Space, Structures and Design in a Post-Pandemic World
Pandemics have long-term effects on how we live and work, and the COVID-19 pandemic was no exception, accelerating us into a digital economy, in which people increasingly work, shop, and learn online, transforming how we use space in-person and remotely. Space, Structures, and Design in a Post-Pandemic World explores the rebalancing of our physical and digital interactions and what it means for the built environment going forward. This book examines the effect of the pandemic on our use of land, interior space, energy, and transportation, as well as on our approach to design, wealth, work, and practice. Author Thomas Fisher also discusses the plagues of institutional racism and climate change that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and how these were interrelated. At the same time as all of this, the automation of all or part of many jobs continued unabated, eliminating much of the work that people did before COVID-19 arrived. This text discusses how we might leverage the under-utilized human talent and material assets all around us to rebuild our communities and our economy in more creative ways for a more equitable, resilient future. Space, Structures, and Design in a Post-Pandemic World will influence anyone interested in how design thinking can transform how we see the world and those looking for new ways to understand what the COVID-19 pandemic means and what opportunities it creates for our environments.

Notes on Hospitality
Hospitality and Tourism, like many industrial activities, with their integrated offer of a multidimensional program, are framed as disruptive industries. As an organized activity, such an industry exploits a "starting capital" - natural, historical, cultural - available in a territory, and it is disruptive in its double negative / positive polarized meaning of "causing problems and thus preventing something from continuing as usual" versus "changing the traditional way an industry operates, especially in a new and effective way". Intuitively, the physical consequences of implementing its spatial demands are immediately visible wherever such transient or permanent activities occur. Which typologies host which programs and in which locations are some of the underlying questions. This book outlines an evolutive timeline of contexts, programs, typologies, and some new perspectives of the many directions of design research dedicated to the broad concept of Holidays, schematically organized in five different stages: > The Silk Roads. Caravanserai. Traffic and trade routes. > European elites. Grand Hotel and spa tourism. The holidays come into play. > Recreation as a Political Manifesto. Tourism in planned economies. > After the Second World War. Mass tourism. Holidays as a commodity. > Contemporary trends.

The Greater Key Of Solomon
Solomon wrote the book for his son Rehoboam, and commanded him to hide the book in his sepulchre upon his death. After many years the book was discovered by a group of Babylonian philosophers repairing Solomon's tomb. None could interpret the text, until one of them, Ioh矇 Grevis, suggested that they should ask the Lord for understanding. The Angel of the Lord appeared to him and extracted a promise that he would keep the text hidden from the unworthy and the wicked, after which he was able to read it plainly. Ioh矇 Grevis then placed a spell on the book that the unworthy, the unwise or those who did not fear God would not attain the desired effect from any of the workings contained in the book.
At Home on the Water
Coastal havens designed for laid-back living. The idea of a retreat--a place removed from one's daily stressors, a secluded haven to be enjoyed by family--is more appealing than it has been in decades. But second homes are far from a novel concept. Families have built retreats since the late 1800s, when the well-to-do began to construct reprieves in coastal areas to escape the combustive atmosphere of city life. Homes on the water have been coveted and cherished for their particular restorative qualities. In an oceanside house, one can't help but pause to contemplate the view. At Home on the Water offers a history of coastal living and features twelve homes on the water on both coasts and the gulf. This stunning title focuses on both the design of the homes and the way the homeowners live in them, embellished by interviews with homeowners, designers, and/or architects.

