Brancusi's influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and land artists. This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Constantin Brancusi's distinctive scultpural forms, the 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. His central quest was for the 'essence of things', which resulted in purifying a form until only the essence was left. It was Constantin Brancusi's project to strip away the detritus that had accumulated around sculpture, Henry Moore said, and to offer the pure, simple shape. What Brancusi did was 'to concentrate on very simple shapes, to keep his sculpture, as it were, one-cylindered, to refine and polish a single shape to a degree almost too precious.' As well as being a sculptor, Constantin Brancusi was also an accomplished photographer. Quite a few artists (not all of them sculptors) have expressed for Brancusi's photographs, and the way he would set up his sculptures in his studio and photograph them at particular times of the day, when the lighting was just right. They are early examples of installation art (and some of the best, too). Andy Goldsworthy said he admired how Brancusi created the right conditions in his studio so that his work 'comes alive at a particular time of the day as the light momentarily touches it'. For Goldsworthy, Brancusi's works were at their best when they were arranged by the sculptor in his studio and photographed. Somehow, it wasn't quite the same when they were displayed in modern art museums (such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris or the Museum of Modern Art in Gotham, which have important Brancusi pieces). But there is, in fact, a lot going on. Stella limits himself to a narrow set of rules. Like Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, Morris Louis and Mark Rothko, Stella sets himself to explore a few configurations of painting. But these things - the shape of the canvas, internal organization of the stripes, colour of the bands - offer up endless permutations.Frank Stella's paintings are lean, but leanness does not necessarily mean unfeelingness. This is the problem that monochrome painting creates, and Minimal art in general. Certainly Stella is intense: his Black Stripe Paintings, his Protractor series, his copper paintings, his India Birds, are intense works of art. The Frank Stella exhibitions of the late 1980s and early 1990s were affairs, in which one was impressed by a sense of colour and light, a spaciousness to the works, and a huge scale, so that each work dominated the gallery rooms. Stella is in no way a quiet, unobtrusive artist: his paintings are domineering, self-confident, assured of their own effects. Stella has always been an artist who knows what he's doing. His paintings do not lurk in gallery corners, shyly. His paintings announce themselves instantly and powerfully. Stella's June-July 1985 show at the ICA in London was typical: massive multi-media works were squeezed into the ubiquitous sparse white rooms, completely taking over the sedate spaces. A Porn Star Love Life
I didn't plan on making this book, not on bundling up all my blog posts about my life-long fascination with pornography and sex work. And yet now that it's done it makes so much sense, and I would not have wanted it any other way. Of course this is a book that deserves to be in print! Very few women like me, speak up about liking pornography in pretty much the same way men like it. This book gives us, and that includes myself, a voice. But there is something bigger at stake here. Because sex work is still not treated equally to other work. Sex work is never treated as the rest of the service industry, and in film and show business it is not treated like the rest of the entertainment industry. Even though sex work and porn pay significantly better than average, offer autonomy, a flexible work schedule, and they are a great equalizer since no diplomas are required to start and if all legal barriers were taken away, there would be ample opportunities for entrepreneurship. It is also the only line of work where women have a competitive advantage and are generally paid more than men. It would be vanity to think that this book can change the marginalized position of working in the sex industry or as a sex worker. These are merely my own diary entries and stories related to the moments I enjoyed pornography, or was inspired by sex workers. I was merely a consumer, a bystander, someone on Twitter. But now that I am writing the parting words for this book, I can see that the least I can do, is not not talk about it. And share the stories I have written and identify myself as sex-work positive, as one sex worker called it. And as porn-positive. And so it is. Lauren Harteveld 12 September 2021

Georgia O’Keeffe: To See Takes Time
A revelatory new volume on the American modernist's lesser-known works on paper, reuniting many serial works for the first timeRecalling a charcoal she made in 1916, Georgia O'Keeffe later wrote, "I have made this drawing several times--never remembering that I had made it before--and not knowing where the idea came from." These drawings, and the majority of O'Keeffe's works in charcoal, watercolor, pastel and graphite, belong to series in which she develops and transforms motifs that lie between observation and abstraction. In the formative years of 1915 to 1918, she made as many works on paper as she would in the next 40 years, producing sequences in watercolor of abstract lines, organic landscapes and nudes, along with charcoal drawings she would group according to the designation "specials." While her practice turned increasingly toward canvas in subsequent decades, important series on paper reappeared--including charcoal flowers of the 1930s, portraits of the 1940s and aerial views of the 1950s.Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, this richly illustrated volume highlights the drawings of an artist better known as a painter, and reunites individual sheets with their contextual series to illuminate O'Keeffe's persistently sequential practice.Born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) first received critical attention when her breakthrough charcoal drawings were exhibited in New York in 1916. Whistler: Streetscapes, Urban Change

