Practice as Research in the Arts (and Beyond)
This project addresses the contexts of Practice as Research and how to undertake it. This second iteration updates thinking and practices but sustains a direct and clear approach on how to become a practitioner-researcher. New features include an extension of range "beyond" the arts and a case for intra-disciplinarity in Practice Research as an influence in the formation of the "future university". A comparison is made between Artistic Research and Practice Research recognizing that research through practices with being-doing-knowing is central to both. Acknowledging the current crisis in legitimation, a broad view is taken of how things might be known by an onto-epistemology for the twenty-first century foregrounding the bodymind but sustaining rationality and community by way of Other/other dialogic exchange. Perspectives from around the world in Part II offset the more Eurocentric emphasis in Part I.

Journeys Into Terror
Since ancient times, explorers and adventurers have captured popular imagination with their frightening narratives of travels gone wrong. Usually, these stories heavily feature the exotic or unknown, and can transform any journey into a nightmare. Stories of such horrific happenings have a long and rich history that stretches from folktales to contemporary media narratives. This work presents eighteen essays that explore the ways in which these texts reflect and shape our fear and fascination surrounding travel, posing new questions about the "geographies of evil" and how our notions of "terrible places" and their inhabitants change over time. The volume's five thematic sections offer new insights into how power, privilege, uncanny landscapes, misbegotten quests, hellish commutes and deadly vacations can turn our travels into terror.

The Making of Modern Subjects
In the early 20th century, Korean women began to manifest themselves in the public sphere. Sung Un Gang explores how the women's gaze was reimagined in public discourse as they attended plays and movies, delving into the complex negotiation process surrounding women's public presence. In this first extensive study of Korean female spectators in the colonial era, he analyzes newspapers, magazines, fictions, and images, arguing that public discourse aimed to mold them into a male-driven and top-down modernization project. Through a meticulous examination of historical sources, this study reconceptualizes colonial Korean female spectators as diverse, active agents with their own politics who played a crucial role in shaping colonial publicness.

Fifty Key Theatre Designers
Fifty Key Theatre Designers looks at the history of theatrical scenography by examining the work and contributions of fifty ground-breaking set, costume, lighting, and projection designers since the Renaissance. Developments of scenic design are traced from the introduction of perspective painting to create illusionistic scenery in Renaissance Italy to the use of digital projection in the twenty-first century. The book also discusses important landmarks in the evolution of costume and lighting design, as well as the introduction of film and video technology to stage design. A broad range of work is explored, including opera, dance, Broadway and West End commercial theatre, avant-garde performance, and even Olympic spectacles. Each chapter features one designer, including basic biographical information and a discussion of that artist's style, aesthetics, and contributions. Designers covered include Sebastiano Serlio, Ferdinando Bibiena, Richard Wagner, Adolphe Appia, and Edward Gordon Craig, amongst many other notable individuals. Each chapter also includes references to other significant designers with similar aesthetics or who made similarly important contributions to the development of that aspect of scenography. This book is ideal for undergraduates and graduates of scenography, theatrical design, and theatre history.
Jerzy Grotowski and Ludwik Flaszen
The book contains three accounts of five public speeches and conversations with the public of two outstanding figures of theatre and performance, Jerzy Grotowski and Ludwik Flaszen, from 1993 to 1997. Their speeches concern their output and their current research. The content of Ludwik Flaszen's speech is very closely related to the output of Jerzy Grotowski. The accounts are written on the base of the author's detailed notes. The main subject of these narratives is their author, who quotes the speaking characters in the third person. In this way, all texts acquire a subjective character, akin to an essay, while remaining faithful to the overall message and content of the speeches and conversations cited in them. Juliusz Tyszka also uses this form of narration to describe the interpersonal context of Flaszen's and Grotowski's talks, including the content and tone of the questions asked, the reactions of listeners, etc. There is also room for short, concise characteristics of these two outstanding people and their interlocutors (who are themselves sometimes also notorious). This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of theatre and performance studies and professionals in experimental theatre and performance.
The All Year Round Stocking Filler
Another bumper selection of cartoons by 'Waldorf'. Humour is a subjective thing, of course, and we hope many of these cartoons will amuse you. A few might not. A couple might even offend you (I do hope so!). Most of these cartoons have sold somewhere. Some to top UK magazines like 'Private Eye' and 'The Oldie'. Quite a few were sold to magazines that few people will know of and some of which have expired. The magazines, that is, not the people. Time moves on, so one or two will reflect events of yesteryear or even yesterday. Attitudes have evolved too, so some comments and taglines could even be offensive (fingers crossed!). By all means send me your comments, ideas and suggestions. Contact me at wdfreeman@ymail.com Have fun.

