In Search of Theater
This book was written between 1946 and 1952, and first published in 1953. It is now widely regarded as the standard portrait of the European and American theater in the turbulent and seminal years following World War II; but it is far more than that. It ranges back as far as Ibsen and even Shakespeare, and has contributed very substantially to a number of reputations that would long outlast 1950, such as those of Bertolt Brecht, Charles Chaplin and Martha Graham. For Bentley fans, it is an essential link in a chain that runs from The Playwright as Thinker to The Life of the Drama to The Brecht Memoir and Thinking About the Playwright.
Transformational Acting
Sande Shurin's enlightened acting technique is a determined effort to steer away from intellectual, theory-based instruction to a more creative and viscerally human approach. It moves beyond teaching how to represent a character or various emotions toward living a role with in-the-moment identification and urgency. Asserts Rapp of Rent fame, "Since I started working with Sande, I think it's safe to say my work on character and my ability to transform into character have exploded and expanded beyond anything I previously would have imagined."
Shakespeare’s Plays in Performance
John Russell Brown demonstrates just how much is in Shakespeare's texts; how the language is awakened, colored, emphasized, sensualized and extended in performance. Shakespeare's intended readers were his collaborators, not his commentators. Brown invites all Shakespeare lovers to seek their insights in Shakespeare's natural habitat: the stage.
Scene Change: A Theatre Diary
Illuminates a theatre of tradition and innovations, describing in detail the many, varied theatre classes the author visited.
Theatre and Drama in the Making
Theatre and Drama in the Making introduces readers not only to important primary sources, but to the uses made of them by distinguished theorists, critics, and historians. Unlike other texts, it discusses theatre as a whole, embracing both the art of dramatic writing and the art of performance. Included in this new edition are greatly expanded sections covering "Latin Theatre and Drama" and "The Golden Age of Spain " as well as all the exciting new archaeological information relating to the excavation of the Rose and the Globe. The introduction to each essay has been revised and enlarged so that together they may be read independently as a concise and accurate narrative of theatre history. From Aeschylus to Cald矇ron, from Agatharcus to Serlio, from Thespis to Burbage, from Aristotle to Sidney, here is the story of Western Theatre in all its glorious variety.
How to Stage a Play, Make a Fortune, Win a Tony and Become a Theatrical Icon
Based almost entirely on the author's personal experiences, this concise handbook follows a director's journey from the casting process to opening night, revealing the hidden or unspoken aspects of play and stage production that are rarely, if ever, described in theater manuals and textbooks. Mr. Marowitz discusses topics such as rehearsals, characterization, blocking, tempo-rhythm, dramaturgy, and actor-and-audience psychology, demystifying an art form that is often dealt with only in terms of concepts and ideology rather than the mundane, nitty-gritty nuts-and-bolts requirements of just "getting the show on the road."
Shakescenes
35 scenes from Shakespeare are presented in newly-edited texts, with notes which clarify meanings, topical references, puns, ambiguities, etc. A brief description of characters and situation prefaces each scene, and is followed by a commentary which discusses its major acting challenges and opportunities. Each scene has been chosen for its independent life requiring only the simplest of stage properties and the barest of spaces.
Off Stage
In this incandescent autobiographical collage, lyricist, playwright and performer Betty Comden takes an exuberant and rueful look back on a lifetime of celebrated triumphs and private sorrow. With her lifelong collaborator Adolph Green, she has achieved glorious success on stage in such musical milestones as On the Town, Wonderful Town and Bells Are Ringing and on screen in the unforgettable Singing in the Rain and The Band Wagon. But this very intimate memoir takes us behind her experiences in theatre and film to her childhood in Brooklyn, her determined exodus to Manhattan and Broadway, her courtship and marriage and the lessons she has learned as a wife and mother. Off Stage is, then, not only of special interest to theatre and movie buffs. It is also the poignant and inspirational story of a woman of many talents and interests who tried to have it all - and very nearly succeeded.
Scarlet Pimpernel
First performed in 1903, The Scarlet Pimpernel was the most successful play of its day archetypal Edwardian theatre and the precursor of romantic Hollywood historical epics. This adaptation brings to modern audiences the tale of the elusive hero who snatches helpless innocents from death and rescues the Comte de Tournai with the enemy hot on his trail. The Scarlet Pimpernel works in the shadows, his identity unknown even to his immediate followers. So disinterested is he in claiming credit for his heroism that he affects the persona of the biggest fool in London. He stands for English stability and against chaos and passionate fanaticism.7 women, 16 men

