The Schaub羹hne Berlin Under Thomas Ostermeier
On the 20th anniversary of artistic director Thomas Ostermeier's time at Berlin's Schaub羹hne Theatre, this important study reflects on the contribution the theatre has made to contemporary theatre, not just in Germany, but around the world. Ostermeier has kept extending and refining the important notion of German Regietheater (directors' theatre) with the Schaub羹hne Theatre being its internationally famous birthplace under the previous artistic direction of Peter Stein. Across two volumes, Mike Vanden Heuvel and a strong roster of contributors present the history, processes, and achievements of American theatre companies renowned for their use of collective and/or ensemble-based techniques to generate new work. The Final Curtain: The Art of Dying on Stage
This is a book about dying, or, more accurately, about the representation of dying in the theatre. Its chief concern is how actors undertook to translate words and concepts into forms legible and significant to an audience. It deals with the ways in which playwrights wrote about death and attitudes towards death in their cultures. Nevertheless, the emphasis is on the practice of acting. Before the nineteenth century, when death began to be confined behind closed doors, it was widely available as a spectacle. Death and the suffering that preceded it were in plain sight; no effort was made to hide the diseased and moribund. The absence of medical means of alleviating pain or of hygienic measures meant that the most distressing and abhorrent aspects of dying were out in the open. The contempt for human life shown by the law-courts and the death penalty for the slightest offence occasioned frequent and enthusiastically attended public executions. In addition, the Church and religion generally hoped, through elaborate rites and ceremonies, both before and after death, to invest it with an edifying value that could be extended for the greater good. The sacred and social ceremony makes a transition into an aesthetic and political performance, marking a more modern frame of mind. Neoclassic decorum eschewed such displays; and, after a heyday of spectacular dying on the nineteenth-century stage, critics again began to insist on more moderate displays. This conformed to the growing emphasis on mental processes and psychological complexity. However, it runs counter to the theatre's need for high color, extreme situations and fanciful invention. Denied house-room in literary drama, these desiderata found a welcome haven in the various manifestations of performance art.

A Cold Day in Hell
The Play: A Cold Day in Hell portrays one man's effort at resolving his despair at his dilemma of having a hospitalized, comatose wife, apparently with no hope of recovery, and grown children who seem to him to be self-absorbed and detached from his plight. A tour-de-force single-character play by author Jan Quackenbush, its actor, Michael Liscio was awarded a 1988 Los Angeles Dramalogue Award in a long-running production by the California Cottage Theatre, 1988-1991. Jan Quackenbush has had plays produced in the USA and in Europe. His published plays includeCALCIUM AND OTHER PLAYS, STILL FIRES, OPFER (VICTIMS, published in Austria), IM KREIS DRAUSSSEN (Inside Out, published in Austria), and INSIDE OUT AND OTHER PLAYS, London. He has had several productions at the La MAMA ETC theatre in New York and has had three plays included in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Additionally, he has published poetry and prose, including "Flash," "Stone Eggs," and "Simeon in Memoriam." In addition to writing new plays, Jan is at work on a documentary film chronicling the military touring shows (soldier-actor shows) that toured Vietnam. Jan coordinated and prepared those shows as part of his active duty in Vietnam. He teaches playwriting at Broome Community College in Binghamton, NY, and in the MA Degree in Creative Writing, Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror
Applying Deleuze's schizoanalytic techniques to film theory, Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror demonstrates how an embodied approach to horror film analysis can help us understand how film affects its viewers and distinguish those films which reify static, hegemonic, "molar" beings from those which prompt fluid, nonbinary, "molecular" becomings. It does so by analyzing the politics of reproduction in contemporary films such as Ex Machina; Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; Mad Max: Fury Road; the Twilight saga; and the original Alien quadrilogy and its more recent prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Author Sunny Hawkins argues that films which promote a "monstrous philosophy" of qualitative, affirmative difference as difference-in-itself, and which tend to be more molecular than molar in their expressions, can help us trace a "line of flight" from the gender binary in the real world. Deleuze and the Gynesis of Horror demonstrates how the techniques of horror film - editing, sound and visual effects, lighting and colour, camera movement - work in tandem with a film's content to affect the viewer's body in ways that disrupt the sense of self as a whole, unified subject with a stable, monolithic identity and, in some cases, can serve to breakdown the binary between self/Other, as we come to realize that we are none of us static, categorizable beings but are, as Henri Bergson said, "living things constantly becoming."

British Black and Asian Shakespeareans
Shakespeare is at the heart of the British theatrical tradition, but the contribution of Ira Aldridge and the Shakespearean performers of African, African-Caribbean, south Asian and east Asian heritage who came after him is not widely known. Telling the story for the first time of how Shakespearean theatre in Britain was integrated from the 1960s to the 21st century, this is a timely and important account of that contribution. Drawing extensively on empirical evidence from the British Black and Asian Shakespeare Performance Database and featuring interviews with nearly forty performers and directors, the book chronicles important productions that led to ground-breaking castings of Black and Asian actors in substantial Shakespearean roles including: - Zakes Mokae (Cry Freedom) as one of three black witches in William Gaskill's 1966 production of Macbeth at the Royal Court Theatre. - Norman Beaton as Angelo in Michael Rudman's 1981 production of Measure for Measure at the National Theatre - the first majority Black Shakespearean cast at the theatre. - Josette Simon as Isabella in Measure for Measure at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987. - Adrian Lester in the title role of Nicholas Hytner's 2003 production of Henry V. - Iqbal Khan on his 2012 production of Much Ado About Nothing - the first production with an all south Asian cast at the Royal Shakespeare Company. - Alfred Enoch and Rakie Ayola as Edgar and Goneril in Talawa Theatre Company's 2016 production of King Lear - Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Simon Godwin's 2016 production for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
