Liyuanxi - Chinese ’Pear Garden Theatre’
This book offers a stimulating introduction to the Hokkien music drama known as liyuanxi ('pear garden theatre'), heir and current expression of one of China's oldest unbroken xiqu ('Chinese opera') traditions. It considers the genre's history prior to the 20th century, its signal successes before and after the Cultural Revolution, and its national prominence today. Beginning with an analysis of the form's aesthetics and techniques, it proceeds to an overview of its rich and distinctive narrative repertoire, including several dramas unique to the genre. Josh Stenberg illustrates liyuanxi's distinctive musical and narrative qualities and presents the performance art's place, not only in Chinese drama and theatre history, but also in the culture of the historic port city of Quanzhou and the broader Hokkien region and diaspora. This study focuses on the work of the only professional theatre troupe in the genre, the Fujian Province Liyuanxi Experimental Theatre (FPLET), and examines the practice of director and leading actor Zeng Jingping, whose performances have focused attention on the genre's expression of women's desires and ambitions, and on her colleague, playwright Wang Renjie. It argues that new scripts engage with the issues of contemporary China while respecting the genre's traditions and conventions, and have led to rewritings of traditional repertoire by younger female authors. Stenberg's book skilfully demonstrates how a traditional theatre can adapt and thrive in a contemporary society, providing an indispensable introduction while whetting the appetite for the genre's exhilarating live performances.

Amateur and Proletarian Theatre in Post-Revolutionary Russia
This is the first collection of primary sources that addresses the amateur theatre produced by the workers in the first decade after the Russian Revolution. Newly translated from the Russian, the essays capture both theoretical articulations on the scene - by luminaries such as Alexander Bogdanov, Platon Kerzhentsev, Valerian Pletnev, Alexander Mgebrov and Valentin Smyshliaev - and the more fleeting descriptions and first-hand accounts of the productions staged, accounts and voices which are typically harder to capture. The essays tell a story of unabashed optimism in the creativity of the working classes. They speak of the use of theatre to carve a public and political role in the construction of a new world. The sources, however, also exhibit the flipside of the scene, or the sombre difficulties faced by the amateur actors and the incessant calls to raise standards through professional help. The narrative developed is that of an amateur theatre which began as an autonomous and heterogeneous activity but which by the mid-to-late 1920s was transformed into a regulated practice and a space for cultural programming. The collection makes an important contribution to our understanding of modern theatre: scholarship conventionally tackles the canonical names from the professional world but gives little attention to the more down-to-earth forms of performance taking place in factories, clubs and amateur circles. An introductory essay also highlights the range and significance of the collection and draws links between the essays.

Beckett's Laboratory is a provocative examination of Beckett's experimentalism with the human spectacle and his playful reliance upon the interpretative powers of the actors and audience.
Moments in Indonesian Film History
This book explores Indonesian cinema, focusing on moments of unique creativity by Indonesian film artists who illuminate important but less-widely-known aspects of their multi-dimensional society. It begins by exploring early 1950s 'Indonesian neorealist films' of the Perfini group, which depict the ethos and emerging moral issues of the period of struggle for independence (1945-49). It continues by discussing four audacious political allegories produced in four discrete political eras--including the Sukarno, Suharto and Reformasi periods. It also surveys the main approaches to Islam in both popular cinema and auteur films during the Suharto New Order. One chapter celebrates the popular songs and B-movies of the Betawi comedian, Benyamin S, which dramatize the experience of the poor in 'modernizing' Jakarta. Baroque Aesthetics in Contemporary American Horror
This book traces a trend that has emerged in recent years within the modern panorama of American horror film and television, the concurrent--and often overwhelming--use of multiple stock characters, themes and tropes taken from classics of the genre. American Horror Story, Insidious and The Conjuring are examples of a filmic tendency to address a series of topics and themes so vast that at first glance each taken separately would seem to suffice for individual films or shows. This book explores this trend in its visible connections with American Horror, but also with cultural and artistic movements from outside the US, namely Baroque art and architecture, Asian Horror, and European Horror. It analyzes how these hybrid products are constructed and discusses the socio-political issues that they raise. The repeated and excessive barrage of images, tropes and scenarios from distinct subgenres of iconic horror films come together to make up an aesthetic that is referred to in this book as Baroque Horror. In many ways similar to the reactions provoked by the artistic movement of the same name that flourished in the XVII century, these productions induce shock, awe, fear, and surprise. Eljaiek-Rodr穩guez details how American directors and filmmakers construct these narratives using different and sometimes disparate elements that come together to function as a whole, terrifying the audience through their frenetic accumulation of images, tropes and plot twists. The book also addresses some of the effects that these complex films and series have produced both in the panorama of contemporary horror, as well as in how we understand politics in a divisive world that pushes for ideological homogenizations.

