Ludovic Nkoth: What If

Ingram 出版
2024/12/20 出版

Nkoth's affectionate and dynamic portraits of Black subjects reclaim the legacy of the African diaspora in a French exhibition hall"It's important to acknowledge the conversation you're participating in...and also remembering that this conversation wasn't always open to everyone," says painter Ludovic Nkoth (born 1994) of his artistic practice. "Paint isn't neutral." Based in New York but born in Cameroon, Nkoth creates fluid and intimate portraits of Black subjects are all inspired by the country of his birth. His scenes capture the private lives of his subjects, in moments of thought, rest and recreation, inviting the viewer to imagine alternative narratives surrounding images of the Black experience. These paintings carried a special significance when they were exhibited within the Fondation Le Corbusier - Maison La Roche, a gallery intended for a collection of 20th-century abstract art, whose most famous figures borrowed the language of African art but assigned little merit to its creators.

Louis Fratino: Satura

Ingram 出版
2024/12/20 出版

Fratino's tender portraiture and intimate interiors evoke his own associations with the Italian landscape and cultural traditionThis volume presents a selection of work from American painter Louis Fratino, centered on his relationship with Italy, one of the artist's main cultural contexts of reference and a perspective through which to view both his artistic and his personal experience. His works evoke the landscapes, people and cultural context that animate the artist's everyday life, creating intense and erotically charged atmospheres. Alongside paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures from the last decade, Satura includes new works providing a thorough investigation of the artist's practice. The title Satura comes from the Latin meaning of the word, referring to lanx satura, a dish filled with first fruits intended for the gods, from which descended a literary genre characterized by a variety of styles. In Italian, satura translates to "saturated" or "filled." Both Latin and Italian meanings resonate well with the richness and formal feast of Fratino's art.Louis Fratino was born in Maryland in 1993 and received his BFA in Painting with concentration in Illustration from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He is currently featured in the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Stranieri Ovunque--Foreigners Everywhere, curated by Adriano Pedrosa. His work is included in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the RISD Museum, Providence; and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Fratino lives and works in Brooklyn.

Cauleen Smith: Breaking Cinema

Ingram 出版
2024/12/20 出版

A compact introduction to Cauleen Smith's experimental, imaginative films incorporating science fiction, Afrofuturism and contemporary Chicago cultureSince making her first feature while a student at UCLA, Los Angeles-based artist Cauleen Smith (born 1967) has rooted her work firmly within the discourse of mid-20th-century experimental film. Drawing from structuralism, moving images and science fiction (combined with elements of the more recent Afrofuturist movement), her works offer a phenomenological experience for both its participants and its audience. A portable, introductory volume, Breaking Cinema is a quick yet thorough guide to Smith's filmmaking. It features stills from a decade of works, including Space Is the Place (her tribute to the Sun Ra Arkestra), Remote Viewing and Lessons in Semaphore. Art historian Romi Crawford, professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, elucidates this critical phase of the artist's career, and how Smith recasts film history in the context of the artistic and cultural ferment of Chicago's South Side.

Wassily Kandinsky

Larry,Warsh  著
Princeton 出版
2024/12/20 出版

A revelatory collection of the artist's sketches and preparatory drawings, featuring many that have never been published before The great Russian modernist painter and theorist Wassily Kandinsky was one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. Few documents provide more insight into his evolution from figural to abstract art--or into the development of abstraction in the early twentieth century--than the pages of his sketchbooks. Featuring previously unpublished drawings, Wassily Kandinsky: The Sketchbooks is a comprehensive selection of hundreds of sketches from twelve notebooks Kandinsky kept between 1889 and 1935. Beginning with early figure studies, architectural sketches, and landscapes, the notebooks reveal a process of exploration that would lead Kandinsky from his first experiments in geometric abstraction to paintings that reshaped modernism. Demonstrating Kandinsky's mastery of color, line, shape, composition, and movement, the book includes notes and preparatory studies for major paintings, such as the "analytical drawing" for Composition VII (1913), the first study for Several Circles (1926), and Study for Composition IX, a preliminary working of his 1936 masterpiece. Visually stunning, the book offers a remarkable, intimate look at how Kandinsky sought to discover nothing less than a spiritually transcendent form of art.

