Beauty Among The Ashes
On November the 8th, 2018, the sleepy artisan town of Paradise in Northern California was hitby the most devastating fire in California history, destroying over 150,000 acres, nearly 19,000structures, and claiming the lives of 85 people. It became known as the Paradise Camp Fire, andit decimated the entire community, leaving very little left but ashes and ruin. The entire worldnoticed.Several months later, an artist named Shane Grammer, who once lived in the area, knewand remembered his friends and family in the region, and he made a pilgrimage back to hisroots, with one purpose: To honor a friend of his, who lost everything. Shane painted a muralon the only thing that was left of his friend's house - a white chimney, barely standing in themiddle of the ruins of their dreams. The mural was called Beauty Among the Ashes and itsuddenly became the sole symbol of hope for the community who had not even begun to pick upthe pieces of their destroyed worlds. The media seized upon the story, and before anyonerealized it, Beauty Among the Ashes was a worldwide rallying cry for the town of Paradise.Hope existed. Even with such a fresh wound, the town, and the world beyond could see thatthere was hope on the horizon.

Eighteen Pieces
David didn't choose to become an artist. He didn't study formally, yearn for it in idle moments, nor plan a change in lifestyle. However, opportunity arose and art appeared, as though stirring from a very long sleep. Big things start out small and before David knew it, he was transported down a road signposted "art".David takes us on a journey into the mysterious heart of a creative world and the wonders of discovery. He has a knack for connecting underlying ideas and principles, shining a light on the enigmatic and creating reverence for its magic. The book includes some practical and enabling ideas: expression, abstraction and rhythm bubble up during the creative process with colour casting life to everything it touches. These flow throughout the pages, creating a powerful motivator for art and art-making as a sustaining part of a fulfilling life.Illuminated by 100 of David's works, this book is a joy for artists, lovers of art and for all who would pursue that creative spark!More than a few people have commented on David's starting point as an Engineer - we are all something-artists: parent-artists, lawyer-artists, athlete-artists and so on. Our world often obscures hidden talent by way of roles and vocations though it was not always so. Art is invariably there, at times under the covers - a latent dimension of life. Art is inside all of us and wherever we are and however it may manifest, it's every bit as much of us as we can dream.

Color World Culture
The 'Color American Indian Art' book in the "World Culture Art Coloring Series," extends far beyond a regular coloring book. There are thirty-eight pages filled with images that are both culturally rich and stunning, complete with a brief historical footnote for each image. Pages also include a synopsis of the art form. Two pages were added on coloring and creating designs and patterns from the elements found in the art form. Images are multifunctional and besides coloring, can be used to create cutouts, masks, and various other crafts. Overall, the images are carefully chosen from wall paintings, sculptures, bas-reliefs, etc. to inspire creativity in the minds of all the participants. A Review on the Educational Value of the World Culture Art Coloring Series by: Dr. Mark Woolmer, Durham University, Department of Classics and Ancient History, Durham, UK, February 2017------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Research has shown that drawing and coloring are vitally important creative outlets for young children as they enable them to become immersed in their own colorful imaginary worlds which can be translated onto paper. Significantly, these activities are not only fun but also support a child's educational and creative development, a fact which Mrinal Mitra, author, and illustrator of the popular World Culture Coloring Series, is clearly cognizant of. His books, which, amongst others, include Color Egyptian Art, Color Phoenician Art, Color African Art, and Color American Indian Art, not only provide depictions of a diverse range of culturally significant artworks (all of which can easily be colored or decorated in a multitude of ways), they also include key pieces of historical or contextual information for each item. The wide selection of artworks included in each book not only serves as an inspiration for creativity but also as an introduction to the unique themes, concepts, and ideas that are prevalent in that particular artistic tradition. The series' skillful blending of creative fun and instructive learning makes these books an invaluable pedagogical resource that can easily be used by both teachers and parents alike. Having integrated one of these coloring books into the educational program of a local museum, I can personally affirm both the popularity of this series amongst children and its pedagogical potential. I look forward to seeing what other cultures will be added to the series in the future.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Poster Art of New Line Theatre
White, a blank page or canvas. So many possibilities. Graphic design for the theatre is a unique art form. It has to communicate a lot of information, much of it subliminal; it has to be attractive and eye-catching; and it has to make the viewer want to know more. That's a lot to ask of a single image. But Kris Wright's poster for New Line Theatre's Anyone Can Whistle in 2001 and Matt Reedy's poster for The Wild Party in 2010, both tell you so much about those shows, and both are really intriguing and enticing. That's what a great theatre poster can do. After all these years, it seems like we should celebrate and preserve the outstanding poster art of New Line Theatre, from 1992 to the present, and the great artists who've designed for us: Tracy Collins, Kris Wright, Matt Reedy, Steve Kutheis, Laura Beard Aeling, Scott Hunt, and Alissa Umansky. New Line Theatre is a professional company dedicated to involving the people of the region in the exploration and creation of provocative, adult, alternative, socially and politically relevant work in the musical theatre. New Line was founded in 1991.

Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition
How the celebrated Surrealist traversed the many movements of 20th-century art with a thrilling disregard for categories and constraintsOver the course of her protean career, Meret Oppenheim produced witty, unconventional bodies of work that defy neat categorizations of medium, style and subject matter. "Nobody will give you freedom," she stated in 1975, "you have to take it." Her freewheeling, subversively humorous approach modeled a dynamic artistic practice in constant flux, yet held together by the singularity and force of her creative vision.Published in conjunction with the first ever major transatlantic Meret Oppenheim retrospective, and the first in the United States in over 25 years, this publication surveys work from the radically open Swiss artist's precocious debut in 1930s Paris, the period during which her notorious fur-lined Object in MoMA's collection was made, through her post-World War II artistic development, which included engagements with international Pop, Nouveau R矇alisme and Conceptual art, and up to her death in 1985. Essays by curators from the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Menil Collection and the Museum of Modern Art critically examine the artist's wide-ranging, wildly imaginative body of work, and her active role in shaping the narrative of her life and art, providing the context for her creative production pre- and post-World War II.Meret Oppenheim was born in 1913 and lived in Germany and Switzerland during her childhood. At the age of 18, she moved to Paris to study art, and there exhibited alongside members of the Surrealist group. Oppenheim returned to Switzerland in 1937, where she trained as a conservator at the Basel School of Design. Already a storied member of the pre-World War II avant-garde, in the last two prolific decades of her life she was embraced by a younger generation of artists for her conceptual approach to art and progressive views on gender. Oppenheim died in 1985.
Home in an Island Garden
In 1978 Nancy moved to an island off the coast of Washington state with her young family, where she and her husband Lewis naively planned to support themselves as artists. This is the story of their adventures together striving for an unlikely success. They worked hard for years to reclaim an old pea farm overrun with rabbits. Between hammering nails, weeding gardens, perfecting their art, and feeding their family they watched their land transform, and their creativity flourish.Their wild land became a splendid garden habitat; a refuge for themselves and for native wildlife ever flowing through.

Turn Your Life Into Art
Over 30 years, San Francisco's underground art scene developed techniques to create magical, impossible, life-changing experiences. Today big corporations are trying to figure out how to spend millions of dollars to do what these artists and anti-artists did using nothing but time, space, and imagination. It was "a movement without a manifesto," with people discovering how it worked through trial and error. Very little was written down - until now. Caveat Magister, widely seen as one of the leading voices of Burning Man's philosophy, has written this book to explain what these experiences were, why they worked, and how you can create your own. You Will Learn: What "psychomagical" experiences are, and why they can have such a powerful transformative effectWhy rag-tag groups of weirdo artists have been so good at peak experience design, and why wealthy corporations filled with equally talented people have done so poorlyWhere "magical art" connects with the work of Jung and the Humanistic psychologists to support personal development and mental health How to create experiences that go beyond design and seem impossible - until you experience them yourself

