Grayson Perry
Telling a story of class and taste, aspiration and identity, the tapestry series The Vanity of Small Differences by Turner Prize-winning artist Grayson Perry (born 1960) was conceived up and down the length and breadth of the U.K., as Perry traveled for Channel 4 television "on safari amongst the taste tribes of Britain." Octavio Ocampo
Octavio Ocampo is one of Mexico's most prolific artists. Octavio was born on 28 February 1943 in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico. He grew up in a family of designers, and studied art from early childhood. Ruth Rivera, daughter of artist and muralist Diego Rivera, and Maria Luisa Mendoza encouraged him to attend the School of Painting and Sculpture of the National Fine Art Institute.The talents of Octavio Ocampo are not limited to painting and sculpture, but also extended to acting and dancing. At the Art Institute of San Francisco, he studied all these disciplines and pursued both a film and theater career. In 1976, he began to devote himself solely to painting and sculpture. He now works primarily in the metamorphic style - using a technique of superimposing and juxtaposing realistic and figurative details within the images that he creates.Ocampo is known for several works in his sometimes wryly sardonic, sometimes evocative paintings in which detailed images are intricately woven together to create larger images - the optical illusions fading back and stepping forward as you study the pieces, notice the details, and finally recognize the large scale intention. This is what Octavio Ocampo terms his "metamorphic" style.The Visions Fine Art Gallery in Sedona, Arizona represents Octavio Ocampo in the United States. Notes and Sketches
Filled with witty observations and drenched in dry humor this collection of musings paintings menus wine labels ticket stubs and other memorabilia explores over three decades of travel. Culled from twenty-five of author William P. Rayner's personal notebooks these tales follow a young Rayner as he drinks and dines through remote places. Rayner recounts his wily escape from an overbearing bodyguard nicknamed The Bear early morning paint sessions of local ruins by the light of dawn negotiations with Libyan hotel managers over illegally smuggled scotch and cockpit adventures with a young pilot learning how to blind land-all while making notes and sketches in his diaries. In this increasingly digital age this two-volume set in luxurious slipcases-one book of Rayner's adventures in Africa the other in India-is a tactile collector's piece that evokes the fun and nostalgia of adventure.
Animal Spirits
In 2008, the artist Michael Stevenson (born 1964) self-published a slim book called Fables to accompany his project Lender of Last Resort at the Kr繹ller-M羹ller Museum in the Netherlands. It consisted of a series of nine texts in fable form, each of which suggested further allegorical readings on a tableau in the show. All were coauthored by Stevenson and the Berlin-based art critic Jan Verwoert. The Lender of Last Resort project was developed around the idea of the bilateral loan contract, and this new edition of Animal Spirits expands upon this theme, reexamining it in the light of today's ongoing global financial crisis. The stories were written in a loose Exquisite Corpse manner, and were co-illustrated by the artist and his mother, Margaret Stevenson, in a similar fashion. The stories themselves all address arrangements between two parties or what could be called informal bilateral contracts.

