Sweetback Blues: The Twelve Bar Tale of South Side Slim travels the harrowing streets and plumbs the artistic soul of a modern day soldier for the blues. Far from some pat redemption yarn of "poor boy makes good," the protagonist here is as unsettling as his folk predecessor, John the Conqueror: unruly saint and endearing trickster. Beautifully written in twelve bar structure, complete with introductory riffs and turnarounds, this narrative nonfiction echoes the very music it celebrates. The bluesman typically sings his seven-stanza story in first person; likewise, these seven chapters get personal in the distinctive voice of Los Angeles blues veteran, South Side Slim. Hailed "the formidable guitar modernist" by Living Blues magazine, Slim has recently toured in Italy, Britain, and Germany. Over one hundred hours of recorded interviews were transcribed, verified, and distilled into eighty-eight bars (vignettes) of page-turning drama.

Metatheatrical Dramaturgies of Violence
This book examines a series of contemporary plays where writers put theatre itself on stage. The texts examined variously dramatize how theatre falls short in response to the demands of violence, expose its implication in structures of violence--including racism and gender-based violence--and illustrate how it might effectively resist violence through reconfiguring representation. Case studies, which include Jackie Sibblies Drury's We Are Proud to Present and Fairview, Ella Hickson's The Writer and Tim Crouch's The Author, provide a range of practice-based perspectives on the question of whether theatre is capable of accounting for and expressing the complexities of structural and interpersonal violence as both lived in the body and borne out in society. This book analyzes the cinematic superhero as social practice. The study's critical context brings together psychoanalysis and restorative and reflective nostalgia as a way of understanding the ideological function of superhero fantasy. It explores the origins of cinematic superhero fantasy from antecedents in myth and religion, to twentieth-century comic book, to the cinematic breakthrough with Superman (1978). The authors then focus on Spider-Man as reflective response to Superman's restorative nostalgia, and read MCU's overarching narrative from Iron Man to End Game in terms of the concurrent social, political, and environmental conditions as a world in crisis. Zornado and Reilly take up Wonder Woman and Black Panther as self-conscious attempts to reflect on gender and race in restorative superhero fantasy, and explore Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy as a meditation on the need for authoritarian fascism. The plays of Mar穩a Mart穩nez Sierra were popular in Spain, South America and in translation on Broadway and London's West End in the first half of the 20th century but they were thought to be written by her husband, the celebrated director and playwright Gregorio Mart穩nez Sierra. After his death, the authorship of his work was revealed to be that of Mar穩a, making her one of the most important playwrights of her time.This edited collection features three plays by Mar穩a Mart穩nez Sierra, translated by Helen and Harley Granville-Barker, along with an introduction by Patricia O'Connor, University of Cincinnati, US, which examines Mar穩a's extraordinary life and work, and the battle for her authorship to be recognized in both the Spanish-speaking and anglophone world. This volume focuses on plays centred on strong women; and each is translated by the eminent man of theatre Harley Granville-Barker and his wife, Helen, whose own story holds stark parallels to Maria's in terms of authorship. David Bowie and Film
This book constitutes the first monograph dedicated to an academic analysis of David Bowie's appearances in film. Through close textual analysis together with production and reception histories, Bowie's 'silver screen' career is explored in full. The book covers performance documentaries such as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, star vehicles ranging from the eulogised The Man Who Fell to Earth to the excoriated Just a Gigolo, plus roles from the horror chic of The Hunger and cult fantasy of Labyrinth to the valiant high-brow Baal and vainglorious high-budget Absolute Beginners, ending with Bowie as Bowie in Bandslam and others as 'Bowie' in Velvet Goldmine and Stardust. Alongside showing his willingness to experiment (and at times fail) across a variety of genres, this study investigates Bowie's performative style that, while struggling to accommodate the requirements of cinematic realism, fits more harmoniously with alternative production codes and aesthetics. Re-Situating Public Theatre in Contemporary France
This book examines the dynamics of the relational and spatial politics of contemporary French theatrical production, with a focus on four theatres in the Greater Paris region. It situates these dynamics within the intersection of the histories of the public theatre and theatre decentralization in France, and the dialogues between live performances and the larger frameworks of artistic direction and programming as well as various imaginations of the "public". Understanding these phenomena, as well as the politics that underscore them, is key to understanding not only the present status of the public theatre in France, but also how theatre as a publicly funded institution interacts with the notion of the plurality, rather than the homogeneity, of its publics.
