The play, Table For Seven Plus One, deals with an under-represented population in theatre productions: the elderly living in senior retirement communities, their concerns for their future well-being, both physical and cognitive, as well their relative isolation from the rest of the community at large. These issues are the subjects of conversation over dinner and are treated with humor, insight, and introspection.
SnapShots
Snapshots is a three-actor touching comedy that captures the high and low points of a 30-year marriage. Maggie ages from 27 to 60's and Sy, her husband, ages 32 to 60's. The Man represents various pivotal figures in their lives. Great for competitions, high schools, community theaters. Simple set: 3 cubes and a coat rack. Placed 3rd in the Kernoble One-Act Competition at the University of Arkansas. The events in this play are those that didn't make it into the family picture album but formed pivotal moments in the ongoing relationship. Maggie and Sy discover each other on a park bench near the University at which they have both come to teach. What follows is a whimsical and musical overview of their struggles during courtship, marriage, parenthood, and eventual widowhood, orchestrated by a park employee (or is he?) who assumes various roles: obstetrician, wedding party guest, and mysterious messenger. From the director Josie O'Laughlin at Concordia University in Nebraska: O'Laughlin said she chose to direct "Snapshots" because she believed many people could relate to its portrayal of simplicity. The play illustrates how moments that are seemingly small and insignificant can have a much larger impact, she said. "I also fell in love with the story it conveys to its audience," she said, "showing snapshots of memories found within the confines of two individual's lives. I believe that this one act, in particular, portrays beauty in the simple moments that make our relationships. It's not in the life-changing events, but the subtle words and looks."

The Red Letter at the Music Hall
This book reprints and analyses reviews of music hall acts from the family magazine The Red Letter, which was published by the Scottish based firm D C Thomson from 1899 to 1987. The articles under review range in date from 1902 to 1914, covering theatres all over Britain and acts from around the world. The reviews are uniquely detailed and shed light not only on the early acts of comics who would later go on to achieve wider fame, such as Will Hay and Robb Wilton, but also reveal the acts of long forgotten performers. These so-called 'wines and spirits' acts--acts that would never top the bill but who nevertheless toured the halls, sometimes for years on end, such as female impersonator Albert Letine, comedy magician Chris van Bern and female stand up Anna Dorothy amongst many others--deserve to be remembered every bit as much as the top of the bill acts. The articles are arranged in sections, covering race, gender, character comedy, physical comedy, male comedy and specialty or 'spesh'acts. The reviews reveal not only the contents of the acts but also the audience reactions to those acts and prevailing contemporary Edwardian attitudes. The articles are accompanied by their original illustrations, some of which are unique and, like the articles themselves, unseen for over a century.

Reading for the Stage: Calder籀n and His Contemporaries
Approaches to the playtext applied to the works of Calderon and his contemporaries. The focus of this book falls less on performance and more on how the playtext may be approached from a theatrical viewpoint. In the theatre, the playtext, addressed traditionally to the theatre professional rather than the averagereader, is usually read by the company at an initial stage in the production of a play. The process by which this type of reading "opens" the text differs from a literary reading of the text. The result of such an analysis givesnew insights into the theatrical text and the playwright's coded directions as to how to translate its content from page to stage. The theoretical premises explored here may be applied as much to a reading of the plays of Calder籀n's European near-contemporaries as to Calder籀n and his contemporaries at the birth of the commercial theatre in seventeenth-century Spain: indeed, the book makes frequent reference to Shakespearean playtexts and their bibliography. In 1639 the Madrid notary Juan Garc穩a de Albertos was appointed Escribano de la Comisi籀n de las comedias - official theatre notary. His annual registers of contracts (protocolos) contain more than two thousand items related to actors and theatrical activity from 1634 to 1660. This exceptionally rich collection of documents offers a fascinating overview of theatrical life, in all its diversity, in Madrid and the surrounding area during the age of Calder籀n. Especially plentiful are the contracts for performances at festivities in towns and villages, both by professional companies and by local amateurs assisted by individual actresses and musicians hired in Madrid. This extraordinary degree of theatrical activity in even the smallest communities, almost entirely neglected hitherto, forces us to revise and expand our conventional picture of the Spanish Golden Age theatre. The OA
Created by the team of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, and starring Marling in the role of Prairie Johnston, the Netflix Originals series The OA (2016-19) is a generically ambiguous, and ambitious, vehicle for exploring a variety of themes, chief among them identity, belief and the nature and construction of reality. Prairie claims that she has learned the secret of inter-dimensional travel after a near-death experience and subsequent imprisonment at the hands of a deranged scientist obsessed with that phenomenon - but is she a potentially unreliable narrator, a sincere one or, finally, a metafictional character playing a version of herself in a fictional drama?This Constellation discusses The OA's thematic concerns in the context of the creators' earlier collaborations and in terms of influences on it, such as the work of David Lynch, particularly the TV series Twin Peaks (1990-2017) and the films Mulholland Drive (2001) and Inland Empire (2006), and comparable texts such as the Netflix Originals series Sense8 (2015-18) and Maniac (2018); the writings of Jorge Luis Borges and Philip K Dick. The discussion will be supported by sources from the fields of media and social theory, including the work of Jean Baudrillard, Steven Shaviro, Jodi Dean, Mark Fisher and Shoshana Zuboff. Negative criticisms of The OA will also be addressed, such as accusations of superficiality, which will be considered alongside the themes of deception, manipulation and artificiality identifiable in The OA specifically, and in Marling and Batmanglij's wider oeuvre.
