Performance in the digital age has undergone a radical shift in which a once ephemeral art form can now be relived, replayed and repeated. Shakespeare in the Theatre
The original Blackfriars closed its doors in the 1640s, ending over half-a-century of performances by men and boys. In 2001, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, it opened once again. The reconstructed Blackfriars, home to the American Shakespeare Center, represents an old playhouse for the new millennium and therefore symbolically registers the permanent revolution in the performance of Shakespeare. Time and again, the industry refreshes its practices by rediscovering its own history. This book assesses how one American company has capitalised on history and in so doing has forged one of its own to become a major influence in contemporary Shakespearean theatre.

Lars Nor矇n, generally considered Sweden's greatest playwright since August Strindberg, has written over 75 plays. While they are regularly per­formed in Nordic and European countries and have been translated into sev­eral languages, English-language readers were deprived of his major works until 2013, when Chaucer Press Books published Two Plays: And Give Us the Shadows and Autumn and Winter, followed by Three Plays: Demons, Act, and Terminal 3 and then by Blood and War. This volume pre­sents two of Nor矇n's most recent major plays in English that are thematically related, written after the financial collapse of 2008: FRAGMENTE is about what happened to the working class after the collapse, especially how its members--composed of many immigrants hit by layoffs and uncertainty--did their best to live through their often life-threat­ening situation. 3.31.93. is about a middle class neighborhood in a big city whose citizens--fraught with angst, illness and psychological problems after the financial collapse--both depend upon and avoid each other. In both plays horrific, pointless crimes are committed that seemingly reflect the "disconnect" between people and governmental bu­reaucracies attempting desperately, but in vain, to be helpful and caring. What really stands out about these plays, however, is how they capture the charac­ters' humanity and the essence of their everyday lives, for better or worse. Translator Marita Lindholm Gochman was born in Sweden and came to America in 1964, where she has had a rich theatrical career. In 1985 she translated her first Nor矇n play into English, The Last Supper, and has since translated 25 of his plays--making her Nor矇n's foremost English language translator. Since 1987 Ms. Gochman, who lives in Manhattan, NY, has served as a board member of Circle in the Square, The Inter­national Theatre Insti­tute, and The Signature Theatre. After '89
After '89 takes as its subject the dynamic new range of performance practices that have been developed since the demise of communism in the flourishing theatrical landscape of Poland. After 1989, the theatre has retained its historical role as the crucial space for debating and interrogating cultural and political identities. Providing access to scholarship and criticism not readily accessible to an English-speaking readership, this study surveys the rebirth of the theatre as a site of public intervention and social criticism since the establishment of democracy and the proliferation of theatre makers that have flaunted cultural commonplaces and begged new questions of Polish culture. Lease argues that the most significant change in performance practice after 1989 has been from opposition to the state to a more pluralistic practice that engages with marginalised identities purposefully left out of the rhetoric of freedom and independence.

The Nine O'clock Novella
The Nine O'clock Novella is a first sample of Herminio's written work for the theater. It was first presented in Spanish at the Gershwin Auditorium in Brooklyn College (CUNY) in the spring of 1973. Later, it traveled, in an incipient English version, to the Henry Street Settlement's New Federal Theater (NYC); and in the summer of 1979, to Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts' Out-of-Doors Festival. From there, it travelled to various off-off Broadway settings and to Puerto Rico's Teatro Bellas Artes and the Dominican Republic's Teatro Nacional aside from its presentation in other other states.
