Rachel Ruysch: Nature Into Art
The first monograph in over 70 years on the celebrated female protagonist of Dutch floral paintingAt the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th, Rachel Ruysch was celebrated across Europe for her sumptuous floral still lifes, admired both for their artistry and for their accurate depictions of flowers, fruit and insects. Often placed on stone ledges and against dark backgrounds, her sumptuous bouquets seem to spill over with all manner of colorful flowers and plants, as bees and butterflies flit to and from their petals. Ruysch's star faded after the close of the Dutch Golden Age, but late 20th- and early 21st-century interest in women artists has returned her to the forefront of the art historical canon.Nature into Art introduces today's audiences to Ruysch's achievements while also exploring the pioneering role of women artists and scientists in the Dutch Republic in the 17th and 18th centuries. Brilliantly illustrated with detailed reproductions of Ruysch's intricate paintings, the essays touch upon Ruysch's career and her immediate legacy while also widening their scope to consider the role of botany in the early modern era and the storied tradition of botanical illustration. The catalog also includes an index of the various flora and fauna depicted within Ruysch's work, which feature both native and nonnative species.Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) produced hundreds of the floral still lifes for which she is best known. She was an apprentice in the studio of Willem van Aelst and the daughter of famed scientist Frederick Ruysch, meaning she had access to a wider world of Dutch flower painters and botanists. From 1708 until 1716 she served as court painter to Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine.

Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine)
A gorgeously illustrated book documenting acclaimed artist Kara Walker's major new installation--"a groundbreaking collaboration merging art and technology" (New York Times) Kara Walker is renowned for her bold examinations of the dynamics of power and the exploitation of race and sexuality through her profound work that has appeared in exhibitions around the world. She has created monumental sculptures, including A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby (2014), for the former Domino Sugar refinery in Brooklyn, and Fons Americanus (2019) for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. This beautifully designed book documents the creation of Walker's major new commission, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) (2024), at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The installation features eight Black automatons, including the seven-foot-tall prophetess, Fortuna, who responds to each visitor with a choreographed routine and a printed fortune fresh from her mouth. Situated in fields of obsidian--a volcanic glass with deep spiritual properties--the other robotic dolls, or Gardeners, rise and fall, gesture, turn, and clamor--trapped in a never-ending cycle of ritual and struggle. Evoking wonder, reflection, respite, and hope, the work explores the memorialization of trauma, the objectives of technology, and the possibilities of transforming the negative energies that plague contemporary society. This book presents Walker's working drawings and paintings, photographs of her creative process with collaborators, and detailed images of the final installation. Also included are an illuminating text by Walker, an essay by product designer David A. M. Goldberg, a selection of fashion designer Gary Graham's notebook pages, an excerpt from Donna Haraway's influential essay "A Cyborg Manifesto," experimental short fiction by writer Damani McNeil, and a conversation between Walker and curator Eungie Joo. Gabriel Orozco: Spacetime/Working Tables
A singular look at Orozco's itinerant studio practice, from the materials he collects on his travels to the finished works pulled from gallery storagePublished in a dos-?-dos format, Spacetime/Working Tables simultaneously focuses on two different but related projects by Gabriel Orozco (born 1962). Orozco's practice is grounded in his encounters with nature and the matter of everyday life. He keeps no permanent studio space; instead, he usually works at some kind of table at home or on the grass in his garden. The Working Tables are an accumulation of various objects, sketches, models and leftovers of his art making. They give a sense of Orozco's working process in a particular environment and his subsequent experimentation. The other half of the book focuses on Spacetime, a long-term, temporary exhibition that brought together a large selection of his work accumulated from over 30 years of living in New York and exhibiting with Marian Goodman Gallery. The show consisted of items from the artist's personal collection and gallery inventory turned into open storage.
The Sweet Life
An entirely new exploration of the life and career of the expat American artist Julius LeBlanc Stewart (1855-1919), who spent nearly all his life in Paris, and whose oil paintings feature in private collections and those of many major museums on both sides of the Atlantic.Stewart's paintings are highly engaging and attractive, covering a broad cross-section of later nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American Expat Parisian high society, its genteel past-times, and travel, in a style of painting that was uniquely his own, and that was lauded in both Europe and America. This new volume presents over seventy major paintings, pastels and drawings across thematic sections, with a new introduction to Stewart's life, career, and world through essays by major specialists on nineteenth and early twentieth century American art and history. The authors look variously at Stewart's early career and training at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts, his later tutelage under French and Spanish masters, Eduardo Zamaco簿s, Jean-L矇on G矇r繫me, and Raimundo Madrazo, his family's involvement in the production of sugar; then the world of the American Expat society in which Stewart circulated, and the evolution Stewart's later style, in the mid 1880s towards multi-figured, narrative scenes of his family, friends and meticulous depictions of their costumes; then for a brief period later the sensuous Arcadian nudes bathed in sunlight, celebrating the attributes of Diana and the Bachenates. Collectively these provide the first major exploration of Stewart's world and work with, new contribution to our understanding of the importance and legacy of his art, and his advocation for his community of fellow American artists in France.

