The Childless Witch
'Don't have any children, ' the author's mother said, in response to the question: 'what's your greatest wisdom?' posed to her by her own daughter when she was 10. Forty years down the road this book springs out of investigating just what this wisdom is all about. The book thus offers reflections on the state of being childless. The author's own experiences of childlessness blend in with her analysis of childless artists and the part of their work that mirrors particularly the significance of being childless. In this book, either via personal encounters with the author or across the arts, we meet drummer Zohar Fresco, butoh dancer Carlotta Ikeda, opera singer Maria Callas as Medea through Pier Paolo Passolini's lens, and filmmaker Maya Deren. At the heart of the book is a simple investigation: Who poses true questions? The figure of the witch holds an interesting answer.

The Trade Federation or Let's Explore Globalization Through the Star Wars Prequels
THE TRADE FEDERATION, OR, LET'S EXPLORE GLOBALIZATION THROUGH THE STAR WARS PREQUELS. A play by Andy Boyd. A young experimental playwright named Andy Boyd pitches George Lucas his screenplay for a new Star Wars film. The concept: a prequel to the prequels that fleshes out the economic and social implications of the mysterious Trade Federation. Andy's script is a full-on Marxist allegory where The Trade Federation is The International Monetary Fund, the Gungans are the Zapatistas, and the Jedi are an international community reluctant to push for any real structural change - the UN, basically. Lucas thinks the movie sounds really boring and unceremoniously kicks Andy out of his office. Then things really get weird. This publication is from NoPassport Press (Caridad Svich, Founding Editor).
Experimental Music and Free Improvisation
Sol Nte wrote " Experimental Music and Free Improvisation " to be conceived as a follow-up to " Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond " by Michael Nyman and " Experimental Music Since 1970 " by Jennie Gottschalk . Sol Nte visually proposes the idea of music on paper: Lists of names combining classical composers, pop musicians or contemporary artists together with graphic scores, traditional music notations, comments on improvisations, music software lists and musical drawings. Readers unfamiliar with any of the names or concepts can search online and instantly connect the dots for a variety of experimental music ideas. This is experimental music in its purest form, the free association in the musician's head with a nod to the perennial inspiration of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and The Wire magazine as champions of experimentalism across time and genres. An essential read for people interested in: Cornelius Cardew, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sun Ra, David Toop, David Byrne, Nurse with Wound, Michael Nyman, Experimental Music, Derek Bailey, Throbbing Gristle, Free Improvisation, Jennie Gottschalk, Thom Holmes, Electroacoustic Music, Pierre Schaeffer, The Wire Magazine, Eldritch Priest, Joanna DeMers, Steve Reich, The Velvet Underground, Terry Riley, Sonic Youth, La Monte Young, The Sex Pistols and Philip Glass etc. Sol Nte has been making art, music, and words for the "no-audience underground" since the late eighties. With the exception of being included in a handful of exhibitions, dalliances with Fluxus in the nineties, and an extremely modest streaming revenue for his Pharaoh Sol free jazz albums, he is a refreshingly obscure unknown artist.
The Com矇die-Fran癟aise from Moli癡re to ?ric Ruf
In this new book, the first of its kind in English, Simon Trowbridge traces the rich and sometimes turbulent history of France's national theatre company, the Com矇die-Fran癟aise, from its foundation in 1680 to the present day. The Com矇die-Fran癟aise has survived the vanity of kings and emperors. It has survived revolutions and wars. During all of its long history it has remained a true company, a society of actors. There have been good times and inevitable dips, but today this most legendary of theatres is also among Europe's most dynamic and most compelling.High quality production photographs, along with other images, illustrate the text and help to convey the style and quality of the Com矇die's recent work. Also available in hardback.
Discourse Markers and Beyond
This book explores the use of discourse markers - lexical items where drawing a distinction between propositional and non-propositional, syntactically-semantically integrated and discourse-pragmatic uses is especially relevant. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, descriptive and critical (CDA) perspectives, and manual annotation and automatized analyses, the author argues that Discourse Markers (DMs) cannot be effectively studied in isolation, but must instead be contextualised with reference to other discourse-pragmatic devices and their language and genre backgrounds. This book will be of interest to students and academics working in the fields of DM research and critical discourse studies, and will also appeal to scholars working in areas such as genre studies, second language acquisition (SLA), literary analysis, contemporary cinematography, Tolkien scholarship, and Bible studies.
