John Leslie Breck
John Leslie Breck (1860-1899) was one of the founders of the American art colony at Giverny and was among the earliest American artists to embrace the Impressionist style. He was also one of the first to exhibit his Impressionist paintings in America and helped to popularize the style during his years working in the Boston area in the 1890s. Between 1887 and 1888 he and a handful of his American colleagues began visiting the French village of Giverny, where they met Claude Monet and subsequently explored the new approach to painting that Monet had helped to pioneer. Breck's canvases from this period, loosely brushed and filled with light and color, are a marked departure from his earlier works that are characterized by darker tonalities and tighter brushwork that typified the preferred style of the era. When Breck returned to America in 1892, he applied what he had learned to paintings of the New England landscape and frequently exhibited his work. Inspired by The Mint Museum's 2016 acquisition of John Leslie Breck's canvas Suzanne Hosched矇-Monet Sewing, this volume includes approximately 70 of Breck's finest works, drawn from public and private collections. Along with his scenes of Giverny and America, this volume features a selection of paintings from his sojourn in Venice in 1897. Always interested exploring in new ways of seeing the world, Breck had begun to explore aspects of post-Impressionism and Asian aesthetics in the years before his early death, at the age of 39, in 1899. This volume also features up to 36 additional comparative images, including details, photographs, and paintings by Monet and other leading American impressionists including Willard Metcalf, Theodore Robinson, Lila Cabot Perry, Childe Hassam, and Arthur Wesley Dow, presented throughout the main essays and chronology and appendices.
Diary Leaves
Nicholas Roerich (1874-1947) is known first and foremost as a painter. His paintings, of which there are thousands around the world, explore the mythic origins, the natural beauty, and the spiritual strivings of humanity and of the world. But Nicholas Roerich was as prolific a writer as he was a painter. He wrote books, poetry, and almost-daily essays on life and events (called Diary Leaves). Many of these writings have been unavailable for decades. They will therefore be new to many readers. It is our hope that bringing these volumes to light again will expand awareness of the vast range and depth of Roerich's interests and insights into human nature and cultural history.

Finding Myself in Salvaged Layers
More often than we realize, things discarded-objects, ideas, people-can be salvaged; given a new life if we pause a moment to see beyond our familiar lens to their true beauty and essence. While every life is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, artist Sharon Mirtaheri found a way to salvage her own self-worth through the layers of making art. Her story encourages us to rise above circumstances that would just as easily keep us small; to turn to the unconditional love of nature; to give of our own gifts to those less fortunate and to come to understand no one can believe in ourselves for us.Sharon takes us through her discovery of encaustic collage and shares stories of the life that inspired the art; how she uses her personal metaphoric library of symbols-birds, trees, plants-to heal deep wounds; questions based on principles of design that every artist can ask him- or herself about any composition, as well as an in-depth tour of her own encaustic-painting process.

Dara Birnbaum: Note(s): Work(ing) Process(es) RE: Concerns (That Take on / Deal With)
The working notes of the influential video artist behind Technology/Transformation: Wonder WomanThis facsimile edition of Note(s): Work(ing) Process(es) Re: Concerns (That Take On / Deal With) was completed in 1977 as a single handmade copy by the multimedia artist Dara Birnbaum (born 1946). It includes notes for works such as Attack Piece, Mirroring and Pivot: Turning Around Suppositions, where Birnbaum interrogates the role of mass media in contemporary society and its means of production through sketches, transcripts, photographs and diagrams for installations and videos that take as their subject film clich矇s, gender roles, patriotism, emotional states and psychology, among others. Note(s) documents her contributions to the burgeoning Conceptual art movement and underscores her significant but under-recognized influence upon the emergence of feminist art, video art and the Pictures Generation.