The first of many Bon Jovi inspired books to come, we start at the beginning! With an origin story of becoming a Bon Jovi fan, dropping out, and finding my way back home in 2019. And how, as we all know because of the pandemic, that was NOT the happy end of it! Past eighteen months I fell from grace more often than there are Whoo-hoo-hoos in I'll Be There For You. The Man Who Drew for Beatrix Potter
This book looks at the life of an artist - Ernest Aris In 1916 Beatrix Potter's eyesight was failing and she engaged Aris to undertake 6 drawings for a book that she had in mind. In a bitter twist of fate, an American publisher pirated some other drawings by Aris to illustrate a plagiarised tale of Peter Rabbit. A potential partnership came to an end with Potter confiding in her publishers that Aris was an "artlessly conceited little bounder". Aris was forced to adopt pseudonyms. You will find little recorded about Aris in the Biographies and Compendium's on British Children's authors and illustrators yet he illustrated some 200 children's books. History seems to have passed him by. I have undertaken comprehensive research into the Biography of one of our notable illustrators and hope that you enjoy the journey. Joyce Irene Whalley, formerly of the Rare Books Section of the V&A Museum wrote "When I co-founded the Beatrix Potter Society over 20 years ago, I would not have believed we would still be finding out new information about her work today. You have opened up another window, and I do congratulate you". The author, Judy Taylor Hough MBE, wrote ".......let me congratulate you on an excellent piece of research - an important addition to the Potter saga. I am fascinated to discover that our Mr Aris is a much more interesting man than I had ever imagined." Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights is one of the most enigmatic paintings in the history of western art. Apart from a brief description by an eyewitness in 1517, there are no contemporary records that tell us anything about the original commission of the painting, its placement, function or audience.Reindert Falkenburg now offers a detailed analysis of Bosch's eye- and mind boggling play with pictorial traditions. He argues that the painting was created towards the end of the fifteenth century as a conversation piece for an audience of Burgundian nobles. Elisa Sighicelli: As Above, So Below
Ephemeral photo-works in conversation with a museum's off-display sculpturesItalian photographer and video artist Elisa Sighicelli (born 1968) was invited by the Gallery of Modern Art, Milan (GAM) to curate an exhibition in dialogue with the gallery's repository containing over 800 sculptural objects: a population of plasters, bronzes, marbles, waxes, mutilated bodies and languid female figures that, unbeknownst to the museum visitors, inhabit the basement waiting for a location on the upper floors. Through a series of photographs, Sighicelli reveals surprising formal relationships and silent dialogues in casual juxtapositions: a statue that whispers in the ear of another, a sidelong glance that seems to cross the eyes of a companion, a close contact that suggests a love encounter. Elements such as dust, inventory tags and bubble wrap become crucial nodes of a spontaneous script activated by the artist's gaze on the sculptures.
Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele was a meteor that flashed across the galaxy of Viennese art at the beginning of the last century. Although he lived only twenty-eight years--dying quite suddenly of influenza in 1918 just as World War I came to an end--he left a stunning pictorial oeuvre. Schiele's obsession with sexuality, his own and that of others, made him at once a voyeur and a participant in that sexual imperative which Freud was concurrently plumbing with such unsettling results. The disturbing revelations of Schiele's unmasking portraiture and of the new science of psychology disclosed a collective cultural anxiety during the last years of the crumbling Austrian empire. Schiele was disturbingly dualistic: his provocative explorations of erotica with their startlingly modern sensibilities do not prepare the viewer for the tenderness revealed in his lyrical landscapes and mostly unpeopled town scenes. These emit a haunting loneliness and are related to an obsession with pathos expressed in the artist's melancholy allegories and existential portraits.
Diego Rivera. the Complete Murals
A veritable folk hero in Latin America and Mexico's most important artist--along with his wife, painter Frida Kahlo--Diego Rivera (1886-1957) led a passionate life devoted to art and communism. After spending the 1910s in Europe, where he surrounded himself with other artists and embraced the Cubist movement, he returned to Mexico and began to paint the large-scale murals for which he is most famous. In his murals, he addressed social and political issues relating to the working class, earning him prophetic status among the peasants of Mexico. He was invited to create works abroad, most notably in the United States, where he stirred up controversy by depicting Lenin in his mural for the Rockefeller Center in New York City (the mural was destroyed before it was finished). Rivera's most remarkable work is his 1932 Detroit Industry, a group of 27 frescos at the Detroit Institute of Art in Michigan. This volume features numerous large-scale details of the murals, allowing their various components and subtleties to be closely examined. In addition to the murals is a vast selection of paintings, vintage photos, documents, and drawings from public and private collections around the world, many of which the whereabouts were previously unknown to scholars and whose inclusion here is thanks to the most intense research performed on Rivera's work since his death. Texts include an illustrated biography and essays by prominent art historians offering interpretations of each mural. One could not ask for a more comprehensive study of Rivera's oeuvre; finally his work is the subject of the sweeping retrospective it deserves.

Failure and Success in Equal Parts
A historical novel based around Jules Bastien-Lepage's obsession with the creation of his painting of Joan of Arc that today is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Set against the backdrop of the emergence of the French Third Republic and enmeshed in the political battle between Catholicism and Secularism, the context of the painting as a politically disruptive work is exposed. From Bastien-Lepage's days at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, his establishment of the naturalist school of painting, and involvement with the Royal Academy and Paris Salon, the book follows him to Domremy through to Julian Weir's decision to buy the painting for Erwin Davis.