A Moved Soul
In these pages, you will meet a little girl who dreamed of being a sculpted ballerina and a God who wastes nothing. This is my story, from a carpet encounter with the Most High God to walking into the unknown. This is the path I took-an honest account, over three months-to obey an unusual call. This is my trembling voice in a world where transparency and vulnerability are looked upon as weaknesses. As I wrote A Moved Soul, my awareness heightened of how we miss the glory of God while we attempt to talk our way out of the will of God. We shrink to fit in the box the world creates for us. So I wrote this to show you in real-time what an encounter with God looks like, feels like, and how, if we are not intentional, we dismiss unusual promptings from God because we can't explain them to ourselves, much less others. A Moved Soul is you. Someone so moved by encountering God that they take action. My hope is that my story will inspire you to quickly and boldly respond as you hold tight to the One who called you. This book is for anyone in need of courage to move beyond the norm, shed expectations, and embrace the possibilities while clinging to the One who makes all things possible. You Want Me To Do What?Through powerful storytelling and insightful reflection, author Brenda A. Haire challenges readers to ask themselves: What if encountering God is meant to shake us out of our comfort zones? What if responding to God's call requires us to take risks and step into the unknown? In A Moved Soul, Brenda invites you on a journey of bold and daring encounters with God. From the first pages, her passion for God is evident, as she recounts personal experiences of encountering God's presence and being called to respond in radical ways. This diary-style memoir offers a fresh perspective on what it means to live a life of faith and surrender. Whether you are a seasoned believer or just starting out on your journey, this book will inspire and empower you to respond boldly to the God who is calling you to a life of purpose and meaning. So, are you ready to answer the call? Opulence & Ostentation
Since the foundation of the 'modern' circus in the eighteenth century, the circus has been presented in defined spaces. Initially, performances were given in the open air and, over a period of time, these spaces first became enclosed and then later roofed. Temporary wooden structures often became semi-permanent until, in the nineteenth century, many permanent stone-built buildings were erected solely for the purpose of presenting circus. This phenomenon spread from the UK across Europe and beyond, creating a style of circus architecture that has never been repeated. The purpose of this book is to examine what caused these buildings to be constructed and their design and architecture. Examples of key structures will be explored in detail, some of them still surviving today and still being used for circus performances. The book will also look at the developments of contemporary circus architecture and raise questions as to the future of the circus building.