100 Cups of Compassion
For decades, I have been creating little paintings or doodles of coffee and or teacups. They started out so organically as a way to loosen up my brush strokes when I was painting something complicated like a human being. The doodles evolved into a massive body of work that always left me asking, "What are these things and where are they coming from?" They just kept coming! I kept painting them.Community and compassion. Those two words became the foundation for these cup paintings. In the beginning, I would sit for hours in coffee shops around Florida and paint. If I heard of someone having a bad day I would give them a painting. I would also blog about the experience. As my blog went out into the world, people would contact me, to inquire about acquiring a painting. I always responded, but being compassionate did not always come easy. I, as a human, grappled with taking one of my creations and just handing it over to a complete stranger. I put several hours of my time and energy into these paintings and in some cases, because of pride, I simply didn't want to GIVE them away! What if my creation ended up in a garbage can or worse, a garage sale!? This is when I would hear God speaking to me about the Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5.God was revealing to me that my pride was causing me to not share the gift and talent that he had given me. I believe God breathed life into these paintings and I believe it is his direction leading me to and through the creative process. Each painting was painted with love, pain, sadness, happiness, struggle and frustration. They have found homes all around the world-- from North Africa to Cuba to Mexico and all across this beautiful country. They are meant to brighten someone's day, to uplift and to encourage. Each one of these paintings picked its current owners. At least that is the way it usually happens. I hope you enjoy this little book, read some of God's words, write in it, paint in it, create with it and share it with friends and family.
The Visualization of a Nation
On 23 March 1981, Jordi Pujol, President of the Catalan regional government, gave a speech about an art exhibition, Catalunya Avui. Embracing the artistic wealth of Catalonia, Pujol reminded the audience that when they hear of T?pies, Mir籀, Dal穩, and even Picasso they ought to remember their Catalan heritage. Pujol's inclusion of Antoni T?pies (1923-2012) in this company shows the mark T?pies had already made as a celebrated artist. In a very different Presidential address, as Artur Mas spoke to the press about the 2014 independence referendum, T?pies's enormous painting Les quatre cr簷niques (1990) loomed in the background - an image that took on new meanings under very different sociopolitical circumstances. In this fascinating and thought-provoking investigation, Emily Jenkins explores both T?pies's extraordinary style and his journey through Catalonia's turbulent modern history. Despite his complex relationship with the Spanish state, and having shown bold acts of political protest through his art, T?pies has been f礙ted as one of Spain's most successful modern artists. With support from both local and regional governments, the artist opened a museum dedicated to his work in Barcelona in 1990, helping to establish T?pies as a major visual artist in a resurgent Catalonia.Emily Jenkins studied art history at Rhodes College and history at Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. She is now an independent scholar in Cantabria.
Arthurian Legend in the Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries
The King Arthur we imagine did not exist in history. He is the result of stories told and retold, changed and added to by storytellers for centuries, each making the story reflect the storyteller's time and values. The chapters in this book look at movies, manga, comic books, a television show, and traditional books released since 1960 to explore some of the ways King Arthur has been reimagined in the past 60 years. Interpreting Avalon High and The Kind Who Would Be King, Camelot 3000 and King Arthur vs. Dracula, Fate/Zero, John Steinbeck's The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights, the influence of Arthurian legend on Harry Potter, Terry Gilliam's The Fisher King, John Boorman's Excalibur, Jerry Zucker's First Knight, Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur, Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service, Iris Murdoch's The Time of the Angels, and the BBC series Merlin, the authors find that while we are still interested in the idea of King Arthur, we may also want his story to be more racially and gender inclusive, less elitist, and in some cases, more secular.

