Derived from the words miscere and genus in Latin, mestizaje refers to a mixing of the races. In the book Mestizaje, internationally acclaimed artist Kathy Sosa presents a cross-sectional view of Mexican American culture as it is practiced in the centuries-old blended culture of the Texas-Mexico borderlands. C矇zanne, Masters, and Me
During the beginning of the 20th century, the possible connection between Paul C矇zanne's art and Henri Bergson's philosophy was once a legend. However nowadays, few people mention this anymore. When our protagonist left his former career and returned to school in the 1990s, he fell into the world of art. While studying Western art theory, he was fascinated by the parallels between Bergson and the art he researched. Our main character followed the spiritual guidance of C矇zanne and his successors, Matisse and Picasso, and devoted himself to tracing the prospect of this century-old legend. Through many struggles and endless toil, he resolved the mystery in C矇zanne's various paintings (e.g., cardplayers, smokers, still-lifes, mountains, portraits, bathers, etc.). He rediscovered C矇zanne's paintings in detail and found that C矇zanne incorporated three Bergsonian figures (vertical and horizontal lines, cone, and shell) as the composition in two of his famous paintings. Moreover, C矇zanne skillfully embedded Bergson's initials, H.B., in these paintings. He has found the undeniable linkage. This book covers the many predecessors and masters over the past centuries whose collective efforts have led to wonderful artistic discovery. Despite feeling like a child onlooker, our protagonist was honored to participate.
The Visualization of a Nation
On 23 March 1981, Jordi Pujol, President of the Catalan regional government, gave a speech about an art exhibition, Catalunya Avui. Embracing the artistic wealth of Catalonia, Pujol reminded the audience that when they hear of T?pies, Mir籀, Dal穩, and even Picasso they ought to remember their Catalan heritage. Pujol's inclusion of Antoni T?pies (1923-2012) in this company shows the mark T?pies had already made as a celebrated artist. In a very different Presidential address, as Artur Mas spoke to the press about the 2014 independence referendum, T?pies's enormous painting Les quatre cr簷niques (1990) loomed in the background - an image that took on new meanings under very different sociopolitical circumstances.In this fascinating and thought-provoking investigation, Emily Jenkins explores both T?pies's extraordinary style and his journey through Catalonia's turbulent modern history. Despite his complex relationship with the Spanish state, and having shown bold acts of political protest through his art, T?pies has been f礙ted as one of Spain's most successful modern artists. With support from both local and regional governments, the artist opened a museum dedicated to his work in Barcelona in 1990, helping to establish T?pies as a major visual artist in a resurgent Catalonia.Emily Jenkins studied art history at Rhodes College and history at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Les Lalanne: Zoophites
A personal, playful tribute to the Lalannes featuring their signature animal-inspired works as well as some rare collaborative piecesIn 1964, Claude (1925-2019) and Fran癟ois-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008) held their first joint solo exhibition, titled Zoophites: an obsolete French term for invertebrate animals that resemble plants. This would turn out to be a fitting title for their oeuvre, chiefly composed of whimsical renditions of sheep, monkeys, rabbits, birds and more. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of this show, Kasmin presents a revitalized exhibition of the Lalannes' work under the same title. The zoomorphic tables, chairs, sculptures and more are all drawn entirely from the collection of the Lalannes' eldest daughter, Caroline Hamisky Lalanne. The catalog features over 100 color images in addition to archival photographs. Zoophites is also unique in that it documents some rare collaborative sculptures by the artist couple, who shared a home and studio but rarely worked together.
Wallace Berman: Off the Grid
Over 45 works from the California art legend Wallace Berman, including selections from his rare short film AlephWallace Berman (1926-76) was a notorious guru of the 1960s art pantheon. Often cited as a West Coast Beat Generation artist who rubbed elbows with the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Dennis Hopper and the Rolling Stones, his contributions transcend the comparisons of his aesthetic and the associations that he kept. A self-taught artist, Berman was influenced by Surrealism, Dadaism and the Kabbalah, as well as jazz music and the mystical symbols and popular imagery of his time.Berman is best known for his signature motif, which comes from a reappropriated Sony advertisement picturing a hand holding a transistor radio, which he found in 1964. By removing the speaker grill and inserting random appropriated images, the hand shuffles up messages that appear to spring out of the ether. His early use of the gridding technique creates a visual cacophony that barrages the senses.Off the Grid follows the eponymous 2021 show at Totah, a rare East Coast exhibition of Berman's work, which included a screening of his rare short film Aleph (1956-66), followed by a discussion between Tosh Berman (Wallace Berman's son) and Andrew Lampert, moderated by poet Anne Waldman. A partial transcript of this conversation is included in the publication.

Georg Baselitz
Known for the audaciously simple but game-changing strategy of painting the motif on its head, Georg Baselitz has been a consistently challenging artist since the start of the 1960s. His work is always highly charged but surprisingly diverse, beginning with the raw, existential male figures famously removed from his first solo exhibition for indecency, and the series of "Heroes" that portrayed disabled and exposed figures in a destroyed landscape.