Hong Kong Dark Cinema
This book is a scholarly investigation of the historical development and contemporary transformation of film noir in today's Hong Kong. Focusing on the evolvement of cinematic narratives, aesthetics, and techniques, the author balances a deep reading of the multiple filmic plots with a discussion of the cinematic portrayals of gender, romance, identities and power relations. Nuancing the prototypical cinematic form and tragic sense of classical film noir, the recent Hong Kong cinema turns around the classical generic role of film noir at the turn of the century to convey very different messages--joy, hope or love. This book examines how the mainstream cinema, or pre-and-post-Hong Kong cinema in particular, applies a peculiar strategy that makes rooms for the audience to enjoy a pleasure-giving process of reflexivity and also critique the mainstream ideology. With new analytical approaches and angles, this book breaks new ground in offering transcultural and cross-genre analyses on the cinema and its impact in local and international markets. This book is the first major scholarly investigation of the historical development and contemporary transformation of film noir in today's Hong Kong. Focusing on the evolvement of cinematic narratives, aesthetics, and techniques, the author balances a deep reading of the multiple filmic plots with a refreshing discussion of the cinematic portrayals of gender, romance, identities and power relations. This book also revisits conceptual categories developed by Foucault, Lacan, Derrida and Butler.
A Method of Lighting the Stage 4th Edition
The McCandless Method, Groundbreaking and Timeless Theater Lighting DesignStage lighting is an essential element of the theater experience. Giving visibility where and when it is wanted, proper lighting stimulates the wonder of being there. In brightness and darkness, color and pattern create an atmosphere of inherent drama, allowing new horizons for artistic expression. Stanley McCandless was a Harvard-trained architect whose work and passion led him to become a pioneer in the field of theatrical lighting design. McCandless served amongst the first faculty at the Yale School of Drama, where he taught lighting design for almost 40 years. During his tenure at Yale he designed a system known as the McCandless Method, as outlined in A Method of Lighting the Stage, which is still widely used today. There are four steps to the McCandless Method: - Lighting the Acting Area - Blending and Toning the Acting Areas - Lighting the Background - Creating Special EffectsMcCandless also designed specific house lights for the Center Theater in New York's Radio City, which were later developed into the ellipsoidal reflector spotlight. This lighting fixture has become the staple for theater lighting inventories in America. By enhancing all aspects of theatrical lighting, from the engineering of lighting instruments to designing realized theatrical productions, McCandless truly earned his moniker, "The father of modern lighting design."This printing has remastered schematics showing lighting placement, builds, and parts. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1635617138).

Hoe toon ik onderliggende machtsstructuren en maak ik een personage explicieter de Ander, door middel van taal?
Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Theater Studies, Dance, grade: 15/20, course: Reflectief luik Masterproef, language: Dutch, abstract: Vervolgens analyseert Sietse hoe Aim矇 C矇saire met Une temp礙te en Jibbe Willems met zijn vrije vertaling van Othello het mensbeeld van de Elizabethaanse periode langs de meetlat legt van ons huidig mensbeeld.
Seeing as Practice
This study provides an overview of philosophical questions relating to sight and vision. It discusses the intertwinement of seeing and ways of seeing against the background of an entirely different theoretical framework.Seeing is both a proven means of acquiring information and a personality-specific way of disclosing the apparent, perceptible world, conditioned by individual and cultural variations. In a peculiar way, the eye holds a middle position between inside and outside of the self and its relations towards itself and others. This book provides a way out of false alternatives by offering a third way with reference to concrete cases of aesthetical and ethical experiences. It will be of particular interest to scholars of the phenomenology and philosophy of perception and it will be valuable to students of philosophy, cultural studies and art.