Culture, Democracy and the Right to Make Art
Based on the words and experiences of the people involved, this open access book tells the story of the community arts movement in the UK, and, through a series of essays, assesses its influence on present day participatory arts practices. Part I offers the first comprehensive account of the movement, its history, rationale and modes of working in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales; Part II brings the work up to the present, through a scholarly assessment of its influence on contemporary practice that considers the role of technologies and networks, training, funding, commissioning and curating socially engaged art today. The community arts movement was a well-known but little understood and largely undocumented creative revolution that began as part of the counter-cultural scene in the late 1960s. A wide range of art forms were developed, including large processions with floats and giant puppets, shadow puppet shows, murals and public art, events on adventure playgrounds and play schemes, outdoor events and fireshows. By the middle of the 1980s community arts had changed and diversified to the point where its fragmentation meant that it could no longer be seen as a coherent movement. Interviews with the early pioneers provide a unique insight into the arts practices of the time. Culture, Democracy and the Right to Make Art is not simply a history because the legacy and influence of the community arts movement can be seen in a huge range of diverse locations today. Anyone who has ever encountered a community festival or educational project in a gallery or museum or visited a local arts centre could be said to be part of the on-going story of the community arts. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC-BY-NC-ND 3.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by the University of Manchester.
Dramatic Works
"God hath denied me that angelic measure / Without which no man sees in me the poet," writes Zygmunt Krasiński in one of his most recognisable lyrics. Yet while it may be true that his lyric output cannot rival in quality the verses of the other two great Polish Romantics, Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Slowacki, Krasiński's dramatic muse gives no ground to any other. The Glagoslav edition of the Dramatic Works of Zygmunt Krasiński provides the English reader, for the first time, with all of Krasiński's plays in the translation of Charles S. Kraszewski. These include the sweeping costume drama Irydion, in which the author sets forth the grievances of his occupied nation through the fable of an uprising of Greeks and barbarians against the dissipated emperor Heliogabalus, and, of course, the monumental drama on which his international fame rests: the Undivine Comedy.A cosmic play, which defies simple description, the Undivine Comedy is both a de-masking of the Byronic ideal of the poet, whose nefarious, and selfish devotion to the ideal has evil consequences for real human beings, and a prophetic warning of the fratricidal class warfare that was to roil the first decades of the twentieth century. The Undivine Comedy is intriguing in the way that the author presents both sides of this question -- the republican and that of the ancien r矇gime -- with sympathy and understanding. It is also striking how -- in 1830 -- the author foresaw the problems of the 1930s.As Czeslaw Milosz once put it, Krasiński was insightfully commenting on Marxism while Karl Marx was still in high school. The Dramatic Works of Zygmunt Krasiński also include the unfinished play 1846, which hints at how the author would have handled a work meant for the traditional stage, and the Unfinished Poem -- the Dantean "prequel" to the Undivine Comedy, on which Krasiński was working at his death. This book was published with the support of the Hanna and Zdzislaw Broncel Charitable Trust.