Who Am I?
The lush surreal illustrations of this book and its short humoristic story telling make it a fun, quick read for all ages and for anyone obliquely interested in our thirst for development and the nature of who we are. Through a poetic parody of human's desires for more of everything, we become aware that such a quest does not bring us any closer to knowing ourselves or seeing, as contemporary scientific or spiritual leaders are telling us: all things and beings of our planet are intimately related, alive and ultimately "One." While each colorful painting alludes to our close relationship with the world, short lines innocently and wryly comment on the predicaments of our lives pertaining to the industrial world, where dream and reality often appear intertwined. Through the shifting identities of forms, this album gives us a glance at our own formless nature and how our excessive wish for love, home, comfort, power, and productivity inexorably transforms our worldview and make us bypass our deep infinite nature, which cannot be contained through words. As some indigenous traditions have taught us: "life is like a dream. One wonders whether it is by living that we dream or by dreaming that we live."
Gustave Dor矇 and the Modern Biblical Imagination
Gustave Dor矇 and the Modern Biblical Imagination explores the role of biblical imagery in modernity through the lens of Gustave Dor矇 (1832-83), whose work is among the most reproduced and adapted scriptural imagery in the history of Judeo-Christianity. First published in France in late 1865, Dor矇's Bible illustrations received widespread critical acclaim among both religious and lay audiences, and the next several decades saw unprecedented dissemination of the images on an international scale. In 1868, the Dor矇 Gallery opened in London, featuring monumental religious paintings that drew 2.5 million visitors over the course of a quarter-century; when the gallery's holdings travelled to the United States in 1892, exhibitions at venues like the Art Institute of Chicago drew record crowds. The United States saw the most creative appropriations of Dor矇's images among a plethora of media, from prayer cards and magic lantern slides to massive stained-glass windows and the spectacular epic films of Cecile B. DeMille. This book repositions biblical imagery at the center of modernity, an era that has often been defined through a process of secularization, and argues that Dor矇's biblical imagery negotiated the challenges of visualizing the Bible for modern audiences in both sacred and secular contexts. A set of texts whose veracity and authority were under unprecedented scrutiny in this period, the Bible was at the center of a range of historical, theological, and cultural debates. Gustave Dor矇 is at the nexus of these narratives, as his work established the most pervasive visual language for biblical imagery in the past two and a half centuries, and constitutes the means by which the Bible has persistently been translated visually.

- A.I
From the creators of almost.inspirational and some of the #yougetit movement comes their first book. Wise people used to have pithy sayings that would give them insight or inspiration to keep going in life. One of those sayings says, "If you give a man a fish they would come to you for a fish every day, but if you teach them how to fish they would be able to take care of themselves for the rest of their lives." (Not a direct quote) We couldn't agree more. We have realized that inspirational quotes are the equivalent of just handing people fish. They will always come back for more, thus never really inspiring them to do anything. We came to the conclusion that inspiration must evolve, we can't keep trying to do it like we have for the last few centuries, we must begin to think entirely differently about inspirational quotes. So we asked ourselves, "What could inspire average people? Is it even possible to truly inspire?" We decided after months of conversational research with each other that the best way to go about this was to craft quotes specifically meant to almost inspire people. Thus making the average person have to work for inspiration. We didn't want to just spoon feed people inspiration or just "hand them a fish" if you will, after all where has that gotten us? This book is meant to give you almost a half year's worth of quotes that don't inspire you, but they almost inspire you. But the beauty of this book is that somehow you begin to root for the quotes' significance. You find yourself beginning to try to inspire the quote to become inspirational, hence teaching you how to inspire yourself without you even knowing it. Some call it reverse psychology, we just call it helping others. We have strategically developed this book to get you on the path to becoming inspirational yourself and not just relying on an outside source to inspire you all the time. This book causes you to work for inspiration before you even know you are working for inspiration. Not only that, but at the end of this book you will see multiple blank pages where you can begin to write your own quotes. What better way to become inspirational than writing down your own great inspirational thoughts. So be sure to put this book in a place where you sit and think for a little while without a distraction. The only thing that we ask of you is that after you finish this book, you pass it on to someone else that needs to stop reading inspirational quotes and actually become an inspirational person. After all, someone looked at your inspirational deficiency and believed that you could start inspiring yourself. Instead of handing you a fish your whole life, they believe you could become a fisherman of your own inspiration.
George Cruikshank
One of the most important British graphic artists of the nineteenth century, George Cruikshank (1792-1878) illustrated over 860 books, including several by Charles Dickens, and produced a vast number of etchings, paintings, and caricatures. The ten essays collected here first appeared in a special limited edition. In a new preface written for this paperback edition, Robert Patten shows how the insights of these seminal essays have been amplified by recent exhibitions and scholarship. The introduction by John Fowles has been retained and an index has been added. In addition to the many Cruikshank illustrations reproduced in the volume, there are original drawings by contemporary artists David Levine and Ronald Searle.
Faith in Adultery
It is the middle of winter and Iris Angel is getting lonelier as the temperature drops. She is almost 27 years old and most of the people she knows are engaged, married, or have had children. She has spent her life up until now focusing on her career and decides that it is now time to start taking her love life more seriously. However, London, Ontario, can drop down to minus 40 degrees in the winter, so she knows she must act fast.It isn't long before Iris meets Adam Black, the man of every woman's dreams. He is perfect: good looking, the same age as her, and successful. What none of the characters in this story realize is that they are about to embark on one of the messiest relationships of the 21st century. At some point, each of the characters plays their role in the act of an affair. It is impossible to reprimand any one single person participating in the affair. It becomes clear that this is an issue of society, and we need to start looking at it through a new lens in order for that to change.Faith in Adultery is a satire on modern relationships and the main tool we can use to both strengthen a relationship as well as destroy one: communication. To have faith in adultery is to believe in the truth and strength of the love we have for ourselves, each other, and God, no matter what happens. The question that this book raises in particular is: How can we learn to communicate better with each other in order to avoid the complications the story poses? The answer to this question is not a simple one, but as the story unfolds, there are clues given to the reader as to the valuable lessons contained within every answer.
The Instaglitch Project
This book presents a selection of 52 full color images from Michael Betancourt's "Instaglitch Project" that exploited the aberrant and unheimlich results of image handling and processing by the Instagram photosharing app-it derived novel examples of Glitch Art from the faults inherent to the iPhone system. This project uses these inconsistencies as a mechanism for aesthetic creation that provides evidence for the fantasy of control that the "walled garden" of apps create. The development of the Instaglitch offers a counter to this hegemonic ideology via a studio practice that exploits the Instagram app's very limited 'degrees of freedom' without altering the app itself or employing less restrictive software. These works are examples of how repeated processing and 'filtering' of the same image within the same system-a feedback loop-magnifies the instabilities inherent in its operations. The 2,600 works in this series of static images demonstrates programmatic failures that are masked by its normal use, but are systemic instabilities-their identification allowed me to generate works by manipulating their impacts on a blank (white) image.

