Port City Signature
Know where you are?No. But I know where the train will be. In this tightly-wound noir thriller written by Nathaniel Brimmer-Beller (In Everglade Studio, Press, Blood Red Apples & Deep Gold Honey), four characters navigate shifting alliances in the middle of the night in a seaside pub. A newcomer has missed her train. She waits for the next one, the last of the night, in a quiet pub near the station. Before long, a charming regular begins to chat. He soon proposes a deal to her, involving a gun, a hefty payout, and fleeing on the approaching train. As the evening ticks by, the regular and the bartender try to sweeten the deal, the port city's sadistic sheriff makes an appearance, and as the train whistle gets closer, the newcomer must decide... This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere at London's Hope Theatre in September 2024, reopening the Hope as the first full-length play of its new era.

Starting Places
In summer 1997, French film critic and historian Bernard Eisenschitz met with Robert Kramer three times to speak in detail about Kramer's life and work, covering thirty years of filmmaking. The exchange between friends starts with his early, activist years and his involvement with the Newsreel Collective, considers essential films like Ice (1969) and Milestones (1975), and traces Kramer's orientation towards Europe and relocation to France in the late 1970s. Going back and forth between Europe, the USA, Portugal, and Vietnam, Kramer was consistently able to work and make films like Doc's Kingdom (1987), Route One/USA (1989), and Starting Place (1993). He passed away in 1999. The conversation was published in French in 2001 as Points de d矇part. More than 20 years later, Starting Places: A Conversation with Robert Kramer makes this illuminating account of a "mid-Atlantic" filmmaker available in its original language for the first time. The book is complemented by three of Kramer's essays from the 1980s and 1990s and an updated bibliography and filmography.

Grindhouse Visions 4
While the most striking European film poster art of the 1950s to 1980s was largely produced by Italy, other countries also contributed significant innovations in this field. As in Italy, many of the most eye-catching and provocative designs were created to promote horror movies, especially those using elements of women in peril to add a dimension of delinquent sexuality.GRINDHOUSE VISIONS 4 features 100 stunning film posters from France and Spain, focusing on horror and related genres. All posters are shown in full color, and at full page-length.
Grindhouse Visions 3
Post-war cinema saw a rapid rise in the production of B-movies - low-budget genre films dealing with such subjects as horror, science fiction, juvenile delinquency and beatniks, bad girls and women in prison, bikers, gangsters, jungle terror, mondo, drug culture, and finally sexploitation, which eventually flourished due to a constant push-back against censorship.GRINDHOUSE VISIONS 3 is a striking collection of 100 classic English-language film posters which were originally designed to promote these various genres of cult movies. All posters are reproduced in full color, and at full page-length or page-width.

Filmmakers Thinking
Filmmakers Thinking begins from a simple premise: that we do not take the ongoing reflections of filmmakers about their medium, their art and their craft, seriously enough. Every day, everywhere, filmmakers are asked to talk mainly about themselves and their own works. Yet their vocation springs from a deep engagement with the history and possibilities of cinema as a whole. Going beyond the usual, oft-cited sources, Filmmakers Thinking delves into a vast archive of writings (public and private), interviews, talks, and anecdotes to discover what filmmakers think about how to create cinema - and what cinema is, or could be.

