Originally inspired by the exhibition curated by Douglas Dreishpoon (Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Catalogue Raisonn矇 and Chief Curator Emeritus of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), the book expands upon the original exhibition to include a wide range of important pieces from this prolific period in the artist's career.Through her invention of the soak-stain technique, Frankenthaler expanded the possibilities of abstract painting while referencing figuration and landscape in unique ways. In her later years, her practice continued to evolve through her use of diverse mediums and processes, as she shifted from painting canvas on the floor to using larger sheets of paper that were laid out on the floor or on tabletops for easier accessibility. The continuity between the late work and what came before is striking.Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) has long been recognized as one of the great American artists of the 20th century. She was eminent among the second generation of postwar American abstract painters and is widely credited for playing a pivotal role in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Color Field painting with her invention of the soak-stain technique, which involved pouring thinned paint directly onto unprimed canvas. The juxtaposition of amorphous fields of color and gestural brushstrokes produces a vigorous rhythm of activity that seems to convey both the expanse of landscape and the surface texture of mark-making.

Glady's Peto's Angela
Throughout the early 1920s, each week, in a sequence of panels accompanying the high-society gossip column of "Mariegold," readers of "The Sketch: A Journal of Art and Actuality" got to follow the adventures of an irrepressible Bright Young Thing named Angela.This volume is a collection of Angela's adventures as depicted in the pages of "The Sketch," which was a high-end society magazine published in London, in 1923 and 1924.They are relics of another time. There never was a time in the English-speaking world quite like the early 1920s, especially for women.Just a dozen or two years before, the average woman had been all but enchained - relegated to decorative and reproductive roles in the home.But now, with the Great War over, suddenly women everywhere were on what had to feel like a roller-coaster ride to freedom. Clothing styles had changed to looser things that allowed freedom of movement. Society's attitudes, especially among the young, had shifted in a relative blink of an eye. Women were claiming freedoms that they'd never before had, but which were clearly theirs by right. The old mid-Victorians were apoplectic, and thundered their denunciations from porch and pulpit; the New Woman took pride in their scorn.Today we know how it all ended - not with a bang, but with a whimper, with a flurry of advertisements for cigarettes and other consumer products marketing themselves as the vehicles of emancipation... followed by the Great Depression. Women were driving cars, smoking cigarettes, flirting with young men, starting businesses, running for public office, creating art. Where might it all end? Piet Mondrian: Mondrian Evolution
Celebrating Mondrian's journey from Dutch landscape painter to pioneer of lively, hard-edged abstractionPublished on the occasion of the Dutch artist's 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution celebrates the multifaceted work and artistic development of Piet Mondrian. The artist cemented his place in the art historical canon with his geometric compositions characterized by black lines cast against white surfaces partially filled by the primary colors blue, red and yellow. Indelible as they are, these compositions comprise only a portion of Mondrian's expansive oeuvre. The artist moved through various formal evolutions, corresponding to his various geographical residences, before he arrived at his signature minimalist abstract style. After his classical training in figurative painting, Mondrian departed for Paris, where he immersed himself in the avant-garde currents energizing the city; Cubism, in particular, stimulated his imagination. Taking the movement as a point of departure, Mondrian developed Neo-Plasticism, a nonrepresentational "pure plastic art," which he believed to be the pathway to universal beauty. This monograph diligently traces the artist's progression from landscape painter to abstractionist trailblazer--and all the stops in between. Each chapter homes in on a specific motif within Mondrian's oeuvre, including windmills, dunes, the sea, farms reflected in the water and plants in various forms of abstraction.
Liz Larner: Don’t Put It Back Like It Was
A long-overdue appreciation of the influential sculpture of Liz Larner and its radically adventurous formal and conceptual vocabularyLos Angeles-based sculptor and installation artist Liz Larner (born 1960) was originally a photographer: in some of her earliest projects, she documented the volatility of bacterial cultures in petri dishes. However, she soon realized that she was more compelled by the dishes themselves and how they presented questions about what an art object can entail. Since then, she has continued to pursue her interest in formal unpredictability through a focus on sculpture and architectural space. Composed of a diverse variety of materials, her sculptures frequently function as optical illusions that seem to bend the space around them. Sometimes rigidly technical in their geometry and at other times soft-edged and amorphous, Larner's sculptures are striking both for their fluctuation of form and for their representation of spatial politics.Repositioning her enduring formal and material concerns alongside her relationship to a feminist sculptural position, this monograph offers an opportunity to consider Larner's artistic project within today's expanded discourses of embodiment, gender and posthumanism, and to recalibrate our understanding of it in relation to male-dominated Postminimalism and installation art, which have often underpinned Larner's critical reception. Poet Ariana Reines, cultural critic and theorist Catherine Liu, and curators Connie Butler and Mary Ceruti consider the physical properties and sociopolitical implications of the materials present in Larner's work, which range from ceramic to steel chain to surgical gauze to human hair.

Welcome to my book of Doodle Mind Journeys. These drawings are my therapy, my way of coping with the stress and anxiety of COVID and life. During the pandemic I found myself with a great deal of time on my hands, and I rediscovered art. I finally gave myself the time to indulge in doodling, and through these journeys I found a much-needed brain escape into line, shape, and colour that brought me tranquility amongst all the unknown ahead.I put together a book of my drawings to share with you in the hopes that you too can find escape in my doodle journeys with me, while making them yours by adding your own personal touch with colour. I hope you find them grounding and fascinating, and that they inspire a world of creativity within you. My wish is that you enjoy them as much as I did making them.

Agnes Pelton

Highways, antennas, containers, storehouses, pipes, submarine cables, sensors: the word infrastructure usually refers to "matter that enables the movement of other matter", the underlying organized structures and mediators that support human exchanges and the value people associate with them. Saraceno's dazzling installations synthesize science and art, architecture and art, industry and natureArgentinian installation artist Tom獺s Saraceno (born 1973) combines research on fossil fuel alternatives, the architecture of spider webs and aeronautical engineering to create large-scale interactive sculptures that look toward the future. Point Break: Raymond Pettibon, Surfers and Waves
"All this must be either surfed or painted" This is the underlying sentiment behind Raymond Pettibon's iconic works of surfers and waves in this quintessential volume dedicated to the motif. Pettibon is known for his characteristically enigmatic aesthetic and sharply satirical critiques of American culture. Though drenched in cynicism, his work empathizes with the dizzying madness of our own humanity as it engages both so-called high and low culture. Perhaps most poetic among the many motifs present in Pettibon's oeuvre is the surfer. In 1985, Pettibon began his series of surfers and waves--which he continues to work on to this day--popular for depicting a lone surfer silently carving "a line of beauty" along an impossibly large wave. This book spotlights a selection of more than one hundred surfers from the series, from smaller monochromatic works on paper to colorful large-scale paintings applied directly to the wall. For Pettibon's protagonist in these works, surfing exists apart from all else. Momentarily he achieves sublimity on the wave, distant yet synced with turbulent reality. We are forced to confront our own scale: small and feeble in the face of the power of nature, what is beyond our control. Pettibon's lyrical writings on these painted surfaces--both his own and lines taken from literature--reference his own philosophies and the confusions of reality: he critiques and highlights the hypocrisies and vanities of the world he engages. To help navigate, the scholar Brian Lukacher explores art-historical antecedents in Pettibon's work, particularly the seascapes of J. M. W. Turner, and Jamie Brisick, the writer and former professional surfer, examines the Southern California surf and music culture of Pettibon's youth.