Constantin Brancusi
CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI Constantin Brancusi is one of the greatest of all sculptors, and a key sculptor of the modern era, along with Auguste Rodin and Pablo Picasso. Brancusi's influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and land artists. This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Constantin Brancusi's distinctive sculptural forms, the 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. His central quest was for the 'essence of things', which resulted in purifying a form until only the essence was left. It was Constantin Brancusi's project to strip away the detritus that had accumulated around sculpture, Henry Moore said, and to offer the pure, simple shape. What Brancusi did was 'to concentrate on very simple shapes, to keep his sculpture, as it were, one-cylindered, to refine and polish a single shape to a degree almost too precious.' As well as being a sculptor, Constantin Brancusi was also an accomplished photographer. Quite a few artists (not all of them sculptors) have expressed for Brancusi's photographs, and the way he would set up his sculptures in his studio and photograph them at particular times of the day, when the lighting was just right. They are early examples of installation art (and some of the best, too). Andy Goldsworthy said he admired how Brancusi created the right conditions in his studio so that his work 'comes alive at a particular time of the day as the light momentarily touches it'. John Singer Sargent
Nearly 100 watercolors by John Singer Sargent from two major museum collectionsJohn Singer Sargent's approach to watercolor was unconventional. Going beyond turn-of-the-century standards for carefully delineated and composed landscapes filled with transparent washes, his confidently bold, dense strokes and loosely defined forms startled critics and fellow practitioners alike. One reviewer of an exhibition in London proclaimed him "an eagle in a dove-cote"; another called his work "swagger" watercolors. For Sargent, however, the watercolors were not so much about swagger as about a renewed and liberated approach to painting. In watercolor, his vision became more personal and his works more interconnected, as he considered the way one image--often of a friend or favorite place--enhanced another. Sargent held only two major watercolor exhibitions in the United States during his lifetime. The contents of the first, in 1909, were purchased in their entirety by the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The paintings exhibited in the other, in 1912, were scooped up by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. John Singer Sargent Watercolors reunites nearly 100 works from these collections for the first time, arranging them by themes and subjects: sunlight on stone, figures reclining on grass, patterns of light and shadow. Remedios Varo
Between mysticism and modernity: the magical surrealism of Remedios VaroRemedios Varo: The Mexican Years offers a definitive survey of the life and work of a singularly appealing and mysterious Surrealist painter. Born and raised in Spain, Remedios Varo received her earliest training in Madrid before fleeing the Spanish Civil War in 1937 to join Surrealist circles in Paris. The outbreak of World War II forced her to take refuge in Mexico, where she remained until her untimely death in 1963, and where she created her most enduring work. Known as one of the three "brujas" (witches) active in the Mexico City art milieu, Varo shared an interest in esotericism with fellow painter Leonora Carrington and a range of interests in science, philosophy and the literature of German Romanticism with the photographer Kati Horna. For some ten years, from the mid-1950s until her death in 1963, Varo devoted herself to creating an extraordinary dreamlike oeuvre, on the threshold between mysticism and modernity. Her beautifully crafted images of medieval interiors, occult workshops and androgynous figures engaged in alchemical pursuits evoke the eerie allegories of Hieronymus Bosch, esoteric engravings and the charm and lure of fairytales. This catalogue includes a complete illustrated chronology with never before published images and describes Varo's role in the Mexican Surrealist movement and her relations with Luis Bu簽uel, Octavio Paz, Benjamin P矇ret, Alice Rahon, Wolfgang Paalen and many others. Remedios Varo (1908-1963) fled the Spanish Civil War and then World War II to settle in Mexico where she helped establish a Mexican Surrealist movement and painted visions that combined modernism with mysticism. She was married to the leading French Surrealist Benjamin P矇ret.

Sophie Calle
The Address Book, a key and controversial work in Sophie Calle's oeuvre, lies at the epicenter of many layers of reality and fiction. Having found a lost address book on the street in Paris, Calle copied the pages before returning it anonymously to its owner. She then embarked on a search to come to know this stranger by contacting listed individuals--in essence, following him through the map of his acquaintances. Originally published as a serial in the newspaper Lib矇ration over the course of one month, her incisive written accounts with friends, family and colleagues, juxtaposed with photographs, yield vivid subjective impressions of the address book's owner, Pierre D., while also suggesting ever more complicated stories as information is parsed and withheld by the people she encounters. Collaged through a multitude of details--from the banal to the luminous, this fragile and strangely intimate portrait of Pierre D. is a prism through which to see the desire for, and the elusivity of, knowledge. Upon learning of this work and its publication in the newspaper, Pierre D. expressed his anger, and Calle agreed not to republish the work until after his death. Until then, The Address Book had only been described in English--as the work of the character Maria Turner, whom Paul Auster based on Calle in his novel Leviathan; and in Double Game, Calle's monograph which converses with Auster's novel. This is the first trade publication in English of The Address Book (Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles released a suite of lithographs modeled on the original tabloid pages from Lib矇ration in an edition of 24). The book has the physical weight and feel of an actual address book with a new design of text and images which allow the story to unfold and be savored by the reader.