Alexander Kluge: The Dragonfly's Eye
The figurehead of New German Cinema meditates on the next leap forward in visual aestheticsIn The Dragonfly's Eye, author and filmmaker Alexander Kluge (born 1932) tests out the cooperative capacities of the Stable Diffusion model, which uses AI to process images. As a filmmaker, he has years of experience dealing with the camera and its ways of seeing. As a result, he is particularly curious about the different images that AI can generate. Here, Kluge reflects on the idiosyncrasies of these new types of images, in which chance factors and errors create subjective forms, resulting in open images that are hard to place. He establishes rules for using the "virtual camera" and thus contributes to a debate on how AI should be handled. In a series of stories combining images and text--ranging from cases of phantom pregnancy in East Germany to the mercenary Yevgeny Prigozhin--he examines how the "virtual camera" uncovers a new lens within which stories can be framed.

Calla Henkel & Max Pitegoff: German Theater 2010-2022
Chronicling 10 years of the duo's collaborative practice and their influential artist-run performance and theater spaces in BerlinThis book, German Theater 2010-2022, is the first monograph on the work of the artist duo Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff. Their manifold practices play out, live test and fictionalize the mechanisms that shape creative communities. Chronicling over a decade of production in Berlin, the book is organized around the influential bar and theater spaces they ran there: Times Bar (2011-12), New Theater (2013-15), Gr羹ner Salon at the Volksb羹hne (2017-18) and TV Bar (2019-22). Rooted in a renewed conceptual approach to photography, Henkel and Pitegoff's oeuvre spins an allegory of this historical moment in which precarity and gentrification are two sides of the same coin. Their photographs, plays, writings and films address the complexity of collective action, painting a deadpan picture of the social and economic systems that sustain communal exchanges and their eminently fragile autonomy.Calla Henkel (born 1988) is from Minneapolis and based in Berlin and Los Angeles. She is the author of Other People's Clothes (Doubleday, 2022) and Scrap (The Overlook Press, 2024). She has staged plays at Volksb羹hne Berlin and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and her artistic work with Max Pitegoff has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide. Viola Frey: Artist's Mind / Studio / World
An expansive exploration of Frey's wide-ranging artistic practice, from vivid, pictorial pastels to her beloved larger-than-life sculpturesIn the late 1980s, American artist Viola Frey (1933-2004) began a series of drawings she titled Artist's Mind/Studio/World. Although she is best known for her large-scale figurative sculptures in clay, it is these pastels on paper that inspired this first monograph on Frey's extraordinary work. Spanning more than 50 years, Frey's art making crisscrossed myriad subjects, mediums and forms. Taken together, the Artist's Mind/Studio/World drawings speak to this breadth, clarifying her devotion to line, color and scale, and demonstrating the ways she seamlessly transitioned from three dimensions to two, and from the intimate to the monumental.Extensively illustrated with recent discoveries from the Viola Frey Archives--including newspaper clippings, correspondence, slides and photographs--and containing major new critical texts alongside an illustrated chronology, Artist's Mind/Studio/World explores the life and work of a vanguard multidisciplinary artist whose influence resonates with contemporary artists and audiences.
Modigliani
Amadeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was one of the many and diverse talents who were drawn to Paris in the early years of this century, making the city a vibrant but pressurized environment for artistic expression. A legend grew up around Modigliani, who, along with others, engendered the concept of the peintre maudit - the accursed painter - whose poverty, corruption and excess were the very seeds from which his remarkable works of art were conceived. Unlike the Italian Futurists, who stormed at their own overwhelming tradition, Modigliani seemed to sense the possibility of returning to it for renewal. His interpretation of a central theme of the tradition, the reclining female nude, produced a series of uniquely beautiful works, outstanding in the grace and harmony of their linear designs and the quality of their colour. Nude, portraits and studies of a surprising range of personalities and psychological types are represented in this ideal introduction to the artist, as is a selection of his remarkable stone carvings, of which about 25 survive.