Exploding Cinema 1991 - 1997
The Exploding Cinema is a collective of artists that produce what can be described as a hybrid fusion of projection, performance and social space. It began in South London in late 1991. Architectural spaces, transformed with the use of slides and loop film projections are used as an environmental context for a programme of short films and video. A 'master of ceremonies' sets up a dialogue with the audience and introduces the films. He or she encourages filmmakers who are present to speak or be questioned. The audience are encouraged to make films themselves and invited to show them at future Exploding events with a promise that nothing will be rejected. By thoughtful programming this inclusive process of soliciting material, along with a printed programme and the work of members of the group who provide slides and film loops to decorate the space, results in a varied and lively programme which regularly attracted lively audiences of 100 - 300.Using several research methodologies I try to capture a rich body of information about this open artists collective from different angles. The idea is to record the cultural and political value of this groups actvities. Artists collectives are barely represented in mainstream knowledge, so I saw this work as being of use in the inclusion of future study of such complex groups. My assumption was that open collectives offer a platform to those excluded from the establishments more exclusive cultural platforms. There is often a focus on oral traditions of culture as against literary traditions.
Into the Mystic
Using colored pencils, photocopies, acrylic paint, and pen and ink, I set out in 2008 to explore the realms of the mystics by following my imagination and intuition. This collection is a small selection of the work involved in doing this exploration. Each piece is a meditation of sorts on the subject of mysticism, whether that's found in the stars, in the leaves and roots of the World Tree, or in a spread of tarot cards. - Jon Christopher
A Collector’s View of Collecting Art
This book was prepared by researching publicly available information, selected references, published books and from information obtained from artists. I have had the pleasure of knowing many of the painters and sculptors personally and over many decades; much of the information presented in this book is from them. The art depicted was all in my collection, although some pieces have been sold, most have been gifted - donated to museums and other institutions - prior to the completion of this book. I thank all of the artists who created the art that has given me utmost pleasure over many years. I have wonderful memories of time spent with the artists who became my friends. Additionally, I thank all those who appreciated my art collection and helped with the downsizing. This painful experience was somehow lessened, as the art is now in good hands, to be enjoyed by many now and in future generations. Foremost, I acknowledge my wife, Jere, who has been a partner in my life; she is the one who has endured all the toils, trials and tribulations of my collecting art, and to share with me our great journey of the "Art of Living with Art."

Star Wars is finally telling women *cross out* everybody to start enjoying The Thing
As I am editing this, it is strange for me to reread this book; A collection of deeply personal posts that described how important the sequel trilogy was for me, in what was probably the darkest time of my life. The first post is written on 28 January 2018, a little over two weeks after my cat Max died, who had been suffering from explainable an unexplainable ailments since spring 2016. Our relationship had become symbiotic. 2017 Had been an emotional year. My best friend migrated to the United States and I knew it would be the last holiday season my cat Max would be with me. It was also the year The Last Jedi came out, in December 2017. I impulse-attended it, and I was blown away. I fell in love with the dark side warrior Kylo Ren and I went to see it again and again. I brought all my friends, and if they didn't know Star Wars I would give a 30 minute-crash course in the lobby of cinema, so that they went in prepared. In total I saw The Last Jedi 8 times in the theater, in the final weeks around Max's death. After Max died, I ordered a Kylo Ren doll who became my companion. I also bought The Force Awakens on dvd and when The Last Jedi came out on dvd I bought that one too. Just like other fans I, I had my eyes on the horizon, on December 2019 when the last installment of the trilogy would premiere. It would also be the month my love relationship ended. It is around those moments, early 2018 and December 2019, that these diary entries and stories were written. And rereading them, I think it is safe to say having this topic, this interest, and something to hold on to for two years, is what got me through. The Star Wars sequel trilogy and the talking Kylo Ren doll, saved me. May the Force be with you. Always. Lauren Harteveld 18 August 2021
The Beach, C.