Yoshitomo Nara
Three decades of the beloved Japanese artist's paintings, drawings, sculptures and moreYoshitomo Nara is among the most beloved Japanese artists of his generation. His widely recognizable portraits of menacing figures reflect the artist's raw encounters with his inner self. Nara's oeuvre takes inspiration from a wide range of resources--memories of his childhood, music, literature, studying and living in Germany (1988-2000), exploring his roots in Japan, Sakhalin and Asia, and modern art from Europe and Japan. Spanning 35 years (1985 to 2020), this book--which accompanies the major career retrospective organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art--presents the full range of Nara's work. It also examines the artist's work through the lens of his longtime passion--music--and features "liner notes" written by the artist about various albums in his personal collection of 1960s and 70s folk and rock albums, published in English for the first time. The book features paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramic figures, an installation that re-creates his drawing studio, and never-before-exhibited idea sketches that reflect the artist's empathic eye, shining a light on Nara's conceptual process. Readers will see the evolution of a dynamic artist who has become more contemplative with age. Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Aomori, Japan, and graduated with a master's degree from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and later studied at Kunstakademie D羹sseldorf. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work. He is represented by Pace Gallery and Blum & Poe.
Jos矇 Moya del Pino
A fully illustrated in-depth look at the fascinating life of a Spanish artist, sent on a cultural mission by the king of Spain then abandoned by his homeland, who reinvented himself in the US as a muralist, painter and teacher.Jos矇 Moya del Pino's life was divided into two completely separate halves; the first one took place in Spain between 1890 and 1925; the second began in 1925 with his trip, without return, to America. This book includes many figures, photographs, illustrations, and details never published before about the life and works of this almost-forgotten artist.Moya del Pino's life was never dull. After running away from home at age 11, he received acclaim as a book illustrator in Spain and France, then convinced king Alfonso XIII to send him around the world on a cultural mission for the crown, copying all of the works of Vel獺zquez in the Prado Museum of Madrid to bring them to the new world and promote the great art and culture of his home country.Stranded in California when the king's support faltered as Spain was on the brink of a civil war, he made inroads into the high society of San Francisco to become a sought-out portraitist and muralist. His mural in Coit Tower and many of those painted under the tutelage of the WPA under the New Deal are still viewable in post offices throughout California; for some, such as those covering entire buildings for the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939, only sketches remain. The artist enjoyed friendships with Diego Rivera, Matisse and other prominent artists, and always lived his life fully and with exuberance. Those who knew the first part of Moya del Pino's life almost completely ignored what happened in the second, to the point that most biographical notes published in Spain end in 1925, as if the painter had disappeared from the universe without a trace. On the other hand, those who shared the second stage of his life, in the San Francisco Bay Area, only knew of his work in Spain that he copied the works of Vel獺zquez and made portraits of Alfonso XIII and the Duke of Alba. This book aims to put an end to these incomplete perspectives, uniting into one biography the artist's two lives.