Chris Ofili: Joyful Sorrow
A stunning presentation of the acclaimed British painter Chris Ofili's newest body of work that continues his exploration of Shakespeare's Othello Renowned for his rich, multilayered paintings, Ofili here expands his engagement with William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice (1603-1604). The transmuting colors and forms of the watercolors and paintings in this volume reflect the complex interiority of the character Othello--his vulnerabilities and his joyful sorrows. The artist also considers these works, which investigate ideas of authenticity, meaning, and selfhood, to be partly self-portraits. As viewers and readers, encountering a subject whose features split and shift with each repeated representation, we are asked to consider metamorphosis, love, the bearing of outside influences on our inner selves, and the force we exercise on the world. Published on the occasion of a two-site exhibition staged by David Zwirner Paris and Victoria Miro in Venice, the catalogue includes a text from Ofili's studio and a selection of poems by Jason Allen-Paisant from his 2023 collection Self-Portrait as Othello.
Cynthia Hawkins: Art Notes, Art
A scintillating record of Cynthia Hawkins' work and the Black gallery scene of 1970s and 1980s New YorkSince the 1970s, Cynthia Hawkins (born 1950) has investigated the potentials of abstract painting. Her process-oriented practice embraces the improvisational to create a space for her continually evolving vocabulary. From 1979 to 1981, Hawkins documented these developments in a journal. A record of routine and the everyday, the journal also gathers sketches, notes for new and in-progress works, and responses to contemporary art and criticism, bringing the artist's reflections into relief. Art Notes, Art also offers a picture of the burgeoning Black-owned gallery scene in New York that Hawkins was an important participant in--including Just Above Midtown, where she had her first solo exhibition in 1981--as well as the women artists' circle she was an active member of. Art Notes, Art is richly illustrated with works by the artist produced during this key period, photographs and ephemera, and a visual archive of contemporaneous work by her peers.
Power, Wisdom, and Courage
Every year, during the month of October, artists participate in a world-wide social event called Inktober, created by Jake Parker in 2009. The movement encourages artists to create art every day during the whole month; a total of 31 drawings traditionally made in black and white line art. In 2019, James Art Ville participated for a second time.Instead of adhering to the official Inktober daily prompts, he chose to follow the themed calendar based on The Legend of Zelda video game series, aptly called Linktober. Each daily illustration was inspired by a single word. This would range from a specific character, location, or concept. Fans of the series will see drawings that reference many games throughout the franchise, from the earliest 2D classics to the more recent open-world entries that redefined the conventions of Zelda. This book was made by a Zelda fan for Zelda fans! But even if you are not familiar with the series, it is James' hope that everyone can still enjoy the deep lore of these fantastical characters and stories. At the very least he hopes the drawings are enough to warrant a thumbs up! As a bonus, James includes dozens of additional Zelda drawings he's made over the years. It's dangerous to go alone...