Chagall

2024/12/19 出版

Featuring 100 works from throughout Chagall's career, this dazzling exhibition catalog focuses on the artist's engagement with life's most primal and universal themes. Steeped in tradition yet alive with imagination, Chagall's enormous body of work reflects a profound connection to cultural roots and to the boundless possibilities of creative expression. This monograph brings fresh eyes to the most relevant aspects of Chagall's oeuvre. It traces how, over eight decades, Chagall responded to his contemporaries' experimentations with cubism, fauvism, and surrealism by creating his own visual language. It offers a lively examination of overarching themes--love and romance; Jewish tradition and history; spirituality and the daily life, based on memory and nostalgia--and the ways they are reflected through repetition and variation over the years. And it reveals how Chagall's flexible use of symbols contributes to build a fantastic cosmos grounded on the "logic of the illogical".Readers will come to understand how Chagall was essentially a storyteller with an enormous gift for color and line, and a narrative artist who understood the power of symbolism in his own terms.

The Maisel's Murals, 1939

Ingram 出版
2024/12/19 出版

The murals fronting the entrance of Skip Maisel's Indian Jewelry and Crafts store at 510 Central Avenue SW in Albuquerque, New Mexico are a treasure of Native American painting and are of national importance. They represent some of the earliest and finest paintings by a seminal group of Southwestern native artists. Commissioned in 1939 by the store's founder, Maurice Maisel, the grandfather of the current owner, the murals are an extraordinary expression of fine arts, rarely seen on a commercial building. Despite their prominence on the building's fa癟ade, a fixture in downtown Albuquerque, they are essentially hidden in plain sight. The murals' subject matter demonstrates a unifying thematic context. Through the use of paired opposites, cultural themes and subjects can be compared and contrasted. In addition, the stylistic differences between artists, while showing the strong influence of training at "The Studio" art program at the Santa Fe Indian School established by Dorothy Dunn, they also demonstrate considerable differences in execution. The Maisel's building was designed by legendary New Mexico architect John Gaw Meem, popularizer of the Santa Fe Style. Meem hired well known Santa Fe artist Olive Rush for a total of $1,500 to paint the murals. She then hired eleven Native Americans to undertake the project and saw to it that they were paid a fair wage. Maisel's was to be Rush's last Native American project and she clearly wished the project to be a culmination statement of the mural work she had been engaged in with The Studio for nearly a decade. To that end, she included artists of varying ages, from forty-four year old Awa Tsireh of the first generation of Pueblo painters, to sixteen year old Popovi Da, a beginning Studio painter and the son of famous potters Maria and Julian Martinez, as well as including representatives of three principal Native American cultures in the Southwest: Pueblo, Navajo and Apache.

Google, Volume 2

Bem,West  著
Jbe Books 出版
2024/12/18 出版

An updated visual dictionary through the eyes of Google ImagesIn 2014, JBE Books and King Zog members Felix Heyes and Ben West published Google, Volume 1, using the dictionary and its 21,110 words as the basis for a visual compendium of the English language. The words and definitions have disappeared, replaced by the first result for each word on Google Images--the most widespread and comprehensive visual identification tool on the Internet, which is supposed to offer (as a founding principle) the most relevant and interesting images to our textual searches. Now, 10 years later, Google, Volume 2 provides an updated snapshot of what the world looks like through the eyes of Google Images. It asks: what is the most relevant image for each word in the dictionary--today? What is the most relevant image for a given word now, and will it remain the same in 2034? Flipping through the textless pages, one can see the evolution of our visual language in concert with our written one. Like its predecessor, Google, Volume 2 will be printed in a limited edition, making this eye-catching volume a true collector's item.