The morning detective Nick Curran wakes up, played by Michael Douglas, he finds a note on the pillow next to him. It reads in a steady handwriting: the beach C And it is from Catherine Tramell, a mysterious writer played by Sharon Stone, with whom he has spent the night. "The beach" from the note, refers to her villa in Stinson; A 50 minute drive from the San Francisco mansion, where Nick just woke up after what he called "the fuck of the century". Although I have loved the movie Basic Instinct (1992) since its release, it took until 2018, when the first posts of this book are dated, before I saw the resemblance between Catherine and me. Before I saw that I did have Catherine's cool. I shock people, even though I do not actively, as in a verb, shock people. My presence brings an unease that I have spent my entire life, trying to socialize away. The difference between Catherine and me, was that she did not try to smooth it out and poured some fuel on the fire instead. It took me until 2018, before I saw my relationship with my lover mirrored her relationship to Nick Curran. That we shared a love for games, an unavailability to play life at an ordinary level. It took me until 2018, before I started to understand that my fascination for her had always been way more than a love for stylish clothes and a VIP lifestyle. That even in 1992, what I had seen in her? Was me.
Disorders at the Borders; In Search of the Gesamtkunstwerk in the Paintings of Anselm Kiefer
Although Anselm Kiefer's work is routinely compared with the Gesamtkunstwerk, the 'total work of art' pioneered by Richard Wagner, this book investigates the highly ambivalent relationship between these two artists. Their views on art and society, individualism and counter-Americanism are all explored.
The Awakening of Islamic Pop Music
Awakening - an Islamic media company formed in London - has created the soundtrack to many Muslim lives during the last two decades. As the company celebrates their first 20 years in the industry, Jonas Otterbeck examines their remarkable rise to success and their established reputation as one of the most important global enterprises producing pop music inspired by Islam. Otterbeck thoroughly describes the history and development of new Islamic popular music genres, in particular pop-nashid and Islamic pop, for the first time. He argues that Awakening - a company with the ambition to portray itself as Islamic - is best understood in relation to the ethical turn in Islamic thinking. In this way, he explores how the Islamic pop industry is, in effect, altering the very formulations of Islamic thought.

A Chorus of Canines
A visual concerto of dogs in watercolors, oils, ink, and more by Laura GarabedianThis book is a celebration of the artist's love of dogs, especially of sighthounds.Sighthounds are evocative subjects to draw. Their lean forms are a lovely juxtaposition of hard lines and soft curves, attenuated limbs, and their huge eyes and wonderful expressions just beg to be painted.

Dana Claxton
On Dana Claxton's multimedia investigations of colonialism's destructiveness and the resurgence of First Nation cultureDana Claxton (born 1959) is a critically acclaimed, award-winning artist and filmmaker working across film, video, photography, single and multichannel video installation and performance art. Her practice investigates the body, the socio-political and the spiritual within realms of indigenous beauty. This book consolidates our understanding of Dana Claxton's dominant and recurring themes--indigenous history, culture, beauty and spirituality. While Claxton's art often alludes to the destructive legacy of colonialism, it also celebrates the resurgence of First Nations' presence and contemporary identity. What emerges is an artist delivering works of ever greater power and conviction. With her expansive and genre-defying practice--photography, videos, mixed-media installations, text works, performances and curatorial work--she continues to critically reimagine the space of the gallery to be accessible for wider Indigenous audiences and to uphold new understandings of beauty.

Dual Nature
Dual Nature is the first monograph to explore the remarkable life and career of American artist Jane Rosen, whose work in stone, glass, and on paper spans more than four decades. Born and raised in New York, Rosen established her reputation as a keen observer and interpreter of the modern world in the high-energy, experimental art scene of the 1970s and 1980s SoHo and Greenwich Village. In 1989, she took a leave from city life and rented a home situated on a ranch in Northern California. Her bold decision to escape the familiar and work closer to nature would dramatically expand her art -- forever reinforcing the "dual nature" of her rich creative life, influenced by both East Coast and West Coast, culture and nature, minimalism and imagery. In more than 180 photographs, including many pages from Rosen's personal journals, Dual Nature reflects on the range of the artist's most important work and most meaningful influences -- including family, friends, mentors, students, and the hawks, foxes, horses, and beloved rescue dogs she has encountered in a life of constant artistic exploration.