David Hammons
Hammons' body prints, flags and found-object sculptures come together in this artist's book documenting his thought-provoking conceptual exhibitionThis post-exhibition catalog revisits David Hammons' 2019 show at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. A singular book created entirely under the artist's direction, this publication illustrates the most expansive exhibition of this legendary artist's work to date.Said critic Jonathan Griffin of the original exhibition, "Alongside finished artworks, including framed examples of Hammons's sublime drawings made with bounced basketballs and powdered Kool-Aid, there are plenty of apparently ad hoc, readymade interventions, installations in which it is unclear where one ends and the next begins. ... Hammons, it seems, wants his viewers to relax, historiography be damned."Born in 1943 in Springfield, Illinois, David Hammons moved to Los Angeles in 1963 at the age of 20 and began making his body prints several years later. He studied at Otis Art Institute with Charles White and became part of a younger generation of Black avant-garde artists loosely associated with the Black Arts Movement. In Los Angeles, Hammons was a cofounder of Studio Z, a group which included Senga Nengudi, Maren Hassinger, Joe Ray and others. Hammons has lived in New York since 1978.
Titus Kaphar: Exhibiting Forgiveness
Titus Kaphar's moving screenplay Exhibiting Forgiveness (2024) tells the story of a father and son who reunite after years of estrangement, and follows their choices as to how to make peace with the past. Featuring hundreds of film stills and paintings, this book documents the development of Kaphar's movie from script to screen. This book provides a behind-the-scenes view of the debut feature film, Exhibiting Forgiveness, by renowned artist and director, Titus Kaphar. The film follows Tarrell, a successful Black painter, who reunites with his estranged father, La'Ron. Having endured years of La'Ron's addiction and abuse as a child, the trauma of Tarrell's past reverberates throughout his life and art. Facing his newly sober father, Tarrell must reconcile himself with his childhood and determine how to move forward. With poignant performances by Andr矇 Holland, Andra Day, John Earl Jelks, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Exhibiting Forgiveness masterfully depicts the cycle of abuse and comments on the power dynamics of the contemporary art world. Juxtaposing a marked-up script with film stills, this publication captures the transformation of Exhibiting Forgiveness into a feature film. It also illustrates fifteen paintings that Kaphar created for the movie to showcase Tarrell's vibrant artistic practice.
Robert Ryman: Early and Late
An extensive look at Robert Ryman's formative work from the early 1960s, as well as his last series of paintings In the 1960s, Robert Ryman began to firmly establish the broad parameters of his radical and inventive practice. While he initially gained recognition for work he made in the late 1960s and early 1970s, his earlier paintings have remained less widely seen. This publication includes representative works of all facets of Ryman's painterly practice during this time--influenced by his career as a jazz musician--including his use of thick impasto brushstrokes on both stretched and unstretched canvas; heavily or sparsely worked paintings in both small and large formats; and a group of rarely seen works on raw linen, each featuring one or several seemingly complete, independent compositions. Many of these works feature subtle suggestions of colorful underpainting that leave an outsized effect on the viewing experience, while in other works Ryman's assertive use of green, red, and blue intensifies the visual presence of the various white tones. Revealing the breadth of Ryman's work, this catalogue also includes a selection of drawings, many of which were made concurrently with the early works, as well as his last paintings. The final canvases demonstrate the inexhaustible and probing nature of Ryman's singular approach to painting over his five-decade career. The details reveal the visual presence of various white tones, creating an interplay between color and absence and dimensionality that characterizes much of Ryman's oeuvre.
IRIS_FLUIDISM, works 2018-2024
CARMEN RIEGER (IRIS) was born in Romania and has been living in Austria for almost 21 years. A graduate of the Faculty of Industrial Design she has worked for many years as a furniture designer. Since 2018 she has experienced a whole new style inspired by the organic forms that fluids create in their movement. She called this new style "Fluidism". For IRIS, her style Fluidism is a tribute to the most fascinating, important and complex fluid on Earth, without which life cannot exist _ WATER. Water is witness to the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living things. For the artist, water is not only the flow of life, but also an expression of spirituality. It is a sacred gift of inestimable value that we must take care. For IRIS, water is an expression of love and interdependence of all life forms on the planet and in the Universe. Water unites all of creation into a whole of boundless beauty, diversity, and complexity. The water in our body reminds us of the beauty and the unique chance offered to be present in everyday life, to witness the magnificent spectacle of life. Her artworks are composed of intricately organized, organic forms inspired by the movement of fluids. In the bodies of humans, plants and animals, water is found in a proportion of 70% or even higher. Thus, in the summer of 2018, IRIS had the idea of drawing only the liquid part of the bodies without completely destroying their original shape and character. In a person's portrait, for example, their character and inner life can be recognized. An elephant is transformed into a new elephant through a complex ensemble of colors and organic shapes without losing the idea of an elephant. A bird remains a bird without losing the idea of flight. From the beginning, the artist chose to use the 7 colors of the rainbow and the shades obtained by combining them in all her works of art. She wants to bring beauty, hope and love to life through her art.

Dike Blair: Matinee
Blair's painterly use of mise-en-sc癡ne evokes the influence of Edward Hopper's cinema-inspired tableauxThis volume builds on a developing body of scholarship linking the American painters Dike Blair (born 1952) and Edward Hopper (1882-1967) to each other. In both Hopper's tableaux and Blair's mise-en-sc癡nes, light is a character in its own right, whether casting an eerie pallor on a desolate interior or illuminating the lip of a half-drunk glass; both artists imply narratives without offering definitive plots, inviting the viewer to stitch together a story from images and absences. Matinee foregrounds the "realism" of Blair and Hopper within the context of the utter irreality of the movies, lambent and liminal. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name, organized by Helen Molesworth at the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center in Nyack, New York, this volume features a conversation between Molesworth and Blair that takes as its jumping-off point Hopper's painting New York Movie (1939). This book was published in conjunction with Edward Hopper House