Protective Material Coatings For Preserving Cultural Heritage Monuments and Artwork
Long-standing artworks and monuments show the wisdom and cultural identity of an ancient society along with the educational, material and spiritual merits of the people of that time. However, many historical artifacts and cultural monuments have been eroded over time and are in danger of deterioration beyond repair. There is a need to protect and conserve these artifacts. Restoration and preservation requires a multidisciplinary understanding of the inherent properties of these works based on the type of material and sufficient information in the properties of protective and conservation materials and research methods. Protective Material Coatings For Preserving Cultural Heritage Monuments and Artwork aims to familiarize students with the recent practices in conservation and restoration science in recent years by presenting a modern orientation on the subject focused on material coatings. Readers will be able to understand the properties of different materials in antique objects and how to adopt appropriate treatment methods based on these properties. This book consists of 5 chapters. In the first chapter, materials analysis techniques are described for historical monuments along with coatings used to preserve them. The second chapter introduces the properties of metals, alloys, and their common corrosion and explains protection strategies for metal monuments. An emphasis is given to nanocomposite coatings to prevent decay, especially through electrochemical corrosion. Chapter 3 is devoted to studying natural leather and parchments and their conservation from damage by environmental factors such as UV radiation, temperature, and humidity. The fourth chapter deals with stone works, which are in many historical objects. The Power of Past Greatness
The redevelopment of historical centres became an important policy field in the era of European dictatorships following the First World War. At that time historical centres were regarded as shabby and as tarnishing the desired image of a magnificent new city, of a showcase of the dictatorship. This led to the widespread demolition of older buildings. Historical streets and squares disappeared and were replaced by new apartments and workplaces for the loyal middle classes, by car-friendly roads and ostentatious new buildings. Nevertheless, the redevelopment of historical centres did not exclusively mean the eradication of the 'old town'. The aim of the dictatorship in many cases was also the preservation, and often the cultic display, of historical testimonials to past greatness. The book presents examples of the redevelopment of historical centres in Mussolini's Italy, in Stalin's Soviet Union, in Hitler's Germany, in Salazar's Portugal and in Franco's Spain.

Scales, Thresholds and Dilemmas of Housing Transformations in Istanbul
In Istanbul, urban transformation and housing production processes are so intricatelyentwined and intertwined that they elicit a plethora of predictable and unexpectedsubject matters to be studied holistically. This book provides an insight into the scales, thresholds, and dilemmas of housing transformations in Istanbul from past to present, with a focus on cause-and-effect relationships. It scrutinizes Istanbul from newperspectives as the primary scene, target, and playground for neoliberal market actsand actors, on the one hand, and seeks to shed light on future prospects with regard tohousing needs and expectations of twenty-first century users in line with the uniquedynamics of Istanbul, a city without ends, on the other hand.
Planning Singapore
Two hundred years ago, Sir Stamford Raffles established the modern settlement of Singapore with the intent of seeing it become 'a great commercial emporium and fulcrum'. But by the time independence was achieved in 1965, the city faced daunting problems of housing shortage, slums and high unemployment. Since then, Singapore has become one of the richest countries on earth, providing, in Sir Peter Hall's words, 'perhaps the most extraordinary case of economic development in the history of the world'. The story of Singapore's remarkable achievements in the first half century after its independence is now widely known. In Planning Singapore: The Experimental City, Stephen Hamnett and Belinda Yuen have brought together a set of chapters on Singapore's planning achievements, aspirations and challenges, which are united in their focus on what might happen next in the planning of the island-state. Chapters range over Singapore's planning system, innovation and future economy, housing, biodiversity, water and waste, climate change, transport, and the potential transferability of Singapore's planning knowledge. A key question is whether the planning approaches, which have served Singapore so well until now, will suffice to meet the emerging challenges of a changing global economy, demographic shifts, new technologies and the existential threat of climate change. Singapore as a global city is becoming more unequal and more diverse. This has the potential to weaken the social compact which has largely existed since independence and to undermine the social resilience undoubtedly needed to cope with the shocks and disruptions of the twenty-first century. The book concludes, however, that Singapore is better-placed than most to respond to the challenges which it will certainly face thanks to its outstanding systems of planning and implementation, a proven capacity to experiment and a highly developed ability to adapt quickly, purposefully and pragmatically to changing circumstances.
