Poetic Escape
This book is the first of what will hopefully be many. It is a poetry novel and covers a lot of topics that many are either powerless or too afraid to speak up on. So this is my way of helping those who struggle with these issues in silence.
David Diehl: Icons
Saintlike portraits of soccer stars that play on the relationship between the church and sportsFew things are more exalted than a great athlete, and the Icons paintings by David Diehl (born 1976) emphasize this parareligious worship to fanatical effect. Comprising over 70 portraits of haloed soccer players from S籀crates to Maradona, the series applies a hagiographical treatment to secular heroes.
Nathaniel Mary Quinn
Intended as a touchstone for all those interested in Nathaniel Mary Quinn's work for years to come, this monograph, dedicated to the artist, encapsulates over ten years of paintings and works on paper, and provides multiple perspectives and insights into Quinn's career to date. Archival photographs of the artist and his studio, offer a peak into Quinn's working process and reference materials. With an introduction by Larry Gagosian, the book features new texts by Dawn Ades and Andrew Winer. An in-depth interview between the artist and Sarah Elizabeth Lewis examines Quinn's approach to his practice, his vision, and everything in-between. This monograph is the first comprehensive survey of Nathaniel Mary Quinn's work, featuring paintings made since 2013. Quinn's images combine bodily fragments derived from sources that include both personal images and those culled from the media. Working without preliminary sketches, he forms composite images of faces and figures that resemble collages but are in fact painted and drawn. Developed with oil paint, charcoal, gouache, oil stick, and pastel, these works address the hybridity of perception and identity. The book includes over 125 color plates of Quinn's paintings, as well as studio photographs that offer an insight into his process. An introduction from Larry Gagosian is followed by an essay by Andrew Winer which discusses his work in terms of representation, abstraction, and memory. The volume also features a conversation between the artist and Sarah Elizabeth Lewis that offers firsthand reflections on the painter's practice, as well as an essay by Dawn Ades contextualizing Quinn's work in relation to Modern and contemporary collage, painting, and portraiture.
The Art of Jes繳s Cisneros
A visually mesmerizing book that celebrates the wide range and intensity of Jose Cisneros's artistry.Jes繳s Cisneros is a celebrated international illustrator whose work is characterised by its economy of elements, simple, almost minimalist strokes, and a limited selection of colours to breathe life into highly evocative drawings. This book filled with vibrant images presents Cisneros's creative processes as the artist shares insights about inspiration, improvisation, personal style, and artistic evolution. The author includes an illuminating interview woven throughout the text and gives glimpse into Cisneros's personal notebooks, showcasing the research and exploration that underpins his magical scenes. From experimental workshops conducted with young people worldwide to commissioned works and his own expressive and introspective pieces illustrating poetry and prose, children's books and theatre scenery, the breadth of Cisneros's art unfolds before readers' eyes. The reader accompanies the artist as he wields brushes worn with time, dipping them into jars of paint and sketching on squares of vegetable paper. We witness the subtle interplay of pale pinks merged with pearl greys and the vigorous intensity of explosive carmine reds kissed by African browns. Cisneros's palette dances with indescribable colours, a testament to the hypnotic alchemy of his chosen paints. With a visually mesmerizing collection of his works, the book celebrates the wide range and intensity of Cisneros's artistry and how sensibility and technique combine in his illustrations, proving that great stories can be told with very little.
Frankenthaler
Frankenthaler completely reimagines John Elderfield's landmark 1989 monograph, making it the most comprehensive book on the artist to date. Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the twentieth century. A member of the second generation of American postwar abstract painters, she is widely credited with expanding the possibilities of abstraction through her invention of the soak-stain technique, and her highly personal references to figuration and landscape. This monograph is a revised and expanded edition of John Elderfield's landmark monograph (Frankenthaler, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1989) for the twenty-first century. It includes updated text throughout, along with a new chapter that covers work made post-1988. There are over 300 full-color reproductions of artworks by Frankenthaler, along with nearly 100 comparative illustrations and documentary photographs. Welcome to Happyland
Welcome to Happyland is a captivating collection of poems, rhymes, and digital artwork, offering readers a journey through whimsical landscapes tinged with deeper, often unsettling, undertones. Blending playful language with vivid imagery, the collection draws on the poetic traditions of Roald Dahl's mischievous wordplay, the macabre nuances of Edgar Allan Poe, and the introspective, minimalist style of Emily Dickinson. The result is a book that beckons readers to explore beyond the surface, unearthing the complexities that lie beneath its seemingly cheerful exterior. At first glance, Happyland appears as an idyllic realm filled with quirky characters and imaginative tales, but as the reader ventures deeper, darker themes begin to emerge. The juxtaposition between joy and sorrow, light and shadow, evokes a sense of intrigue and reflection. The poetry's rhythmic cadence pairs seamlessly with the artist's finger-painted illustrations, which-though digitally rendered-retain the raw, tactile essence of traditional mediums. The artwork itself is deceptively simple, yet layered with symbolic depth, inviting readers to pause and consider the underlying meanings hidden within the strokes. These pieces provoke thought and emotion, creating a balance between innocence and introspection.Welcome to Happyland is not merely a collection of light-hearted rhymes and playful images; it is an exploration of human emotion, framed through the lens of fantasy and abstract representation. It invites readers of all ages to experience joy, curiosity, and melancholy-all within the pages of a beautifully crafted, multi-sensory experience.