Inside the Rainbow
Having immersed himself over many years in reading every commentary he can find on Revelation, and picking up his teenage hobby of painting, Pieter Kwant reverses the process whereby John first "saw" Revelation before writing it down, here moving from (biblical) text to image. In this, Pieter takes his stand on the shoulders of both giant biblical commentators and visual artists over the centuries as he engages Revelation in a personal way. His hope, and the challenge he set himself, is that readers may be emboldened not to shrink from looking deeply into this concluding book of the Bible - reading and seeing, hearing (by doing) it.
You’re Not From Around Here... Are You?
This is my second edition catalog of my artwork from my new sci-fi story, "You're not from around here are you?" My artwork is mixed media; gel pen and watercolor plus other materials. It's ultra colorful, very contemporary and fun. The central characters, the "Cam," are warm, friendly, surprisingly funny and are drawn in some very unusual situations. There are hidden messages from the Torah, Bible, Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad-Gita, Quran and other sources. The drawings are even more fun when you look at them with 3D glasses. There are many sizes to choose from; 18" x 24", 24" x 36", 36" x 48" and more. To have a large format print hanging over your sofa will light up your room. Situational subjects; a Cam marriage, catching a Cam on the toilet (accidentally, of course), Cam sneeze, Tootsie worm menagerie (we have dogs and cats, Cams have Tootsie worms), young terrified Cam boy on a skateboard getting ready to go down a steep hill, and much more. Cams are extremely considerate. In order to fit in, they'll wear human clothing, hair, lipstick, shoes, hats, mustaches, bow ties, etc., in order to blend in and it's hilarious! It's funny because Cams look nothing like us! They communicate with light and light patterns, walk with a suction cup foot, slide 'n' shuffle, and say and do off the wall things. You are going to fall in love with them!! Backstory The time is finally here! Contact has been made. We no longer have to wait for an answer. They are called Cams and they're from our very own interstellar neighborhood. Camelopardia is 265 light years away, and onboard their starship, there are other races eager to meet us. But the question looms, why now? This is a realistic meeting of our interstellar neighbors. Why are they here? What do they look like? Do they have families? Do they believe in G-d? What are their objectives? What's their culture like? So many questions! The Cams are here for 35 years. They're here to warn us and teach us. They will redirect our thinking and help us to become part of a legion, a peaceful group, that must come together to fight a common enemy, the Knuck Knack. So insidious and so very, very dangerous, they give cruelty a whole new meaning, and... they've known about Earth for over 150 years! There are 61 members of the Legion of Planets. The Cams and several other races will bring us into the Legion. Get ready for the ride of your life!! The adventure begins!!
Harmonics: Sixty Years of Life in Art
Paul Gruhler opened his first studio in 1962 at the age of 21 -- a year later he had a solo show at the DeMena Gallery in lower Manhattan. From the beginning, Gruhler, a self-taught artist, was compelled by what came to be known as geometric abstraction, in which the deliberative arrangement of color, line, texture, and scale, in paintings and collage, evoke from these disparate elements a sense of meditative harmony. For sixty years, he has continued to explore the subtle differences that can be made from color and line. Gruhler was fortunate in the early years to have met and become good friends with three older artists who were also important teachers and mentors -- first Michael Lekakis, then Harold Weston and Herb Aach. Lekakis, a celebrated sculptor, who already had had exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition Americans 1963, took Gruhler under his wing, navigating him through New York's thriving avant-garde art scene. As Carolyn Bauer writes, "Michael Lekakis was instrumental in encouraging Gruhler to attend art events, while taking him to invite-only museum openings." He also introduced him to renowned artists -- among them, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Louise Nevelson, and Barnett Newman -- whose works influenced the young Gruhler, as did such artists as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Ad Reinhardt. Lekakis was also instrumental in Gruhler's first show, giving titles