Sri Harmandar Sahib
Sri Harmandar Sahib: Architecture - Engineering - Aesthetics (Golden Temple, Amritsar) is based on the author's doctoral research for which he was conferred his third PhD by the Panjab University in 2008. This holy shrine is the only example of Religious Architecture in the world that derives its concept and inspiration from the Sikh Faith's Holy Book, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Known all over the globe as the Golden Temple, it has been awarded the certificate of the 'most visited place of the world' by the London-based organisation, World Book of Records (WBR).Though the world's greatest architects have designed modern buildings for Religious Architecture of different faiths, the author says, only one architect in 45 centuries of recorded history mentions architectural creativity as an act of divine inspiration. He is the Spanish genius Antoni Gaudi who said, in the Sagrada Familia (The Sacred Family), everything is providential.The stated distinction was achieved by a kind of Building Design that deploys Human Scale unlike the places of worship of other faiths which invariably exalt Monumental Scale. The Golden Temple size is incredibly modest, which also underscores the cardinal principle of Humility. Furthermore, the Shrine's height is less than the height of a house permitted for Shudras, the lowest caste in Hinduism, in the Indian tradition. The holy shrine is approached by descending two-storey height from the ground level in sharp contrast to all places of worship of other religions that are approached by a flight of steps to reach their high plinth. The Golden Temple also celebrates all cardinal points as sacrosanct by virtue of being an integral part God's creation of the universe, and respects any orientation that the site offers unlike in the case of other religions that makes an inviolable prescription. The magnanimous attitude of unconditional reverence for Mother Earth that permits an entrance on each of the four sides of the Golden Temple expresses the universalness of the Sikh Faith.It is noteworthy that the Golden Temple is located in a large water body called the Amrit Sarovar [Pool of Elixir]. The Clock Tower
Author H. Allan Gandy presents a comprehensive depiction of the Army's Storehouse, a three-story sandstone fortress built in 1859. What is now renowned as a treasured event hall was once an ominous fortress perched high upon Army Point overlooking an important water passage east of San Francisco. Replete with cannon ports, lookout towers, musket loophole windows and a crenelated roof designed for howitzers, it served as a warning to would be attackers. Planning for the Common Good
Appeals to the 'common good' or 'public interest' have long been used to justify planning as an activity. While often criticised, such appeals endure in spirit if not in name as practitioners and theorists seek ways to ensure that planning operates as an ethically attuned pursuit. Yet, this leaves us with the unavoidable question as to how an ethically sensitive common good should be understood. In response, this book proposes that the common good should not be conceived as something pre-existing and 'out there' to be identified and applied or something simply produced through the correct configuration of democracy. Instead, it is contended that the common good must be perceived as something 'in here, ' which is known by engagement with the complexities of a context through employing the interpretive tools supplied to one by the moral dimensions of the life in which one is inevitably embedded. This book brings into conversation a series of thinkers not normally mobilised in planning theory, including Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre and Charles Taylor. These shine light on how the values carried by the planner are shaped through both their relationships with others and their relationship with the 'tradition of planning' - a tradition it is argued that extends as a form of reflective deliberation across time and space. It is contended that the mutually constitutive relationship that gives planning its raison d'礙tre and the common good its meaning are conceived through a narrative understanding extending through time that contours the moral subject of planning as it simultaneously profiles the ethical orientation of the discipline. This book provides a new perspective on how we can come to better understand what planning entails and how this dialectically relates to the concept of the common good. In both its aim and approach, this book provides an original contribution to planning theory that reconceives why it is we do what we do, and how we envisage what should be done differently. Cincinnati's Lost Architects
Joseph and Bernard Steinkamp carried on the family tradition of their grandfather and father, designing at least 300 structures in and around the Cincinnati area and as far away as Charleston, West Virginia. Some of the more well-known structures in the Cincinnati area include the Mercantile Library Building where they had their offices for 40 years, the Hotel Metropole, now the 21c Museum Hotel, and the American Building, which now houses high-end condominiums.In this book, you'll also learn: - Some of their most beautiful work was for the early Xavier College buildings in Avondale that included seven administration and school buildings in addition to the field house and the football stadium.- Over the span of their careers, they designed several Catholic schools and churches, including St. William Church in Price Hill, St. Mark's Church in Evanston, and Our Lady of Mercy Church in Dayton. Their work included the beautiful chapel at St. Ursula Academy in Walnut Hills.- Starting at the end of the 19th century, they partnered with Thomas Emery's Sons by designing many large "streetcar" apartments in Walnut Hills, Avondale, Cli on and elsewhere that allowed the populace of Cincinnati to move up the steep hills and away from the dirt and smells of downtown.- The brothers helped Barney Kroger expand by designing bakeries and several grocery stores for him when the company was growing at the turn of the century.- They also designed a number of commercial businesses, factories and garages around Cincinnati. Some are still standing and have been converted to apartments, condominiums, or restaurants.

Density Options for Housing Affordability
In the summer of 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, twenty five students hailing from all parts of the globe participated, some remotely, some in person, in a unique learning experience. Their assignment: solve the housing affordability problem in one of the world's most expensive cities - Vancouver BC. Vancouver has among the world's most expensive housing and the lowest average wages of any major North American metropolitan area. This outrageous gap is putting immense financial pressure on city wage earners and impeding the city's economic vitality. And adding thousand of market housing units in the city has not lowered prices. In fact, during the 40 years when tens of thousands of new housing units were added to the city, housing prices increased by 300 percent (in the inflation adjusted terms). Both homeowners and renters are affected by this inflationary spiral, as when home prices rise so too do rents. In this studio students were asked to explore a new and promising approach: using zoning tools as a means for affordability. The concept was simple. Instead of upzoning in the hopes of new housing supply producing a drop in prices, a strategy that seemed only to raise land prices, what if land was only up zoned in return for affordability. This would potentially keep land prices stable while allowing affordable housing projects to "pencil out" without government subsidy. This model has been adopted in Cambridge Mass (https: //www.jchs.harvard.edu/blog/what-can-we-expect-cambridges-new-affordable-housing-overlay) and Berkeley California ( https: //beyondchron.org/berkeleys-next-big-step-a-100-affordable-housing-overlay/) and shows great promise. For the study area, we chose various test sites along the West Broadway Corridor. This corridor is now being replanned in response to the ongoing construction of the Broadway extension of the Millenium Line Skytrain line. It is anticipated that much new development will be approved along this new line - to capitalize on this massive infrastructure expenditure. But anxiety still exists: how can we be sure that wage earners, those most in need of housing close to new jobs and sustainable transit, will be able to afford housing?