Raqib Shaw
The first monograph on more than thirty years' work by the Indian-born British artist, whose opulent, brightly colored paintings have made him one of the most extraordinary and sought-after artists working today. Shaw's work is as vibrant and ornate in color and detail as it is ambitious in scope, with a remarkable synergy between his fantastical and often violent imagery and the delicacy of his technique. Deeply inspired by the old masters but infused with his own personal iconography, and drawing equally on eastern and western mythology, his work represents a compelling and profoundly contemporary hybridization of aesthetics and sensibilities. His opulent and intricately detailed paintings of fantastical worlds, often with surfaces inlaid with vibrantly colored jewels and painted in enamel, reveal an eclectic fusion of influences--from Persian carpets and Northern Renaissance painting to industrial materials and Japanese lacquerware--but ultimately reflect the universality of the human condition. Collected here, in the first comprehensive monograph on the artist to date, are more than 100 of Shaw's works, representing thirty years of painting in which intricate detail, rich color, and bejeweled surfaces mask the intensity and depth of his imagery.
Pino Pascali
From fuzzy spiders to toy machine guns, Pascali's playfulness is on full display in this expansive two-volume survey of his short careerArte Povera artist Pino Pascali (1935-68) created "fake sculptures" that played with perceptions of reality. This two-volume exhibition catalog-cum-reader juxtaposes 49 of his works with nine pieces by other postwar artists, and includes both an exhibition chronology and an anthology of texts on the artist.
Contrasts
In Contrasts, artist Chris Austin takes readers on a deeply personal and imaginative journey through his surreal, wildlife-inspired art. Known for placing animals from different ecosystems--like sharks floating over mossy forest floors--Austin challenges the boundaries of nature, creating absurd yet thought-provoking scenes that explore themes of adaptability, interconnectedness, and survival. These juxtapositions not only surprise but spark deeper conversations about harmony and tension within unlikely environments. Austin's artwork is more than just visual spectacle; it's a reflection of his personal evolution, shaped by the conflicting influences of his youth. His use of contrasting wildlife serves as a metaphor for the dualities he experienced growing up, from moments of chaos to finding clarity and peace. Central to his work is marine life, a recurring symbol of higher consciousness and inner calm, representing the moments of serenity that helped him navigate life's challenges. Self-taught and driven by a love for pop culture, skateboarding, and nature, Austin blends vibrant energy with introspection, using his art to reconcile the turbulent path of his upbringing. Through Contrasts, he invites readers to reflect on their own journeys--embracing the contradictions, confronting fears, and finding unexpected connections in a world where nature grapples with the unnatural. Dedicated to those who guided him, particularly his dear friend and mentor Samara Lovell, this book is both an artistic exploration and a tribute to the power of friendship, resilience, and self-discovery.