Four Plays
The crypt of Wawel Cathedral in Krak籀w is the Polish nation's greatest pantheon. Here lie the earthly remains of its storied kings and queens, and two of its greatest poets, Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Slowacki. At the conclusion of his speech at Slowacki's reburial in 1927, Marshal J籀zef Pilsudski commanded the guard of honour: "In the name of the Republic, I direct you, gentlemen, to carry this sarcophagus into the royal crypt, for he who rests within was no less a king." Slowacki, who once described himself and Mickiewicz as "two gods, on their own, opposing, suns" has rested alongside his great rival now for over ninety years. Although generally regarded as an eternal second to the national bard Mickiewicz, Slowacki is a great poet in his own right. Had Mickiewicz, who undoubtedly influenced him, never existed, Juliusz Slowacki would still have become an important European poet -- especially as far as drama is concerned. The recognised creator of the modern traditions of Polish playwriting, Slowacki holds a position second to none in the creation of original plays in the style of Shakespeare -- that darling of the European Romantics -- whom many poets of Europe emulated and imitated, while never reaching the facility with the Shakespearean idiom achieved by Slowacki. What is even more striking is the fact that Slowacki achieved this high level of quality at a very early age. The dramas in Glagoslav's edition of Four Plays include some of the poet's greatest dramatic works, all written before age twenty-five: Mary Stuart, Balladyna and Horsztyński weave carefully crafted motifs from King Lear, Macbeth, Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream in astoundingly original works, and Kordian -- Slowacki's riposte to Mickiewicz's Forefathers' Eve, constitutes the final word in the revolutionary period of Polish Romanticism. Translated into English by Charles S. Kraszewski, the Four Plays of Juliusz Slowacki will be of interest to aficionados of Polish Romanticism, Shakespeare, and theatre in general.
Gorilla Theater
On a warm evening a man is crying Howl, howl, howl as he carries in his arms the body of a young woman. This isn't urban violence, it's Gorilla Rep's production of King Lear. There are no sets. The action uses available space: a parking lot, a pedestrian mall, a field. The audience - students, theater lovers, passersby, homeless people - move along with actors, from a tree to a fountain to a bench, and the audience may follow a portion of the performance or all of it. This is one of the most radical, and yet most easily available, concepts in theater: make the world the theater, make the world the audience. Christopher Carter Sanderson is the creator of an alternative theatrical concept: live free performance in public spaces. Featured in the New York Times, the Gorilla Rep productions are praised both for their acting and for the startling ingenuity of the concept. In this new book, Sanderson explains how theater can be made to work in any free space. He provides specific and practical advice for any performer or director, and relates stories from his own Gorilla Rep experience that show what the most unorthodox of theatrical techniques can achieve - without a theater, without a stage, and without a ticket to be sold.
Television and Children
This book addresses the subject of children and television -- how they view it, what they think of specific programs, and how these likes and dislikes affect learning of the content presented. Broad in coverage, it looks at evaluation, comprehension, and impact in the drama, information and entertainment domains. In all cases, demographic and background experiences and knowledge are assessed for their contribution to learning, attitude/opinion change, and stability as a function of exposure to particular program content. Empirical investigations of police dramas, science programs, and quiz shows are conducted utilizing experimental methods and involving approximately 1,000 children in a series of studies. Related to existing research literature, this work confirms the view of the child/adolescent as an active viewer who is critical, constructive, and capable of learning from the television medium -- even when the program is clearly broadcast as entertainment rather than as education or information. This volume is unique in that it addresses questions of the relation between children and diverse television content in terms of its impact on social and informational schemas.
Hopes for Great Happenings (Routledge Revivals)
When Albert Hunt joined the staff of the Regional College of Art, Bradford, in 1965, he found himself working mostly with 'non-academic' students on a fascinating range of games, projects and theatre events outside the main stream of exam-oriented education. In this title, first published in 1976, Albert Hunt describes this experience, and explains how he himself evolved from a conventional grammar school teacher to a radical and experimental educator. In particular, Hunt describes the evolution of new working relationships between teachers and students, which in turn highlight an alternative way of viewing society.

Let's therefore get out of our glasshouses for a change and learn more about life in other professions and recognize that we are all more or less comedians. The comedies here, ten very different real-life situations, do not only take this into account but also invite us to look at life with a smile because those who smile live happier and longer.