Simon Denny
Through a variety of media, including photographs, sculpture, video and printed ephemera, New Zealand artist Simon Denny (born 1982) invites us to reflect on the evolution of television and video as both technology and cultural construct. Denny's recent works have included investigations into the "architecture" of the TV set itself, the genre conventions of documentary and the myriad processes by which content is translated from one medium to another, be it in television program stills woven into beach towels or video montages derived from outdated trade magazines. This catalogue traces the arc of the artist's career, with special emphasis on projects realized since 2009--including his 2012 exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum--and features essays by curator Jacob Proctor, critic Pablo Larios and conservator Hanna H繹lling; a conversation between Denny and three artistic peers; and illustrations throughout.

Diane Borsato
Collaborating with a varied cast of characters--beekeepers, mycologists, astronomers, physicists, bees, cats, snowballs, tango dancers, passersby, plants, curators, hotel porters--Canadian artist Diane Borsato creates works that propose eccentric models for relating to one another and to the world. For her project Italian Lessons, she attempted to learn Italian by learning salsa, physics, first aid and beekeeping by way of Italian instruction. In Terrestrial/Celestial, Borsato coordinated an unconventional exchange of observational practices--from opposite ends of the scale--between amateur mycologists and amateur astronomers. In a new work, Walking Studio, Borsato proposes a different space for research and reflection with her mobile field study lab, comprised of a study center and fully functional sauna. This overview is published to accompany a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of York University in 2012.
Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne
Revered and collected by design connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike, the work of husband-and-wife team Claude and Fran癟ois-Xavier Lalanne defies categorization. George Barbier
George Barbier (1882-1932) is one of the great French illustrators of the early twentieth century. He is famous for his elegant art deco works that were heavily influenced by orientalism and Parisian couture. Dario Robleto
Survival Does Not Lie in the Heavens looks at Dario Robleto's ingenious adaptations of nineteenth-century folk traditions to explore mortality and memorialization. Robleto's sculptural objects use the model of the folksy mantelpiece keepsake--the elaborately framed photograph, the trophy, commemorative embroidery--and counter their traditionally saccharine, sentimental appeal with brilliant conceptual gestures. Thus, paper pulped from soldier's letters home (from various wars) are repurposed to create a keepsake of silk, goldleaf and seashells; a homeopathic treatment for "Human Longing" includes medicine made from a ground-up recording of Sylvia Plath; and a framed memorial to Marie Louise Meilleur, who died at the aged of 117, includes hair lockets made of stretched audiotape recordings of other supercentarians. Louise Bourgeois

Fabulous Harlequin
For four decades the internationally renowned French artist ORLAN has interrogated every defining aspect of being human--gender, ethnicity, religion, beauty, physiognomy, and even physiology itself--through an endlessly mutating oeuvre that defies categorization. Performance, sculpture, photography, poetry, design--ORLAN not only creates within these media, she disappears into them, willfully dissolving and reconfiguring her identity through her work. ORLAN is most famous for her series of cosmetic-surgery performances in the 1990s in which she reconfigured her face and body as a critique of the standards of beauty imposed on women. In 2008, in a seemingly radical departure, ORLAN chose to disappear from her work entirely, effacing her famously protean features from her creations. In fact, she had chosen an even more dramatic way to dismantle her identity and perform it anew. With her Harlequin Coat project ORLAN borrows the commedia dell'arte trickster hero, the harlequin, as her alter ego, using his patchwork motif as a metaphor for the fragmented, multicolored, multilayered performance of the human signature. It is her most collaborative work to date, involving, at different stages, artists from the worlds of fashion, design, film, and technology.