Daniel Crews-Chubb - Out of Chaos

2024/12/17 出版

Highlights Daniel Crews-Chubb's mixed-media paintings that explore the human condition through figuration, abstraction, and diverse cultural references.Daniel Crews-Chubb (b.1984) is a London-based painter whose mixed-media works wrestle with the human condition and modes of self-expression. This monograph, Out of Chaos, is published to coincide with his solo exhibition at Timothy Taylor, New York, which brings together new paintings and works on paper. Crews-Chubb's paintings exist somewhere between figuration and abstraction. They draw on a wide variety of references, including ancient cosmologies, historic artefacts, and sculpture, pre-Columbian deities, Cubism, Abstract Expressionism, and Hellenic myth. He intertwines canonical sources and classical allusions in his paintings, creating a highly personal, idiosyncratic lexicon of human, celestial, and bestial figures.Out of Chaos takes its title from the ancient Greek notion that chaos is a state of undifferentiated matter from which the universe emerged. The paintings that form this series feature urgent, gestural marks and passages of vivid color, centred around the figure as a motif. The bodies that he depicts are ageless, non-gendered, and non-racial-- conduits for feeling, rather than signifiers of individuals. This publication reproduces a selection of Crews-Chubb's paintings from 2015 to 2024, starting with his early works and subsequently organised into seven series. Notable among these are the recent Immortals (2022-) and Out of Chaos, which is the focal point of his solo exhibition. The book also features an introduction by the writer Jennifer Higgie, an essay by art historian Matthew Holman, and an interview with writer Amah-Rose Abrams. Higgie considers Crews-Chubb's exploration of the human condition and the role of spirituality in it. In his essay "Death, the World and All Our Woe", Holman expands on the artist's references to myth and religion, describing him as a "creator who annihilates". Holman contextualises Crews-Chubb in an art-historical lineage, considering his work alongside that of Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, and Willem de Kooning. In an in-depth interview, Crews-Chubb and Abrams delve into the artist's time at art college, the development of his painting technique and the relationship between the past and present in his work. The book is edited by Matt Price and Lada Sorokopud, designed by Import/Export, and published by Anomie Publishing, London, in association with Timothy Taylor and Roberts Projects, Los Angeles. Daniel Crews-Chubb was born in Northampton in 1984. He completed his BA at Chelsea College of Arts, London, in 2009 and undertook the Turps Studio Programme, London, in 2013. He lives and works in London. His first solo museum exhibition will take place at the Long Museum, Shanghai, in November 2024.

Marcel Broodthaers and Film

Ingram 出版
2024/12/17 出版

Marcel Broodthaers, one of the key figures of the postwar avant-garde, has been recognized and extensively studied as a poet who became a visual artist in 1964. However, years before creating his first sculptural objects and installations, Broodthaers made his debut as a filmmaker in 1957 with La Clef de l'horloge, embarking on a prolific cinema practice that yielded more than fifty films shot on 35mm and 16mm. Cinema, both as a medium and principle, was crucial to his artistry. Broodthaers' writings and visual works are interspersed with allusions to cinema, its history and its technology. Covering both well-known titles such as Le Corbeau et le renard (1967), La Pluie (1969), and Une Seconde d'矇ternit矇 (1970) as well as many lesser-known Broodthaers films, the essays in this book discuss his films as inseparable from his entire oeuvre while situating them in the larger history of experimental film. In addition, the book scrutinizes his experiments with cinepoetry and expanded cinema, as well as his interest in early cinema and his fascination with signs and inscriptions. Contributors: Andrew Chesher, Eric C. H. de Bruyn, Xavier Garc穩a-Bard籀n, Charlotte Friling, Steven Jacobs, Bruce Jenkins, Deborah Schultz, Christophe Wall-Romana, and Raf Wollaert

Minami Kobayashi

2024/12/17 出版

Minami Kobayashi's The Song of Jujubes showcases surreal paintings exploring memory, nostalgia, and belonging.Minami Kobayashi (b.1989) is a Japanese artist based in London. Covering a significant period of development in her practice as a painter, this publication coincides with her second major solo exhibition, The Song of Jujubes, at Frestonian Gallery, London. Kobayashi's paintings depict familiar yet surreal scenes, created from an amalgamation of memories, places, and ordinary people. In her dream-like ambiguous narratives, nature, animals, and humans are given equal status; her realms are symbiotic societies with multiple creatures. She captures transitory and fluctuating moments, depicting her protagonists in states of flux, vulnerability, and openness. Rendered in a post-Impressionist palette, her compositions are a potent mix of playfulness and deeper themes of human and natural life. Bringing together eleven new canvases, The Song of Jujubes takes its title from a song that the artist used to sing as a teenager in her hometown of Nagoya, Japan. It begins with a girl eating one jujube fruit every night, wondering what she will do when they are all gone. Imbued with a sense of nostalgia and loss, the works consider what "home" means and the strong relationship between people and place. This publication documents Kobayashi's paintings chronologically, from her early works of 2016 to 2024. In a foreword, the Directors of Frestonian Gallery, Matt Incledon and Rollo Campbell introduce the inner world of the artist and the themes of The Song of Jujubes. In an interview with Lisa Wainwright, Kobayashi discusses her time studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her unique painting technique, and the symbolism in her scenes. She also expands upon her artistic influences, including Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, the tenets of Buddhism, Tarot, and the Nabi painters, such as F矇lix Vallotton, ?douard Vuillard, and Pierre Bonnard. In her essay "Temperature of a Memory", Laura Allsop analyzes Kobayashi's recent paintings in relation to memory and place, particularly the artist's hometown of Nagoya. Edited by Incledon and designed by Joe Gilmore, the book is co-published by Frestonian Gallery and Anomie Publishing, London.Minami Kobayashi (b.1989, Nagoya, Japan) lives and works in London. She holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago (2018) and a BA in Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts (2016). Kobayashi makes figurative paintings that combine intimacy and mystery through their depictions of ordinary people, animals, and places, that seem vaguely surreal and ever so slightly off-kilter.Recent solo or duo exhibitions include I Spell a Word to Free You (with Adrianne Rubinstein) at Et Al Gallery, San Francisco (2024), Place and Presence (with Patrick Procktor) at Frestonian Gallery (2023), and Somewhere not here at Goldfinch Gallery, Chicago (2022).