Performing Against Annihilation
This book outlines how the protagonists in The Nibelung's Ring, The Lord of the Rings, and Game of Thrones attempt to construct identities and expand their consciousness manifestations. As the characters in the three works face the ends of their respective worlds, they must find answers to their mortality, and to the threat it implies: the loss of identity and consciousness. Moreover, it details how this process is depicted performatively. In a hands-on and interdisciplinary approach, this book seeks to unveil the underlying philosophical concepts of identity and consciousness in the three works as they are represented audio-visually on stage and screen. Through the use of many practical examples, this book offers both academic scholars and any interested readers a completely new perspective on three enduringly popular and interrelated works.
Performative Opacity in the Work of Isabelle Huppert
Performative Opacity in the Work of Isabelle Huppert argues that the career of this singular French actor--constituting a corpus of well over a hundred films--offers a unique testing ground for current approaches in film studies and affect studies. Attention to Huppert's performances can reframe recent discussions on the social and cultural dimensions of emotion and normativity through a compelling paradox: her roles tend to express grandiose and overwhelming conditions central to debates in the humanities--negativity, dispossession, trauma--but through elusive and at times resistant or diminutive forms of expression: what J. Hoberman once called her "genius to distinguish 47 varieties of blankness." Including diverse contributions from an international line-up of established scholars, this volume examines Huppert's flat affect and other registers with an eye to their significance for cinema and media studies, queer and gender studies, star studies and world cinema.
Bernard Shaw and the Spanish-Speaking World
This book explores, through a multidisciplinary approach, the immense influence exerted by Bernard Shaw on the Spanish-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic. This collection of essays encompasses the reception and dissemination of his ideas; the translation of his works into Spanish; the performance history of his plays in Spain and Latin America; and Shaw's influence on many key figures of literature in Spanish. It begins by delving into Shaw's knowledge of Spanish literature and gauging his acquaintance with the Spanish cultural milieu throughout his tenure as an art, music, and theatre critic. His early exposure to Spanish-speaking culture later made the return trip in the form of profuse critical reception and theatrical success in countries like Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and Uruguay. This allows for a more detailed investigation into the unmistakable mark that Bernard Shaw left in the oeuvre of leading Spanish-speaking authors like Ramiro de Maeztu, Jorge Luis Borges or Nemesio Canales. This volume also assesses the translations of Shaw's works into Spanish--while also providing a detailed publication history of these translations.

Theatre, Performance and Commemoration
How does the act of performance speak to the concept of commemoration? How and why does commemorative theatre operate as a conceptual, historical and political site from which to interrogate ideas of nationalism and nationhood? This volume explores how theatre and performance create a stage for acts of commemoration, considering crises of hate, nationalism and migration, as well as political, racial and religious bigotry. It features case studies drawn from across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The book's four parts each explore commemoration through a different theoretical lens and present a new set of dramaturgies for research and study. While Section 1 offers a critical survey of 20th- and 21st-century discourses, Section 2 uncovers the commemorative practices underpinning contemporary dramaturgy and applies these practices to plays and performance pieces. These include works by Martin Lynch, Frank McGuinness, Sanja Mitrovic, Theater RAST, Les SlovaKs Dance Collective, Estela Golovchenko, Wajdi Mouawad, ?ine Stapleton, CoisC矇im, ANU Productions, Aubrey Sekhabi, and Indian and African dance practices. The final sections investigate how individual and collective memory and performances of commemoration can become tools for propaganda and political agendas.