The Message
The play's plot unfolds with the protagonist, Arun, a First Class First Post Graduate student. Despite his good academic record, he could not get a job at the university. Average students get jobs in society due to political interference. Frustrated with the social system, he joins the Save India Fighter Organization (S.I.F.O.), an extremist group. The senior Freedom Fighter, Sugreeva Nayak's daughter, Surabhi, is Arun's crush. Their love gets approved by their parents. When her innocence is ruined by the associates of the political leaders Anadi Babu and Paramapriya Babu, she joins the S.I.F.O. group. Her illegitimate child, Alok, is brought to the S.I.F.O. Camp. The theme revolves around the character of Arun, who becomes a S.I.F.O. Fighter and is later convinced to join the mainstream of society. The commander's dialogue matters here, "There are multiple entrance points, but no exit point to the extremists' camp. Nobody can return from this organization with life." Arun and his love Surabhi lose their lives while attempting to leave the camp towards the end of the play. When Doctor Satya Sanatan is kidnapped to their camp, his strong personality influences the fighters. He interacts with the S.I.F.O. Fighter Arun.Arun asks Doctor Satya Sanatan, "What do you mean by 'Revolution'?" Satya Sanatan, a well-known writer, and a doctor, responds to Arun as follows: It is the transformation of an individual from the path of degeneration to righteousness, the correction of wrong to right, and the cultural change from horror to loveliness and the eternal. Revolution is not the slogan for an overnight storm. It can't be achieved in a day. It needs mental preparedness and strong perseverance. Above all, it earnestly seeks the public's approval, for this one can't reach the people with a gun. People's opinion is like an infant. We must glue our hearts with them with the softness of love and affection and give up pride to win their hearts. It would help if you served them. One must remember the truth that violence always gives birth to violence, love to love, and light to light. Arun again says, "We fight and will be fighting for the innocent people who are victimized and exploited daily in their lives by the rich and the hegemonic groups in power."Satya again warns Arun, "Have you ever met your S.I.F.O. Chief? Have you ever understood where you get food, ammunition, and explosives? Or have you ever been given any chance to know all this? But why? Why are they so sympathetic to our country? Staying in foreign lands, they achieve their objectives using the people of this country. They never respect your aims." Furthermore, Satya Sanatan adds, "Don't think murdering a commoner is an adventurous work. If you want to prove that you and your organization are more powerful and above the law and the government, you are mistaken. You will be mean if you want to take revenge. You are afraid of the society. You have lost your courage to face the reality of life. Your future has terrified you so much that you are ready to bloodstain your present."What your one lakh S.I.F.O. fighters do daily must be corrected. But at the end of the play, Doctor Satya Sanatan and Alok have been released from the camp. The play has a strong message about how Gandhism wins over Terrorism or Extremism.
Publication as Autobiography
The goal of virtually all my writing has been to bring attention to cinematic (and, early on, literary) accomplishments that have not received the careful attention, or the audiences, they deserve. I'm hoping that this new collection might create awareness of cultural achievements that have remained underserved or are in danger of fading from cultural memory. Collecting essays for Publication as Autobiography, which is organized chronologically, has allowed me to consider how successive decades have transformed my writing and how recent developments are transforming the field of cinema and media studies. The subjects of the essays collected here include the betrayal of a canonical Hemingway short story, Erskine Caldwell's experiments with dialogue; and a range of films by Larry Gottheim, J.J. Murphy, Peter Watkins, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Robert Nelson, Taka Iimura, Shiho Kano, James Benning, Gustav Deutsch, Peter Hutton, and the team of Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi-along with multi-media works by Patrick Clancy and Robert Huot. Also included: the catalogue essay for "Frames of Mind," a breakthrough 1986 Munson show of filmic and photographic works by Central New York artists (Hollis Frampton, Marion Faller, Bill Brand, Alan Berliner, John Knecht...); a survey of North American pilgrimage sites where generations of cine-devotees accessed independent cinema; explorations of books by Fluxus artist Emmett Williams and subversive-cinema curator/writer Amos Vogel, and of the remarkable one-season television series, My So-Called Life-plus an interview with media scholar, Max Tohline, focusing on the recent emergence of the video essay and the "supercut."Scott MacDonald

Waste and Discard in Italy and the Mediterranean
From the violence of growth and the mountains of garbage to migrant lives brutally cast away in the Mediterranean, what constitutes waste? Who defines and arranges its semantics? This collection of thoughtful essays takes us into the unsuspected depths of the question-the discarded returns to interrogate our lives while we continue our savage trashing of the planet. (Iain Chambers, Independent Scholar and Writer, former Professor of Cultural, Postcolonial and Mediterranean Studies at the University of Naples, L'Orientale) From the flea market to the nuclear waste dump, this insightful collection dives into Mediterranean stories of dirt, rot, decay, trash, junk, and toxic waste, finding critical lessons about politics, ethics, and contemporary values in the materialities of reviled, discarded and forgotten items. Across landscapes, genres, languages, and histories, the authors track heartbreaking instances of cultural and environmental erasure as well as powerful stories of political and material resistance. In a contemporary era of mass extinctions and ubiquitous PFOAs and microplastics, this choral meditation on the fateful dynamics of marginal but resistant matter speaks volumes. (Elena Past, Professor of Italian, Wayne State University) Whether hidden or exposed, waste demands to be explored and understood vis-?-vis the wider social, economic, political, cultural, and material systems that shape everyday life. This volume engages with the ambivalence embedded in and materialized by waste, its ambiguous ownership and temporalities. It interrogates popular and normative notions of waste and discard and offers insight into forms of ecology built around waste - in particular, with reference to the Italian and, more broadly, the Mediterranean area. The contributions to the volume analyze questions of submerged/emerging wasted lives, waste management and mismanagement in urban and suburban areas, and landscape conservation and erasure. Chapters also consider literary depictions of trash and filth as markers of class or otherness and filmic narratives of the wasteocene. The aim is to explore the locality of Italy and the Mediterranean within the wider, planetary system of relations that hinges on production and discard, accumulation, and waste.

In the same way that Italian post-war film poster art set new standards of innovation, so the Italian lobby card, or fotobusta, would also become renowned for pushing the boundaries of promotional design. Classic Italian lobby cards from the unfettered cult movie zone combine transgressive image collages, vivid typography and kinetic graphics to convey forbidden thrills and terrors. GRINDHOUSE VISIONS 2 reproduces 140 striking Italian lobby cards created to promote cult movies over three decades, with a particular focus on the horror and giallo/slasher genres. All lobby cards are shown in full color.NEW REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION.