Joseph Beuys: In Defense of Nature
A fresh look at Beuys' environmental work and the social change it continues to inspireGrounded in The Broad's collection of multiples by Joseph Beuys (1921-86), In Defense of Nature centers the German artist's commitment to environmental justice. The project traces Beuys' long history of activism, from founding alternative organizations such as the Organization for Direct Democracy to his involvement in Germany's Green Party. These efforts culminated in Beuys' last major project, 7,000 Oaks, which involved planting 7,000 trees accompanied by stones throughout the city of Kassel, Germany, from 1982 to 1987. Beuys' concept inspired Social Forest: Oaks of Tovaangar, a reforestation project in Los Angeles inaugurated as part of the PST ART initiative. With programs that address overlapping issues of environmental justice, reconciliation, and restoration, Social Forest highlights the continued impact of 7,000 Oaks and brings new meaning to Beuys' legacy four decades later, in a vastly different landscape that equally demands repair.
Thinking with the Harrisons
Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison, known as 'the Harrisons', dedicated five decades to exploring and demonstrating a new approach to artistic practice, centred on "doing no work that does not attend to the wellbeing of the web of life." Their collaborative practice pioneered a way of drawing together art and ecology. They closely observed, often with irony and humour, how human intervention disrupts the dynamics of life as a web of interrelationships. The authors of this book 'think with' the Harrisons, critically tracing their poetics as a reimaging and reconfiguring of the arts in response to the unfolding planetary crisis. They draw parallels between the artists' poetics and rethinking in the philosophy of science, particularly drawing on the work of Isabelle Stengers.Thinking with the Harrisons is for anyone concerned with the implications of ecological concerns as a reimagining of public life, including the interaction of art and science. Throughout their joint practice, the Harrisons sought to engage policy makers, governments, ecologists, artists, and inhabitants of specific places, sensitizing us to the crises that emerge from grounded experiences of place and time.
Art and Street Politics in the Global 1960s
The present volume represents an international collaboration of researchers working to remedy this oversight. Nakajima's work demands a reconceptualization of narratives of this art and politics and their specific interrelation to consider his exemplary nonconformity-and its exemplary exclusion.

A Hundred Suns
Three poems by Mayakovsky, O'Hara and Ken Kiff's close friend Martha Kapos shed light on the way Kiff, like Paul Klee before him, took a line for a walk, and then another line, and then yet another. Kapos' poem was inspired by A true account of Talking to the Sun at Fire Island by Frank O'Hara, which was written in jealous awe after reading Mayakovsky's An Extraordinary Adventure Which Befell Vladimir Mayakovsky in a Summer Cottage. The three poems, the three conversations between the three poets and the sun, look for the reason to get out of bed in the morning. Over a samovar of tea, the Sun tells Vladimir that it is his creative duty to shine as a poet. He berates O'Hara: 'Hey! I've been trying to wake you up for fifteen minutes. Don't be so rude, you are only the second poet I've ever chosen to speak to personally.' And as for Martha, he assures her: 'I'll not measure out any more distress than you'll need to write your poems.'Kiff uses paint as the poets use words. He pushes his bricks of colour together, forcing them to blur and rhyme. His exploitation of complementary colour is second to none. Yet as with poets, the technique and understanding of the language are but tools to reach another place. 'Fantasy, ' he said, 'is a way of thinking about reality.'Kiff made specific paintings in homage to poetry including the 1985 canvas, The Poet Vladimir Mayakovsky Invites the Sun to Tea, 1985-7, but more importantly he had similar aspirations in his art to poetry. He would agree with Gaston Bachelard's dictum that 'The poet does not describe, he exalts.' Kiff needs to depict 'A hundred suns in one sunset.' Kiff was an intellectual, with endless nagging doubts. He was always questioning, and his reasoning was byzantine, circuitous, forever probing, but when it came down to the paintings, he managed to conjure up those hundred and forty in one. Not that this stopped him doubting himself, which is why he embarked on the Sequence, as one painting is never enough. If one wants to engage with the full ambition of Ken Kiff one needs to take the path along the two hundred works in his Sequence, but this little book and exhibition is taking Bachelard's advice. Following Kiff's meandering but always needle-sharp thinking, can distract from the essential simplicity of individual works. Let's just enjoy the paintings, the poems and the hundred suns.

