A revelatory study of Georgia O'Keeffe's New York paintings of the late 1920s and their deep significance within the artist's development In 1924 Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) first moved to the Shelton Hotel in New York with her husband, the photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz. The Shelton was Manhattan's earliest residential skyscraper, and its dizzying heights inspired O'Keeffe to create a powerful series of approximately twenty-five paintings and numerous drawings over a span of about five years. She called these "my New Yorks," and they overwhelmingly consist of two types of compositions: sprawling observations looking down onto the city and humbling views directed up at the newly built urban monoliths. Exploring the New York skyline, O'Keeffe resisted the approach of contemporaries such as Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand--who celebrated New York as a streamlined, impersonal series of geometric canyons--and instead portrayed it as an amalgamation of the organic and the inorganic, the natural and the constructed. Only in this way could she express New York (in her words) "as it is felt." Yakasha-e: "Actor pictures from the floating world." Ukiyo, the floating world - a transient realm of pleasures, horrors, and dreams - was brought to life most vividly on the kabuki stage of 19th century Japan, and recorded in yakasha-e, paintings and woodblock prints depicting and most famous actors and most sensational scenes of the day. Perhaps the most famous of all purveyors of yakasha-e was Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900), renowned as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Almost his entire artistic life was dedicated to creating image records of kabuki theatre productions and the actors who starred in them, including such notables as Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V. Land meets Water
Approaching landfall from the sea gives an entirely different perspective and emotional response to that of looking out to sea from the land. Walking on the coast gives one the time to soak up the scenery, frame the vista in your mind and study rather than glimpse. Travelling by car provides the wherewithal to carry easels and art paraphernalia to further destinations not to mention more sustenance! As an artist I am lucky to have experienced all three modes of transport in my ramblings around the south-west coastline. Over a period of many years, I have sketched or painted subjects that have intrigued me, not only from an artistic point of view, but those which include historical interest. Also, I don't know why it is, but when you set up an easel and paint or sketch 'en plein air' other dynamics seem to happen: inquisitive people peer over your shoulder, some people talk to you, stories unfold, unexpected things happen, hence my jottings on each of the following pages accompanying the images. My south-west coastal journey starts in South Dorset at Poole Harbour where I moored my old Westerly Ketch sailing boat at Redclyffe, Wareham, on the River Frome. Austin Spare's lifelong interest in cartomancy is well documented, yet very few of his own fortune-telling cards were thought to have survived. This compelling new example of the artist's early work demonstrates his precocious involvement with the currents that shaped the British Occult Revival at the beginning of the twentieth century, and his interactions with some of the period's artistic and political protagonists including Aleister Crowley, Arthur Ivey, Sylvia Pankhurst, and Pamela Colman Smith. Magic Circle Museum curator and artist Jonathan Allen set about tracing the deck's provenance, its place in the artist's oeuvre, and within the wider histories of cartomancy, in so doing contributing an unexpected counter narrative to the history of popular Tarot in the early twentieth century. Jeremy Frey

Gustave Caillebotte
This richly illustrated volume paints a complex portrait of Caillebotte, masculinity, and identity in late nineteenth-century France. More than any other French Impressionist, painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) observed and depicted the many men in his life, including his brothers and friends, employees, and the workers and bourgeois in his Parisian neighborhood. Male subjects feature prominently in some of his best-known works, such as The Floor Scrapers, Man at His Bath, Young Man at His Window, Boating Party, and Paris Street, Rainy Day. The originality of his paintings of men is fully explored for the first time in this catalogue, published to accompany a major international exhibition co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Mus矇e d'Orsay, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Alongside paintings, drawings, and photographs, as well as an appendix featuring maps and new biographical research that sheds light on Caillebotte's social network, this volume includes historically grounded thematic essays by curators and leading scholars. By exploring the complex and varied facets of Caillebotte's identity--as son, brother, soldier, bachelor, amateur, sportsman, and so on--these essays pose questions of identity, leaving space for ambiguous and fluid expressions of gender and masculinity--for both Caillebotte and the larger late nineteenth-century French world. This catalog documents an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Brice Marden, on view at Gagosian Madison Avenue from November-December 2023. The works in the exhibition comprise the artist's last paintings and related works on paper. Six paintings, completed in spring 2023, feature the artist's familiar looping marks against mostly monochromatic grounds. His final painting, completed just days before his passing on August 10, 2023, includes seven vertical sections, each painted in a single color--a variation on themes he had been exploring throughout his six-decade-long career. An expansive look at the multifaceted American artist Toshiko Takaezu within the history of postwar artmaking Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011) was an American artist whose multidisciplinary work in ceramics, painting, sculpture, weaving, and installation innovatively drew from the natural world, combining expressionist energies with influences from East Asia. The closed ceramic forms for which she is best known are effectively abstract paintings in the round. Rooted in minimal and conceptual art, his work addresses history, art history, modes of meaning and how art can function in the world.Published in conjunction with the first museum retrospective of Sch羹tte's work in the United States in over 20 years, this eponymous monograph presents a holistic overview of his career from 1975 to the present.