The Vanished World of Robert Youngson
The Vanished World of Robert Youngson examines the life of the forgotten producer and writer who got his start making short subject films. His later features revived audience and critical interest in the 1920s silent film comedians, particularly Laurel and Hardy. These compilations celebrate the world he knew as a child with a nostalgic yearning for a bygone era. Nonetheless, there is an inescapable sadness, particularly at the close of each film, as his narrator expresses how "the laugh makers and thrill makers... have vanished, leaving behind no successors but only moving shadows." Besides candid memories from his wife Jeanne, this study incorporates the only known print interview that Bob gave with a young Leonard Maltin just three years before his death in 1974 at the age of 56. Film historian Jim Manago has authored biographies of Shirley Booth, Kay Aldridge, Gale Gordon, Huntz Hall and Leo Gorcey. He hopes to bring to readers the first biography of Jonathan Harris, best known as Dr. Smith on Lost in Space.
The Search
"The Search" is an adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Pardoner's Tale," and conveys many original cautionary themes to a new audience. Straying from Chaucer's work, Charlotte Akyeampong creates new characters, not only to widen the scope of the story, but also to ensure effective interaction of different characters. For that is the essence of any good drama. The play seeks to cement the idea that the effort needed to achieve any noble mission is no less daunting than what it takes to achieve a worthless one. The truth is, every one of us is in search of something, even when we don't have the faintest idea what it is we hope to find.Perhaps the flaw in our humanity becomes painfully amusing when it is so glaringly obvious for everyone observing from a distance, but remains one that we ourselves cannot see.

Obedience, Struggle and Revolt
"Please reject absolutely the crazy . . . suggestion that playwrights don't have intentions . . . They do." In this intimate collection of writings by the author of Stuff Happens and Plenty, David Hare reveals a perspective as meticulously constructed as one of his dramas. In selections ranging from his beginnings as a politically charged upstart in the seventies through to his current position as one of the world's most respected playwrights, Hare skillfully expands upon the prevailing themes of his astounding body of work. With a serious eye on social issues--tempered by a distinct irreverence--Hare dissects the role of entertainment in contemporary society, mapping, in the process, a dynamic new trajectory for post-millennium theater.

Participatory Art
Winner of the 2019 ASCA Book Award Participation is the utopian sweet dream that has turned into a nightmare in contemporary neoliberal societies. Yet can the participatory ideal be discarded or merely replaced with another term, just because it has become disemboweled into a tool of pacification? The gestures of participatory art insists that the concept of participation must be re-imagined and shifted onto other registers. Moving from reflections on institutional critique and impact to concrete analyses of moments of unsolicited, delicate participation and refusal, the book examines a range of artistic practices from India, Sudan, Guatemala and El Salvador, the Lebanon, the Netherlands and Germany. It proposes the concept of the gesture as a way of theorising participatory art, situating it between the visual and the performing arts, as both individual and collective, both internal attitude and social habitude.
Beyond Scenography
Focused on the contemporary Anglophone adoption from the 1960s onwards, Beyond Scenography explores the porous state of contemporary theatre-making to argue a critical distinction between scenography (as a crafting of place orientation) and scenographics (that which orientate acts of worlding, of staging). With sections on installation art and gardening as well as marketing and placemaking, this book is an argument for what scenography does: how assemblages of scenographic traits orientate, situate, and shape staged events. Established stage orthodoxies are revisited - including the symbiosis of stage and scene and the aesthetic ideology of 'the scenic' - to propose how scenographics are formative to all staged events. Consequently, one of the conclusions of this book is that there is no theatre practice without scenography, no stages without scenographics. Beyond Scenography offers a manifesto for a renewed theory of scenographic practice for the student and professional theatrical designer.

Not only has she helped me become a better actor, but she's also helped me truly enjoy this work in ways I never imagined."-Ryan Reynolds"Before I started working with Warner on the technique, I felt like acting was just something that I could some days do, and some days not do. It was only through doing deep emotion with detail on each of the characters I got, that I could act everyday how I wanted to, because I ended up knowing the character inside and out. The thoughts are no longer my own, but the characters', so I don't have to work as hard during the scenes. Now being on set and being the character is fun and never feels pushed. I love the technique and it has helped me immensely."-Sosie Bacon"I met Warner over 10 years ago. She has coached me through comedy, drama, and even life! She has not only given me tools to be better at my job, but tools to be 100% confident through the process."-Emma Roberts"Warner's Technique has become part of my creative process... It's simply the most intuitive way for me to find a character's base human emotion. Warner worked with us on Disney's Frozen for many months and helped us create truthful characters... I've never felt so comfortable animating a character before and I think the sophistication in the performance in the film speaks for itself."-Lino DiSalvo, Head of Animation for Disney's Frozen