HIV/AIDS and the Stage
Ebook available to libraries exclusively as part of the JSTOR Path to Open initiative.Theater and performance have played vital political and pedagogical roles in the history of HIV/AIDS advocacy and activism in the Global North. From the shoestring dissident work of the 1980s and 1990s to contemporary educational plays challenging extant stigma surrounding HIV, the stage has long provided a space for identificatory community and activism. However, the nature and purpose of HIV/AIDS theatre has changed significantly over the past four decades or so. While the introduction of anti-retroviral therapies in the 1990s altered the trajectory of the pandemic and positively impacted many lives, the simultaneous consolidation of neoliberal hegemony generated a range of new and heightened challenges for theater makers, activists, and advocates hoping to improve the lives of people with HIV. Drawing on cultural materialist and Western Marxist traditions - most notably Gramscian political theory - this book examines the extent to which the stage has been able to offer a space for counterhegemony in the context of the pandemic. In establishing a genealogy of HIV/AIDS theater that incorporates both close dramaturgical analysis and wider materialist considerations, it elucidates how neoliberalism has established an ever-stronger grip on the genre and its messaging. In so doing, it poses wider questions about theater's role as a political strategy in the contemporary context of neoliberal hegemonic crisis.
A History of English Costume
Originally published in 1937 and reprinted as a fourth edition in paperback in 1979, this is a history of dress in England from the Norman Conquest to the mid-20th century. Despite being an excellent resource for the student or designer, this book also provides a wealth of material for the social historian. Indeed, the author argues that costume is important because it is custom, and custom and habit have helped to shape history just as much as political machinations and geographical discoveries.
Badass Women and Hashtagged Zombies

With the introduction of more diversity, the progression of characters within The Walking Dead and its spinoffs continues to disrupt stereotypes. The Black Pack
The Black Pack: Comedy, Race & Resistance is the first book to chronicle the untold history behind the iconic collaborations between a legendary group of comedians--Eddie Murphy, Paul Mooney, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Robert Townsend, and Arsenio Hall--who joined forces as the "Black Pack" in the late 1980s to create a series of socially-charged comedies that revolutionized popular culture and transformed American comedy. Working together as writers, directors, producers, actors, and consultants, the Black Pack created some of the most provocative and enduring Black films and television shows of the twentieth century, including classic productions like In Living Color, Coming to America, Hollywood Shuffle, and The Arsenio Hall Show. The Black Pack collective was armed with a signature comedic style which combined politically-Black satire with edgy social humor that entertained millions, shattered box-office records, and slyly critiqued America's racial condition. Amid escalating social tensions in the 1980s, the Black Pack's comedic output transformed anger into art, wielding the cloak of humor as a rebellious tool to confront unjust business practices in Hollywood and challenge racial narratives embedded in American culture. Their work empowered unapologetically Black voices and expanded creative possibilities for Black artists in the entertainment industry. In The Black Pack, Artel Great delivers the most comprehensive analysis of this groundbreaking comedy collective, uncovering how the group's socially and politically-charged humor defied systemic barriers to achieve unprecedented commercial success and establish a cultural legacy that continues to inspire media creators today and across new generations.

An Uninhabited Forest
Is there any forest where no human beings reside? There may be.Is there any forest where trees can talk, sing, listen to, laugh, cry, and offer fruits sensing one's mind? There may be.Maybe, hearing the human's footsteps, they will be silent, or else they will be quiet by the stroke of an axe.Had they had wings, the trees would have flown miles over miles, but had they had the wings, what would human beings have done? There would not have been any civilization, society, or exploitation. To the continuous exploitation, indecisive harassment, and plundering, the infinite number of documents of man's materialistic greed in the name of civilization, religion, party politics, and dumb witness is the forest. Forest is the cornerstone of human civilization.I have never seen such a tree. It may happen so that the trees may not talk to me. So, imagining such a play through direct experience may not be expected. In contemporary society, and the decline derived from that, the languor of defeat is created in the human mind. Very mysteriously, an opposite idea is made: "Had it been so, what would have happened!" To the artist, conscious of the situational needs, this type of idea and whim is necessary, for there is the hope that, maybe, the literature created out of this will make the people aware of, and the human civilization may sustain from the forthcoming disaster/apocalypse.

Jack and Johnny became friends who endured the highs and lows of the entertainment business for twenty years. It was a friendship made for television.