Masculinities and Manhood in Contemporary Irish Drama
This book charts the journey, in terms of both stasis and change, that masculinities and manhood have made in Irish drama, and by extension in the broader culture and society, from the 1960s to the present. Examining a diverse corpus of drama and theatre events, both mainstream and on the fringe, this study critically elaborates a seismic shift in Irish masculinities. This book argues, then, that Irish manhood has shifted from embodying and enacting post-colonial concerns of nationalism and national identity, to performing models of masculinity that are driven and moulded by the political and cultural practices of neoliberal capitalism. Masculinities and Manhood in Contemporary Irish Drama charts this shift through chapters on performing masculinity in plays set in both the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, and through several chapters that focus on Women's and Queer drama. It thus takes its readers on a journey: a journey that begins with an overtly patriarchal, nationalist manhood that often made direct comment on the state of the nation, and ultimately arrives at several arguably regressive forms of globalised masculinity, which are couched in misaligned notions of individualism and free-choice and that frequently perceive themselves as being in crisis.

This book argues that the performance-based work in the featured case studies contributes to the construction of food democracy where the public takes back decision-making in shaping the food system. In this way, it reminds consumers of the Star Trek story's ongoing centrality within popular culture, whether in the form of the original 1960s series, the later additions such as Voyager and Discovery or J. J. Abrams' `reboot' films. Chapters examine how oral and literary traditions have influenced the series structure and its commercial image, how the cosmological role of humanity and the Earth are explored in title sequences across various Star Trek media platforms, and the multi-faceted way in which Internet, video game and event spin-offs create rituals to consolidate the space opera's fan base. In her afterword to this new edition, Baker extends her analysis to the recently released Star Trek: Short Treks (2018-), Star Trek: Picard (2020-), Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020-), and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022-). In doing so, she underscores the continuing significance of myth in this unprecedented era of expansion for the entire Star Trek enterprise.

Noah Adamson is the first Leader of the Labour Party; frequently torn between his socialism and principled support for votes for women on the one hand and the more reactionary views of too many of his colleagues on the other. A middle-aged married man; he is also in love with the young socialist suffragette Freda McLaird. Things look bleak for the cause and the man. Still Noah - inspired by his soulmate - has time for hope and beauty. He looks forward to a time when the movement will be stronger. Sylvia Pankhurst wrote this previously unpublished play when imprisoned for sedition in the infamous HMP Holloway in 1920/21. Deprived of writing materials in solitary confinement, the legendary activist composed this dramatisation of earlier times with her beloved Keir Hardie - Labour's founding leader - with a contraband pencil on prison issue toilet paper. It would be nearly a hundred years before Pankhurst's biographer Rachel Holmes would discover the play via painstaking analysis of the delicate fragments jumbled into brown envelopes in the archives of the British Library. Holmes' arrangement of the incomplete text brings the poignant story to life in this startlingly topical drama that speaks directly to our own times.

A Decade of Theatre for Seniors
A Decade of Theatre for Seniors examines the Theatre For Seniors (TFS) programme started by The Necessary Stage in 2009. This program aimed to make theatre practice avaliable and inclusive to older members of the community. Since 2009, TFS reached an estimated 40 seniors, and can boast of at least 10 formal public performances presented by TNS, alongside commissions to perform at local events such as PassionArts and also at eldercare Homes.. This study asserts that in later life, aspects of aesthetics and innovation are relevant and all the more important, as past roles in life recede. Using a person-centered pedagogical framework for artists working with communities, this report analyses and presents how aesthetics and innovation are demonstrated via engagement with TFS activities, through opportunities for personal, social, cognitive growth and cultural representation. Data was collected by means of interviews with participants and artist-facilitators of the program, together with and studies of past recordings of performances by TFS. Through thick description, the study asserts that proactive engagement with theatre does enable growth towards life fulfilment, responsibility to others, flexible and precise thinking in the later years of life. Proactive engagement in the arts therefore provides the Singaporean senior with a path of growth towards collective maturity and health.