"Visually stunning, formally innovative, and unlike anything I've ever read before."--Audrey T. Carroll, author of In My Next Queer Life, I Want to Be"In ...but i work here, Weiss renders sickness as a dense palimpsest of meaning and feeling. The reader is brought into a kitsch excess of chronic illness, bodily transformation, and cancer prevention from within the medical-industrial complex. Signposts of care are reminders of the uncanny; the reader is inside and outside of time; and medical documentation intertwines with incantations. All in all, this chapbook is triumphant refusal of the slick illness narrative."-Sarah Roth, writer & EIC of Tendon Magazine

Louis de Niverville

E C,Woodley  著
Ingram 出版
2024/12/13 出版

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY NOTABLE BOOK, FALL 2025 Louis de Niverville (1933-2019) was a painter and collagist. His experimental and thought-provoking art, often mislabelled as "surrealist," defied simple categorization. The ninth of thirteen children, young Louis was sent to a sanatorium in Ottawa for treatment of spinal tuberculosis at age six. He remained there for four and a half years. This long-term confinement would become a major influence on his art. Hired as an illustrator by the CBC in the late 1950s, de Niverville quickly immersed himself in the burgeoning Toronto art scene. His work relied heavily on his dreams and daydreams, and explored aspects of the individual, culture and nature, and often featured surreal "inside-outside" spaces. At a time when Abstract Expressionism and its offshoots were dominant in the international art world, Louis's early exhibitions in Toronto quickly seized the attention of respected art critics, and de Niverville was flagged as an artist to watch. This reputation plus a number of private commissions, including large-scale murals for Pearson International Airport and Spadina subway station, both in Toronto, helped thrust de Niverville to the forefront of the Toronto scene in the 1960s and 1970s. Edited by Thomas Miller--de Niverville's partner of many decades and an artist in his own right--and international art dealer Philip Ottenbrite, Louis de Niverville: Pentimenti includes texts from renowned art critics and curators Tobi Bruce, Ihor Holubizky, and E.C. Woodley, which trace de Niverville's rise in the Toronto scene, and which also provide critical art historical context to the depth and breadth of his unique practice. Heather Bell's biographical piece on de Niverville's childhood illuminates a practice seemingly born of childhood trauma and whimsy. Featuring more than 140 art reproductions and archival images, this is an in-depth examination of an artist who, in his unique portrayals of the individual, encouraged the exploration of the universal.

Ribera's Repetitions

Todd P,Olson  著
2024/12/12 出版

The seventeenth-century Valencian artist Jusepe de Ribera spent most of his career in Spanish Viceregal Naples, where he was known as "Lo Spagnoletto," or "the Little Spaniard." Working under the patronage of Spanish viceroys, Ribera held a special position bridging two worlds. In Ribera's Repetitions, art historian Todd P. Olson sheds new light on the complexity of Ribera's artwork and artistic methods and their connections to the Spanish imperial project.Drawing from a diverse range of sources, including poetry, literature, natural history, philosophy, and political history, Olson presents Ribera's work in a broad context. He examines how Ribera's techniques, including rotation, material decay (through etching), and repetition, influenced the artist's drawings and paintings. Many of Ribera's works featured scenes of physical suffering--from Saint Jerome's corroded skin and the flayed bodies of Saint Bartholomew and Marsyas to the ragged beggar-philosophers and the eviscerated Tityus. But far from being the result of an individual sadistic predilection, Olson argues, Ribera's art was inflected by the legacies of the Reconquest of Spain and Neapolitan coloniality. Ribera's material processes and themes were not hermetically sealed in the studio; rather, they were engaged in the global Spanish Empire.Pathbreaking and deeply interdisciplinary, this copiously illustrated book offers art history students and scholars a means to see Ribera's art anew.