American Theatre in the Twenty-First Century
In the first anthology of this series, Chicago and Baltimore playwrights share short plays written for the stage. Performance-ready new ideas, contained within insightful dialogue and monologues span, the pages of this anthology. Since America earned its title as "the melting pot" by most historians, Future Publishing House combines with playwrights and theatre artistry to create this unequivocally dynamic collection of work. As artists living with the freedom to create meaningful new work, the plays in this first volume inform the beginning of a millennia of performance art. Plays comment on universal themes: Emma Rund's characters in To Fix a Dinosaur deal with conditional forgiveness. The struggle of political power to overcome scientific knowledge comes through in John Joseph Enright's Starry Night. Women's liberation ideas are featured in Easy as Pie by Melania Coffey. Gentrification is discussed in poetic verse in Alexander Scally's Chalked. Jealousy, envy, and the future of humanity are addressed in Dylan Kinnett's Party Planet.A scene from a play by Cameron Sheppard is dramatic and biographicSome pieces in this anthology fall into symbolism, surrealism, and absurdism, such as Barbara Bryan's Leaving the Universe. Other plays are written as melodramas, such as Love, Lust, Lyrics & Stamps by Matt Brown and Andre Thespies. With an introduction by editor Shaun Vain.
Clown Yourself
CLOWN YOURSELF is a useful manual for both clown students and facilitators. Within its pages Caroline shares what she has been exploring with her students since publishing her first book, The Clown In You. The first part is packed with valuable information, exercises and examples, whilst the second offers ideas on how to practice different aspects of the art of clowning in your daily life. Clown Yourself aims to reinforce and broaden your understanding of clown technique, as well as encourage you to think and behave in clown-like ways in your daily life. Part 1 is full of useful and interesting information such as: why it's so important to keep digging into the depths of our stupidity, the clown games that never fail to work, how having problems can enhance the comedy, why telling lies is so vital to creativity, what strategies to apply when things aren't going as planned, etc. All, of course, peppered with exercises, examples and quotes.Part 2 offers four weeks of "clown practices", fun experiments you can make in your everyday life. They are designed for you to maximize your clown creativity during the week so as not to lose momentum between courses or performances. PART 1 Chapter 1 gives you an overall view of the book's content and an explanation of how the daily life clown practices came into being.Chapter 2 contains a whole stack of persuasive reasons why to clown and keep practising regularly.Chapter 3 tackles the thorny issue of identity and explains in depth why maintaining a concrete idea of "who you think you are" will only limit your clown's ability to be generous with who you really are.Chapters 4 to 7 cover specific areas of clown technique . Each chapter contains explanations of the reasons for, and reasoning behind, each element of the technique, plus exercises and examples of how it all works on a practical level.Chapter 8 details the many challenges you face when improvising and offers a series of blueprints to facilitate your ability to make better, bolder and more comic choices. PART 2 Four weeks of Monday to Friday clown practice options to keep you homing in on your clown skills and throwing yourself into the comic fray... day after day. ____FAQ_____IS IT FOR ME? This book is for clown and theatre students, clown teachers, voluntary hospital clowns, professional clowns, comedians, actors, laughter therapists, anyone interested in clowns or clowning and anyone looking to understand in greater depth the techniques, games and practices contemporary clowns are using to, win over their audiences and create laughter. WHY BUY IT? Caroline has worked with clowning from the inside out and the outside in. She writes from the perspective of a life spent investigating her art, both as a professional clown and as an international clown teacher. After writing her first clowning manual, she created many new courses offering students different chunks of information regarding technique. The insights she gleaned from leading these courses and the students who took them proved too compelling not to be documented. This manual took six years to write and it may take you the same amount of time to assimilate all that it contains! Sid Caesar and Your Show of Shows
In the early days of television, "comedy" often meant stale vaudeville routines and stand-up. Then, in 1950, a new comedy-variety show debuted on NBC--Your Show of Shows. Its gifted and mercurial star, Sid Caesar, talented ensemble cast and superb writing staff--including Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Lucille Kallen and Mel Tolkin--would create comedy designed for the new medium and provide a template for successful shows that followed. With rare illustrations and the most complete sketch guide yet compiled, this book highlights Caesar's reputation as a brilliant comic actor and describes the writing and production of the weekly live broadcast that kept 60 million TV viewers home on Saturday nights.
