Baroque
"Beauty is an unstable force. It gathers mysteriously even out of its absence, beginning as a transparent sheen, little more than a certain perception of moisture. Out of ugliness even. Like a mold it grows, then like a moss; suddenly it's covered in little petals. It coheres, burgeons, builds, drifts. Shapes form and pile, almost tumble, look as if to tumble, hold, tumble more; the mechanism is crystalline. It loves itself, beauty. It consists almost entirely of love of itself. It burgeons with the force of love of itself into a dozen, a hundred, a thousand petals, and the petals harden into facets, a thousand facets, facet upon facet, all glinting and flashing for one another, for the benefit of one another's praise." Baroque is a collection of three essays exploring the arc between nature and artifice. The first essay, "On Nature Writing," is a meditation on the rhythms of the natural world and its fundamental insusceptibility to the bonds of human language. "Doctrine of the Affections," an essay in images, uses collage to juxtapose the natural and the built environment, photographic and painterly realities, the material present and the mirage of the historical. "Baroque" considers the decorative impulse as it pertains to the history of Western art and architecture as well as conceptions of female beauty, posing the question: What is really going on at the surface?Baroque is the fourth in a series of artist books to be published by Holly Myers through then/and publications, after Road Noise, Wild Rough Country and Heidelberg. Deleuze and the Map-Image
The map, as it appears in Gilles Deleuze's writings, is a concept guiding the exploration of new territories, no matter how abstract. With the advent of new media and digital technologies, contemporary artists have imagined a panoply of new spaces that put Deleuze's concept to the test. Deleuze's concept of the map bridges the gap between the analog and the digital, information and representation, virtual and actual, canvas and screen and is therefore best suited for the contemporary artistic landscape. Deleuze and the Map-Image explores cartography from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives and argues that the concept of the map is a critical touchstone for contemporary multidisciplinary art. A brief history of how I evolved into a full time professional artist is in order. It might even encourage others that were in my situation to do the same. My father graduated from art school after high school, but instead of fine art, he took up metal crafting. From early elementary school until I graduated from high school, I worked in his shop. During that time, he always encouraged me with my artistic endeavors.While at the University of Florida there was no time for art and I graduated in 1964. I was commissioned in the USMC and reported for 3 years of active duty. My last year was a tour of duty in Chu Lai, Viet Nam. After discharge as a Captain, I acquired a MS degree at UF and then was accepted in the Auburn School of Veterinary Medicine.In 1972, I entered veterinary practice in Panama City, FL and still live in that area. After about 25 years of full time practice, I started part time in order to pursue my passion for watercolors. Prior to 1972, I worked in oils and acrylics, but then started taking watercolor classes in 1974. Around 2006, I began teaching classes locally and workshops regionally. In 2003, I started my travel journaling in watercolor/pen & ink and hope to continue that as long as possible.I completely retired from veterinary practice in 2018 after Hurricane Michael ravaged our area.Over the years, I became a signature/elected member of 18 major watercolor societies.