Monumental

Ingram 出版
2024/12/11 出版

As the creator of the 67-foot-tall "Big Sam" statue of Sam Houston that overlooks Interstate 45 just south of Huntsville, Texas, David Adickes is a pivotal, if sometimes enigmatic, figure in Texas art. Though he made many contributions to the early development of the Houston art scene and to Texas Modernism, which has experienced an upsurge in interest of late, Adickes's life and work have had no thorough examination. Monumental: The Art of David Adickes tells the story of how a young artist from rural Texas studied with Fernand L矇ger in Paris, traveled the world, and returned to Texas to become one of the founders of a thriving art scene. Consideration of his monumental sculptures of Sam Houston, the Beatles, and various US presidents affords readers the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of making public art and navigating its political, cultural, and bureaucratic restrictions. Monumental considers the artistic implications of history, popular culture, kitsch, and even social media while exploring the dichotomy between the frequent academic skepticism and the ongoing mass appeal of Adickes's oeuvre. Scholars and students of contemporary Texas art, as well as general readers interested in Adickes's well-known public works, will enjoy this first-ever comprehensive look at a popular Texas artist.

Katherine Bradford

Ingram 出版
2024/12/10 出版

Bradford's figures swim, float and wander through the dark and dreamy landscapes of their canvasesSince the 1970s, painter Katherine Bradford has unapologetically blazed her own path in the art world: painting daily and building a community of like-minded artists in both Maine and New York. Bradford paints with a formal inventiveness and a shifting sense of figure and ground, giving narrative weight to her characters who may appear as heroes or lovers, families or couples, businessmen or isolated individuals. Her chromatic scenes, painted in many transparent layers of acrylic, transmit a light-filled quality and offer metaphorical possibilities as they veer between humor, pathos and abstraction. This reference monograph of her work features an essay by London-based art critic Allie Biswas that reflects on the metaphysical nature of Bradford's work, an interview with fellow artist and writer Daniel Gerwin, a narrative biography text by her children, Laura and Arthur Bradford, that offers a personal look at the artist's life and work, and an overview essay by Austrian curator Sandro Droschl. The book compiles over 100 artworks surveying Bradford's paintings from 2015 until today, focusing on her recent series entitled Swimmers and Mother Paintings dealing with her own vision of motherhood and womanhood.Katherine Bradford (born 1942) lives and works in New York City and Brunswick, Maine. She has exhibited at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum and most recently in a solo exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art, which traveled to the Frye Museum in Seattle. Bradford was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2011 and a Joan Mitchell Fellowship in 2012.

Ann Craven: Night

Ann,Craven  著
Karma, New York 出版
2024/12/10 出版

New compositions of earthly delights under the veil of night, from the painter known for her joyful depictions of birds, trees, flowers and moreThis catalog, accompanying Karma's three-part exhibition of new paintings by Ann Craven (born 1967), surveys major motifs of the artist's nearly 30-year-long practice. For the first time, she has set all of her scenes in the darkness of evening, creating a consistent chromatic background that intensifies her always-vibrant colors. These oils of moons, trees, birds, flowers and deer constitute the latest chapter in her systematic catalog of what she terms "revisitations," each of which is also a reinvention of her subject matter. In this body of work, and across her practice, figuration morphs into kaleidoscopic abstraction and back again, each canvas resisting easy categorization in favor of pure feeling. In addition to a lush plate section, this volume features an intimate conversation between the artist and curator Jay Sanders, an expansive art-historical essay by Richard Kalina and poems written and collected in dedication to Craven by Susan Howe.