to his paintings and writing catalog copy that drew upon his own abstract poetics. "These canvases," he wrote, are "multi colored fire densely cascades to suspension hanging a counterpoint of rhythmic patterns in space covering it like a shroud united by a golden fragmentation." Over these years Gruhler has had numerous solo and group shows in the U.S. in New York and Vermont, in Mexico, and abroad in Finland, Germany, Sweden, and The Netherlands. HARMONICS is both a retrospective and a current view of Paul Gruhler's intensive art. "My work," he says, "has been a meditative exploration of vertical and horizontal relationships in space, in order to achieve both harmony and tension within color, line and form."--Paul Gruhler "Publisher"

Adam Pendleton: As Heavy as Sculpture
An artist's book exploring the language of protestA new artist's book by Adam Pendleton (born 1984), As Heavy as Sculpture follows Pendleton's 2021 installation of the same title, exhibited at the New Museum in New York. The book collects, repeats and processes over 80 source collages, incorporating drawings, sketches, writing and marks, often in combination with images.Much of the language in the collages is drawn from the protests against police brutality that swept the US in 2020: Pendleton has transcribed slogans sprayed on walls and windows, combining them with his own improvised language as well as photographs of art objects and artifacts (sculptures, masks and figures). The work points to the poetic pressure that uprisings place on language itself, compressing it in some cases into the barest of forms: simple sequences like "ACAB" or "1312," further reducible to the elements "A, B, C," "1, 2, 3."In parallel with these operations of decomposition and recomposition, the collages in As Heavy as Sculpture have been duplicated, laid out across 30 sheets and folded into book signatures, creating new displacements and cuts. This folding is in effect a chance operation, a procedure of recombination and translation, resulting in arrangements of images not planned out in advance.
Failure Biographies
Damm's distinctive style of collage transforms 1950s horror comics into true stories of artistic failure. One artist's quixotic quest to clone Martin Luther King, Jr. A pioneering silent film director pushed from the industry by her controlling husband. A writer who tries to write popular fiction but ends up in the avant-garde. Featuring radical Argentinian art collective Tucum獺n Arde, conceptual artists Pope L. and Marta Minuj穩n, filmmakers Alice Guy Blach矇 and Pere Portabella, Mexican superhero Superbarrio G籀mez, and more, Failure Biographies celebrates the struggles of great 20th and 21st century innovators who attempted - and failed - to change the world.
The ”Nonsense” Papers
Over the past two years a pandemic has gripped the planet in fear with lockdowns, restrictions, and a transition into a unknown future with transhumanism at its helm. While the flow of information has been heavily censored and controlled by a new "fact checker" system, humanity seemingly is only getting one side of the story. The SARS-Cov2 has been manipulated by the mass media keeping people locked in their homes afraid to go out. Controversial theories including this virus being imaginary and that the virus was engineered to control the world population are at the helm of the argument. Part one of the third installment of the series questions the state of humanity's future and the fate of our very race with our environmental habits, vaccines and their supposed purpose, what it means to be human and our beliefs. Has humanity reached its zenith? With the 2030 agenda pushed by the United Nations and their praise for what some are calling the "scamdemic/plandemic" as a means of starting over, is humanity to begin what most are calling the Great Reset? Is the next stage in our evolution dominated by RFID implanted chips, vaccine passports with the promise of returning to a "normal life," and a biotechnology? The horizon in humanity's future seems mysterious and hidden.
Aleister Crowley
In 2009 Roy Huteson Stewart set out on an expedition into unknown realms to chronicle the life and times of the so-called "wickedest man in the world". His artwork for what would become the graphic novel Aleister Crowley: Wandering the Waste is now collected in its truest, rawest form. Here are the pencils, inks, and collages depicting all the glorious filth and splendor of a life lived at the extreme limits of human knowledge and sanity. Truly an art book to savor. 'Aleister Crowley: Art of the Waste', a must-have for anyone who loves Aleister Crowley.