Liz Finch: The Romance of Bricks
A portrait of Finch's life and art, and a glimpse into the private world of the artistOriginally a film by avant-garde filmmaker Nichola Bruce, The Romance of Bricks is a portrait of British painter, performer and poet Liz Finch (born 1951). The book is a screenplay of the film, weaving the commentary of friends and figures such as Jools Holland, Brian Clarke and Martin Harrison with reproductions of Finch's art. From her life-changing accident and rural solitude to the mad social whirl of anarchic performances in '80s London and up to the present day, The Romance of Bricks sews together archival film over many years to produce an intriguing glimpse into the private world of the artist.Finch's figurative work explores themes of the unconscious based on early childhood perception and a preoccupation with the ordinary. She subverts the norm to see things as they are, not by the usual conventions. The result is humorous, somewhat haunting and poetic.
Sophie Calle: The Hotel
A forensic conceptualist's inventory of the ordinary and extraordinary lives in a Venetian hotel In 1981 Sophie Calle took a job as a chambermaid for the Hotel C in Venice, Italy. Stashing her camera and tape recorder in her mop bucket, she not only cleans and tidies, but sorts through the evidence of the hotel guests' lives. Assigned 12 rooms on the fourth floor, she surveys the state of the guests' bedding, their books, newspapers and postcards, perfumes and cologne, traveling clothes and costumes for Carnival. She methodically photographs the contents of closets and suitcases, examining the detritus in the rubbish bin and the toiletries arranged on the washbasin. She discovers their birth dates and blood types, diary entries, letters from and photographs of lovers and family. She eavesdrops on arguments and love-making. She retrieves a pair of shoes from the wastebasket and takes two chocolates from a neglected box of sweets, while leaving behind stashes of money, pills and jewelry. Her thievery is the eye of the camera, observing the details that were not meant for her, or us, to see.The Hotel now manifests as a book for the first time in English (it was previously included in the book Double Game). Collaborating with the artist on a new design that features enhanced and larger photographs, and pays specific attention to the beauty of the book as an object, Siglio is releasing its third book authored by Calle, after The Address Book (2012) and Suite V矇nitienne (2015).Sophie Calle (born 1953) is an internationally renowned artist whose controversial works often fuse conceptual art and Oulipo-like constraints, investigatory methods and the plundering of autobiography. The Whitechapel Gallery in London organized a retrospective in 2009, and her work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine, London; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others. She lives and works in Paris.

Frank Walter
This publication has been produced to accompany an exhibition staged by Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh, for the 2021 Edinburgh Art Festival. The exhibition is the first devoted to Frank Walter's 'spools' - the small circular paintings which, in their consistency of scale and form, provide a lens through which to witness the workings of Walter's inner eye.Walter's work was unknown during his lifetime, but in the decade since his death he has emerged as one of the most distinctive and intriguing Caribbean voices of the last fifty years. Painted with a rare directness and immediacy on whatever material came most readily to hand, his works describe a visionary artist rooted in the landscape of Antigua, the island of his birth. The publication, co-published by Ingleby, Edinburgh, and Anomie, London, features contributions by Barbara Paca, Professor Paget Henry, Kenneth M. Milton and Mary-Elisabeth Moore. Edited and produced by Ingleby, the publication has been designed by Joanna Deans / Identity and printed by Graphius, Ghent.Frank Walter (1926-2009) was born Francis Archibald Wentworth Walter on Horsford Hill, Antigua. He spent much of the 1950s travelling in Scotland, England, and West Germany. While in Europe, Walter pursued various creative activities including drawing, painting, and creative writing. Walter returned to the Caribbean in 1961, where he began a prolific output of painting, drawing, writing, sculptural work, photography, and sound art.Walter's work was first exhibited alongside paintings by Alfred Wallis and Forrest Bess in the exhibition 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' at Ingleby Gallery in spring 2013. A solo exhibition of his work was presented by The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin, in summer 2013 and later that year, Ingleby Gallery presented a solo display of Walter's paintings at Art Basel Miami Beach. A major solo exhibition followed at Ingleby Gallery in spring 2015. In 2017, Frank Walter represented Antigua and Barbuda at the Venice Biennale in the show 'Frank Walter: The Last Universal Man 1926-2009'. A solo presentation of Walter's work also took place at Harewood House, Leeds, UK, in the summer of 2017. A major retrospective of the artist's work was displayed at both MMK Museum of Modern Art Frankfurt in 2020 and at David Zwirner, London, in the spring of 2021.