The Anatomy of the Horse

Pallas Athene 出版
2024/12/03 出版

- This presentation of George Stubbs' The Anatomy of the Horse is taken from the 1853 printing, the last to use original plates, includes Stubb's full commentary- Complemented by essays from Constance Anne Parker and Oliver Kase place Stubbs' work in the context of his life and times, and of 18th-century medical science"The subtle forms and modelled curves and planes in a skeleton were to George Stubbs what a symphony is to a musician." -- Oxford Companion to Art "The most unique thing of its kind ever compiled. This heroic effort, an epic of the eighteenth century, is as great and unselfish a work as anything could be." -- Sir Alfred Munnings George Stubbs was one of the most original artists Britain has produced, and it is easy to forget how much his success was based on rigorous scientific observation. In 1756 he rented a farmhouse where he erected scaffolding to hold the cadavers of horses as he dissected and drew. After 18 months, Stubbs produced the drawings for The Anatomy of the Horse, which he later etched. The result was sensational. Scientists from all over Europe sent their congratulations, amazed at the perfection of the work. The Anatomy remained a textbook for artists and scientists for over a century, and its strange, spare beauty continues to fascinate. This edition is taken from the 1853 printing, the last to use Stubbs' original plates. The full Stubbs' commentary is included for the veterinarially minded. Extensive texts by Constance Anne Parker and Oliver Kase place Stubbs' work in the context of his life and times, and of 18th-century medical science.

John Scott

John,O'Brian  著
2024/12/03 出版

Raw, personal and political, John Scott: Firestorm presents an artist's searing critique of modernity's capacity for industrial warfare and the machines that enable it. John Scott (1949-2022) produced paintings, drawings, and sculptures of what he called "engines of history," the hyper-masculine military and civilian weapons of the past half-century. Surveillance aircraft, B-52 and stealth bombers, tanks, cruise missiles and rockets, as well as handguns, muscle cars, and motorcycles forcefully imprint themselves upon the viewer through Scott's fierce mark-making and large, rough sculptural gestures. Humanoid rabbits--often surrounded by numbers that fail to add up--represent those threatened by such technologies. The dichotomy between the death-dealing weaponry of the nuclear era and the vulnerability of human beings lies at the core of Scott's work. Scott deployed an idiosyncratic graphic language to represent apocalyptic machines and power imbalances, working in the tradition of Francisco Goya, K瓣the Kollwitz, Nancy Spero, and others. Scott grew up in Windsor, Ontario, across the river from Detroit, Michigan. Like many Canadian artists, writers, and intellectuals of his time, Scott was a close watcher of America, with a front-row seat on a sometimes rogue nation. Stylistically, his work is close to that of his contemporaries Jean-Michel Basquiat and William Kentridge, showing a kindred ferocity of mark-making and dark urgency. John Scott: Firestorm accompanies the exhibition of the same name organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, curated by Canadian art scholar John O'Brian. It is the first major exhibition of Scott's work to focus on his imagery of machines and modernity's capacity for industrial war--a body of work as meaningful today as it was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This publication features over 100 of Scott's works, a detailed biography, and new critical writings on the artist.

Xanti Schawinsky

2024/11/30 出版

Discover the life and art of Xanti Schawinski. Xanti Schawinsky: Play Life Illusion refers to the title of a performance that Xanti Schawinsky developed in 1936 with students at Black Mountain College. The Swiss artist who worked at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau emigrated in the 1930s via Italy to the United States. The volume assembles autobiographical texts and letters regarding the life's work of the multimedia artist and designer. During his time at the Bauhaus, Schawinsky learned that it is possible to be both an artist and a designer at the same time if your passion for and joy in experimentation are simply big enough. Thus, he repeatedly reinvented himself as a stage and exhibition designer, painter, graphic artist, teacher, and photographer. He made friends, allies, and colleagues who included not only Bauhaus artists like Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer but also avant-garde artists like Marcel Duchamp. Texts, accompanying explanations, and lively illustrations recreate his life and times.