Sarah Kane's Theatre of Psychic Life
The first book to focus exclusively on playwright Sarah Kane's approach to mind and mental health; it brings together archival material, healthcare contexts and contemporary performances. As such, it offers an important re-evaluation of Kane's oeuvre, revealing the relationship between theatre and mind, which lies at the heart of her theatrical project. Drawing on performance theory, psychoanalysis and neuroscience, this book argues that Kane's innovations generated a 'dramaturgy of psychic life', which re-shape the encounter between stage and audience. It uses previously unseen archival material and contemporary productions to uncover the mechanics of this innovative theatre practice. Through a radically open-ended approach to dramaturgy, Kane's works offer urgent insights into mental suffering that take us beyond traditional discourses of empathy and 'mental health' and into a profound rethinking of theatre as a mode of thought. It makes a case for the relevance of Kane's work to understandings of contemporary diagnostic categories and places it in urgent debates about mental health in the medical humanities.
Metamodernism in Contemporary British Theatre
Postmodern theatre is dead. A new theatre is rising - one that combines the well-worn postmodern aesthetics of irony, detachment, and deconstruction with a paradoxical interest in authenticity, engagement, and re-construction. Whilst recent scholarship has treated these evolving interests as unrelated shifts in performance aesthetics, this volume proposes a new understanding: that these are part of a wider emerging cultural paradigm - metamodernism. Metamodernism in Contemporary British Theatre is the first book to focus on metamodernism and performance, offering a pioneering framework by which to identify and understand metamodern theatre. By drawing critical links between the works of performance theorists such as Anne Bogart and Andy Lavender and the metamodern as defined by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker, this book makes a clear, vital, and urgent case for the use of the term metamodernism within mainstream theatre scholarship. Focussing on small-scale theatre companies across the UK - including Poltergeist, YESYESNONO, Middle Child and The Gramophones, many of whom have not been documented in academia before - this book also provides a unique analysis of the theatre made by British millennials, a generation who have been distinctly affected by specific structures of contemporary precarity coinciding with this wider cultural shift. Through this, Metamodernism in Contemporary British Theatre makes a crucial contribution towards understanding emergent developments in post-millennial theatre practice across Britain and beyond.

Contemporary Dance Festivals in the Former Yugoslav Space
This book expands the understanding of conditions defining the creation and circulation of contemporary dance that differ across Europe. It focuses on festival-making connected with the Balkan regional project 'Nomad Dance Academy' (NDA), and highlights collective approaches to sustain a theorisation of festivals using the concepts of dissensus and imperceptible politics. Drawing from anthropological methods, three festivals PLESkavica, Slovenia; Kondenz, Serbia and LocoMotion, North Macedonia, are explored through social, political and historical currents affecting curatorial practice. This book closely follows how festival-makers navigate the values of international development that during and after the Yugoslav wars looked to art as part of peacekeeping and nation-building processes. This coincided with increasing discourse and practices of contemporary dance that gained momentum in the 1980s alongside European festivalisation. I show how contemporary dance acts as an agent for transformation, but also a carrier of older forms of social organisation, reflecting methods and values of Yugoslav Worker Self-management that are deployed by the groups creating the festivals. This book will be of interest to dance scholars as well as researchers tracing the long-term effects of the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
Theatre as a Weapon
Based on theatrical research of unusual depth and enterprise, Theatre as a Weapon (1986) shows how the workers' theatre of the 1920s and 1930s transformed the social function of theatre. Sustainable Resilience in Women's Film and Video Organizations
This book illustrates a distinctive lineage of critical interventions in moving image culture and in the public sphere through the trajectories of a small number of film and video organizations established between the 1970s and the early 1980s in Western Europe and North America mainly by women and still operative today.
The actor's poetic vocality
The investigation into the actor's poetic vocality stems from the researcher's own experience during his academic training in acting and theatre direction. Starting from the body registers based on the principles of comedy and the study of the role of the director, we seek an interrelationship between comedy and the central focus of the research, the actor's vocality, with the aim of analysing the result of this relationship. To this end, the lived experiences and inscriptions on the body, based on Jorge Larrosa Bond穩a, and Cec穩lia Almeida Salles' concept of an open, living, mutable work in constant movement, embody and problematise the investigation into the physical and vocal actions generated in the creation process and selected during its execution by the actor-director.

The Hollywood Screenwriter
There has never been a better time to be a screenwriter. The recent explosion of cable and streaming services has created a huge demand for movies, limited series, and those long running "bingeable" shows that can hook viewers for years. Before streaming cable networks, the internet, and home entertainment systems radically changed how we consume our entertainment, there was a clear dividing line between writing for feature films and writing for television. That distinction no longer exists. Most major writers, filmmakers and movie stars are now eager to work on projects for the constantly evolving universe of distribution channels. Once you break in and get that first script sold or that first writing assignment, it's an open playing field for anyone who can deliver the kind of material that attracts an audience. The trick is to learn the craft and the strategies for navigating the business and to start writing...and then to persevere.