Cervantes' Architectures
Cervantes' Architectures is the first book dedicated to architecture in Cervantes' prose fiction. At a time when a pandemic is sweeping the world, this book reflects on the danger outside by concentrating on the role of enclosed structures as places where humans may feel safe, or as sites of beauty and harmony that provide solace. At the same time, a number of the architectures in Cervantes trigger dread and claustrophobia as they display a kind of shapelessness and a haunting aura that blends with the narrative. This volume invites readers to discover hundreds of edifices that Cervantes built with the pen. Their variety is astounding. The narrators and characters in these novels tell of castles, fortifications, inns, mills, prisons, palaces, towers, and villas which appear in their routes or in their conversations, and which welcome them, amaze them, or entrap them. Cervantes may describe actual buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, or he may imagine structures that metamorphose before our eyes, as we come to view one architecture within another, and within another, creating an abyss of space. They deeply affect the characters as they feel enclosed, liberated, or suspended or as they look upon such structures with dread, relief, or admiration. Cervantes' Architectures sheds light on how places and spaces are perceived through words and how impossible structures find support, paradoxically, in the literary architecture of the work.
Out of Architecture
Out of Architecture is both a call to reassess the architecture profession and its education, and a toolkit for graduates and working architects to untangle their skills, passions and value from traditional architectural practice and consider alternate pathways.
Doctor Watson Architects Incomplete Works Volume Four
This volume of Incomplete Works is a compilation of twenty four items, each of which draws together: 1. an extract 2. a Cosmological Leap. The extracts are reflections on the nature of colour, they are selected from Doctor Watson Architects' library of texts about art, architecture, philosophy and science. The Cosmological Leaps are reproductions of digital image files, they were produced by Doctor Watson Architects as part of their on-going project that is generically known as Air Grid.
Instruments of Culture
Ornament is essential to architecture. The linear categories brought to architecture through the enlightenment have since undermined ornament's spectrum of abstract and visceral qualities. Through a non-western reading of water and ornament, the representations of the Alhambra's past reclaim their essential roles in forming the culture of Granada and the role of ornament in architecture. For students and academics in architecture, design and media studies, architectural and art history, and related fields, this book explores how the stories of sites like the Alhambra can enable the renewal of ornament through historic and contemporary tools in architectural representation.
Designing for Noise & Natural Ventilation
Acoustics can seem challenging to understand for non-acousticians, and this book seeks to illustrate practical ways to design for noisy contexts in a simple and accessible way. The book firstly takes the reader through some basic concepts in acoustics and then gives practical examples of designing for noisy environments.Natural ventilation and noise problems are often dismissed as a luxury, a nice-to-have, but unnecessary, or overlooked because of the primacy of the visual sense in design. In this time of a Covid-19 pandemic, the need for a plentiful supply of fresh, clean, natural air to indoor spaces is even more critical, and air-conditioning circulating the same stale air is something to be avoided. Energy hungry air-conditioning is also unsustainable, expensive to run, and passes the cost of a poor design onto the resident. The book is written to be easy to understand and accessible to design and planning professionals who may not be acousticians nor understand acoustics, and further explanatory videos are available. The book's content crosses the boundaries of several professional fields and draws on acoustics, architecture, urban design, urban planning, public health, and a little bit of math & science. The cross-disciplinary approach aims to provide holistic information and help a rounded understanding of the practicalities of designing for noisy environments while providing natural ventilation.