Jane Dickson
Carnivalesque scenes of American nightlife from a painter who called Times Square her homeChicago-born, New York-based artist Jane Dickson (born 1952), makes paintings and drawings that explore the psychogeography of American culture, focusing primarily on New York's Times Square, where she lived for nearly 30 years. She participated in legendary artist collectives such as Fashion Moda, Collaborative Projects Inc. and Group Material. Working figuratively from her own photographic snapshots, Dickson portrays strip clubs, diners, motels and sex workers and their seemingly straight-laced foils: suburban homes, driveways and businessmen. Using oils and acrylic on canvas and linen alongside a range of atypical surfaces such as vinyl, felt, astroturf and sandpaper, she achieves impressionistic textures that often blur her subjects in hazes of neon and darkness. This first comprehensive monograph of her work includes a 1996 essay-cum-manifesto by Dickson, and new essays by Shannon Mattern, Daniel S. Palmer, Lucy Sante and Yasmin Ramirez.
The Art of Chestnut Review
If art is what, in the words of John Sloan, makes life worth living, then we should do our best to create it, experience it, and sustain it. It is our great pleasure to present in these pages the first five years of visual art published in Chestnut Review. Art has been an important part of the magazine since its founding, and we are proud of the 77 visual artists who first agreed to have their work published, and here republished, by us. Their images enrich our pages, inspire our imaginations, and feed our emotions. As we considered how best to celebrate this body of work, however, we realized that simply presenting the art again was insufficient. So we asked a select group of 36 Chestnut staff and friends to each adopt an art piece and to write a response to it. Thus, every single one of these pieces have inspired unique acts of contemplation and creation. These writers, credited with each piece that they chose, took on this task with a contagious sense of excitement that made all the work to put the volume together worthwhile.Their responses represent a wide spectrum of genres and sub-genres, from art appreciation prose pieces to poetry, creative nonfiction to short fiction. And each, of course, is a view into the particular writer's engagement with the art that spoke to them. We hope that you'll enjoy spending time with each of these pieces and their corresponding linked writings, and that they may lead you to your own acts of creation.

Voices of the Sea
Pat Feinman's Voices of the Sea drew me into its half-lit world where thoughts and memories drift into dreams, a place where there is both a danger and a comfort in seeking refuge. With the deceptive simplicity of a tone poem, the art and words merge into a rhythmic tide of images of loss and longing, and that most encompassing of human traits, our search for meaning. Like the sea itself, the story is seductive, melancholy and ultimately, mesmerizing.-Hudson Talbott, author of A Walk in the Words
Native Genius
This book explores the world of contemporary American Indian Art in the Southwest, a subject that has long been overlooked-until now. At the heart of the book is how these artists are trapped in a world over which they have little control. If they paint what the tourists expect them to paint, such as Indians on horseback hunting buffalo, then they're going to find gallery representation and sell work. Conversely, if they paint the subject of their choice (like Anglo artists do), they have a hard time finding a gallery and making sales. Native Genius tells the compelling stories of some of these indigenous artists and how they've found a way to flourish and create works of great substance.
Skull
Ever since the first primate picked up a skull and stared into the empty sockets of Eternity, skulls have Fascinated us. Some fear them as symbols of their own inevitable demise, while others see them as a gate to something Beyond our Comprehension. It is that Attraction/Repulsion that Interests me, and this book is a collection of Drawings and Sculptures I've made about that skin deep ossified Temple that Protects and Houses Awareness.

George Bellows
A major new volume celebrating the lithographs of George Wesley Bellows, regarded as one of America's greatest artists.George Bellows (1882-1925) was a painter, illustrator, and printmaker. His career established, in late 1915 he turned to lithography. Over the next nine years he almost single-handedly elevated lithography in America to a fine art. The inherent flexibility of the process, its potential for drawing in vigorous strokes and its richness of tone were well suited to his style. The subjects that fascinated him range from intimate studies of his family and friends to snap shots of American life, the atrocities of World War I, and what first caught the public's attention, Boxing. All were new and undeniably American. George Bellows; American Life in Print features two essays: "Bellows, Advocate for Lithography" with in depth examination of sixty-six lithographs and drawings. A second essay explores the artist's rise to fame in "Bellows and the 'Art Palace of the West, '" focusing on his long term relationship with the Cincinnati Art Museum and it's "Annual Exhibition of American Art."