Rudenstine provides the first scholarly study on the historical, art historical, and political context during which Barnes purchased his masterpieces and attempted to redefine aesthetic education. Inspired by his good friend John Dewey's educational philosophy, Barnes held art-appreciation classes for the workers in his factory. His successes there led him to establish the Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania--more as an educational experiment than a typical museum. In 2012, the Barnes Foundation moved to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia. Rudenstine presents the controversial events surrounding the Barnes Foundation's move to Philadelphia, including an analysis of the Foundation's financial plight, a review of the major court cases over the decades, and a characterization of the fervent reactions following the court's decision to allow the move to take place. The House of Barnes chronicles the life and times of an extraordinary collector and the continued endurance of the Barnes Foundation long after the death of its founder. Originally published in 2012, this new edition contains sixteen pages of full-color reproductions of masterpieces from the collection, a new preface from the author, and a foreword from the prominent art historian Yve-Alain Bois.
Feuerman
The most comprehensive illustrated monograph to date on major American artist Carole A. Feuerman, a pioneer of superrealism in sculpture. Carole Feuerman is best known for her figurative sculptures depicting swimmers and dancers. She is the only woman to sculpt in this style, creating lifelike works for both indoor and outdoor spaces. During the rise of postmodernism in the mid-seventies, Feuerman drew inspiration from historical imagery and styles while creating 3D illustrations for prominent magazines and tour publications, featuring rock icons like the Rolling Stones and Alice Cooper. Her debut life casting in 1975, showcased on the cover of the National Lampoon, marked a significant artistic achievement. Transitioning into the late 1970s, Feuerman delved into creating fragmented erotic compositions, adding complexity to her work. As a narrative artist, she infuses her sculptures with symbolic depth, inviting viewers into a dialogue. Informed by postmodernist thought, the 1980s saw Feuerman creating lifelike, full-figure superrealistic sculptures, solidifying her artistic career and legacy. Her passion for water and the ocean stems from her childhood at the beach. Feuerman describes the sensation of water droplets on her skin after swimming and the intricate patterns they formed as captivating. The beach became her sanctuary--a place of escape and tranquility. During a beach outing with her children, she encountered a swimmer with water droplets streaming down her face, radiating a sense of pride and accomplishment. This encounter catalyzed her first swimmer sculpture titled Catalina (1978). This lavishly illustrated book covers Feuerman's entire career spanning five decades, and features more than 200 works.

The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta. 40th Ed.
Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed king of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records (Egyptian Queen sold for $ 5.4 million in 2019) he's long overdue for this ultimate monograph.Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in Brooklyn, 1928, Frazetta was a minor league athlete, petty criminal and serial seducer with movie star looks and phenomenal talent. He claimed to only make art when there was nothing better to do - he preferred playing baseball - yet began his professional career in comics at age 16. Strip work led him to the infamous EC Comics, then to oils for Tarzan and Conan pulp covers. Both characters were interpreted by many before him, but as he explained in the 1970s, "I'm very physical minded. In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him," and he used this first-hand knowledge of muscle and macho to redefine fantasy heroes as more massive, more menacing, more testosterone-fueled than anything seen before. As counterbalance he created a new breed of women, nude as censorship allowed, with pixie faces and multiparous bodies: thick thighed, heavy buttocked, breasts cantilevered out to there, yet still, with their soft bellies and hints of cellulite, believably real. Add in the action, the creatures, the twilit worlds of haunting shadow and Frazetta's art is addictive as potato chips.
Craxton's Cats
A superbly illustrated account of one of the major figures of modern British painting's passion for cats, written with personal knowledge of the artist. By concentrating on a single subject very dear to John Craxton's heart--cats--this volume offers an accessible introduction to this popular artist, who has been championed by David Attenborough and Andrew Marr, among many others. Craxton's significance as an early artist companion of Lucian Freud, his time in Greece, and his collaborations with Patrick Leigh Fermor have generated growing interest in his art.For Craxton, cats were an index of moods and states of mind, and a splendidly apposite vehicle for his visual and verbal wit. Craxton loved cats and lived with them for most of his life. The cat image came readily to mind and hand, whether he was planning a taverna scene in Crete or doodling during a telephone conversation. Cats permeate his art, weaving their way through his paintings, drawings, and prints, bringing humor and mischief to his images, as they did to his daily existence. Affectionate and faithless, they were like so many casual lovers, no better than they should be and gloriously on the make. In many ways, they are a fitting symbol or leitmotif for Craxton's own happy-go-lucky life.A widely accessible introduction to Craxton's work, this delightful book will appeal to the devotee and the uninitiated alike.

