a deep appreciation of each other's work. Some of the greatest of Martins's Surrealist sculptures were inspired by her relationship with Duchamp--including Impossible, whose title perhaps refers to their situation. (Martins was married to the Brazilian ambassador to the United States.) And it was during their affair that Duchamp--widely believed to have "retired" from art--secretly began his astonishing final work, which would be revealed only after his death. This work, the sculptural tableau ?tant donn矇s, was heavily influenced by Martins: it takes formal cues from her work, and it was she who modeled for the startlingly realistic nude at its center. This surprising story--highly readable yet meticulously researched, and abundantly illustrated with artworks and archival images--will affirm the importance of Maria Martins's tropically inflected Surrealism and challenge the perception of Duchamp as a purely cool and cerebral artist.

Gainsborough's Hon. Frances Duncombe
New volume in the Frick Diptych series features an illuminating essay by Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Aimee Ng paired with a contribution by fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi.Innumerable pearls line the blue satin dress of the Honorable Frances Duncombe, who wears a bright red jewel on her chest, possibly a ruby or garnet. Frances was raised by her stepmother in the house of the Earl of Radnor and was betrothed to the earl's eldest son. However, her engagement was broken off when the family discovered her affair with a John Bowater, whom she married in 1778. Exactly when and why this monumental portrait was commissioned from Gainsborough is unknown. After spending some years living in Germany (rumored to have had an affair with Archduke Maximilian Franz, brother of the French queen, Marie Antoinette), Frances returned to England and lived with this portrait in her family home, Old Dalby Hall, in Leicestershire, until her death, in 1827.Mizrahi's creative contribution adds greatly to this book about this iconic painting of a fashionable lady. He mentions the moment of first catching a glimpse of the work when seeing it unframed. "I gasp. Frances Duncombe looks every bit as gorgeous unframed, if not even more so for the vulnerability."
