Paul Delaroche
Paul Delaroche: Painting and Popular Spectacle explores the connections between painting and an emergent popular visual culture in the early nineteenth century, which included new forms of optical entertainment such as Panoramas and Dioramas and innovation in fields such as illustration, art reproduction, and stage decor. Delaroche's paintings caused a sensation at the Paris Salon, with critics comparing the emotional response they elicited to that of popular melodrama. Yet his appeal to a certain type of spectator lay behind the increasingly hostile criticism to which his works were subjected, and has in our own time led to his uncertain status in the art historical canon. This book focuses on Delaroche's popularity with a newly expanded audience. Lacking in specialist knowledge, but nevertheless keen to engage with and deeply affected by art, the behaviour of this new public prompted lively discussions about who has the right to judge art and on what grounds. Working across disciplinary boundaries, this book proposes a new reading both of Delaroche and of the connections between the arts in this period. The artist emerges as a figure at the cutting edge of an emergent trans-medial popular visual culture in which we see the formation of modern spectatorship.
Failure and Success in Equal Parts
A historical novel based around Jules Bastien-Lepage's obsession with the creation of his painting of Joan of Arc that today is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. During her teen years, Saint Phalle was a fashion model and appeared on the cover of Life in 1949 and, three years later, on the cover of French Vogue. At 18 Saint Phalle eloped with author Harry Mathews and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later to Paris, where she exhibited at the Alexander Iolas Gallery. In 1971 Saint Phalle married Jean Tinguely, and throughout that decade created the public sculptures and parks for which she became celebrated. Saint Phalle died of emphysema in California in May 2002.

How Bowling's sculpture expands and complicates his reputation as a high modernist painterThis is the first publication to examine Frank Bowling's (born 1934) art and ideas in relation to sculpture. An extended essay by Sam Cornish charts his interactions with sculpture since the 1960s, beginning with his shaped canvas Swan (1964), which was first displayed with ribbons and an anchor hanging from it. The text also considers Bowling's time in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when he was involved with debates around Black art and the work of a number of African American sculptors.The book asks how Bowling's sculpture extends our understanding of his pictorial language. Taylor's portraits and allegorical tableaux--populated by friends, family members, strangers on the street, athletic stars and entertainers--display flashes of familiarity in their seemingly brash compositions, which nonetheless linger in the imagination with uncanny detail. In his paintings on cigarette packs, cereal boxes and other found supports, Taylor brings his primary medium into the realm of common culture. Similarly, the artist's installations often recode the forms and symbolisms of found materials (bleach bottles, push brooms) to play upon art historical tropes and modernism's appropriations of African or African American culture. Taken together, the various strands of Taylor's practice display a deep observation of Black life in America at the turn of the century, while also inviting a humanist fellowship that pushes outward from the particular.Raised in Oxnard, California, Henry Taylor (born 1958) took art classes at Oxnard College in the 1980s and studied under James Jarvaise, who became a mentor. From 1984 through 1995 Henry Taylor worked as a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Mental Hospital (a facility that is now California State University Channel Islands) while concurrently attending the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1995. Taylor has had institutional solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1 and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Bettina
Bettina is the first monograph to showcase the work of the previously unsung artist Bettina Grossman, whose wildly interdisciplinary practice spanned photography, sculpture, textile, cinema, drawing, and more. An eccentric personality fully dedicated to her art, Bettina lived in the famous Chelsea Hotel from 1968 until her death in late 2021. In her tiny studio, she produced and accumulated a considerable body of work, much of which has remained unseen and unpublished until now. Her interests ranged from geometric and abstract studies, drawn from observations of people on the street, to pieces that transformed language into graphic, abstract "verbal forms." Incorporating strategies of chance and the abstraction of everyday form through repetition and seriality, Bettina pushed the photographic medium to and beyond its limits. As Robert Blackburn, artist and founder of the Printmaking Workshop, astutely observed of Bettina's work: "The photography, film, sculpture are as one, for the photographic medium is employed not only for documentation but as an endless source of inspiration from which other disciplines emerge--and merge." Ink, Blood, and Linseed Oil
A collection of essays and observations about the art world by artist Robert Williams. With a masterful career spanning decades, Williams has been a part of one of the most influential art movements of the past 60 years. This is a collection of Robert Williams' writings - 66 essays, a prologue, quantitative remarks, manifestos, an introduction by Juxtapoz publisher Gwynned Vitello and a postscript by Dr. Darius A. Spieth of Louisiana State University. The writing in "Ink, Blood, and Linseed Oil" details and expounds Williams' observations of the art world, and its nuances and contradictions. He reflects on the nature of art and being an artist, and the politics, sociology and anthropology surrounding it all. In the early 1990s, Robert Williams persuaded the publisher of skateboard magazine Thrasher to start an art magazine. Juxtapoz magazine launched in 1994 and shook the art world establishment by presenting the popular underground - out with museum shows and in with street art, comix, tattooing, erotic photography, figurative painting, illustration, and more. These art forms were celebrated, and the magazine found a wide and hungry audience. With each issue came an insightful editorial, penned by the godfather of lowbrow, Mr. Bitchin himself, Robert Williams. Among her many achievements, Evylena became the youngest artist to have a painting accepted by the Smithsonian Institute. Evylena's landscapes were her view of the world.