Alois Riegl

Mit Press 出版
2024/11/27 出版

Alois Riegl (1858-1905) was one of the founders of art history as a discipline. This is the first general introduction to the work of the celebrated Austrian who brought complex philosophical considerations to bear on art and its history. Ranging easily over diverse fields and among a large group of thinkers, Margaret Iversen establishes Riegl's relevance to recent critical thinking while clearly delineating his extraordinary critical powers. Iversen contextualizes Riegl's thought among the wider cultural crosscurrents of his time, pointing for example to his denunciation of the sub-Semperians and his profound influence on Walter Benjamin. She is equally concerned to relate Riegl's work to contemporary theoretical interests, arguing that he pioneered an approach to art history that took into consideration the role of the spectator. She devotes a chapter to Riegl's theory of spectator/depiction relationships, comparing it with more recent writing on the subject by commentators like Fried, Foucault, and others. In a sympathetic reading of Riegl, Iversen interprets his theory of Kunstwollen or artistic volition, as a concept that ran counter to narrowly empiricist and determinist histories of art that were dominant in his time. She provides extended critical commentary on his most important works, Questions of Style, Late Roman Art Industry, and The Dutch Group Portrait, enriched by explorations of the theoretical background of his systematic art history, including the work of Kant, Hegel, Herbart, and Hildebrand. Iversen also details Erwin Panofsky's early response to Riegl, arguing that Panofsky's search for an authoritative viewpoint collapsed Riegl's multiple typology of style into an art history constructed around a single aesthetic norm.

Egon Schiele

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

This book highlights the intimate relationship between landscape and portraiture in the work of the Austrian Expressionist artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918). Plants, natural environments, and townscapes determine the spaces Egon Schiele created in his paintings, and they also reflect the rich symbolism he employed that is centered around the human condition. In particular, plants are often endowed with an allegorical meaning. Flowers and trees assume the role of portrait subjects and convey an almost human appearance. Schiele's landscapes always represent more than their apparent subject matter. His portrayal of nature and his rendering of towns and trees epitomize the life cycle and the human condition. This catalogue, accompanying a spectacular exhibition on view at the Neue Galerie New York, will investigate the importance of landscape in the artist's work. The contributing authors are internationally distinguished experts on Schiele's landscapes and representatives of museums and universities in Europe and the United States.

Elmgreen & Dragset: Spaces

Hatje Cantz 出版
2024/11/22 出版

The first comprehensive publication to focus solely on Elmgreen & Dragset's spatial alterationsSince the early days of their collaboration, Elmgreen & Dragset have reconfigured conventional exhibition spaces, transforming them into uncanny settings within a gallery context. By juxtaposing exhibition spaces with incongruous settings or situations, the duo encourages visitors to investigate the social, cultural and political structures embedded within everyday settings. Spaces is unique in its scope in that it focuses on the holistic spacial alterations that Elmgreen & Dragset create, rather than the installations and public art that have been previously studied. Texts and a chronology of past spatial alterations provide academic context and an insightful overview of this important aspect of the artists' oeuvre.

Living Jewish Art

Ingram 出版
2024/11/22 出版

The art of Itshak Holtz (1925-2018) is an intimate guide to the Jewish world, approached with a sensitivity, confidence, and thorough familiarity that only someone living and breathing it could attain. Holtz was born in a small town near Warsaw and moved with his family to Jerusalem when he was ten years old; he pursued his artistic training there and in New York, at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. From the beginning of his artistic career, Holtz was drawn to depict the life of the Orthodox communities of which he himself was a part, in both New York and Jerusalem. His subjects were not idealized memories of the imagined past, but the real people around him, continuing an ancient way of life today. Holtz's work envelops the viewer with its warmth and offers a sympathetic and honest insight into the inner world of his subjects, whom he pictures in their prayer houses, on their streets, engaged in their daily affairs. This lavishly illustrated volume surveys Holtz's incomparable paintings, drawings, and prints of Jewish life. Organized by subject matter, it presents his scenes of worship, celebration, work, and everyday life, as well as his landscapes and portraits. An introductory essay by Richard McBee, the noted critic of Jewish art, traces Holtz's biography and artistic development.

Olivia Erlanger: If Today Were Tomorrow

Hatje Cantz 出版
2024/11/22 出版

Outer space-inspired sculptures reckon with the structures of suburbiaIn our age of "polycrisis," wherein multiple seismic events occur simultaneously, how do we visualize our place in a world that is no longer recognizable? If Today Were Tomorrow reimagines what it means to inhabit a planet. Shifting between notions of home--as an architecture, a neighborhood, a world or a feeling--American artist Olivia Erlanger (born 1990) continues her decade-long disruption of what she refers to as the "semiotics of suburbia," or the symbols and myths of suburban life. In this new body of work, the artist expands our understanding of home as a planetary cosmos, containing not only houses but also their interiors and surrounding infrastructure. If Today Were Tomorrow documents Erlanger's debut solo museum exhibition in the US, showcasing her sculptures, film and installation-based work. It includes essays on her work by authors Chris Kraus and Mark von Schlegell.