Forefathers' Eve
Forefathers' Eve [Dziady] is a four-part dramatic work begun circa 1820 and completed in 1832 - with Part I published only after the poet's death, in 1860. The drama's title refers to Dziady, an ancient Slavic and Lithuanian feast commemorating the dead. This is the grand work of Polish literature, and it is one that elevates Mickiewicz to a position among the "great Europeans" such as Dante and Goethe. With its Christian background of the Communion of the Saints, revenant spirits, and the interpenetration of the worlds of time and eternity, Forefathers' Eve speaks to men and women of all times and places. While it is a truly Polish work - Polish actors covet the role of Gustaw/Konrad in the same way that Anglophone actors covet that of Hamlet - it is one of the most universal works of literature written during the nineteenth century. It has been compared to Goethe's Faust - and rightfully so. Forefathers' Eve initiated the great contribution of Poland to world theatre: Monumental Drama, which stretches from him through Stanislaw Wyspiański to Tadeusz Kantor in our own day and age. The present translation of Adam Mickiewicz's Forefathers' Eve is the first complete verse translation of the cycle published in English. It has been put to use in its entirety by the Teatr Polski in Wroclaw, and partially set to music by Arturas Bumsteinas in his contemporary orchestral work Different Trains (2014). Translated by Charles S. Kraszewski. Charles S. Kraszewski (b. 1962) is a poet, translator and literary critic. He has published three volumes of original verse: Beast (Alexandria, 2013), Diet of Nails (Boston, 2013) and Chanameed (Atlanta, 2015). Among his critical works is Irresolute Heresiarch: Catholicism, Gnosticism and Paganism in the Poetry of Czeslaw Milosz (Newcastle-on-Tyne, 2012); many of his verse translations are collected in the volume Rossetti's Armadillo (Newcastle-on-Tyne, 2014). This book was published with the support of the Hanna and Zdzislaw Broncel Charitable Trust. This book has been published with the support of the (c)POLAND Translation Program. ’Guilty Pleasures’
In Guilty Pleasures, Alice Guilluy examines the reception of contemporary Hollywood romantic comedy by European audiences. She offers a new look at the romantic comedy genre through a qualitative study of its consumption by actual audiences. In doing so, she attempts to challenge traditional critiques of the genre as trite "escapism" at best, and dangerous "guilty pleasure" at worst. Despite this cultural anxiety, little work has been done on the genre's real audiences. Guilluy addresses this gap by presenting the results of a major qualitative study of the genre's reception, based on interview research with rom-com viewers in Britain, France and Germany, focusing on Sweet Home Alabama (2002, dir. Andy Tennant). Throughout the interviews, participants attempted to distance themselves from what they described as the "typical" rom-com viewer: the uneducated, gullible, overly emotional (American) woman. Guilluy calls this fantasy figure the "phantom spectatrix". Guilluy complements this with a critical examination of the press reviews of the 20 biggest-grossing rom-coms at the worldwide box-office in order to contextualise the findings of her audience research.
The art and psychology of acting in virtual theatre
The text discusses the question of redefining the art of the actor, in the context of the two virtual projects staged by Mark Reaney and Ron Willis in Kansas, USA, in 1995 and 1996: The Adding Machine and Wings. The subject of technology pushing forward the frontiers of knowledge is addressed, while art, as always, is invited to reflect these new experiences. Virtual theatre implies, therefore, a redefinition of the actors' performance, the role of the technicians, the function of the directors and the relationship with the audience. The study discusses, at the level of the theatre, the existing relationships between the corporal, the psychic and the artificial, the multidisciplinary training of the actor, the question of the diminished actor, the question of a new performer, and the concerns that generally arise during the process of staging where new technologies are used. The work is addressed to specialists in theatre and new technologies, as well as to the theatre and virtual world enthusiast.

Sustainable Theatre
How does the world of theatre and the performing arts intersect with the climate and environmental crisis? This timely book is the first comprehensive account of the sector's response to the defining issue of our time. The book documents a sector in transition and presents theatre professionals, practitioners and organizations with a synthesis of information, knowledge and expertise to guide them to their own endorsement of sustainable thinking and practice. It is illustrated with inspiring case studies and interviews, from London's National Theatre, to Sydney Theatre Company, to the G繹teborg Opera and the American Repertory Theatre. These foreground the work of pioneering institutions and individual practitioners whose artistic ingenuity, creative activism and sense of public mission have given shape, content and purpose to what we can now call 'sustainable theatre'. Spanning almost three decades, the book approaches the topic from multiple angles and through an international perspective, recording how climate and environmental concerns have been expressed in cultural policy, arts leadership and organizational ethics; in the greening of infrastructure and daily operations; in the individual and institutional practice of sustainable theatre-making; in performing arts education; and in touring practices and international collaboration. It investigates, too, how the climate crisis influences theatre as a story-teller - on stage and beyond. Charlotte Cushman
Charlotte Cushman, one of the great actors of 19th century American theatre, was a lesbian who kept her identity hidden by focusing her career on male characters (Romeo, Claude Melnotte, Wolsey), and also on strong and passionate women (Lady Macbeth, Bianca in Fazio, and Queen Katherine in Henry VIII). This biography is an authoritative record of Cushman's life and performances, showing how her complex gender identity illuminates and is illuminated by 19th century theatre critical views. Part One is a biography; Part Two is a performance history listing all of Cushman's known performances, often with a description of her role and critical commentary.
