Fallen Words
Fallen words is the literal English translation of the Japanese term rakugo (落語). Before there was film, television, sitcoms, and standup comedy, there was rakugo-entertainment created specifically for common people. What is rakugo? Noriko Watanabe, an assistant professor at Baruch College, once described rakugo as "a sitcom with one person playing all the parts." Rakugo is the popular 400-year-old art of Japanese storytelling. It consists of a repertoire of more than 500 classical stories that have been passed down from master to disciple over the centuries. In addition to the classical rakugo stories, there is a substantial collection of new and original rakugo stories being written and performed by contemporary rakugoka (storytellers) on a continuing basis. As the author/ editor of three rakugo books introducing English-speaking audiences to Japan's delightful storytelling tradition, I thought it would be fun to compile and release a collection of my own original English rakugo stories. I hope these stories will enlighten and entertain you.
Bubble
I was there you know. when we shut your places down. gender studies. social studies. the strongholds of your politically correct bullshit worldview. we shut them down. and I was there. and the news cameras were there. and the whole world was watching. What happens when a male lecturer calls a female student a slut? A provocative, dynamic and original, Bubble is a new play by award-winning writer Kieran Hurley. Set entirely on Facebook and written in both text and emojis, it explores the disconnect between online persona and true personality, the fractured nature of online debate and how events can snowball in expected ways. Bubble was originally commissioned and developed as a stage play as part of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's MA Classical and Contemporary Text Programme with support from the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland. It was later developed as a digital theatre production by Theatre Uncut and streamed by 195,000 people online and watched in 32 countries.
Introduction to Speechwork for Actors
Traditional speech work has long favored an upper-class white accent as the model of intelligibility. Because of that, generations of actors have felt disconnected from their own identities and acting choices. This much-needed textbook redresses that trend and encourages actors to achieve intelligibility through rigorous language analysis and an exploration of their own accent and articulation practices.Following an acting class model, where you first analyze the script then reveal yourself through it, this work breaks down a process for analyzing language in a way that excites the imagination. Guiding the student through the labyrinth of abstract concepts and terms, readers are delivered into the practicality of exercises and explorations, giving them self-awareness that enables them to make their own speech come alive.Informed throughout by notes from the author's own extensive experience working with directors and acting teachers, this book serves as an ideal speech-training resource for the 21st -century actor, and includes specially commissioned online videos demonstrating key exercises.
The Theatre of Simon Stephens
Simon Stephens is one of Europe's pre-eminent living playwrights. Since the beginning of his career in 1998, Stephens's award-winning plays have been translated into over twenty languages, been produced on four continents, and continue to feature prominently in the repertoires of European theatre. His original works have garnered numerous awards, with his stage adaptation of Mark Haddon's novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time winning seven Olivier Awards and enjoying acclaim on Broadway. In the first book to provide a critical account of Stephens's work, Jacqueline Bolton draws upon the playwright's unpublished personal archives, as well as original interviews with directors and actors, to advance detailed analyses of his original plays and their productions, examine contemporary approaches to playwriting, and deliver insights into broader debates regarding text, performance and authorship. Caridad Svich addresses Stephens's theatrical output between 2014 and 2019, and essays from Mireia Aragay and James Hudson provide additional perspectives on international productions and the playwright's adaptive practices. Andrew Haydon's edited interviews with six of Stephens's key collaborators - Marianne Elliott, Sarah Frankcom, Sean Holmes, Ramin Gray, Katie Mitchell and Carrie Cracknell - further illuminate the work from a director's viewpoint. The Theatre of Simon Stephens situates the playwright's oeuvre within his embrace of aesthetics and working relations encountered in European theatre cultures, focusing in particular upon shifting attitudes towards the function of the playwright, the relationship between playwrights and directors, and the role of the audience in live performance. The Companion serves as a lively and engaging study of one of the most restlessly creative and important dramatists of our generation.
Boyz N the Hood
In 1991, Boyz N the Hood made history as an important film text and the impetus for a critical national conversation about American urban life in African American communities, especially for young urban black males. Boyz N the Hood: Shifting Hollywood Terrain is an interdisciplinary examination of this iconic film. Beyond the two historic Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Director for John Singleton, the first African American male nominee and the youngest nominee ever in the category, Boyz N the Hood's induction into the Library of Congress National Film Registry by the National Film Preservation Board, speaks to the film's iconic and meaningful impact in film history and American culture. This interdisciplinary approach to the film provides an in-depth critical perspective of Boyz N the Hood, as the embodiment of the blues-how Boyz intimates a world beyond the symbolic world Singleton posits, its fictive stance pivots to a constituent truth in the real world. This book is as much about the filmmaker as it is about the film. It explores John Singleton's cinematic voice and helps explicate his propensity for folk elements in his work (the oral tradition and lore). In addition, the text features critical perspectives from the filmmaker himself and other central figures attached to the production, including a first-hand account of the behind the scenes during production by Steve Nicoladies, Boyz's producer, and an intimate conversation with Shelia Morgan Ward, Singleton's Chief Executive/Business Manager and mother. The text is a critical resource guide and includes Singleton's original screenplay and a range of critical articles and initial movie reviews. "This wise and pioneering book is the first serious and substantive treatment of John Singleton's classic film! This film and book speak with great courage and insight into the plight and predicament of young black men. Don't miss this book!!" -Cornel West, Dietrich Bonhoeffer Chair, Union Theological Seminary; Professor Emeritus, Princeton University "At long last comes a book we have all been waiting for: Joi Carr's masterful examination of John Singleton's classic Boyz in the Hood. This book is an accomplished, enlightening piece of work, a great companion to Singleton's film. Highly recommended!" -Donald Bogle, Film Historian/Author; University of Pennsylvania; New York University's Tisch School of the Arts

