This book explores the impact of digital technology on the essay film in the early 21st century, arguing that the cinematic essay has been associated with technological evolution throughout its history. The author considers the output of four towering figures in essay filmmaking: Harun Farocki, Chris Marker, Chantal Akerman and Jean-Luc Godard, and explores the ways in which these directors utilise aesthetic strategies, editing techniques, and modes of spectatorial address that are rooted in the capabilities of digital technologies. While this might be said of many works of art created in the 20th century, in the case of Bacon, this painfulness can surely be understood in a very specific sense. In the course of this essay, I shall focus on one of Bacon's earlier works, his 1953 painting "Study after Vel獺zquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X." I will try to analyze in which way the picture achieves its disturbing effect and in how far this effect lies at the very center of the 'meaning' of Bacon's painting.
Alice Nielsen and the Gayety of Nations
Born in Nashville, raised in Kansas City, Alice Nielsen took the vaudeville road to San Francsico in 1891. At Tivoli Opera she starred in Balfe's "Satanella" and, tutored by Ida Valerga, debuted as Lucia. Hired in 1895 by The Famous Original Bostonians, Alice opened in NYC with "Robin Hood". She became an international star in three new Victor Herbert musicals. July 1901 she crossed over to opera in Napoli, returning to London at Covent Garden, first for a spring season of Mozart then with San Carlo Opera for a fall Italian season. Her "Boheme" with Caruso was hailed as a masterpiece of ensemble performance. After joining Elenora Duse in alternate nights of drama and opera, Alice returned to US in 1905 for a national concert tour. Acclaim grew as she moved from Chicago to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Dallas. New Orleans Opera House agreed to sponsor a full winter season for Alice Nielsen who joined forces with superstar Lillian Nordica to create a new opera company. With Basque tenor Constantino, their North American tour was regarded superior to the Met. At Park Theatre, Boston, Nielsen sang nine operas in seven days. Patrons stepped up to build Boston Opera House as a permanent home. Opening in 1909, Nielsen, Nordica, and Constantino were its founding stars. Alice also joined the Met. Continued her concert career giving art songs in four languages, an aria, and many encores of familiar parlor and Celtic songs acquired from Irish mom (dad was Danish). Loss of Boston Opera House, sunk by managerial corruption during WW1, was termed America's greatest musical tragedy. Alice kept singing. Made seventy recordings; joint concerts at Carnegie Hall with John McCormack; closed Chautauqua tours with "Alice Nielsen Day" in towns across America. Vintage diva Alice Nielsen, regarded as an icon of artistic integrity, gave unforgettable happiness to many many people in the golden age of live performance.
Dancing in the World

Hispanic Roots of the Hollywood Western explores how the Spanish history of the American Southwest influenced a movie genre that became a worldwide phenomenon: the Western. Numerous aspects of the Hispanic heritage of the Old West appear in Westerns, including Spanish-language place names, Spanish architecture, and Hispanic characters. This book explores these elements through the lens of two archetypal Western protagonists: the Cisco Kid and Zorro. These two characters starred in books, radio shows, and movies throughout the twentieth century, eventually becoming a natural part of American popular culture. They sometimes acted as heroes, sometimes as antiheroes, but in both cases, they helped to create a joyful and positive image in the American collective unconscious of what it meant to be Hispanic in the Wild West. Performing Religion on the Secular Stage
This book examines the relations between Western religion, secularism, and modern theater and performance. Sharon Aronson-Lehavi posits that the ongoing cultural power of religious texts, icons, and ideas on the one hand and the artistic freedom enabled by secularism and avant-garde experimentalism on the other, has led theatre artists throughout the twentieth century to create a uniquely modern theatrical hybrid-theater performances that simultaneously re-inscribe and grapple with religion and religious performativity. This book explores stage conjuring during its "golden age," from about 1860 to 1910. This study provides close readings highlighting four paradigmatic illusions of the time that stand in for different kinds of illusions typical of stage magic in the "golden age" and analyses them within their cultural and media-historical context: "Pepper's Ghost," the archetypical mirror illusion; "The Vanishing Lady," staging a teleportation in a time of a dizzying acceleration of transport; "the levitation," simulating weightlessness with the help of an extended steel machinery; and "The Second Sight," a mind-reading illusion using up-to-date communication technologies.