Chuck Close: Red, Yellow, and Blue

Published on the occasion of Pace Gallery's first exhibition of the artist's work since his death in 2021, Red, Yellow, and Blue spotlights Close's final body of paintings, which employ a palette of only three colors. Layering transparent glazes of red, yellow and blue paint, Close created an effect of abstract likeness entirely different from that of his previous work. The Coloring Book of Armor
The Coloring Book of Armor showcases a remarkable selection of armor in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, giving artists of all ages the opportunity to explore a wide range of designs from a variety of countries.Initially developed for an eminently practical purpose - to protect the wearer from injury - armor may take the form of body coverings or objects held in the hand. Any material that can serve as a hard shell or cushion was put to use; not just metal, but also bone, leather, and even silk. Armor also fulfilled other functions. When decorated with magical or religious symbols and texts, it could invoke the powerful assistance of outside forces, including gods. Should it fail to deflect harm, it would at least help to save one's soul. When featuring the emblems of a community or a leader, it fostered a sense of belonging. When made of or decorated with precious metals, it denoted rank and resources. Popular motifs included flowers and leaves, birds, winged lions, and geometric patterns. Armor made for horses was effective at evoking the anatomy of mythical beasts such as dragons, thus instilling fear in the enemy. There are more than 30 line drawings for coloring, including a dragon-shaped shaffron (horse's head armor) used in tournaments by the future Henry II of France; the highly decorative suit of armor worn by George Clifford, a favorite of Elizabeth I of England; a 17th-century Japanese helmet in the shape of a sea conch; distinctive armor of chain mail and steel plate from the Indian kingdom of Sindh; and a 19th-century Native American shield of buffalo hide. Photographs of all pieces are provided, allowing you to follow the original coloring - or you may decide to create your own dazzling color schemes. The book also features a concise description of each item, highlighting its origin, materials, and function. In 2019 he established the Ganesh Shivaswamy Foundation, which immediately thereafter partnered with Google Arts and Culture. To commemorate 125 years since the establishment of the Ravi Varma Press, his Foundation launched chromolithographs from his collection on the Google platform. This was inaugurated by Her Highness Shubhangini Raje, Rajamata Ji of Baroda in September 2019. The following year, his foundation commemorated 150 years of the artist's professional career through further exhibits on the Google Arts & Culture platform. He is also the Honorary Curator of the Raja Ravi Varma museum at the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Thiruvananthapuram.

Carmen Cicero: Drawings and Watercolors
Carmen Cicero (b. 1926) is now in the midst of his seventh decade at the cutting edge of contemporary art. His early Abstract Expressionist works of the 1950s, collected by the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and other major museums, later evolved into clearly defined, dreamlike images indebted to Surrealist automatism. In the 1960s, Cicero was one of the first members of the American avant-garde to return to figuration, pursuing, through the 1970s and '80s, a figurative expressionist style. This developed into his more recent "visionary" mode, in which he depicts, with a startling clarity, mysterious scenes animated by multiple contradictory feelings--unfulfilled desires, jealousy, despair, and isolation--as well as a generous dose of humor. Throughout his entire artistic evolution, drawing has remained central to Cicero's practice, allowing him to depict the products of his fertile imagination with a vivid immediacy--a tendency that has continued with his watercolors, which he focused on seriously beginning in 1980. The way things are
Paul Klee spoke of, 'taking a line for a walk' when drawing. In my case it is the drawings that have led whilst I followed to see where they were going; and so one drawing suggested, and led to, another until a story, and for me meaning, emerged. The 'poems' were written independently of the drawings when I was a long way from home, wherever that is. The drawings are made primarily in ink and in my other life I'm an Applied artist working in metal, most often as a silversmith, but at one time or another a jeweller and also in foundries.The title came from reading about Steinbeck's search for a title for, 'of mice and men', which in turn came from Robert Burns', 'Wee timorous beasties.' Another rejected title of his was, 'Something happened, ' and these, and the story, struck a chord with me when reading it whilst putting the drawings together for the book.
Hokusai's Fuji
Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and the three volumes of his subsequent One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji show his fascination with a single motif: Mount Fuji. Hokusai's near-obsession with Fuji was part of his hankering after artistic immortality. In Buddhist and Daoist tradition, this mountain was thought to hold the secret to eternal life, as one popular interpretation of its name suggests: fu-shi ("not death"). Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji was produced from 1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the height of his career. Among the prints are three of the artist's most famous: The Great Wave of Kanagawa; Fine Wind, Clear Morning; and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit. By the time he created his second great tribute to Mount Fuji, three volumes comprising One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, he was using the artist names "Gakyo Rojin" ("old man crazy for painting") and "Manji" ("ten thousand things" or "everything"). Contrasting the mountain's steadfastness and solidity with the changing world around it, Hokusai depicts Fuji through different seasons, weather conditions, and settings, and in so doing communicates an important message: while life changes, Fuji stands still.Including all illustrations from these two masterful series, Hokusai's Fuji also features many of Hokusai's earlier renditions of the mountain, as well as later paintings. In this way, through Mount Fuji, this volume traces a history of Hokusai's oeuvre.