Sustainability and Privilege
Social design--the practice of designing for poverty relief--is one of the most popular fields in contemporary architecture. Its advocates, focusing on the architect's creativity and good intentions, are overwhelmingly laudatory, while its detractors, concerned with the experience of its beneficiaries, have dismissed it as an expression of cultural imperialism. Placed midway between innocuous celebration and radical critique, Sustainability and Privilege highlights the lessons that can be learned from social design's current limitations and proposes a feasible way to improve this practice. In this broad-ranging account, enlivened by fieldwork and case studies, Gabriel Arboleda contends that social design's invocation of sustainability often serves to marginalize and displace vulnerable populations through projects that involve experimentation of faulty alternative technologies, or that result in so-called green gentrification, or that impose untoward economic and other burdens. Arboleda is fiercely critical of the way social design has been carried out in impoverished regions of the world, most notably in Africa and Latin America. In addressing the challenges posed by issues of privilege in social design's use of sustainability, the book proposes a new interdisciplinary approach called ethnoarchitecture, arguing for a simpler, open-ended, and stakeholder-driven process that eliminates the casual imposition of the architect's ideas on vulnerable populations, foregrounding the people's voices, experience, and input in social design practice.

Emotive Architecture
Design is challenging, but harder still is learning methods to approach the act of design. Written in his final year of a Master of Architecture, Emotive Architecture: A Design Methodology is the cumulation of Keenan Ngo's architectural education and a previous career in structural engineering. It offers a design process analogous to a mathematical vector and is influenced by Japanese architects and designers. The process aims to create architecture that evokes emotions in a multisensory spatial experience for a sense of place and a sense of being.
Urbanismo
Gabriel Alomar Esteve (1910-1997) was an architect, town planner and historian. His early ideas in town planning were largely pragmatic, seeking to address problems of the quality of life and the future traffic circulation in the historic core of his native city, Palma, and its suburbs. He inherited plans for reform from previous generations of Mallorcan planners including Eusebio Estada (1843-1917), Bernat Calvet (1864-1941) and Guillem Forteza (1892-1943) who in turn were influenced by Idelfonso Cerd獺 (1815-1876) the Barcelona planner and his concept of the eixample or ensanche. Some of his plan for Palma was financed by the enigmatic Juan March but under the post-Civil War policy of autarky little of what he proposed was built. However, a short sojourn in the United States at MIT in the mid-1940s brought him into contact with American and British theories. Much of his practice developed during the Franco regime, although he had little sympathy for its politics. Later, he designed few other complete town plans but his influence on the social aspects of Spanish planning in the '50s and '60s was considerable. His subsequent professional practice was largely devoted to urban conservation and the development of green spaces in cities and towns. His ideas are located between Anglo-Saxon planning theories and Mediterranean urbanismo, when town planning as a discipline began to emerge from its origins in engineering and architecture as part of its transition from planeamientos to proyectos.
Planning Law and Practice in Northern Ireland
Each of the jurisdictions within the United Kingdom is constantly refining the operational characteristics of its planning system and while there are some common practices, there are also substantive divergences. In each territory the planning template is shaped within a dynamic political and legal context and thus students and practitioners require an accessible, in-depth and up-to-date literature dealing with this matter. The multi-disciplinary contributors to this expanded Second Edition of Planning Law and Practice in Northern Ireland explore the progression of planning within the region and discuss prominent facets of contemporary development management, development plans, environmental law, property law and professional practice. Consideration is given to the consequences of Brexit for planning in Northern Ireland, devolved government institutional structures for planning, and the post-2015 emergent performance of local authorities in this arena. The book makes an important contribution to the wider literature in this field and, with its extensive citing of statutes and cases, provides an essential resource for students, planning practitioners and researchers.

The Soho Manufactory, Mint and Foundry, West Midlands
This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of the ground-breaking historic industrial complex created to the west of Birmingham in the eighteenth century and associated with Matthew Boulton, James Watt, and William Murdoch. The Soho Manufactory (1761-1863) and Soho Mint (1788-1850s) were both situated in the historic parish of Handsworth, now in the city of Birmingham, and the Soho Foundry (1795-1895) lay in the historic township of Smethwick, now within Sandwell Metropolitan Borough. Together they played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, achieving many world 'firsts': the first working Watt steam engine, the first steam-engine powered mint and the first purpose-built steam engine manufactory (the Soho Foundry), to name but a few. Existing literature focuses largely on the biography of the people, primarily Boulton and Watt, or the products they manufactured. The place - the Soho complex - has attracted very little attention. This volume is the first to concentrate on the buildings themselves analysing not only their physical origins, development and eventual decline but also the water and steam power systems adopted. An interdisciplinary approach has been employed combining archival research in the magnificent Soho collection at the Library of Birmingham with the results of archaeological excavations. The volume is profusely illustrated with archival material, most published for the first time, and contains a large number of reconstruction plans and drawings by the author.