Beatrix Potter
This beautiful book explores the beloved writer's achievements as a storyteller, artist, and naturalist. Beatrix Potter's universe of characters--Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddleduck--have delighted audiences for over a century. A creative pioneer and determined entrepreneur, she combined scientific observation with imaginative storytelling to create some of the world's best-loved children's books. This volume showcases Potter's charming charac-ters against the backdrop of her exquisite botanical drawings, humorous illustrated letters to friends, Lake District landscapes, and rarely seen photographs. Beatrix Potter's endearingly hand-painted world of animals and gardens made her one of the most celebrated children's book authors of all time, yet this is but one facet of her creative life. Drawn to the picturesque English countryside after a London childhood, Potter had a passion for nature that influenced her many achievements as a naturalist, artist, storyteller, and later in life as a fervent conservationist and "gentlewoman" farmer. This book sheds light upon the connections between her art, entrepreneurial success, and legacy in preservation.
Robert Crumb. Sketchbook Vol. 6. 1998-2011
"Silly Fool Comics" fills the final page in this final volume, with a devilish creature telling the anguished Crumb, "YOU Will Soon Be DEAD!" He was a mere 67, but in his self-absorbed Crumbish way was obsessing about death, when not making intimate and loving portraits of his wife Aline and all the other women who'd tormented his libido since boyhood. Most impressive in this book are his historic tableau, some single page, others multi-page strips, including Piers the Ploughman of 14th century England, My Secret Life by "Walter," Rough Women of the Dark Ages and The Apache Dance, from a 1930s Parisian postcard. His Rapidographed cross hatching is superb as ever and we are treated to long screeds displaying his undimmed brilliance at analyzing the human condition, in a morbid but nonetheless amusing way. One could say there are no surprises in content, as Crumb has produced a consistent body of work over the last 40, if not 50, years, yet each page is also jarringly different from the one before, due to his personal juxtaposition of images. So much is packed in you can spend an hour and find you're only a quarter of the way through, with Crumb bemoaning his mortality, while continuing to prosper, every few pages. A fine stand-alone volume, and must-have completion for the sketchbook set.
Alma W. Thomas
A sweeping retrospective of Alma W. Thomas's wide-reaching artistic practice that sheds new light on her singular search for beauty Achieving fame in 1972 as the first Black woman to mount a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Alma W. Thomas (1891-1978) is known for her large abstract paintings filled with irregular patterns of bright colors. This insightful reassessment of Thomas's life and work reveals her complex and deliberate artistic existence before, during, and after the years of commercial and critical success, and describes how her innovative palette and loose application of paint grew out of a long study of color theory. Essays trace Thomas's journey from semirural Georgia to international recognition and situate her work within the context of the Washington Color School and creative communities connected to Howard University. Featuring rarely seen theatrical designs, sculpture, family photographs, watercolors, and marionettes, this volume demonstrates how Thomas's pursuit of beauty extended to every facet of her life--from her exuberant abstractions to the conscientious construction of her own persona through community service, teaching, and gardening. Published in association with The Columbus Museum and the Chrysler Museum of Art Exhibition Schedule: Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, VA (July 9-October 3, 2021) The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC (October 30, 2021-January 23, 2022) Frist Art Museum, Nashville (February 25-June 5, 2022) The Columbus Museum, GA (July 1-September 25, 2022)
David Adjaye Adam Pendleton
A dialogue of materials and process, space and language, architecture and artThis new volume, designed in collaboration with American artist Adam Pendleton (born 1984) and Ghanaian British artist and architect David Adjaye (born 1966), explores the blurred boundary between art and architecture. Featuring new silkscreen canvases by Pendleton and marble sculptures by Adjaye, this publication brings the artists and their works into conversation. The two collaborators discuss their respective practices and their process of working together on the creation of the exhibition at Pace, as well as notions of history, language, abstraction and space--whether architectonic or on canvas--and how these themes involve and reveal themselves in their work. Images of finished artworks are interspersed with photographs of their production, giving a behind-the-scenes look at process, from the quarrying, cutting and polishing of marble for Adjaye's works to the meeting of ink and canvas in Pendleton's studio.