Silent Films/Loud Music
Silent Films/Loud Music discusses contemporary scores for silent film as a rich vehicle for experimentation in the relationship between music, image, and narrative. Johnston offers an overview of the early history of music for silent film paired with his own first-hand view of the craft of creating new original scores for historical silent films: a unique form crossing musical boundaries of classical, jazz, rock, electronic, and folk. As the first book completely devoted to the study of contemporary scores for silent film, it tells the story of the historical and creative evolution of this art form and features an extended discussion and analysis of some of the most creative works of contemporary silent film scoring.Johnston draws upon his own career in both contemporary film music (working with directors Paul Mazursky, Henry Bean, Philip Haas and Doris D繹rrie, among others) and in creating new scores for silent films by Browning, M矇li癡s, Kinugasa, Murnau & Reiniger. Through this book, Johnston presents a discussion of music for silent films that contradicts long-held assumptions about what silent film music is and must be, with thought-provoking implications for both historical and contemporary film music.

Olanda
I've been happy since the morning. Delighted, even. Everything seems so splendidly transient to me. That dust, from which thou art and unto which thou shalt return - it tempts me. And that's why I wander about these roads, these woods, among the nearby houses, from which waft the aromas of fried pork chops, chicken soup, fish, diapers, steamed potatoes for the pigs; I lose my eye-sight, and regain it again. I don't know what life is, Ola, but I'm holding on to it. Thus speaks the narrator of Rafal Wojasiński's novel Olanda. Awarded the prestigious Marek Nowakowski Prize for 2019, Olanda introduces us to a world we glimpse only through the window of our train, as we hurry from one important city to another: a provincial world of dilapidated farmhouses and sagging apartment blocks, overgrown cemeteries and village drunks; a world seemingly abandoned by God - and yet full of the basic human joy of life itself. Our English translation of Olanda, which includes the radio play Old Man Kalina, brings one of Poland's great contemporary writers of fiction to the wider world for the first time. These narratives may not contain the entire world, just like a village at the end of a dirt road running through ponds, that floods after a heavy rain, does not contain all that may be found in Warsaw. But the world they contain is an intriguing one, in which everyone, from aging beauties through gravedigger philosophers, defrocked seminarians and even the occasional politician, is welcome.Translated from the Polish and introduced by Charles S. Kraszewski. This book has been published with the support of the (c)POLAND Translation Program. Publishers Maxim Hodak & Max Mendor.

The Botanic Garden and My Old Kentucky Plays
Kentucky. Known today for its bluegrass, horse racing, and bourbon; it's very name, embedded in Iroquois history, means Land of Tomorrow. The song birds are the sweetest, thoroughbreds fleetest, wrote James Mulligan, "The landscape is the grandest--And politics-the damnedest In Kentucky." It's a hard look that we must face at European settlers, frightened by differences in heritage, religion, and skin, unable to respect the beauty in other races. They did not understand the sexual orientation of God's creation. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," wrote George Santayana. We romanticize the old days maybe because they are behind us and can no longer harm us. And from the good that was there, we build a better tomorrow. Here are five historical dramas of Kentucky: The Botanic Garden Horace Holly arrives in Kentucky with dreams to create his own university which is deemed to be the Harvard of the West. The faculty he chooses includes an eccentric European botanist who believes that every great university must have its own botanical garden. Dreams collide within the struggles between religion, government, and ambition. A play about Constantine S. Rafinesque and Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. Sabbath of the Soul Three weary travelers meet one evening at a railroad station awaiting arrival of the train carrying the one person most influential to them. Remembrances of this one exceptional life help them come to terms with their own mortality and purpose. A play about the life of Emily H. Tubman and Frankfort, Kentucky. Emma of Elmwood An architect, hired to demolish and replace a beloved house, is haunted into rebuilding his own life. A play about Emma P. Watts and Eastern Kentucky University of Richmond, Kentucky. The Dust of Summer A woman imprisoned by her domestic life discovers a runaway soldier seeking refuge from himself, both trapped between courage and duty. A play about Pleasant View Farm and The Battle of Richmond in Madison County, Kentucky. The Two Villages After years of engagement and unable to set a date for a wedding, a struggling painter is confronted by his fianc矇 as they journey to understand the obstacles that have plagued their relationship. Being true to one's art comes with a price. A play about Kentucky's own impressionistic painter Paul Sawyer of Frankfort, Kentucky.