He reveals his struggle against the ravages of Parkinson's and triumphs repeatedly. This memoir is also a remarkable love letter to music. Loud is the 'Ted Lasso' of the theater business, ever the optimist. An inspiration to all! "'Music has consequences, ' a wise teacher once told a young David Loud; so does a story well-told and a life fully-lived. I lost count of how many times I laughed, cried, and laugh-cried reading this wonderful, wry, intimate, and inspiring book. David wields a pen like he wields a baton, with perfect timing, exquisite phrasing, and enormous heart."- David Hyde Pierce, actor, Frasier, Spamalot, Curtains "Beautifully written, filled with vivid details, braided with love and loss and wit and the perspective of someone with an utterly unique story to tell."-- Lynn Ahrens, lyricist, Ragtime, Once on This Island, Anastasia "Luminous and surprising, an extremely honest memoir of a life lived in the world of Broadway musicals, by one of the theatre's most gifted conductors. I can't think of another book quite like it."-- John Kander, composer, Cabaret, Chicago, New York, New York Unforgettably entertaining and emotionally revealing, Loud is pitch-perfect as he describes his path to the podium, from a stage-struck kid growing up at a school devoted to organic farming and mountain climbing, to the searing formative challenges he faces during adolescence, to the remarkable behind-the-scenes stories of his Broadway trials and triumphs. Skilled at masking his fears, Loud achieves his dream until one fateful opening night, when in the midst of a merry, dressing room celebration, he can no longer deny reality and must suddenly, truly, face the music.
The Glorious Days of Music Hall & Variety Theatre in Kent's Seaside Resports
Music halls and variety theatres were a popular and regular form of entertainment at England's County of Kent seaside resorts ̶ from Sheerness, around the coast to Seasalter, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Margate, Ramsgate, Deal, Dover, Folkestone, Sandgate and then Lydd, during the period from around 1860 to the 1920s and 1930s. Although the main coastal towns such a Folkestone, Ramsgate, Margate and Sheerness were able to attract, and pay, many of the best national and international stars that could fill 1,000 - 1,800 seat halls, many of them often having a history dating back to the 1860s, 1870s and 1880s, the smaller 600-seat Kent seaside venues had their own touring acts that moved from town to town around the coast, often supplemented by well-know local entertainers. Between these two different types of venues, there were literally hundreds of less well-known or very specialized performers and acts (both human and animal) of almost infinite variety ̶ including many that would be frowned on today, or would not even be bookable in theatres in the 21st century ̶ that often toured theatres during the summer season and, for some, the added bonus of winter tours and the annual Christmas pantomimes. This book presents the results of extensive historical research, documenting the history of many of the Kent music hall and variety theatres around the county's coast, how they evolved and eventually adapted to a new world of cinema, dance and big bands, as well as documenting much of the rich variety of human and animal acts that delighted audiences in these big and small venues. It is hoped that readers will be equally fascinated and interested to learn and understand more about these music hall and theatre venues, and the artistes and acts that performed on the county's stages as a living.

