Examines Picasso's engagement with printmaking, highlighting how different media inspired his creativity and exploring his artistic lineage.Printmaking was a vitally important activity in the long artistic career of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). His long-standing, if at times episodic, engagement with printmaking, stretched from his early years in Paris until his old age. This book explores how the technical challenges of working in different print media (etching, aquatint, linocut and lithography) inspired Picasso's creativity.Together with a stunning selection of works on paper by Picasso, it also includes sculptures, drawings and prints by other artists and cultures of the kind that inspired Picasso. His prints often demonstrate his keen sense of belonging to an artistic lineage stretching back to antiquity (stemming from his kinship with the Mediterranean world of his birthplace, M獺laga), as well as great artists of the past such as Raphael, Rembrandt and Ingres. Caravaggio's Cupid
A Caravaggio "first", this accessible and attractive illustrated volume focuses on one of the famous artist's most iconic artworks, Victorious Cupid.Usually housed at the Gem瓣ldegalerie in Berlin, Victorious Cupid (1601-02) by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) is the centrepiece in a new focus exhibition at The Wallace Collection. Caravaggio's painting, also known as Amor Vincit Omnia, shows Cupid, the Roman god of desire, as a young boy, in an animated pose while wearing dark eagle wings and holding two arrows. It was the last allegorical work Caravaggio painted in Rome. The music manuscript on the floor shows a large V in the margin of the right-hand page which is believed to acknowledges Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani (1564-1537), who commissioned the painting, and is said to have prized Victorious Cupid above all other works in his collection.This richly illustrated softcover print publication features an introduction by the director of The Wallace Collection, Xavier Bray, followed by five illustrated chapters by the volume's principal author, Helen Langdon. A description of the painting and summary of Caravaggio's early life, present Victorious Cupid against the background of his artistic development and the intellectual interests of his patrons, and within the broader context of the theme of "love conquers all". Langdon examines the meaning of the painting, and considers how Caravaggio brings the subject to earth, from the heavens to the bedroom, mocking the idealisations of renaissance art.Publication accompanies an exhibition at The Wallace Collection, London.

Flying with Wax Wings
A necessary contemporary reframing of a classic nineteenth-century artist. Josef M獺nes (1820-71) was a creator on whom the Czech revivalist society placed its hopes for the creation of a national art. M獺nes was a painter, draftsman, decorator, author of models for applied art and architecture, and an enfant terrible of the domestic art scene. A disgraced artist but an entertaining companion, he was idealized and profaned in various cultural and political contexts. This volume offers a new perspective on a canonized figure, broadened by the varied voices and approaches of collective authors. Flying with Wax Wings explores the many depictions of M獺nes, the result of the research of a collective of authors whose aim was to introduce the key personality of nineteenth-century Czech art in the context of contemporary European art and from the current position of today's art history. The result is, strangely enough, the first monograph on Josef M獺nes that does not present a distorted picture of his life and work.

From Duchamp to Bourgeois, Harrison's curation of 20th-century sculpture looks at the study of the human bodyGuided by a desire to illuminate and inspire reflection on the sculptural form, Dominique L矇vy of LGDR invited American artist Rachel Harrison (born 1966) to curate a presentation of 20th-century sculpture. The exhibition that emerged comprises a group of works that consider Modernism's devotion to that most fundamental of subjects: the human figure.Stage Fright features works by Louise Bourgeois, Constantin Br璽ncusi, Marcel Duchamp, Marisol, Alberto Giacometti and Alina Szapocznikow that represent the body in extremis--shown ruptured in pieces or pared down to the essentials. The individual pieces act as surrogates that stand in for the whole. Taken together, the works on view embody various conceptions of personhood as routed through objects, whether rendered with aching specificity, as in the clefts and folds of Szapocznikow's plaster Ventre (Belly) (1968), or invoked as a generic type, as in Marisol's totemic couple The Blacks (1962). Richly illustrated with installation views from the exhibition, Stage Fright features a new text by Harrison--framed as a dialogue between filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock and figure skater Peggy Fleming--that critically examines the presentation and the artist's own practice and approach.

It takes a detailed look at Gustave Caillebotte's history and career, placing his pictorial work in the context of his family, social and economic environment, for the life of Gustave Caillebotte is above all a lesson in history and geography, that of the Parisian bourgeoisie under the Second Empire and the blossoming of the Impressionist movement in the Ile-de-France region. The biography describes Gustave's father Martial Caillebotte's meteoric rise in the textile industry, his education and pictorial training in Bonnat's studio and at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, his participation in the 1870 war at the age of 22, and his decisive encounter with the Impressionist group, led by Renoir, Monet and Degas. Thanks in particular to family archives, the book revisits Caillebotte's decisive role in the diffusion of the movement, including the organization of the group's third exhibition, as well as the genesis and presentation of his own works, including the famous Raboteur.

Oudemans' immigrated to Canada after WWII where upon arrival, she and her husband travelled east to New Brunswick. Nel Oudemans became a well known and respected weaving instructor at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. By way of her weaving, as well as through her volunteer work and teaching, Nel Oudemans played a significant role in igniting a passion for hand-weaving in New Brunswick during the later part of the 20th century. In this book, the story of Nel Oudemans' life is woven together with those of other artists, educators and entrepreneurs from Atlantic Canada who, together, were part of a vibrant period in the artistic development of textiles the region. The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation established the Nel Oudemans Award in 2002. It is gifted annually, in honour of the esteemed weaver, to an emerging New Brunswick artist in recognition of artistic excellence.With the long-awaited publication of this book, Nel Oudemans' story is being celebrated for the first time in print.

Di Pietro resurrects the corpus of Paul Thek, while sourcing inspiration as to what his practice might have become today In developing an exhibition that places his own sculptures in dialogue with those of Paul Thek (1933-88), artist Alessandro Di Pietro (born 1987) imagines what the late artist's career could have resembled had he not died at such a young age. To create these speculative works, Di Pietro sourced original writings on himself and Thek--essays, WhatsApp messages, diary entries and newspaper articles--from 25 authors, providing the intellectual context for Thek and Di Pietro's intertwined ideas. If art is what, in the words of John Sloan, makes life worth living, then we should do our best to create it, experience it, and sustain it. It is our great pleasure to present in these pages the first five years of visual art published in Chestnut Review. Art has been an important part of the magazine since its founding, and we are proud of the 77 visual artists who first agreed to have their work published, and here republished, by us. Their images enrich our pages, inspire our imaginations, and feed our emotions.As we considered how best to celebrate this body of work, however, we realized that simply presenting the art again was insufficient. So we asked a select group of 36 Chestnut staff and friends to each adopt an art piece and to write a response to it. Thus, every single one of these pieces have inspired unique acts of contemplation and creation. These writers, credited with each piece that they chose, took on this task with a contagious sense of excitement that made all the work to put the volume together worthwhile.Their responses represent a wide spectrum of genres and sub-genres, from art appreciation prose pieces to poetry, creative nonfiction to short fiction. And each, of course, is a view into the particular writer's engagement with the art that spoke to them.