Sophie Calle: The Sleepers
Calle's seminal 1979 series of people sleeping in her bed: now in EnglishIn one of Sophie Calle's first artistic experiments, she invited friends, acquaintances and strangers to sleep in her bed. Twenty-seven people agreed, among them a baker, a babysitter, an actor, a journalist, a seamstress, a trumpet player and three painters. Calle photographed them awake and asleep, secretly recording any private conversations once the door closed. She served each a meal, and, if they agreed, she subjected them to a questionnaire that probed their personal predilections, habits and dreams as well as their interpretations of the act of sleeping in her bed: a curiosity, a game, an artwork, or--as Calle intended it--a job. The result, comprising her first exhibition in 1979, was a grid of 198 photographs and short texts.Unlike the original installation, this artist's book version of The Sleepers contains not only all the photographs and captions but also her engrossing, novellalike narrative, untranslated until now. From the single, liminal mise-en-sc癡ne of her bedroom, Calle reports in text and photos, as if in real time, as sleepers arrive, talk, sleep, eat and leave. Their acute and sometimes startling, sometimes endearing particularities merge into something almost like an eight-day-long dream. Many seeds of Calle's subsequent works are embedded in The Sleepers: her exacting and transgressive methods of investigation, her cultivation of intimacy and remove, and her unrelenting curiosity. In this work, as she observes the sleepers, they observe her too--with reciprocal candor. The Sleepers, clothbound and pillow-like, unfolds as it opens, inviting the reader to join the others in Calle's bed.

The reader is invited to experience the subtle shifts in perception and feeling that come with each encounter, whether it be with another person, a place, or a moment in time. Wildwood Devotions
In a world where nature and spirit intertwine, this collection of poetry delves into the profound connections between the human and the wild. With verses that capture the cold stillness of night, the sacred encounters with creatures of the forest, and the silent weight of memory, these poems explore the raw, elemental forces that shape our inner landscapes. The imagery of wolves, owls, and the elusive deer serves as a metaphor for the untamed aspects of our own beings, yearning to be understood, embraced, and transformed. In this hybrid of word and visual poetry (asemics), the poet's voice rises from a place of deep reverence and introspection, offering readers a glimpse into the hallowed spaces where the wild meets the holy.

what are you afraid of?
what are you afraid of? is a sequence of de/reconstructed sonnets derived from the transcript of "interviews" between the software engineer Blake Lemoine and a colleague at Google with LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications). Tasked by Google to investigate the ethics of AI, Lemoine believed that his interaction with the programme suggested it was sentient. After raising these concerns with the tech giant, he was fired and then made the transcript publicly available in June 2022, sparking global discussion about Artificial Intelligence. These sonnets are accompanied with digitally manipulated photos of the author's deconstructed computer, and pose questions regarding the nature of human consciousness and the ethical considerations of machine learning.

Image Making
Long before social media created a surfeit of globally interconnected images, the art world opened its previously narrow confines to include the true diversity of image production. Image Making chronicles Shelley Rice's skillful navigation of two pivotal moments in this transformation: the pluralism of New York in the 1970s and the global outreach of digital networks in the 2010s. As one of our era's most incisive and inspired photography and multimedia critics, Rice's insightful reviews and articles chronicle this seismic shift, offering a deeply resonant exploration of art's intersection with society. Her critical engagement with renowned artists and curators such as Manuel ?lvarez Bravo, Ana Mendieta, Francesca Woodman, Lorraine O'Grady, Duane Michals, Gerhard Richter, Okwui Enwezor, Walid Raad, and Cindy Sherman sets a standard for understanding contemporary art and the vital role a seminal critic plays in shaping our visual culture. Image Making is indispensable reading for anyone interested in contemporary art, the role of criticism, and the deep interdependence of images and social, cultural, and political forces.