Screening Social Justice
In Screening Social Justice, award-winning anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner presents an ethnographic study of Brave New Films, a nonprofit film production company that makes documentaries intended to mobilize progressive grassroots activism. Ortner positions the work of the company within a tradition of activist documentary filmmaking and within the larger field of "alternative media" that is committed to challenging the mainstream media and telling the truth about the world today. The company's films cover a range of social justice issues, with particular focus on the hidden workings of capitalism, racism, and right-wing extremism. Beyond the films themselves, Brave New Films is also famous for its creative distribution strategies. All of the films are available for free on YouTube. Central to the intention of promoting political activism, the films circulate through networks of other activist and social justice organizations and are shown almost entirely in live screenings in which the power of the film is amplified. Ortner takes the reader inside both the production process and the screenings to show how a film can be made and used to mobilize action for a better world.
Theatre and War
Theatre and war have long been bedfellows. This brief study looks beyond theatre that is about war, and instead focuses on the relationship between theatre and war: how they feed into and inform one another, from rehearsal to post-production analysis. The study builds on the premise that theatre and war share a deep kinship that finds its consummate expression in the very phrase 'theatre of war.' This critical look at the entangled history of theatre and war asks pressing questions that remain pertinent to our current moment: how have the tools of theatre been used in the waging of war? How have the tools of waging war been used in the making of performance? What are the 'shared interests' of theatre and war? And how has performance become a militarized paradigm?
Dynamic Acting Through Active Analysis
In the 21st century, actors face radical changes in plays and performance styles, as they move from stage to screen and grapple with new technologies that present their art to ever-expanding audiences. Active Analysis offers the flexibility of mind, body, and spirit now urgently needed in acting. Dynamic Acting through Active Analysis brings to light this timely legacy, born during the worst era of Soviet repression and hidden for decades from public view. Part I unfolds like a mystery novel through letters, memoirs, and transcripts of Konstantin Stanislavsky's last classes. Far from the authoritarian director of his youth, he reveals himself as a generous mentor, who empowers actors with a brand new collaborative approach to rehearsals. His assistant, Maria Knebel, first bears witness to his forward-looking ideas and then builds the bridge to new plays in new styles through her directing and influential teaching. Part II follows a 21st century company of diverse actors as they experience the joy of applying Active Analysis to their own creative and professional work.

Reading Guide to The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris (Unauthorized)
This is an illustrated reading guide to Heather Morris's bestselling novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Although presented as a novel, Lale Sokolov's story contains important eyewitness testimony that has previously not been documented in other histories of Auschwitz. There have been criticisms about the novel's historical accuracy, and Kevin Mahoney does indeed point out the factual errors in the book. Kevin argues that such errors are inevitable in a narrative of this length, derived from an oral testimony that related events that occurred many decades previously. (Lale delayed telling his story for fear of being accused of being a Nazi collaborator during Gita's lifetime.) However, there is no dispute that Lale was a tattooist of Auschwitz, for there is documentary evidence of this. Kevin Mahoney explores the various controversies surrounding the novel, and explains the historical context around Heather Morris's depiction of Lale and Gita's tumultuous bid to survive the horrors of Auschwitz.

Wild & Untamed Thing
It's been nearly 30 years since journalist Phil South recorded this glorious, uninhibited look into the mind of this fascinating and enigmatic character, sprawling all over topics as diverse as French rugby tactics, teasing Nastassja Kinski, racism and gender identity, the music press, horse stunt riding, comic book culture, fine art, pre-destination, ghosts, Brian Eno - and of course, his work in theatre, TV and film. O'Brien is notoriously reclusive, despite his brief period in the limelight as presenter of The Crystal Maze, and so this frank and very personal interview is a true rarity. South presents it as an unedited transcript of their July 1985 conversation, with just a few asides added to explain some of the more obscure references, which makes this as close as you're ever likely to get to seeing inside the mind of this unique personalty. It's a pure joy to read, and definitely recommended for any serious Rocky Horror fan.

Backstage, the story of the creation of the series was even more extraordinary, a tale of regional Atlantic film makers, renegade artists, cult film makers, wild experimentation, Canadian cultural nationalism, German entrepreneurs, new computer generated imagery technologies and backstage chaos intersecting in wildly unpredictable ways, to create truly exotic images and stories. The product of years of research and dozens of interviews, this is a 'must buy' for any fan of the show itself or of science fiction movies television generally, and an eye opening insight into film and television production, especially Canadian and international productions.

Ethics of Alterity
Providing a solid media-philosophical groundwork, the book contributes to the theory of alterity in Performance Philosophy, while stimulating and inspiring future inquiries where studies in media, art, and literature intersect with philosophy. It collects a selective as well as productive diversity of philosophical, literary, and artistic figures of thought, attaining an exacting framework as a result of a clearly elaborated ethics of alterity, innovatively opened up by way of an aisthetics of existence: Touching upon the Aristotelian concept of aisthesis, the material, perceptual and sensory dimensions of everyday bodily existence are highlighted to move beyond what aesthetics in Modern Philosophy just specializes in, namely art and the beautiful. The notion of existence is therefore borrowed from Maurice Merleau-Ponty, who understands it as something concrete and richly interrelated, so as to avoid the dualisms both of psychological processes of consciousness and of physiological mechanisms. It is thus made explicit such that the unity of body and soul is not any arbitrarily arranged connection between "subject" and "object" but, rather, that it is enacted at every instant in the movement of existence. Imaginatively then, the book puts into writing how alterity not only can be treated theoretically but can be also made accessible through writing as well as rendered relatable through reading. That is why it deals with exemplary interpersonal encounters in the lifeworld, in the arts, and in the media, which are initially thematized as intercorporeal experiences, so as to enable an approach for an ethics of alterity by way of, in particular, sites located within a phenomenology of perception oriented towards the lived body.