The Green Building Materials Manual
Evaluating building materials for environmental sustainability is a complex prospect. How do governmental agencies and the design industry actually measure sustainable initiatives and environmental impacts? This book breaks down the technical vocabulary and principles that define environmentally sustainable choices across interior and exterior architectural products to help the reader understand: Material ingredient selectionEnergy and water useEmissions, including greenhouse gasesHuman health and toxicitySocial accountability assessment This guide explains the structure of green certifications, standards and ecolabels, life cycle assessment, environmental regulations, and more. It presents a historic timeline for context and a snapshot of current trends and future objectives. It is a comprehensive reference for interior designers, architects, building owners, contractors, and students enrolled in interior design and architecture.
Writing Architectures
Architects and fiction writers share the same ambition: to imagine new worlds into being. Every architectural proposition is a kind of fiction before it becomes a built fact; likewise, every written fiction relies on the construction of a context in which a story can take place. This collection of essays explores what happens when fiction, experimental writing and criticism are combined and applied to architectural projects and problems. It begins with ficto-criticism - an experimental and often feminist mode of writing which fuses the forms and genres of essay, critique, and story - and extends it into the domain of architecture, challenging assumptions about our contemporary social and political realities, and placing architecture in contact with such disciplines as cultural studies, literary theory and ethnography. These sixteen newly-written pieces have been selected for this volume to show how ficto-critical writing can be a powerful vehicle for creative architectural practice, providing new opportunities to explore modes of writing about architecture both within and beyond the discipline. The collection represents a broad range of geographical and cultural positions including indigenous and non-Western contexts, and includes a foreword and afterword by important thinkers in the domains of architectural criticism (Jane Rendell) and cultural studies/ethnography (Stephen Muecke).
Architectural Principles in the Age of Fraud
Philosophy exercises a massive influence on contemporary architectural culture and the understanding of the built environment. Discussions of architects and architectural academics are heavily loaded with theoretical ideas, concepts and views imported from the works of philosophers. At the same time this architectural employment of philosophy rarely goes beyond the tendency to mine philosophical works for ideas, words and phrases and use them, often without much understanding, in order to promote architectural agendas and embellish theoretical claims made by architects and academics. The book presents the history of this phenomenon for the past hundred years. It describes and analyzes numerous, often funny, entertaining as well as embarrassing, examples of false intellectual pretense and pompous but incompetent philosophical posturing by prominent architects and architectural academics of the era and their efforts to bamboozle readers, colleagues and the general public. The book presents a powerful criticism of modernist views on architecture and argues that the rise of obfuscation and philosophical posturing among architects and architectural academics is a defensive strategy intended to draw attention away from the failure of Modernism in architecture.
Transnational Buildings in Local Environments
By focusing on the skyscraping transnational building, this book bridges two key debates on the transformation and emerging problems besetting major cities - globalization and ecological and sustainable building design. While such structures tend to be constructed and/or used by transnational companies and are generally viewed as emblems of a 'global city', they nevertheless impact seriously on their local environment, posing numerous environmental burdens on it. By examining office blocks held by multinational firms in Amsterdam, S瓊o Paolo and Beijing, the book analyses how transnational buildings might be made sustainable. It compares and contrasts the different social mechanisms that are, or may be, in place and how sustainable building practices that are being activated in certain locations could be adopted elsewhere.
Environmental Valuation
Environmental quality is one of the most important issues faced by contemporary urban and regional policy. Amenities such as access to the natural environment, attractive neighbourhood characteristics and high quality public goods and services, play a direct role in determining where people choose to live and how much they are willing to do so. Likewise, negative environmental conditions, such as contamination, influence the real estate markets and the 'value' of a region. Increasingly, regions become winners or losers based on the quality of life they offer their inhabitants. Bringing together a team of leading scholars, this book addresses the issues of environmental valuation, answering questions such as: What kinds of features matter? How large of an affect do they have? How do they affect the spatial distribution of the population? And how should the value that people place on their environment affect urban and regional policy?
Butterfield's Overland Mail Co. as REPORTED in the Arkansas Newspapers of 1858-1861
The newspapers of Arkansas did an amazing job of covering the news around Butterfield's Overland Mail Company. Frequently the newspaper editors would draw their information from their exchange of newspapers across the country to bring to their subscribers the most accurate and comprehensive description of facts as possible. This book greatly expands my two previous books, "Butterfield's Overland Mail Co. Stagecoach Trail Across Arkansas 1858-1861," and "Butterfield's Overland Mail Co. use of STEAMBOATS to Deliver Mail and Passengers Across Arkansas 1858-1861."While in these two previous books, I only included brief excerpts from the Arkansas newspapers of 1857-1861, in this book I have let the newspaper reporters tell the story in their own words. It has been difficult, but I have limited my interpretive comments to a brief title I've assigned each article. In this way, today's reader can immerse themselves into the world of the citizens of Arkansas. While the purpose of my research of the Overland Mail was to satisfy my personal curiosity, hopefully this collection of my research will also make a contribution to the efforts of officially recognizing the route of Butterfield's Overland Mail Co. as a National Historic Trail.

Circular Design for Zero Emission Architecture and Building Practice
Circular Design for Zero Emission Architecture and Building Practice: It is the Green Way or the Highway presents the main concepts of circular architecture and building design, focusing on emerging trends in zero-emission buildings, particularly zero- and minus- carbon practice. The book is structured around practical design solutions, including research-based passive solutions for extreme climates. It discusses passive and low carbon cooling and heating and natural ventilation, lifecycle assessment and life-cost analysis. The book presents examples and case studies from innovative low-tech to high-tech approaches, covering a wide spectrum of climate zones to show lessons learned and proof of concept. Vulnerable groups of people such as climate refugees are discussed, alongside how vernacular architecture can help introduce practical methods into low-carbon building practices. This book presents theoretical and practical coverage of circular design for zero emission architecture and building in relation to the global challenges of climate change and extreme weather.

Barcelona Lab
Welcome to the network--and welcome to the city. For what is a city, if not an immense network of flows, relationships, and interactions? Barcelona Lab examines this weave of inertia and asks how it is implicated in the configuring of a collective space, and what physical spaces arise out of the impulses of this network. What are the physical and organic origins of these activities? It asks questions about the work space, about the small laboratories from whence worlds are constructed, worlds full of references and mechanisms for action. Who are the people who work in these places and what are the links that exists between all of these people and their work?
Imminent Commons Compendium
This compendium assembles 4 volumes that explore city commons through the works presented at the Seoul Biennale 2017. The first book shows an exploration not of distant utopias, but of the very near future, because the emerging commons is changing the way we connect, make, move, recycle, sense, and share, and the way we manage air, water, energy and the earth. The second book presents contemporary urbanism thoughts on nine imminent commons, which engage collective ecological and technological resources relevant to all cities and even extra-urban territories. The third book sets up a dialogue on the current state and near future of cities of the world through the lens of public initiatives, projects, and urban narratives. The fourth book highlights Seoul's complex urban fabric as a theatre on which the Seoul Biennale was played out. 4 books for the price of 3: Imminent Commons: The Expanded City Imminent Commons: Urban Questions for the Near Future Imminent Commons: Commoning Cities Imminent Commons: Live from Seoul
